SBHS Class Of 2020

The Official Yearbook of Sydney High Class Of 2020

Acknowledgements

Thank you to the Class of 2020 for
being awesome.

Congratulations on finishing 6 years of
High School and good luck on all your

future endeavours!
Thank you to our parents and
teachers who supported us every step on
this journey. We would not be where we

are without you!

2020. Bushfires. The scramble for masks. COVID. The Hong
Kong protests. Unseen demand for toilet paper. The further
polarisation of the US by George Floyd’s killing. The recession. A
loaded A-320 slamming into Pakistan. The Beirut explosion. Half
yearlies being pushed back. The thought that HSC was going
to be cancelled. Forced absence from school. Hallways being
marked by arrows. HSC being sat in the gym. The election.
As the class of 2020, we will not forget this eventful year.
The Yearbook committee would like to give a bit of context into
the origins and purpose of the creation of this yearbook and its
purpose that it serves. As we know, it has been a tough year,
probably one of the toughest we will ever experience. But we
pushed through together as a group, whether it was cheering
on our rowing teams at the Head of the River from our comput-
ers at school or the pooling of our resources post-trials and the
cooperation of all students to squeeze every bit of effort out for
the exams. We have accomplished the impossible.
The premise of this yearbook is really a tangible product that
compliments the true value of your experience at High, the
memories, the friends, the moments of despair. We asked the
students to provide us with an individualised quote and a re-
sponse to the question “What was your favourite experience at
High?”, along with up to 3 photos which represent themselves.
We not only develop on our final year at High but the journey we
took to make it this far. 6 years is a long time, and it’s our contin-
ued commitment to the exams, the sports and the co-curricular
activities that set us apart from other schools.
Throughout the 6 years at High you’ve learnt to cope in a high
intensity, academically rigorous and physically challenging envi-
ronment. You’ve realised its different to primary school and that
you may not be the smartest person at the table anymore. Or
realised that the world isn’t a wish-granting factory. But this has
developed you as a person to be more strong, resilient, cooper-
ative, or hardworking. However, no doubt High has changed us
for the better, and pushed us towards the bright young men we
leave the school as.
At the end of the day, although it feels like a substantial part of
your life, your time at high, remember it is only the end of the
beginning. We believe each and every one of you will work to-
wards achieving your greatest potential, whatever that might be.
Go into the next stage of your life with confidence that you have
experienced all the world has to throw at you already.
Finally, we would like to thank you all for being amazing peers
and that we wouldn’t have it any other way. We hope that we all
will stay in contact long after school has finished in any shape or
form whether it be at the shopping mall, or in the same lecture
hall at university or as co-workers.
Thank you,
Yearbook Committee

School Song

Come, rally round, boys young and old
To swell the happy throng.

And sing the song of Sydney High
In measures loud and long.

Though many are our tasks severe,
With efforts none the less sincere,
We’ll overcome them year by year

With courage, bold and strong.
Then sound once more the strain,

And let the cloisters ring again
With echoes of our School’s fair name,

The name of Sydney High.
(Year 12 only, more stately and slowly)

Ring out the name of Sydney High,
In peals of joyful praise.
The glories of our heritage
Must never fade away.

With “Truth and Courage” as our guide,
And minds prepared whate’er betide,
When we are scattered far and wide,
Our tribute still we’ll pay.
Then sound once more the strain,
And let the cloisters ring again
With echoes of our School’s fair name,
The name of Sydney High.

Timeline

2015 - YEAR 7

Edward Yoon pegging apple

Edward Yoon pegging an apple so hard at Terry Zhai that he popped a testicle,
for which he continually claimed did not affect his ability to reproduce, not that
it mattered anyways

Youtube Channels

Youtube channels from our school captain, Alex Zhou, and the dux of our year,
Alan Wong, certainly had a zing to it

2016 - YEAR 8

Just not Kent’s year

From his mushroom haircut and ‘best friend adventures’ with Haley, to follow-
ing Haley to the orthodontist, to Khalil Youseff thinking he’s cupid reincarnated
by driving a wedge between Kent and Haley which they never recovered from.
However, this did lead us to the glorious moment of ‘Haley I’m sorry’, where
Haley was not responding to Kent as a result of Khalil, so the logical step for
Kent was to shoot a three and shout Haley I’m sorry at a camera.
What a romantic moment!

Team Immigrants vs Team Eshays

Another thrilling experience was the rap battle between Mitch and Noah and
Ozan and Kennan with the undercard of Khalil v Ikko.
Despite Ikko Ehode Arimoto’s African descent, his two thousand word essay
masqueraded as a rap acquired a total of 0 audience votes as he lost to Khalil,
for which he has not only left the school but migrated to another continent.
There was also a surprise visit from Xannon Shirley and his surprise visit turned
out to be a lot better than his surprise visit to his girlfriend’s house.

