6 ANGE POSTECOGLOU THFC

THFC ANGE POSTECOGLOU 7 “the players gave everything for the shirt and I can guarantee you they will do the same again today” he past fortnight has given us time to reflect on an eventful week before the international break. Firstly, the players’ efforts against Chelsea were outstanding in what was a dramatic game from start to finish. Reduced to nine men and losing two key players through injury, we went toe-to-toe with the challenge in front of us and stayed true to our beliefs in terms of the football we want to play. The fact that we almost equalised in stoppage time tells you just how good a performance it was. We gained so much from that as a collective and myself and the coaching staff felt so much pride in the squad. A few days later we made the trip to face Wolves and were disappointed to come away from Molineux with nothing, having conceded two goals so late on. I felt we had good control of the game, although could have been more positive at times. However, I couldn’t fault the players’ effort or commitment, especially given we had a lot of changes to the starting line-up. T Thankfully, everyone who went on international duty has returned unscathed, which is always a relief, and we know we will face another tough challenge today against Aston Villa. I should like to welcome Unai Emery, his players, staff and everyone associated with the club. The job Unai has done at Villa in just over a year is incredible and he has shown again what an outstanding coach he is – just as he did in Spain. Villa are a powerful, quick team full of quality players and we will have to be at our best this afternoon. We also need your incredible backing, which I know you will provide – as you have done every week this season, home or away. To hear and see your reaction to the players’ performance against Chelsea, even in defeat, was amazing. It was a truly special moment from a special set of fans. You could see that the players gave everything for the shirt and I can guarantee you they will do the same again today.

8 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 9 There’s a nice bit of symmetry in this week’s article as it transpires that just seven players have worn our number seven shirt since squad numbers were introduced in 1993/94 – and one name stands head and shoulders above the rest. In fact, not only has current club captain Heung-Min Son worn the jersey more than any other Spur in the Premier League era, he has donned the No 7 shirt more times than any other player in the club’s illustrious history. It’s certainly a feasible argument to suggest Sonny is the most famous number seven in our history. It’s fair to say that few Spurs fans would have really known much about the South Korean forward when he joined us from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015. However, 384 games later – every single one of them with our No 7 on his back – he is very much the darling of the Spurs faithful. Son’s debut came when Mauricio Pochettino started him at Sunderland in September 2015 and he opened his goalscoring account in the following game, scoring twice in a 3-1 Europa League win over Qarabag at White Hart Lane. He then scored the only goal of the game to get off the mark in the Premier League in his next match as we beat Crystal Palace 1-0 and the goals have No.7 in that NUMBER As this season marks 30 years since the introduction of squad numbers in English football, we take a closer look at the names and numbers that have formed our matchday squads since 1993/94 – and even further back in our history. NO. 7s…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Heung-Min Son 384 2. Aaron Lennon 245 3. Darren Anderton 138 4. Ruel Fox 123 5. Nick Barmby 79 6. Paul Stalteri 56 7. Simon Davies 29 continued to flow ever since. In fact, some of the most poignant goals in our recent history have been scored by our number seven, not least the first-ever senior competitive goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Sonny opened the scoring against

1 0 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC Palace on the night we officially opened the venue in April 2019. And it was with the No 7 on his back that Son dribbled past half the Burnley side to score a stunning solo goal that would win him the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of 2020, and netted a final day double against Norwich City in 2022, to jointly win the Premier League Golden Boot. Such a likeable character in the dressing room, it was no surprise he was handed the captain’s armband soon after the arrival of new Head Coach Ange Postecoglou and Sonny has grabbed the opportunity to show his leadership qualities as one of the more senior figures within a fairly young squad. Some famous names have worn our No 7 jersey throughout our history – including the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Clive Allen, Glenn Hoddle, Jimmy Greaves, Cliff Jones and even Steve Perryman wore it once – but no-one is more synonymous with the shirt than Sonny. It was another long-serving player that Son took the number seven jersey from, as he replaced the great Aaron Lennon. The England winger had started his Spurs career wearing No 25, featuring 119 times in the shirt before moving up to the more traditional No 7 for the 2008/09 campaign. Lennon’s first appearance as our number seven came on the opening day of the season when we went down 2-1 at Middlesbrough under Juande Ramos and he was a regular name on the teamsheet over the next seven years until he left for Everton in September 2015. Our first official number seven in the Premier League was Nick Barmby, who was handed the jersey when squad numbers were introduced in 1993/94. He had worn Nos 4, 7, 8, 12 and 14 the previous season but became a fixture in our side for a couple of years as he racked up 79 appearances in the No 7 shirt. When Barmby left for Middlesbrough in June 1995, he was replaced by Ruel Fox who immediately took over the number seven shirt and featured 123 times in the jersey before finishing his Spurs career wearing 18 on six occasions in 1999/2000. Midfielder Darren Anderton was already well-established at Spurs before he first wore our number seven shirt, against West Ham United on the opening day of the 1999/2000 season. Indeed, many fans will probably remember him more with the No 9 on his back before he switched to No 7 under George Graham’s stewardship. Another player to move to the number seven shirt was Simon Davies, the Welsh midfielder having featured as our No 29 for five seasons before spending his last campaign at Spurs in 2004/05 making 29 appearances with the No 7 on his back. Finally, it’s most unusual to see a traditional left-back wearing No 7, but that’s where you would find Paul Stalteri during his time with us. Joining us from Werder Bremen in May 2005, he played 56 times for us with the highlight coming at Upton Park, when he scored a dramatic late winner in our 4-3 victory over West Ham United. IN OPPOSITION… A string of big names have worn the number seven jersey down the years for Aston Villa, including the likes of Dwight Yorke, Tony Daley, Gordan Cowans, Steve McMahon, Ashley Young, Andy Townsend and Ray Houghton. Current incumbent is John McGinn – coincidentally the club captain along with our number seven – who has worn the jersey since the 2018/19 season. Further back in Villa’s history, it was Scottish midfielder Des Bremner who donned the number seven shirt on their biggest occasion when they won the European Cup, defeating Bayern Munich in the 1982 final. NO. 7s…TOP 10 APPEARANCES ALL-TIME (1946 TO PRESENT) Outside of the Premier League era, there’s a fairly even spread of appearances in our number seven jersey with Sonny Walters highest on the list behind HeungMin Son and Aaron Lennon. The Edmonton-born winger played a major role in Arthur Rowe’s side which won the Second Division in 1949/50 and swept to the League Championship title the following season, featuring 79 times as our No 7 across the two campaigns – and 232 appearances in total. 1. Heung-Min Son 384 2. Aaron Lennon 245 3. Sonny Walters 232 4. Terry Medwin 205 5. Ossie Ardiles 188 6. Alan Gilzean 166 7. Jimmy Robertson 160 8. Cliff Jones 154 9. Darren Anderton 142 10. Ruel Fox 123 AARON LENNON MADE 245 APPEARANCES FOR SPURS WEARING SEVEN

