Welcome to Billingham, our members, volunteers, sponsors and supporters. Welcome to our town, our community and to our home! If there was a theme tune for today, it would by Green Day. Yes, today is a special day, a day we all need to record in our memory banks. “Getting ahead of yourself aren’t you Mark!” I hear you say. No, and this is the reason why. Who can recall where they were when we played our last game on Central Avenue? Who can recall where they were or who we played against when we played our last game on the old main pitch before we moved it? Who can recall where they were and who we played against on the last match before we dug up the new/old main pitch before the AGP went down? For those who haven’t joined the dots, today we play Sandal, today we play our last home game of the season, a season in which we are unbeaten at home, but above all, today, we play the last home match of our 100th year. Our next home league match, will be the first of our centenary year. So today is a big day for many reasons, so enjoy it, absorb it, record it. Today has been 100 years in the making. When you look around at each other in the changing room before the game, when you look around the pitch at your friends, when you look around our home, in our town, breath and take it all in. What you see in front of you has been a 25 year journey, a lot of hard work on and off the field and 100 years of history. So, todays match, yes we all know what could happen, but I’m leaving that part to Peter, Danny, Elliott and the other 16 players in the squad. History exists because someone recorded an event that occurred at a point in time. If it was never documented, if it was never recorded, it never became part of history. Individuals can write their own history, clubs can write their own history, but a team can create a legacy! Today is not just about the 18, it’s not just about the last 100 years, it’s about everyone, no matter how small, who has been a part of our journey. Our strength has always come from within, our spirit is our strength, and we haven’t done bad for an ex-works team. So today is about the past, but it’s also about our future. So from your Chairman who could not be more honoured or more proud, I say to you who know and understand ‘OSIOS’. 5 PETER EVANS SENIOR COACH Senior Coach Update Last one from me for this season… Seems odd to be talking about the end of the home league season in February but here we are. We do still have 3 games with a gap week coming up so it’s not the end of the road. That said there is a potential carrot dangling in the offering: the league title. To get to this position last week was a must win and we did get out of Nottingham with 5 points but may come at another cost with a few lads with knocks. It is that time of year and we have some brilliant players missing for the rest of the season but it now shows the depth we have with people taking chances. This week Sandal come to town. We’ve had some great battles over the years (both wins and losses) and they are without doubt the form side in the league. Recent away wins at Alnwick and Heath as well as a last minute win against York have shown them to be a side that refuse to lose. The last time they lost? It is obviously a big day for us with a lot riding on it but we have 4 games to get 8 points, a great position and certainly no panic stations. It is a big day all round as the 2s and 3s join us at home so it will be a packed Saturday in the club with limited space. The 2s have been great this season and over the moon to be still in with a shout for 2 leagues and the 3s have really picked up the last few weeks. One last time, big shift and plenty of heart. It could/will be a special day regardless of results elsewhere. There is so much happening to the club over the summer before our centenary. What a time for this little club. Colts Grow your own strategy. 7 Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years. Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams. This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of. The key to this success is our Colts team who focus on the integration of our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice. One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player. We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected. Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club. ESTABLISHED 1924

Club Code of Rugby The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that a person... “Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”. Also “shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”. The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more difficult than necessary. I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