6

2017 - YEAR 9

English Exam Leaked

On one fateful day a week before the yearlies, Joanne Curry decides to leave
her class to study and lets one Edmond Wong use her computer. Before soon,
Edmond’s curiosity brought him to search for the English yearlies and the class
gathers around the computer.
As the english department discovered the security breach, Edmond copped a 2
day suspension for the actual leaking, Shuman copped a 2 day suspension for
guarding the door and Mitch and Alexander Lai both copped 1 day suspension
for no real reason

NAPLAN Resit

Dux of the grade, Lachlan Ho, and self proclaimed dux Flamon Zhang alongside
30 people were to resit the Naplan, reinforcing how bad SB English is.

2018 - YEAR 10

Shuyuan’s 2020 Formal

On a 14 hour drive up to the Gold Coast, Shuman inadvertently started a re-
demption arc rivalled only by Zuko’s, where he posted his first meme on how
Shuyuan’s organised formal was superior to Eric’s. Some of the memes includ-
ed;
• Ben Gurtala’s pedopheliac tendencies
• Matthius preparing to ask Haley during her relationship with Eric to formal
• Vincent’s unfortunate experience with Melanie La and Daniel Wu

Luna Park Incident

Upon seeing the beauty of the Sydney Harbour, Matthius decided to test the
waterproof ability of his phone by dunking it in the sea, which was the highlight
of the day.

7

2019 - YEAR 11

Nash Llgas

During his quest for true love, Edmond Wong had thought he found the right
girl, which turned out to be a “businessman” in India, threatening Edmond to
pay 30 000 Rupees for his own pictures.

Plus Three to Plus Zero

Oscar also decides to pursue his quest for true loves, scoring three women to
bring to Social. However, there is no happily ever after, as all three coincidental-
ly had “things on that night”, resulting in Oscar having zero plus ones.

Prefect Shenanigans

• Oliver unfortunately came 30th in the running for prefects, and missed out,
however redeeming himself by becoming SRC.

• A certain someone asked everyone to vote for him, following his inability to
gain prefect, he claimed that it was more rigged than the 2016 elections

• Aidin’s path to captainancy falls short, which would fall even shorter as he
went from prefect to vetoed, reasons for which he claimed were “bull”

2020 - YEAR 12

COVID

Before COVID, 2020 was looking like the best year to graduate. It turns out to
be a meme because it changed the entire year.

Swimming carnival

Aidin’s situation goes from bad to worse following his strip tease and an
alleged “Central Toilets” incident written on his back. He becomes fully vetoed.

Nightwatch

Upon hearing that the school was hiring security guards (not really), Suvi de-
cides to take a night shift in the bearpit and got temporarily vetoed, his accom-
plice received the worse punishment, having had her ears scarred from Felix’s
8 mixtape years prior.

Post-Trials Fun

1. Prefect Exchange
2020 Prefects were beaten “unfairly” by 2021 prefects
2. Rugby vs Cricket
The curry vs durry finally went official, with refs and appeared in the High Notes
as 1st grade rugby vs 1st grade cricket, which was not that far from the truth.
The curries fought extremely hard but unfortunately lost 8-9, multiple dbs were
taken in the middle to prevent lung collapses of durries
3. RIP Aaron, Lawrence, Kaesh
Aaron thought to ‘go big or go home’ and challenged Adin to a rap battle, with
which he lost from the beginning. Rhyming ‘it’ with ‘it’, he saw his life flash be-
fore his eyes as Adin went full out and obliterated his career.
Lawrence lost the second rap battle despite claiming that rapping ran in his
blood. He had to rely on Kwabena to initiate the N-word and even then An-
tonio was able to pick out all the memes of Lawrence and put him back in his
grave.
Kaesh unfortunately lost to Noah, who claims his 3rd win and remains
undefeated.
4. Gender Swap
Overall a memorable day, but the highlight has to be Cipolla and Knox staring
at everyone with absolute disgust as they are probably conservative and trans-
phobic
5. Junior Day
Terry was put inside a luggage bag and wheeled around the school, shocking
teachers that there was a year 12 small enough to fit
6. Water Fight
When Robert Dowdell confronted the water fight, never has the phrase fight
or flight been more apparent as half the grade decided to run away whilst the
other half followed the principle of “we can’t all get suspended”
7. Muck-up Day
Cut short as Robert Dowdell became Rowdy and banned the best of us from
coming to grad.