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 1 1 One of the lesser worn shirt numbers in our history, the No 45 has featured in just 27 Spurs matches down the years. It is Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius who has worn it the most, having been handed the number when he joined us for a season-long loan from Benfica in October 2020. Previously playing for the likes of Caldense in Brazil, Monaco and Rio Ave, it was in the Europa League that he first cut his teeth in our colours. With the unusual No 45 on his back, ‘Vini’ made his Spurs debut when starting our European tie with LASK and featured three times in the competition before making his first Premier League appearance off the bench in our 1-0 win at West Brom. That was the first time that the No 45 shirt was worn by one of our players in a Premier League match and Vinicius remains the only player to have done so. Vinicius opened his Spurs account with a double against Ludogorets back in Europa League action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in November 2020 and struck an FA Cup hat-trick in the January when we beat non-league Marine. It was in his penultimate appearance in our colours that Vini scored his first Premier League goal, in our 2-0 win against today’s opponents Aston Villa in March 2021. In total, he wore our No 45 shirt on 22 occasions, scoring a respectable 10 goals. He currently plays for Fulham. The remaining five outings for the number 45 jersey all came in cup competitions. During the 2012/13 season, striker Jon Obika wore it in a 3-0 League Cup win at Carlisle United and in our 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Leeds United, both times as a substitute. The first player to wear our No 45 shirt was Steven Caulker when making his Spurs debut in a League Cup tie at home to Arsenal in September 2010. The defender came through our Academy and went on to make a further 28 appearances for us, in the No 33 shirt. Another Academy product featured in the No 45 shirt when Anton Walkes No.45 NO. 45s… APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Carlos Vinicius 22 2. Jon Obika 2 3. Steven Caulker 1 4. Anton Walkes 1 5. Alfie Devine 1 came on for the closing stages of our 5-0 League Cup win over Gillingham in September 2016. That would be his only appearance for us but he went on to play for Portsmouth, Atlanta United and Charlotte FC before his sad passing in January this year. Lastly, Alfie Devine appeared in our colours for the second time in January when he featured in our 1-0 win against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, wearing number 45. His debut came in that Marine FA Cup tie two years earlier when, at 16 years and 163 days, he became our youngest-ever player and goalscorer, after netting in the 5-0 win. He was wearing No 54 that day!

THFC NEWS 1 3 Yves Bissouma says the team is living every moment as we approach the key winter and festive period of the Premier League. The Mali midfielder has been one of the stand-out performers in a start that sees us currently fourth in the table with eight wins from our first 12 games and he currently sits in the Premier League’s top news DESK 10 stats for tackles (36), interceptions (18) and touches (979). Now, as we enter the start of a busy spell that begins with today’s game against Aston Villa, Bissouma says that the team isn’t feeling pressure, but just looking to work as hard as they can every day. “It’s true, we take one match at a time,” said Yves. “We don’t try to put pressure on ourselves because as I told you, it’s just football. I don’t feel the pressure. We don’t feel it in the team. “We try to live every moment to its fullest. That means in training, we give as much possible. During the matches, we try to give everything. We know it’s the Premier League, it won’t be easy. There will be tough matches but we’re focused on ourselves and I think that if we do everything we need to do we have a good chance of fulfilling our ambitions and our goals.” Alfie Devine’s match-winning strike for loan side Port Vale against Mansfield last month has been voted the Carabao Cup’s Goal of the Round of 16. An historic strike as it sent the Vale through to the competition’s quarter-finals for the first time in the Staffordshire club’s history, the midfielder scooped the award following a vote by fans hosted on the Carabao Cup’s official X feed. Alfie – who is spending the season on loan at Vale Park – was also voted the Player of the Round. Port Vale will now host Championship side Middlesbrough on 19 December for a place in the competition’s last four. Rosella Ayane’s first two goals of the season capped a dominant 3-0 home victory over Bristol City in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Wednesday night. The forward produced two impressive finishes either side of half-time after winning the penalty from which Kit Graham fired us ahead, as our much-changed side made it two wins out of two in the competition to move to the top of Group D. A full report will feature in our next match programme. Turn to pages 40-42 for a complete round-up of our women’s team. Spurs legend Paul Miller recently paid a visit to Austria Spurs, one of our Official Supporters’ Clubs, to meet some of their members and watch a game with them. The iconic former defender was a special guest in Linz, where he took part in a packed-out Q&A session with Austria Spurs’ members before joining them for a live screening of our 1-0 Premier League win over Luton Town at the start of October. “The level of support and the Yves ready for tough tests Miller meets fans in Austria amount of fans we have in Austria – and indeed all over the world – is superb,” said Paul. “I was fortunate enough to spend time in the company of many of Austria Spurs’ members – my thanks to Alan Scopp, their Chairman, and everyone involved with the club, who all made me very welcome and treated me superbly. We were all delighted to witness another win for the team and it was a privilege to see first-hand just how strong our overseas fanbase is.” DEVINE STRIKE WINS AWARD ROSELLA AT THE DOUBLE

