STEPS 1 & 2:
PAGE HEADERS
& FOOTERS
Headers and footers are lines of informational text that appear
above or below the actual story of a book. They provide readers
with a reference point, such as chapter titles and the book name
as well as page numbers. Most non-fiction and cookbooks have
headers. Sometimes fiction books have headers. Poetry books
generally forgo headers to draw attention to the title of each
poem. Children’s picture books do not have headers.

STEP 3:
MARGINS
Margins are the white edges of the book that have no text or
artwork printed on them. This space allows for the reader to
hold the book without covering up text or text running into the
book binding edge. The amount of margin space can vary on the
size of the book. Smaller books tend to have smaller margins to
allow for more text on the page. If you would prefer an airy,
more open feel, then larger margins would be better.

Standard Margins = .75˝

Narrow Margins = .5˝

STEP 4:
DECORATIVE
EMBELLISHMENT
DIVIDERS
Decorative embellishment dividers are used to represent a
change in time or place. It can also signal a change in narrative
point of view. The decorative embellishment can be generic or
tie in to the cover artwork’s theme—e.g. a shell, if the book has
a tropical theme.

STEP 5:
FONT SELECTION –
BODY TEXT
When choosing fonts for your book, is important to think
about the theme of your story and also your future readers.
With many books, the only consideration is a clean, easy-to-
read font. However, books that are to be for younger or older
readers should have a larger, more pronounced feel to them.
A script font for the body should NEVER be used, as it is too
difficult to read. If you have multiple fonts, you should keep it
to two or three fonts. Fonts can be used to offset important
or different text, such as a piece of correspondence or a photo
caption. If you choose a special font that is not “open use,” you
will need to buy the license for the font and provide the font
and license to us. Commercial use must be permitted.

STEP 6:
FONT SELECTION –
CHAPTER TITLE
TEXT
Section or chapter title fonts are usually matched to the front
cover, but you may wish to have a different font to add more
style to your book. While the body of the text should be clean
and easy to read, the chapter titles can be more decorative,
adding to the theme or feel of your story. The sky is the limit
with title fonts, but if you choose a special font that is not “open
use,” you will need to buy the license for the font and provide
the font and license to us. Commercial use must be permitted.

STEP 7:
PARAGRAPH
INDENTS
Most books use paragraph indents, but paragraph style can
also be a personal preference. If your book is short, then space
after each paragraph would be recommended to make your
book seem longer. However, if your book is long, then indented
paragraphs with no additional spaces will keep the page count
lower.

NUMBERING

STEP 9:

A drop cap is another way to add a sense of style to your book.
Whether a large, strong letter or graceful script, your drop cap
will add to the depth of your story.

STEP 10:
CHAPTER FIRST
PARAGRAPHS
The first paragraph of a chapter can either be indented or flush
with the left margin. All chapters that start with a drop cap
will not be indented. If you choose to not have any paragraphs
indented, then the first paragraph will also not be indented.
Many authors do not indent the first paragraph as a subtle sign
of a new topic or idea.

STEP 11:
CHAPTER
START PAGES
The first page of a new chapter can start anywhere on the page
depending on any artwork that may be added or if you are
trying to keep the book longer or shorter. Some authors prefer
to have a minimal amount of white space and get right to the
story!