Tournament is an expe-
rience I’ll never forget.
I’ll also never forget the
chaos that is Latin classes

ADAM GORDON

There have been many moments at High
which I have enjoyed. One of them was
the time when I scored the game win-
ning shot in basketball against Joeys.
Another was scoring a goal in the last
minute to tie the game with Grammar
in soccer one time. But none of these
experiences match the support we give
our boys at the GPS swimming finals or
the final Rugby game. The atmosphere
of the crowd is incredible and I will never

forget the High Spirit of our school.

My favourite experience would definitely be skitzing out at all the school
camps. It’s been my damn honour growing up with you boys, wouldn’t

change it for the world

Adithya Srivatsan

Over the course of my time at High, I have had a number of great experiences. In singling
out one, I think my favourite would be taking part in the GPS sporting activities that the
school offers. Specifically, with cricket - travelling to Brisbane with the boys for the Five
Highs tournament was a rewarding experience and something I won’t forget when my time
at High comes to a close.

By far my favourite moment at High would’ve been the USA basketball tour with all of my
mates and playing against other high school teams. Not to mention all of the memes and
memories that happened. Even though there were embarrassing moments, it was still an
unforgettable moment to spend with my mates in another country!

Alan Jessup

The five summer seasons I rowed for High definitely stand out as the best moments I’ve experienced
through school. This last season, the camraderie between the boys, as we supported each other

through everything that such a painful sport brings, was so special that I’m sure it is what will keep
us coming back together for a laugh and a good time for many, many years to come.

Alan Ji

I’ll never forget the last 500m at HOTR finishing the race fuelled solely by the roars of the High 31
crowd despite being 20 seconds from 7th place. Or the cheers at GPS swimming as we shook
heads at grammar’s “twinkle twinkle little star” chant. Ill never forget the chant rally when we were
first inducted as prefects or the chant rally when we welcomed the new prefects and accepted
our time was over. Attending High has been a privilege and i’m proud to call this school a second
home.

Mate, nothing will ever beat lunch time
touch. Even though I injured my knee a
couple times as I’m sure all you bastards
heard, it was what I woke up for in the
mornings. Late hits (some concussion
worthy), guest appearances by Latrell,

Bruddah Johnston and Robbie, shit
tries scored by Jacko, a regular dummy
spit by the man who shan’t be named

(Beastchel), everyone complaining
about kicking on 1st and then doing it
themselves, and just a shit ton of good

memories.

Aleksei Maksymow

Being with friends that
changed me, supported
and gave me unforgettable
memories has definitely been
the best experience at High.

Alex ZhOU To quote Winnie the Pooh, ‘we didn’t realise we
were making memories, we just knew we were
having fun’. Full credit to all the boys. It’s been
an absolute honour spending these 6 years with
you all. In the moment, stuff happens that makes
you go what the F*** but when u look back on
it you’re just like oi I’m so happy that happened.

Things like when Ms Howland lost her SH*T
and grabbed her handbag and stormed out of
the classroom after some mysterious vandal(s)
glued-sticked a rat + cheese + 3kesh on the
board. Or that time she got into a 45 minute
argument with Zhong after he said ‘I want to be
a house-husband’ cus apparently it had ‘con-
notations’ lmao. When Dowdy and Stein came
STORMIN over to Bat and Ball, cutting the water
fight short, whilst half the grade fully legged it
and the other half stood there and just copped
it. And who could forget the brownie epidemic
amidst year 10 illuminate where 30 lads roamed
the school completely off their chops. I frickin
love this school man. It’s been amazing- without

you all I wouldn’t be the guy I am today.

High has provided me with a home and
a second family for 6 years. There were
many memorable and amazing experi-
ences I’ve had ever since I first stepped
foot into the school in 2015 with end-
less opportunities presented to me. By
far the best experiences of High for me
were the team sports and the memories
made with friends whether it be on the
court or at lunch times and the lasting

bonds created. It’s something I will
treasure and miss leaving High.

My favourite experience at High was rowing back into the sheds at sunset
after our final training session, and realising that this was it.

Our win against Adelaide High School at the 2018 Five Highs Cricket Carnival: Having
won the previous 4 Competitions, they were very cocky. We bowled first and ripped
into them, sledging them to infuriate them and they retaliated with words of their
own. It was a feisty game full of sledging, passion and abuse. In the end, we chased
down their total of 108 with 1 wicket remaining, with our captain Arvin scoring 70
not out and Jackson hitting the winning runs with his famous late cut. Winning
against those arrogant dogs was so satisfying and one of my favourite experiences
at High.

Anthony efthymiou

Every moment of just being part of the culture at high and being sur-
rounded by the boys, it meant everything.