THFC F R O M T H E VAU LT 1 7 MUSIC IN THE ARCHIVE This week we’re thinking about music in our club archive. Music and song feature prominently within football, music played as the players walk out, the songs made up by the fans, or at international matches when the national anthems are played. There are loud victory songs and quieter songs for draws or losses. Music is also important to the players; we often see them before the matches with their headphones on. Songs are also written for big events and that’s what we’re going to focus on today. We’ve looked briefly at these objects before, but this time we are thinking about them slightly differently, thinking about the history of songs written for football clubs. The 1901 Barn Dance music is one of our earlier archive pieces and sitting inside this there was an additional sheet of music purchased from a music shop in Tottenham and it is a copy of two pieces by an H J King. As mentioned previously, the barn dance music was written for our captain, John Cameron, to celebrate the 1901 FA Cup Final win. It wasn’t until 1961 that another song was written for Tottenham Hotspur, when a group called The Totnamites produced their only song. They were rumoured to be a group of celebrity Tottenham fans. Although the 1967 team did record and release an EP, where the team sang classics such as ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ alongside ‘Glory, Glory, Hallelujah’, there wasn’t a charting single release until 1981, when Chas and Dave’s ‘Ossie’s Dream’ reached number five in the charts. Other clubs had been releasing singles over the previous decade, with Arsenal bringing one out in 1971, Leeds United and Chelsea in 1972, with West Ham, Manchester United, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest also releasing their singles before us. Our single however, inspired an ongoing musical partnership with Chas and Dave, with another three singles coming out up until 1991. Ossie’s Dream is the only one we have a copy of in the archive. Whilst the trend of clubs releasing songs has fizzled out in recent years, as other types of content have become more popular, these old songs continue to bring smiles to people’s faces. Finally, pictured here is an invoice from the Enfield Central Band, one of many in the collection, as they featured at most home matches. Here the invoice is for services rendered in April 1952, for matches again Portsmouth, Hibernian and Blackpool and they were paid £20 per match which, according to the Bank of England inflation calculator, is around £470 in 2023. The Enfield Central Band were clearly proud to be playing for the Club as we sat second behind the BBC on their ‘engaged by’ list on their invoices. Next time you’re going to a match, why not think about all the different ways music features. WORDS BY SIAN ALLPRESS Our popular feature is back for another season as we dig into the club archives to examine the items and objects which have helped shape our history…

1 8 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 1 9 BURGEONING BRENNAN purs have such good plans for me, and it was the right decision to make this step,” affirms Brennan Johnson, reflecting on his decision to sign for the Club in the summer. A deadline day signing from Nottingham Forest, the move signalled the next step up in Brennan’s promising career that has seen him make quite the rise since his professional debut in August 2019. From that first appearance at the City Ground against West Bromwich Albion, captained by our Club Ambassador Michael Dawson, to reaching the League One play-offs on loan at Lincoln City and then the Championship playoff final and the Premier League with his boyhood club, the forward is hoping he can keep that upwards trajectory going in Lilywhite. “Being at Forest for that long, knowing so many people and having all my friends and family from there it was a hard decision to make,” admits the 22-year-old. “But it was the right time, especially coming to a club here that’s so forward-thinking and has such a great team, manager and staff. “I’d seen them play already this season and was so impressed, it suited me at this point in my career and it’s pleasing they were able to get it done – I’m so happy.” The Wales international is full of praise for Ange Postecoglou, too, with our Head Coach making it a smooth process when he first joined and also for the clear instructions on how he would utilise Brennan in his attacking system. As well as Ange, our number 22 has utmost respect for the faith shown in him by former manager Steve Cooper, with whom he spent two successful seasons under at Forest as they secured promotion from the Championship via the play-offs and consolidated their top-flight status last term, and sees similar traits in both managers. “They’re both similar in that they WORDS BY WILL HOLDERNESS Catching up with young forward BRENNAN JOHNSON, who is relishing his new surroundings as he looks to make an impact on the next stage of his promising career. THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 1 don’t think they’re anything they’re not,” adds Brennan. “They’re really nice guys as well as great managers and I have full respect for both of them. “Steve gave lots of trust to me, especially in the final third, he wanted me to express myself and show my ability. “Ange speaks so well; I don’t think he wanted to over complicate things. He knew me and told me I’d fit in to the system well and what he wants me to do isn’t too different to Forest. “Under him it’s about trusting yourself, believing in yourself and playing to the system because there are different things I need to adapt to. “As everyone sees it’s a refreshing place to be; with the manager, new players and the ones that were already here and everyone getting behind it. “Once I’m fully involved, I’ll know where to be – I’m developing now and he told me it was the right thing to do, and the team suits the way I play, it’s a perfect match.” Often playing on the right wing or centrally at his previous club, the versatile attacker has had to adapt to playing off the left flank in a front three with captain Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski so far this term, star players of a high quality that he is learning from all the time. “I’m loving it – having players that achieved so much is so eye opening and a confidence boost. For me it’s only a benefit, Sonny being the main one as he is such a good player and has done so much. “I play for the side but there are lots of bits to pick up on such as finishing and movement. There are similarities and differences to learn, for now I’m just learning as much as I can.” Brennan made his debut off the bench in our stoppage-time victory over Sheffield United on 16 September, showing his sharpness in the box with a touch and finish that was narrowly “I’m loving it – having players that achieved so much is so eye opening and a confidence boost”

2 2 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC At various stages of Brennan’s burgeoning journey he has received words of encouragement from some of the game’s modern-day greats in David Beckham and our former star player and ex-Wales teammate Gareth Bale. Brennan’s father, David, played with Beckham in the Manchester United academy and the pair have stayed in touch, with England’s former captain messaging our number 22 when he signed for us. “He just wished me all the best at Tottenham,” he explains. “I’m not claiming to be mates with him, he has sent me some nice messages after going up with Forest and when I signed here he sent me a message of good luck. “Coming from a player like that it’s crazy. It’s disbelief for me that he’d message me and wish me good luck. I don’t take it for granted. I appreciate him taking the time because I know he’s very busy.” As for Gareth, he understands what it takes to become a leader for both Club and country, with 53 goals in 166 league games in Lilywhite while he is Wales’ record goalscorer and appearance holder, and the legendary forward has been publicly backing his younger compatriot in the media and on a personal level as well. “Watching him and seeing how well he did here and how much he progressed as a player was definitely a factor to me wanting to come to this club,” Brennan adds. “Of course, it was a different time, different managers, but it’s just the club that they are, they’re really developing and they’re always forward-thinking. “He was one of my favourite players growing up and watching him play for this club did give me a drive to want to do it as well. Once I signed, he wished me good luck which was really nice of him.” SUPPORT FROM THE STARS

