Research Department Annual Report 2015

ii Foreword

It is with great pleasure that we present the 2015 Annual Report of the Research
Department. As the premiere tertiary care eye hospital in the kingdom, the King
Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital continues to strive for excellence in the combined
missions of research, education, and clinical care. This report illustrates the
substantial progress made in the past year, evident through the quality, quantity,
and impact of the publications and presentations produced by the medical staff and
trainees. The research performed at KKESH and with collaborators around the
world continues to improve the prestige and already illustrious reputation of the
hospital in the region and the world.

Always a traditional strength, clinical research continues to be a pillar of excellence
in the department. KKESH was selected to be a key site for a multi-center uveitis
trial sponsored by the United States National Eye Institute/National Institute
of Health; this is the first time a hospital in Saudi Arabia has been awarded this
prestigious opportunity, and patients have already begun enrolling in this important
study. The hospital has also been selected to perform several clinical studies funded
by pharmaceutical and device manufacturing companies, including a promising
glaucoma implant and a simple tool for diabetic retinopathy screening. KKESH
will soon accept the first class of candidates for a new certified Clinical Research
Coordinator training program; the leaders of tomorrow are learning the methods of
research at KKESH today.

The basic and translational scientists continue to build the infrastructure to perform
independent and important research at KKESH; by leveraging local talent and
international collaborations, the laboratory is now performing such techniques
as DNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture. The research team
continues to pursue cutting-edge research that focuses on diseases that are important
to the people of Saudi Arabia, including keratoconus, diabetes, ocular tumors, genetic
and inherited disorders, and glaucoma. Investigators from KKESH have worked
alongside the faculty of Johns Hopkins University to develop several important
discoveries, including new technology in nanomedicine. Additional laboratory space
in the new Al Rajhi Diabetic Eye Centre will allow additional staff and technology
to be added to the growing department.

The progress of 2015 will lay the foundation for much success in the years to
come; continued improvements in the ability of the faculty and trainees to perform
outstanding clinical research, advancements in translational science capabilities, and
an ongoing commitment to excellence will ensure that KKESH will lead the region
into the future.