Too many to count. Probably when we won year 7 Oztag. Apart from that, the
inauguration of the currylads was a very special moment. Ensure to subscribe
to the currylads channel which will be posting its first video on the 1st of De-
cember 2020.

Aryan verma

Too many to count. I didn’t
even realise I was making mem-

ories, I was just having fun.
However, there is one thing that
is clear. Regardless of if the fu-
ture brings us further or closer, I
will never forget my experiences

and the people I have met at
high. Looking back, sometimes

you will never know the true
value of a moment until it be-

comes a memory.

‘Initiation”. After coming off the
water at my first rowing camp it was
announced. All the senior-A rowers
congregated in the showers and ex-
plained to me what it was. Two at a
time the rowers were to go into the
stall and compare their... the small-
est between the two would walk out
and the victor would stay. One-by-

one they were eliminated leaving
me the last to walk in. Afterwards,
it was revealed to me that it was a
massive hoax and that I, in fact, was
the only one that had played. In that
moment of slight embarrassment
amongst the fits of laughter, instead

High was an unique experience
which will never be replicat-
ed elsewhere. Here’s to those

torturous 1.6k runs, waking up
early for Saturday GPS games,
being a rascal in those silent

those precious memories we
have built over these wonderful

years.

My favourite thing about High is the grit and perserverance of the people, wheth-
er it be for sport or studies. I remember feeling sick and almost passing out
during a 1.6 run, but watching everyone press on through it motivated me to
push on and finish it. Thanks to all the friends and people who persevered with
me. Let’s get this HSC bread!

Meeting all the boys and fitting into different groups during highschool was truly a 39
great pleasure for my six years at High. I wouldn’t have wanted my time to be spent
any differently, and consequently, I appreciate all the memories I take with me. All
the best for all the boys that have shared a portion of their lives with me.

DANIEL VERGOV The best thing about High
was meeting so many great
people, and all of us taking
part in the culture. Going to
events like Head of the River
and GPS Swimming to cheer
was always mental, and even
little shit like skitzing on the
train back from swimming at
11pm was memorable every
year. It was a blessing grow-
ing up with y’all and I wish
everyone luck for the future

after High.

My favourite experience at High has to be the graduation on our very
last day. That day, amidst the plethora of emotions, reinforced to me the
strong bond that had developed between every student and teacher, and
the memories created that will stay with me for a lifetime.

EDMOND WONG

Year 12 was the peak... the damn climax. Most amount of fun you can
possibly have in a year. That last week of school honestly was the best
week ever in my life. Thanks for all the memories boys.

EDWARD YOON

Playing rugby in front of all the boys in 2019 at High Vs Grammar. All the

The best experience at High has to be playing in the basketball team.
Basketball let me make friends with so many people not just within our
year, but other years too, and was a core part of my life at High.

EDWIN ZHENG

ERIC CAO

Things that really shaped my experience here at High include sitting outside 801 with the
boys, early morning basketball training, late night study sessions where I’m stressing my
head off, frantically tucking my shirt in when someone screams “Dowdell’s here”, indulging
in a lovely HSP at Golden Pide and DB #iykyk. All in all, High was not too bad haha. Thank
you for listening to my Ted talk. 43

JYP Entertainment’s DAY6 sub-unit Even of
Day has just dropped their ‘Where the sea

sleeps’ music video.
This comes after much anticipation was
built up over the past few weeks, following
the announcement that DAY6 members
Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon are to form
a sub-unit as bassist, keyboardist, and

drummer of the band respectively.
The songs from the album were reportedly

co-composed by the Even of Day mem-
bers. According to Soompi, ‘Where the sea
sleeps’ was composed by Young K, Wonpil,

and Hong Ji Sang, with lyrics written by
Young K.

ERIC TU

ERIC ZHU

I took a shit once. And in taking this shit, I
experienced a pivotal moment of my life,
much like that of Archimedes and his dis-
covery of buoyancy. As the first entity of shit
left my asshole, it followed an almost perfect,
linear trajectory towards the centre of the
water in the toilet bowl, held perfectly flat
with it’s surface tension. Yet this ‘first’ action
made by the piece of shit, hitting the surface,
was enough to liberate an amount of water,
with sufficient kinetic energy to touch, and
effectively wet my initially dry, bare ass. As
such, the possibility of a clean, dry shit was
no longer possible, and the 3-ply toilet paper
used to wipe no longer held the possibility
of staying dry. And this prospect of an initial
ETHAN KWAN action of power, ultimately deciding the fate
44 of an individual, as well as the fate of that
known as ‘society’, was made clear.