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 3 ruled out for offside, and was given his first start in one of the biggest games of his club career in the north London derby at the Emirates a week later. He gave a good account of himself on his full debut against Arsenal, using his directness and speed in attack to good effect, until frustratingly picking up a hamstring injury just after the hour mark that ruled him out for the Liverpool and Luton Town fixtures. “It was frustrating,” he says. “Especially after getting my teeth into things playing against Sheffield United and Arsenal and unfortunately picking up the injury which put me out for about a month. “It felt like it was staggered in terms of settling in but it’s really nice to be back with the team, back playing and the football we’ve been playing has been positive on the whole.” The forward bounced back with two cameo appearances against Fulham and Crystal Palace, making a noticeable difference at Selhurst Park when he laid on the second goal for our Club captain, and then came into the starting line-up for Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Although consecutive defeats were disappointing from a results perspective – making it only two losses in 12 so far – Brennan’s maiden Spurs goal came three minutes into our away trip to Wolves in just his third start in our colours and almost secured a hardearned win at Molineux until we twice conceded in stoppage time to lose 2-1. Whilst the former Forest player was honest in his verdict of the below-par performance and inability to kill the game off last time out, he did share his pride at opening his account for the Club. Reflecting on that defeat in our last outing, he explains: “It happens in football… late goals, we’ve enjoyed them, now we’re tasting the defeat, and it’s sickening. It’s really tough to take and at the end of the day, it’s all about how we perform. “Obviously, everyone was gutted with the performance, but we can’t complain too much because we didn’t kill the game off. “It was a really proud moment to score for the club,” adds the Welshman. “I’ve wanted to do that since I arrived here, so it was nice to get the goal.” “Ange knew me and told me I’d fit in to the system well”

THFC OPPOSITION 2 9 NICKNAME: THE VILLANS FOUNDED: 1874 STADIUM: VILLA PARK ALL-TIME MOST APPEARANCES: CHARLIE AITKEN (660) ALL-TIME MOST GOALS: BILLY WALKER (24 The 52-year-old Spaniard enjoys a sterling reputation in coaching circles thanks to an impressive career that has taken in the likes of Valencia, Sevilla, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. During his stint at Sevilla (2013-2016), he won the Europa League three seasons in a row, while also lifting same trophy with Villarreal in 2021 (defeating Arsenal and Manchester United along the way). He reached the Champions League semi-finals with the Yellow Submarine the following year, before moving to Villa in October 2022. Aston Villa have started the 2023/24 season in outstanding fashion, going into the international hiatus in fifth place, just three points behind Manchester City at the top of the table. Their lofty position is partly down to their exemplary home form (13 wins from the last 13 games at Villa Park), despite injuries to key men across the squad. Summer signings including Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres have hit the ground running while striker Ollie Watkins is one of the league’s most in-form players. Jacob Ramsey gave the home side the lead after eight minutes, and a second-half free-kick by Douglas Luiz made the game safe for Unai Emery’s side, themselves chasing a European spot after a fantastic run of results. Jordan Ayew pulled a goal back for the visitors, but Harry Kane’s 90th-minute goal sealed the win. 02.11.14 VILLA 1-2 SPURS PREMIER LEAGUE On the same day a year earlier, another late Harry Kane goal gave us maximum points at Villa Park. Andreas Weimann opened the scoring for Villa but Nacer Chadli levelled on 84 minutes before Kane’s stoppage time free-kick won it. 23.11.03 SPURS 2-1 VILLA PREMIER LEAGUE Two goals in three minutes saw us come from behind again in a November clash with Villa. Marcus Allback had slotted home the opener for the visitors only to then gift us possession from which Rohan Ricketts levelled on 78 minutes with Robbie Keane then winning it. 30.11.85 VILLA 1-2 SPURS DIVISION ONE A win at Villa Park this month in 1985, Gary Mabbutt giving us the lead from close range after a Glenn Hoddle’s clever flick before Mark Falco pounced on a short back header from Dean Glover to make it 2-0. THFC M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N 3 5 COUNTDOWN DANNY BLANCHFLOWER One of the game’s greatest players who spent three years with Aston Villa between 1951-54 before Arthur Rowe secured his signature. As an inspirational captain, he led us to the League and FA Cup ‘Double’ in 1961, the FA Cup in 1962 and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963 as we became the first British team to win a European trophy. DAVID GINOLA Mercurial winger who scored 22 goals in 127 games for Spurs, helping us to the lift the 1999 Worthington Cup. A true entertainer with a wand of a left foot who scored some unbelievable goals in our colours, the French international left us for Aston Villa in July 2000 and spent 18 months in the Midlands before moving to Everton. ROBBIE KEANE A genuine goalscoring great who spent two spells at White Hart Lane and racked up 122 goals in 306 appearances for Spurs. Joined us from Leeds in August 2002 and became a real fans’ favourite, playing his part in our 2008 Carling Cup success. Ended his career at Aston Villa with a six-week loan from LA Galaxy in January/February 2012, scoring three times in seven games. HEUNG-MIN SON 09.04.22 VILLA 0-4 SPURS The goals were flowing freely when we travelled to Villa Park in April 2022 – and the home side were unable to stem the flow as Heung-Min Son inspired us to another big win. We’d netted 21 goals in our previous five Premier League games and made the perfect start in the Midlands as Son fired us ahead after just three minutes. But we needed a fine first-half display from Hugo Lloris to keep our lead intact before a devastating second period, Dejan Kulusevski scoring before Son netted twice to complete his treble. 01.10.07 SPURS 4-4 ASTON VILLA WHITE HART LANE One of the craziest and most memorable Premier League matches at White Hart Lane came on the night we celebrated our 125th anniversary back in October 2007. Our old stadium was rocking as the flags flew and we wore our special commemorative blue and white halved shirts, with the atmosphere going up a notch in the 20th minute when Dimitar Berbatov headed home Tom Huddlestone’s corner. But our birthday party looked like it was turning flat as Villa stormed into a 4-1 lead by the hour mark. Martin Laursen scored twice and Gaby Agbonlahor fired in an angled drive to put the visitors in command at half-time and they added to their tally through a Craig Gardner free-kick in the 59th minute. We refused to let Villa take the spoils on our big day though and showed great character to battle back. First, Pascal Chimbonda tapped home on 69 minutes to give us a glimmer of hope before Marlon Harewood bundled Darren Bent over in the box and referee Mike Dean awarded a spotkick which Robbie Keane duly dispatched. Then the stoppage time drama – the ball bouncing around in the Villa box before Younes Kaboul crashed it into the top corner to spark scenes of wild celebration around the Lane! PLAYED FOR BOTH HAT-TRICKS v VILLA BIRTHDAY BLOCKBUSTER ROBBIE KEANE GARETH BALE 26.12.12 VILLA 0-4 SPURS A Boxing Day to remember as we again stormed to a 4-0 victory at Villa Park, this time with Welsh wizard Gareth Bale the hat-trick hero. Again it was our second-half performance that decided the outcome with neither side able to break the deadlock in the opening period. But that all changed when Jermain Defoe fired us ahead on 57 minutes with Bale breaking through to score a quick-fire second four minutes later. He made it 3-0 from an Aaron Lennon pass in the 73rd minute and finished his treble with six minutes left.

