Editor's Note
Incredible Stories of Indian Manufacturing
In the last twenty years of my journey in the manufacturing
sector, I have seen Indian manufacturing sector embrace
many new trends and changes. While some changes
originated evolutionarily within the sector, some were
brought in by the external factors such global standards,
markets, governments etc. While some were in the form
of policies (abolishment of licensing) and operations
(Foreign Direct Investment), other came through disruptive
technologies and innovations.
Today it feels great to witness that Indian manufacturing,
right through all these changes, has come to a point
where it is on a high growth trajectory. Much as this
growth will be made possible by empowering existing
manufacturing industries as well as welcoming new ones,
rise in domestic consumption and exports of Made in India
products, it will also come largely by the advent of a slew
of new disruptive technological developments in the world
of manufacturing such as Automation, Robotics, Additive
Manufacturing, Machine Learning, Data Mining etc.
Indian manufacturing is undoubtedly the cynosure
of the world currently. As targeted by the National
Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), it is set
to contribute 25 per cent to the GDP by 2025 compared
to the current share of nearly 16 per cent and has the
potential to touch US$ 1 trillion by 2025. What makes
India unique is a combination of vast market size and
manufacturing potential. Still, almost 50 per cent of India’s
manufacturing needs are met by imports. As per reports,
Cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India’s
manufacturing sector reached US$ 72.31 billion during
April 2000-September 2017.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS
Government Should Prioritize the
Growth of Manufacturing Sector
Trade and industry associations work closely with industries and government.
‘Industry Insights’ brings out insights from the industry experts and leaders into
challenges, opportunities, and strategies for industries within the manufacturing
sector. In this edition of ‘Machine Maker’, Mr. Sudhakar Shetty, President of the
FKCCI, presents his incisive views on the growth of manufacturing in India and Mousmi Naidu
discusses the contribution made by FKCCI towards this. [email protected]

this level today. He started as a table busser in
a restaurant in 1971 and he had a strong desire
to learn which led him to joining a night school.
Thereafter, Mr. Sudhakar Shetty started and
continued his journey with hard work, sincerity
and integrity that gave him the courage to achieve
all that he had planned. Traversing through
major industries like hospitality, journalism and
now manufacturing; making it big in every field,

PRESIDENT INSIGHTS
How FKCCI is helping the industrialists
FKCCI represents taxpayers; it is like the apex body of all 1
industrial obligations and trade. It is the bridge between the
government and businessman. They provide guidance to
businesses that helps the manufacturing and industrial sector
grow, eliminating economic impediments.
2 Government steps for the manufacturing sector
Manufacturing sector is the backbone of the economy;
hence the government should prioritize the growth of the
manufacturing sector. Firstly, the government should provide
proper banking support giving subsidies in interest rates to
businesses. Secondly, they should provide infrastructure
with reference to logistics, roads and services. Thirdly the
government should reduce some of the importing sectors
that will enhance manufacturing produce in India.
Views about the current manufacturing sector
There has been a recent growth in the manufacturing 3
sector since 2017, however the manufacturing sector
had suffered some losses due to demonetization and the
shadow of this process still prevails today affecting the
small scale industries to a great extent.
Action plan for FKCCI for 2018-19
4 FKCCI plan to organize a national association meet at Bangalore
that will encourage B2B meeting from all over India. The FKCCI also
plans to host an Asian Chambers of Commerce meet in Bangalore
to find opportunities for growth and ways to make Karnataka
as a brand for industries on the globe. They have initiated a
programme for the youth known as 'Youth India Forum' to increase
job opportunities and also raise 1000 new entrepreneurs in near
future. Additionally, they also have created a Woman Wing to
motivate women participation in the manufacturing sector helping
them grow and achieve their dreams.
Global impact of FKCCI
The FKCCI has signed 56 MOUs with different countries. 5
They have represented 38 Boards and Committees by
the state and central government. They are committed
to taking the industrial growth of Karnataka to the next
level by global engagements.

Additive Manufacturing progressed far in its emergence from

Lubrication plays an inevitable role in hot forging
process to maintain quality and productivity.
Hot forging process is performed at extreme
high temperature (up to 1250-degree C for steel,
360-degree C to 520-degree C for Al-alloys,
700-degree C to 800-degree C for Cu-alloys).
These temperatures are necessary in order
to avoid strain hardening of the metal during