ETKIN TETIK I’ll be honest, the entirety of my
FELIX CAO 6 years at High was a memora-
ble experience. From the music
camps where Anish slammed the
door into Jarrod’s head, to the
SOR morning classes where bare-
ly anyone rocked up - everything
was an unforgettable experience.
But I think my fondest memory
has to be getting locked in at
school after we stayed back for
robotics, honestly at that point I
was ready to spend the night in
one of the corridors. Thank you

for the 6 years High.

My favourite experience at High was
probably just literally every day being

around mates and just having fun.
Maths was the most fun. Because
Mr. Parker was so chill, we would be
teaching him like double entendres,
adult cinematography and all this
crazy stuff. But of course we were still
learning the beauty of mathematics.
English was also pretty good cause
in 2020, Kesh was teaching me how
to become and eshay, like a real
one. I was learning slang like ‘ehsay’,
‘eetswa’, ‘Doonside,’, ‘Inner West’,
‘oybey’ and ‘Big Shaq’. It was just a
damn fine school where every day was
an exciting surprise. Notable men-
tions: Head of the River, GPS Athletics,
Roden Cutler charity and 2020 Rap

Battle. Thank you High.

My favourite experiences
were getting put in the re-
cycling bin and high yoga!

The most memorable experience was the Canberra history excursion as it
was the first time I had ever been to Canberra. It was also the only over-

Debating was my favourite part of High, as it was the only place where you could verbally
abuse private school kids and get away with it. Until Year 10, I was the only non-white per-
son on my team when a coach did the unthinkable and made a predominantly curry debat-
ing team. Soon, debating took over the vibe I associated with Fridays as I awaited the banter,

extravagant suppers and nostalgic car rides home.

Gordon Huang

Thank you High for teaching me humility, independence, persistence and courage in
the face of hardship. Everyone here has unique interests and skills sets, difficulties to
overcome, values to live up to and aspirations to pursue. To the class of 2020 — I deeply
admire each and every one of you for your immense efforts, and I wish you all the best

in your future endeavours.

Harris Memon

My favourite experience at High had to be in 2018 when I was part of the 2nd XI cricket team. 47
We had just won our first GPS match in over 5 years defeating Scots for the first time since 1981.
Words could not describe the feeling that each of us felt as we reaped the benefits of our hard
work and persistence. The incredible support of the Sydney High community inspired us to play
at our best and I am beyond grateful for their motivation. The immense joy and feeling of eupho-
ria on this day is something that I will continue to cherish as I continue to reflect on the amazing

moments that Sydney High has provided me with.

Indirectly leaking the
english exam, walking
21 kilometres to school,
going 7-0 for 15’s basket-
ball, duxing math that one
year. It’s been a great time
spending time with you all.

I enjoyed my stay.

My favourite experience
at High was representing
the school in the da Vinci
Decathlon competition. It
was a fun day where we
had the chance to chal-
lenge ourselves coopera-

disciplines. The team atmo-
sphere was amazing and we
were able to motivate each

The boys have to come first right? They
have to be. All the people that have
helped me on this 6 year journey, The

class of Fairland, the year 8 class that I
always look back to, The class of Ms Cur-
ry and the leaked exam, I will remember

those days. Athletics comes at a close
second. Just representing the school in
front of thousands of spectators gives an
adrenaline rush that I will never miss. I’ll
miss the after school training sessions,
the boys who went through the tough-
est event in athletics (which is hurdles of
course) and seeing the old boy coaches
come back. The Boys plus athletics is a
match made in heaven and I thank you

all for the journey.

Penis Parker disqualifying me, zhong and bidhu from the AMC for alleged cheating
during the exam was quite the highlight. The idiotic and possibly homosexual educa-
tionalist wouldn’t believe that we coincidentally had identical answers, which would’ve
awarded us a High Distinction (bidhu did the first half, I did the second and zhong did
fuck all and copied us). However, what truly outraged the three of us, was that a certain
black man by the name of Vikas Bolisetty, who also copied us (but copied it down in-
correctly), managed to come out of it unscathed due to his stupidity. What are the odds

of that, the black man getting away with his crimes, as per fucking usual.

Humzah Mohamed

My favourite experience at High was Ms Manolios’s reaction of complete
shock and utter confusion when I got a High Distinction in the ANCQ in

Year 11.

Ivan Liang

Some people say that the past six years have flown by but I beg to differ. It’s
true some memories felt like they were only yesterday but as I try to recall on
each enjoyable moment, the list seems to only go on forever. These six years

50 were jam-packed with memories of the boys having the greatest time of our

lives making my days at High thrilling and truly unforgettable.