3 6 OPPOSITION VIEW THFC ow did your move from Liverpool to Aston Villa come about back in summer of 1992? I’d just come off what was probably my best season with Liverpool, in terms of the number of goals I scored and performances but then they decided to let me go due to contract problems. The two clubs really that were trying to get me were Chelsea and Aston Villa. It would have been easier for me to go to Chelsea, they were actually offering me a longer-term contract, five years, so that would have been the more lucrative move. But after talking to Ron Atkinson and the chairman (Doug Ellis), I decided it would be better for me, career-wise, to go to Villa. I liked Ron as a manager, so I thought the best thing was to go to Villa. I got there and fitted in straight away because I knew a lot of the lads, I’d played with some of them for Ireland with ‘Big Paul’ (McGrath) and Steve Staunton and the likes, so it was easy to move and fit in because of the way they were playing football, it was very good. Villa finished second in the inaugural Premier League season in 1992/93. How fondly do you look back on that campaign? We were top of the league with six matches left to play. Losing to Blackburn away (3-0 on 21 April, 1993) was the game that really turned it against us. We lost our next two matches after that too and Manchester United went on to win the title. Despite missing out in the end, some of the football we played that season was an absolute joy to be a part of. So, I look back on the season very fondly still. What memories of matches against Spurs spring to mind from your Villa career? I remember scoring in a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane (12 January, 1994) in a League Cup tie en route to us winning the competition that season. What was funny about that match was we did karaoke the night before. Our results in the league weren’t fabulous, so I think Big Ron in his wisdom – and this separates great managers from good managers – knew we needed a bit of a lift so he arranged for karaoke at the hotel where we were staying. I actually went up first to sing and I can tell you, I can clear a room in 10 seconds flat! So that really helped to settle us down and then we could focus on the job in hand. I also remember a 4-3 win in the Premier League (19 November, 1994). I only live 20 minutes from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a good friend of mine is a season ticket holder there. I used to love the old White Hart Lane and obviously the new stadium, which I’ve visited a few times, is phenomenal. Ugo Ehiogu was a teammate of yours at Aston Villa and was a coach for our Development Squad when he tragically passed away in 2017. You must miss Ugo a great deal? Absolutely. It was a huge loss. You couldn’t get a nicer gentleman than Ugo. He was one of the nicest lads I ever came across, very respectful, very humble. He was an absolute dream. He took a bit of stick in his early career, as with many youngsters when you make a mistake it gets highlighted, but he took it all in his stride. I really cannot speak highly enough about him. I was delighted when he went to Spurs as Under-21s manager. He’d have been great with the youngsters because he had that empathy with them as well after what he’d had to go through, and OPPOSITION VIEW H Each matchday, ANDY GREEVES speaks to a player that formerly turned out for our visitors. Today, RAY HOUGHTON looks back on encounters with us during his Aston Villa career, during which time he scored 11 goals in 117 appearances between 1992 and 1995.

THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 3 7 he knew how to handle them. We’ve also sadly lost another one of my former Villa teammates – Dalian Atkinson. Another great guy and a huge loss. Who were the Spurs players you admired during your playing career? Obviously, Gazza is the first name that comes into my head. I played against Glenn Hoddle when I was at Oxford. We played at White Hart Lane in one of Glenn’s last matches for Spurs (25 April, 1987) before he went to Monaco. He scored that famous goal where he went through about four of our players, including our goalkeeper who he dummied and then just rolled the ball into an empty net! Steve Perryman, who came to Oxford after Spurs, was fantastic. And there are so many names I could mention… like Chris Waddle and Gary Lineker, who was a great goalscorer. How much are you looking forward to this afternoon’s match? What you’ve got coming into this game is two teams that are playing really well. You’ve got a Spurs side now that the fans are really enjoying watching. They are playing exciting, open, attractive football and though they’ve had a couple of defeats recently, which will have jolted them somewhat, even Manchester City will lose games during the season. As for Villa, I like what Unai (Emery) has done. He came in and he’s got the players playing in a manner which brings out the best in them. They are giving consistent performances week in, week out. Previously you may have got an eight out of 10 one week, but then only five out of 10 the next, but now they are playing at a high level much more consistently. I do think now teams will expect a tough game from Villa and this one is going to be a difficult one to call between the two teams, because just the way the season is panning out at the moment. I think you have Manchester City and Liverpool a little ahead of the rest in terms of firepower but then you’ve got Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, and then I think Villa and Chelsea are up there too. “emery came in and he’s got the players playing in a manner which brings out the best in them. They are giving consistent performances week in, week out” RAY IS IMPRESSED WITH VILLA BOSS UNAI EMERY

THFC T H E D A LY C O L U M N 3 9 play, which is why Rodrigo Bentancur’s return feels key. After three substitute appearances for his club, he lined up twice for Uruguay this month after his ACL injury. The former Juventus man pinched the ball from Lionel Messi for Uruguay’s second goal in a win over Argentina, before playing an impressive 86 minutes against Bolivia. Bentancur, as was evident seconds into his debut, is press-resistant, able to spin away from the opposition in possession. Many of you may well be having similar conversations as to how Spurs line-up today. But Postecoglou said recently, whoever he brings in will add “different qualities to (the team), but it won’t change our overall structure or intent in the way we want to play.” After what we saw with against Chelsea, I don’t think anyone doubts that. here are only two states as a manager,” reflected Ange Postecoglou recently, “you’re either under siege, or it’s coming.” His wise words came before the trip to Wolves, in the aftermath of injuries and suspensions picked up against Chelsea. So what does he have to deal with today? One conundrum is how to configure a midfield missing the injured James Maddison and suspended Yves Bissouma. Let’s begin with the former – the Premier League signing of the season with three goals and five assists. Maddison’s defence splitting pass against Liverpool, the bamboozling of Bukayo Saka and his touchline magic to set up the Luton winner were as brilliant as they were unique. “I don’t think you can replace him,” said Postecoglou recently, “but the system kind of adjusts to the individuals within it.” So, what are the options? Giovani Lo Celso returns from international duty with Argentina, having started against Brazil to set up the winner. He shone in pre-season, scoring against West Ham United and Lion City Sailors, before impressing against Barcelona. After 18 months away on loan, Lo Celso provided a reminder of his ability to drift in to the box with and without the ball to hurt defences. Rarely have he and Maddison been on the pitch at the same time – and while they have differing attributes, they interchanged that attacking midfield role before the season properly started. However, as Postecoglou hinted, it may not be about finding the most direct Maddison replacement – but a suitable balance in midfield. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg came in against Wolves. Oliver Skipp may get a chance. There’s also Jamie Donley – on the bench against Liverpool and Wolves. With four goals and eight assists in Premier League 2 so far, he’s also caught the eye again this month, scoring in both England Under-19 matches. “He’s a creative player who can see things on the pitch that are really exciting,” Spurs’ Under-18s coach Stuart Lewis told me recently, explaining he plays with bravery and “looks at a James Maddison” as to the kind of role he’d enjoy in this team. But it isn’t only Maddison who has the temerity to take the ball on under pressure. Yves Bissouma, back to goal, surrounded by players, will happily manoeuvre his way out of trouble. So much of this is integral to the way Spurs Another instalment of SPURSPLAY’s ROB DALY’s regular column and this week he discusses the midfield options available to us this afternoon… W O R D S B Y R O B D A LY T“ RODRIGO BENTANCUR COULD BE KEY AS HE RETURNS FROM INJURY

