Club President’s Welcome
Happy New Season!
How exciting that at long last we can look forward to actual, real life RUGBY.
I haven’t got over the curtailment of the season before last (can it really be that long ago?) when whatever algorithm the RFU used, decided that we would finish the season in 5th place. No way, I thought at the time and I still feel aggrieved about it.
Anyway good luck to Harrogate and Blaydon, we’ll be pleased to welcome them back into the Northern Premier League if the case arises.
To this coming season, of course, we do welcome back Preston Grasshoppers and Burnage who in various seasons have played in our league and we give our usual Billingham welcome to Northwich, Otley and York.
JOHN KER
CLUB PRESIDENT
Although we have played York in previous years, I don’t remember it being at our current level. Correct me if I’m wrong but I won’t be buying you a pint.
Financially the club, as most others in rugby and many other sports, have been through a couple of lean years but thanks to the diligent workings of our fiscal wizards and the other committees we have survived to face another season. The massive crowd for our recent friendly, warm-up game against Tynedale is evidence of Billingham Rugby Club’s thirst for games to watch. I don’t use that word lightly as we need that thirst to be taken into the bar, before, during (well, halftime) and especially after all matches as we need to hear the tills ringing as we recoup our losses. Do tills actually still ring these days or is that only in a certain shop on TV? Anyway, you know what I mean.
Welcome back to rugby one and all and let’s see if Billingham can go unbeaten before Christmas. We’ve done it before so let’s give it our best for repeat performances although I do appreciate that the other clubs will be doing their level best to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Message from the Chairman
Well it has been a long time coming but this season, our 98th season, the season following the longest ever pre-season, is the season we are incredibly excited about and justifiably so.
As I write this update, we are still in the grip of the dreaded Cxxxd, I am even sick of saying it. It has clearly caused untold damage over the last 18 months. The fact we lost a season pales into insignificance compared to the hardship that some people have had to endure. Within our community, within our club, some of us have suffered personal loss as the virus has taken loved ones away from us, some have had to suffer personal hardship, financial, emotional and in some cases serious illness.
One thing however, that hasn’t really surprised me, but never fails to impress me, is the real sense of community and family that our members and supporters have shown. When any member of our club, our family has been in need, we have been there for them, individually, collectively and as one.
MARK ARMSTRONG
CLUB CHAIRMAN
Whether it was the food bank drop, the emotional and wellbeing support for individuals, or whether it has just been there to listen, the sense of belonging has never been stronger.
There was time when games (of a sort) were played and there was a few brief socially distanced outdoor dinners and celebrations and one in particular will last in the memory for years to come. Out of this however, I believe we have developed a new end of season dinner format...or maybe not!
However, it hasn’t stopped us from progressing and as I am often heard to say, “if you stand still, you go backwards!”. Well we have not been standing still for 18 months and we have definitely not been going backwards.
Some players might have edged closer to retirement and some may have moved on, but at the same time we have had a new group of young players join the senior section from the Colts, we have had new players join, we have had some players return and by the form we have shown pre-season, we have definitely not gone backwards.
So whilst not much rugby has been played we have hosted England U20s training camps on a couple of occasions and we have seen our first ex-player become a full England cap and just this week our first ex-player go on to win an Olympic Gold medal. We are proud of what Adam Radwan has achieved with England over the summer and his debut hat trick and we are overwhelmed with the embodiment of our motto that
4

Jack Smith has demonstrated. To move on from his injury and to go on to win an Olympic Gold in Wheelchair Rugby, his Spirit truly is his Strength.
On other fronts we have also been busy. Commercially we had no idea what the last 18 months would bring but we have come out if it stronger. Thanks to some individuals who have ensured we manage the club in the leanest and most appropriate way possible and have ensured we have been in receipt of any and all grants available to us.
To the army of fund raisers who have raised funds, either through dubious video drinking games, Thunderballs or 6 Nations predictions. Thank you. To our sponsors, thank you. And the biggest thank you of all to our members who have stood by the club during this time and have continued paying their membership. We are a stronger club today because of all of you.
And because we don’t stand still, we have submitted and have had approved plans for our extension. This is what I mean by not standing still. We have plans approved for an extension at the front of the club for a downstairs, outdoor refreshment area, yes a bar! We have plan in place to implement this over the coming months as well as refurbish all of our toilets upstairs.
We also have plans approved to extend the upstairs main room to double our capacity in the first phase with an option to extend further in the future. We have plans approved to develop a new,
additional state-of-the-art changing room and treatment room. We will be fitting out a new kitchen in the site of the current snug and a new snug will be built in the area the kitchen is today but extended, with it’s own private balcony overlooking the posts and my favourite part of all, we will be extending the balcony further along the side of the club and further out by over 3m. I can hear the roar and feel the ground shake already. So whilst we are financially in a good place we still need to raise funds if we want to achieve all of this in the next 12-18 months.
So our 97th season did not happen, and like 1939-1940 will be a blank season on our Club Captains board. We have used the time wisely and our 98th season is going to be one to embrace, one to be excited about and one where rugby will be back and back stronger!
We have the development plans highlighted above, we have new additional sponsors supporting us and we have our eyes on promotion. We have set out our ambition in time for our centenary year, to be the best, professional, amateur rugby club in the country. It may be a lofty, some might even say arrogant goal, but remember, if you stand still you go backwards and this club has spirit and from that spirit we gain our strength and from that strength we progress.
OSIOS!
Mark, your very proud Chairman.

Senior Coach Update
A well earned and needed
rest week has been and gone.
Time to re-focus and attack the last stretch before the Christmas break. We start off with two home games on the spin with York first up.
A little bit of an unknown but results, research and footage shows them to be a very, very impressive squad. Solid up front with a great set piece and a strong backline with their 10 marshalling the troops. It’s shaping up to be a great game, one we will need to be firing for.
As with all teams we have a few boys away with work and England games. For the first time in a long time I’ve had to have some difficult conversations with some very good players who are looking to win back their shirts in the Lions squad. We look strong and have trained well. The plan is to run and keep on running.
PETER EVANS
SENIOR COACH
The Lions head to Middlesbrough in search of much needed game time.

I’ve spoken about the recent challenges with local 2nd teams postponing games and it’s really starting to impact us now. Thankfully we have a stretch of games now until Christmas which will allow boys to put pressure on. As I’ve said above we have some very, very good players in the squad and I am hoping for a big performance.
The 3TM have picked up a game away to Ryton which is a big journey for a third team but fantastic to see. Unbeaten in the league, the lads are looking for challenges outside of the structure.
Time to knuckle down and push on, we are in a great place but could have done better.
Big push starts now. #OSIOS

Colts
Grow your own strategy.
Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years.
Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams.
This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts
team who focus on the integration of
our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through

a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.
One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

The Rugby Codes
RFU Code of Rugby
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of
 our sport.
Teamwork
Respect
Enjoyment
Discipline
Sportsmanship
Play to win - but not at all cost. Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations
 of the game.
Respect opponents, referees and
 all participants.
Reject cheating, racism, violence
 and drugs.
Value volunteers and paid officials alike. Enjoy the game.
Club Code of Rugby
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf
of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
 a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you
all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her
 life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