4 0 SPURS WOMEN THFC DOMINANT DISPLAY ENDS ALL SQUARE Celin Bizet’s second goal in as many games ensured a third consecutive 1-1 draw in the Women’s Super League last Sunday as we shared the spoils with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Trailing to Janice Cayman’s 18th-minute opener, we controlled the game for large spells and forced Leicester goalkeeper Janina Leitzig into a string of stops, including a remarkable triple save just before the half-hour mark as Jess Naz, Ashleigh Neville and Angharad James all went close. Bizet ran onto an excellent through ball from Martha Thomas to equalise 11 minutes after half-time but try as we might, we couldn’t find a winner, with the hosts not without their own threats, Sam Tierney rattling the crossbar in one of their better attempts on the hour mark. Substitute Rosella Ayane had a couple of opportunities midway through the second half, while Thomas’ last-minute shot was straight at Leitzig as we had to settle for a point. Leicester City: Leitzig, Tierney (c), Bott (Draper 88), Howard, Nevin, Green, Rantala (Palmer 73), Goodwin (Whelan 46), Cayman, Cain (Baker 73), Petermann. Substitutes (not used): Votikova, Turner, Graham, Zadorsky, Pearse, Zhang. ROBERT PICKS OUT THE POSITIVES Robert Vilahamn again pointed to the manner of the performance as a positive sign after we played out our third consecutive 1-1 draw in the Women’s Super League at Leicester City on Sunday. Having surrendered the lead at home to both Everton and Liverpool to share the spoils in our previous two matches, this time we had to fight back from behind to earn a point at the King Power Stadium. Our Head Coach was understandably disappointed not to have claimed maximum points, but was nevertheless impressed with the way in which we took the game to our hosts. “In the other two games we’ve led 1-0 and they came back to 1-1 and then you are very disappointed but I think here they started well,” he said. “They created a good chance, they created one nice goal but after that we actually created a lot of good chances in the first half and in the second I think we were actually are brilliant – we played in the offensive way we want to, we played through them, we created chances, we pressed high, scored one beautiful goal and we had so many chances, so for me that’s a great performance in a tough away game. It’s too bad we didn’t win but we are focusing on how we perform and right now the girls are brilliant.” SPURS WOMEN SPURS WOMEN CELIN BIZET FIRES IN OUR EQUALISER AT THE KING POWER STADIUM

THFC SPURS WOMEN 4 1 SUMMANEN SIGNS UP We recently announced that Eveliina Summanen has signed a new contract with the Club, which will run until June, 2026. Signed in January, 2022, from Kristianstads DFF, the Finland international midfielder has established herself as a key figure in our women’s first team in recent seasons. A regular starter, the 25-year-old has made 43 appearances for us in all competitions to date, scoring six goals. A senior international for Finland since 2017, Eveliina represented her country at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament finals and scored twice in Finland’s recent 2-0 victory in Croatia, to maintain their 100 per cent record in the inaugural UEFA Women’s Nations League. “I’m very happy to be here,” said Eveliina. “I’m very happy the Club wanted me to stay here, it was an easy decision for me and I’m looking forward to the coming years. “I feel relaxed playing, everyone has clear instructions about what to do but at the same time a little bit of freedom on the pitch. The way we’re playing at the moment suits me and suits pretty much everyone in the squad at the moment so I’m enjoying it a lot.” CELIN’S STRIKE NOT ENOUGH Celin Bizet’s stunning solo goal was cancelled out by Sophie Roman Haug midway through the second half as Liverpool held us to our second consecutive 1-1 home draw in the Women’s Super League on 12 November. Leading in the first half at Brisbane Road, just as we had done against Everton the previous weekend – this time through a moment of magic from Bizet who dribbled from the half-way line before firing past Rachael Laws from the edge of the box – we suffered a lapse in concentration and allowed Roman Haug to head home and secure a share of the spoils for the visitors. Both sides had chances to win it but we couldn’t quite hit the attacking heights of the previous game against the Reds’ Merseyside rivals and while there was a welcome return to action for Ellie Brazil after more than a year on the sidelines, midfielder Olga Ahtinen will be out of action for a few weeks after suffering an MCL injury. THFC SPURS WOMEN 4 3 TOFFEES HIT BACK TO EARN A POINT A late penalty converted by Aurora Galli left us frustrated as we had to settle for a point in our Women’s Super League clash with Everton at Brisbane Road on 5 November. Deservedly ahead at the break through Grace Clinton’s header, we were made to rue a handful of missed chances as the visitors came back late in the game to secure a 1-1 draw, Galli blasting past Becky Spencer from the spot after Clinton was adjudged to have pushed Heather Payne to the ground in the box. Spencer had shown her resilience throughout the contest, but it was her opposite number Courtney Brosnan who Everton had to thank for pulling off several saves, denying Drew Spence, Celin Bizet twice Martha Thomas and Clinton as we dominated for long spells. 4 4 UNDER-21S THFC RIO’S GRAND GOAL SEALS WIN AT POSH Rio Kyerematen lit up a grey afternoon with a stunning goal as our Under-21s toppled Peterborough United 2-0 to make it three wins out of three in the Premier League Cup on 12 November. The midfielder capped a composed display in the central areas by unleashing a thunderbolt into the top corner from 30 yards to make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute at Stamford AFC’s new Zeeco Stadium. Will Lankshear bagged the opener from Jamie Donley’s assist on 24 minutes, with both of our goals coming from us winning possession in opposition territory. Substitute (not used): Keeley. ENGLAND JOY FOR LANKSHEAR Striker Will Lankshear earned his first-ever England call-up this month, joining up with the Under-19s for a trio of matches in Marbella – and duly scoring in all three! The 18-year-old striker has enjoyed a solid season so far and his form saw the former Sheffield United front man rewarded with a first international opportunity, joining Club team-mates Luca Gunter, Ashley Phillips, Alfie Dorrington and Jamie Donley in the squad for games against Romania, Japan and Mexico. And Will well and truly took his chance, scoring in victories against all three opponents, with Jamie also on target in every game. “I’ve been working hard towards something like this for a long time now and I’m so glad that I’ve got an opportunity to put on an England shirt,” said Will. “I’m thankful to all of the staff and players here and obviously thankful to the England staff as well for giving me this opportunity.” JAMIE WINS MONTHLY AWARD Jamie Donley won the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for October after a fine spell for our Under-21s. The 18-year-old forward was in flying form last month, starting with a decisive brace – including an innovative long-range finish – as he helped Wayne Burnett’s side recover from 2-1 down to eventually win 4-2 at home to Chelsea. Assists then followed in a 4-2 league win at Sunderland and a 3-1 EFL Trophy defeat to Peterborough United’s senior side. All individuals have played really well so I think any of us could have won it, to be honest, just luckily it was me,” Jamie smiled. DISAPPOINTMENT AT CAMBRIDGE Our hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy were dashed on 7 November as we fell 4-1 at Cambridge United in our final group stage game. Goals either side of half-time from Kai Yearn and Saiko Janneh had given our hosts a comfortable advantage before Will Lankshear sparked a late fightback, steering home on 72 minutes. Jamie Donley turned the ball wide before we were twice caught out in our pursuit of an equaliser with strikes from Jack Lankester and Lewis Simper securing the win for Cambridge. Colchester United’s victory over Peterborough last week confirmed our exit from the competition. LANKSHEAR WINS IT LATE AGAINST CANARIES Will Lankshear’s late, late winner ensured we continued our perfect start in the Premier League 2 with a dramatic 4-3 victory at Norwich City on 3 November. Yago Santiago gave us the lead on eight minutes before Lankshear slotted his first of the night 12 minutes later. Norwich got a slice of fortune when Pedro Lima’s deflected shot looped in from 35 yards out to halve the deficit in the 69th minute, but just as Jude Soonsup-Bell had restored our two-goal cushion three minutes later, the Canaries staged a comeback through Ken Aboh’s brace in two second-half minutes before Lankshear clinched all three points in the third minute of stoppage time. 4 6 UNDER-18S THFC IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER FOXES Two well-taken goals in each half gave our Under-18s a deserved 4-1 victory at Leicester City on 11 November. Missing a handful of regular starters due to international duty and injury, we rallied together and responded well to the previous week’s 5-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace and in truth could have scored even more, Herbie James hitting the woodwork twice in the first half and Oli Irow denied by a superb save from Foxes’ goalkeeper Stevie Bausor in the second period while a handful of other chances also went begging. Yusuf Akhamrich’s cushioned volley through a crowded area gave us an early lead before Damola Ajayi finished off a counter-attack for 2-0. Kirsten Otchere netted for the hosts after the break but a third goal for us via Leo Black in the 66th minute gave us back the upper hand, before a fine individual strike from Tyrese Hall rounded things off. Spurs: Bloedorn, Black, Akhamrich (Logan 73), King, Chaplin (c), Hall, Irow (Orr 90), Morgan, Lehane (Adewole 82), Ajayi, James. Substitutes (not used): Archer, Egan-Riley. CUP UPDATE We have been drawn away to Brentford in the third round of the FA Youth Cup. Ties are due to be played by 16 December – full details on the scheduling of our match will be confirmed in due course. In addition, yesterday’s Under-18 Premier League Cup group stage fixture at Barnsley was postponed due to the hosts’ involvement in the FA Youth Cup. A new date will be confirmed shortly – check out tottenhamhotspur.com for all the latest fixture developments. DUO SHINE FOR ENGLAND Mikey Moore and Callum Olusesi produced fine goalscoring displays to help England Under-17s book their place in March’s elite round qualifiers for the European Under-17 Championship with three consecutive wins in Croatia earlier this month. Mikey stole the show with a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over the host nation on 9 November, having also scored in an 8-0 thrashing of the Faroe Islands in the first game six days earlier. Callum bagged an equally impressive brace in a 5-0 triumph over Kosovo on 6 November. COSTLY FIRST HALF AGAINST PALACE We suffered our first Under-18 Premier League defeat since the opening day of the season on 4 November, going down 5-2 at home to Crystal Palace. All the goals came during a remarkable first half as we recovered from conceding twice in the opening 12 minutes to draw level at 2-2 by the 20th minute through Damola Ajayi and Ellis Lehane – only to then slip back into a similar predicament with the visitors scoring three more times before the break, including a hat-trick for skipper Zach Marsh, to leave us with a mountain to climb once more. Tyler Whyte and Seb Williams netted the visitors’ other goals. Spurs: Bloedorn, Black, King, Chaplin (c), Egan-Riley (James 46), Hall, Ajayi, Morgan (Adewole 69), Lehane, Akhamrich, Irow. Substitutes (not used): Archer, Logan, Orr. LEO BLACK CELEBRATES WITH TEAM-MATES AFTER SCORING OUR THIRD GOAL AT LEICESTER MIKEY MOORE...IN FINE FORM FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY

THFC UNDER-18S 4 7 Here in the matchday programme, we give you a chance to get to know our latest intake of first-year Under-18s players. Today, we meet THEO ADELUSI… NAME: Theo Adelusi. POSITION: Central defender. BORN: 9 May, 2007, in Milton Keynes. LAST SCHOOL: Webber Independent School in Milton Keynes. WHEN DID YOU FIRST JOIN SPURS? “In my Under-15 season after being at MK Dons from the Under-11s.” HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A DEFENDER? “My first-ever football kit in 2013 actually had the number one on the back because I used to be a goalkeeper. I started in goal when I was about five, just because I was quite shy and I wanted to stay away from everyone in training, then when I got to about seven or eight I started to play in defence and just stayed there.” WHO DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH IN TRAINING? “I really like to watch Cristian Romero because he plays in my position and I like his focus and the way he wins the ball. He shows real passion in how he plays, so I like that as well.” IF YOU COULD MEET SOMEONE FAMOUS DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? “Probably Michael Jordan, just to understand his winning mentality and his dedication to his sport.” TOP THREE VIDEO GAMES? “EA FC, NBA 2K24 and GTA.” ANY PETS? “I’ve got a dog, a Cockapoo, called Bobo.” IF YOU COULDN’T BE A FOOTBALLER, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE INSTEAD? “Probably an accountant or something else to do with maths.” GETTING TO KNOW… THEO ADELUSI DATE H/A OPPOSITION RES AUGUST SAT 12 A ASTON VILLA 0-4 SAT 26 A ARSENAL 4-2 SEPTEMBER SAT 2 A BLACKBURN (U18 PLC) 3-0 SAT 16 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 4-2 SAT 23 H READING 3-0 SAT 30 A WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2-1 OCTOBER SAT 7 H NORWICH CITY 7-2 SAT 21 H CHELSEA (U18 PLC) 3-4 SAT 28 A CHELSEA 4-3 NOVEMBER SAT 4 H CRYSTAL PALACE 2-5 SAT 11 A LEICESTER CITY 4-1 SAT 25 A BARNSLEY (U18 PLC) P-P DECEMBER SAT 2 A FULHAM 11AM SAT 16 H WEST HAM UNITED 11AM JANUARY SAT 6 A SOUTHAMPTON 11.30AM SAT 13 H ASTON VILLA 12PM SAT 27 A BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 11.30AM FEBRUARY SAT 10 H LEICESTER CITY 11.30AM SAT 17 H CHELSEA 11AM SAT 24 A NORWICH CITY 12PM MARCH SAT 9 H SOUTHAMPTON 11.30AM APRIL SAT 6 A READING 11.30AM SAT 13 H FULHAM 11AM SAT 20 A CRYSTAL PALACE 11AM SAT 27 H WEST BROMWICH ALBION 12PM MAY SAT 4 H ARSENAL 11AM SAT 11 A WEST HAM UNITED 11AM P W D L F A D PTS TOTTENHAM 9 7 0 2 30 20 +10 21 FULHAM 9 6 0 3 28 20 +8 18 WEST HAM 8 5 1 2 20 10 +10 16 ASTON VILLA 9 5 1 3 31 22 +9 16 CRYSTAL PALACE 9 4 3 2 25 17 +8 15 CHELSEA 7 5 0 2 22 14 +8 15 ARSENAL 9 4 3 2 22 17 +5 15 LEICESTER CITY 9 3 3 3 20 20 +0 12 WEST BROM 9 3 1 5 18 24 -6 10 BRIGHTON 9 2 3 4 20 24 -4 9 SOUTHAMPTON 9 2 2 5 12 24 -12 8 READING 9 2 1 6 11 22 -11 7 NORWICH CITY 9 0 0 9 13 38 -25 0 FIXTURES & RESULTS UNDER-18s PL TABLE HOME GAMES PLAYED AT HOTSPUR WAY ALL FIXTURES SUBJECT TO CHANGE UP TO AND INCLUDING 19.11.23

THFC GARETH BALE 4 9 THE RETURN OF BALE! After all the glory and the accolades in 16 years in the game, five Champions Leagues – scoring one of the best goals ever seen in a final – leading Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and then a first World Cup since 1958, Gareth Bale never lost his connection with Spurs. He was away from the Club between 2013-20, when he returned for a season’s loan that just felt like it was meant to be, scoring 16 goals in his 34 appearances in 2020/21, before finally retiring on a high and that appearance at the 2022 World Cup, his final goal against the USA in Qatar. The only thing missing from that journey was the chance to get close to the fans again in 2020/21, the season hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and played in empty stadia. He put that right on 5 November, when he finally stepped out in front of 60,000-plus adoring Spurs fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “It’s great to be back. I loved my time here at Tottenham and coming back again on loan, so it’s great to be in familiar surroundings with such amazing fans. It’s like coming home, definitely...” Speaking to the fans on the night of his return to N17, Gareth discussed his time at Spurs and recalled the highs and lows of his time with us. Here’s what he had to say… GARETH BACK IN N17 EARLIER THIS MONTH

5 0 GARETH BALE THFC EARLY DAYS Gareth walked through the door at Spurs in May, 2007, having played 38 games in the Championship for Southampton in 2006/07, and earned his first Wales cap. He was 17... “I still remember like it was yesterday, not realising how big a club Tottenham was until I came here and saw the amazing fans, the support abroad, the support at the stadium and the club has just continued to grow and grow and grow under great leadership. It’s been an incredible journey and the best thing I ever did, move to Tottenham.” TOUGHER TIMES Despite early goals in 2007/08, Gareth faced some tough times in his early days at Spurs. A couple of serious injuries forced him to miss chunks of his first couple of seasons, reflected in just 12 and then 30 appearances in his first two campaigns. By then, though, Harry Redknapp had arrived, and things were about to change... “It wasn’t the easiest of starts, being such a young boy at the time and things not really going my way. I felt my performances were okay, the team was in a bit of transition as well, which didn’t help, but it just shows for players coming through who are not having such a good time, they can look at my journey, my story, where it wasn’t good at the start, but if you continue to work hard and the club keeps backing you, then you can turn your fortunes around and put yourself back on the right track to achieve some good things.” INTER SPACE Gareth became a permanent starter in Harry Redknapp’s team from January, 2010. Benoit AssouEkotto was at the Africa Cup of Nations and Gareth’s chance arrived in an FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough United at the Lane. He destroyed Posh down the left as we won 4-0, and was never out of the team from that day. Vital goals arrived in must-win derbies against Arsenal and Chelsea in April, 2010 as we made it into the top four and Champions League football for the first time. We were drawn against holders Inter Milan in the group stage, and the rest is history. Bale scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 defeat at the San Siro before tearing Brazil’s Maicon apart in the return, a 3-1 win. Gareth’s star was born on the world stage, and he never looked back.... “For me, personally, I just feel that was the moment where I realised that I belonged on the world stage, that I could compete against the best players in the world. I always say that was the platform, that moment, that game, the moment I felt I could do something really big in football. It gave me so much confidence going forward that whoever I was playing against, I felt I could get the better of and gave me the confidence to grow.” GROWING IN CONFIDENCE AS THE GOALS FLOWED HARRY REDKNAPP TAKES THE REINS SIGNING FOR SPURS IN 2007 GARETH DESTROYS INTER
