Spurs v Villa PL 23/24

THFC GARETH BALE 5 1 GOAL-DEN DAYS Gareth scored 38 goals in 86 appearances in all competitions in 2011/12 and 2012/13. Handed a free role in the forward line by Andre Villas-Boas in 2012/13, he responded with 26 goals in 44 games, many of them spectacular strikes – against West Brom, Southampton, West Ham to name a few, not even mentioning numerous free-kicks. His displays earned a PFA Player and Young Player double in 2012/13 at the age of 23 and he signed off in style with another beauty against Sunderland. “When I look back, and now I’ve retired, I’ve been able to look back at my career and reminisce over these moments and dig deep into what I remember and what I felt at the time, even watching videos… it was an incredible journey coming from a club that was, I guess, mid-table to top and just really grew. It was that journey I loved, becoming a very prominent team in the Premier League, and it’s continued ever since.” THE RETURN - 2020/21 After seven years at Real Madrid, Gareth returned to N17 on loan in 2020/21. He started 19 of his 34 appearances in all competitions, weighing in with 16 goals and more moments to remember, not least a hat-trick against Sheffield United and then two late goals to beat Leicester City on the final day and grab the last European spot. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic meant his second spell was played in front of empty stadia. His final total in Lilywhite – 71 goals in 237 appearances. “My idea was to come back in front of a full house in this incredible stadium, but it wasn’t meant to be in terms of the fans being here. Again, I loved my time here and maybe I didn’t have as big an impact as I did the first time, which I knew coming into it was never going to be the case at my age but, again, I made more great relationships at the club, I enjoyed being here, enjoyed playing. This club is so special for me and as I said at the start, it’s the best club I’ve ever been at.” END OF THE ROAD... Gareth returned to Madrid in 2021, won the MLS Cup with Los Angeles FC in 2022 and signed out in the best way – leading Wales out in the 2022 World Cup, taking his caps to 111 (and 41 goals). By then, he’d also been awarded the MBE. What a career – and always a Spur. “Retirement felt like a simple decision for me. Everyone will tell you when they retire that they know when the time is right, my body wasn’t feeling too great, I’ve a bit of a sore back most of the time, but I can’t complain about the career I had. I felt it was the right time to hang my boots up and I’ve been enjoying my time since.” WALES CAPTAIN AT THE QATAR WORLD CUP IN 2O22 SIGNING OFF WITH A BRACE AT THE END OF HIS SECOND SPELL

THFC TOT T E N H A M H OT S P U R F O U N DAT I O N 5 3 SUPPORTING LOCAL RESIDENTS LIVING WITH CANCER Ben Davies gave his support to a new Tottenham Hotspur Foundation programme delivering health and wellbeing sessions to local residents living with cancer. The sessions, which are an extension of the Foundation’s existing Shape Up With Spurs programme, are delivered in partnership with Enfield-based charity, The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. They consist of chair-based, low impact physical activity, under the guidance of Foundation health instructors, for people at various stages of their cancer journey. T h e s e s s i o n s a l s o e n a b l e participants to engage in conversation and enhance their social wellbeing as well as improve physical outcomes, with friends and family members also invited to take part. Ben recently dropped into a session held at The Nightingale, meeting participants and staff, taking part in the chair-based exercises and answering questions around health and nutrition as a professional athlete. Ben said: “The session was challenging and fun – it was great to be involved with the group. As players, it’s great to come out to the local community and see the work that the Club is doing. “Something as simple as an exercise class can make so much difference to people – it brings you into the present and provides a boost, even for a short period of time. One of the main reasons team sport is great is that you enjoy the highs together and in the tough times the team have your back. Everyone here is in high spirits and you wouldn’t know this was a cancer support centre.” A d a m M i l l a r , P r o g r a m m e Coordinator, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “We’re looking to reduce health inequalities across North London by providing free health activity sessions for different groups in different communities. Everyone is grateful and excited for the sessions, which makes our job extremely satisfying. People may expect a free session to be quite basic, but it’s far from it – our level of delivery is high quality. We aim to make sessions inclusive and fun so people keep coming back – long-term change is what we’re looking for.” Lucy McGinn, The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre, said: “It’s not just people who are diagnosed with cancer that are affected – it’s family, friends, colleagues as well. We provide physical and practical support free of charge, from fitness classes to massage, as well as emotional and peer-to-peer support. People can come here and essentially get a break from cancer. “The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation sessions bring a lot of laughter and they’re really engaging. It’s a big group and people have come away from the sessions saying they’ve had a good workout and it’s been fun. Fitness is so important for anyone, especially those who have had a cancer treatment in order to get back to feeling themselves. I’ve seen a difference in the participants with the big smiles they have on their faces at the end of a session.” To find out more about the wide range of free Health and Wellbeing sessions delivered by Tottenham Hotspur Foundation across the local community, please contact [email protected]

THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus this afternoon, goalkeeper GUGLIELMO VICARIO… NAME: GUGLIELMO VICARIO AGE: 27 BORN: UDINE, ITALY LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ITALIAN, ENGLISH, SPANISH How and why did you learn your languages? “When I played four years ago in Cagliari, there were a lot of players that came from Uruguay and Argentina, quite a big group, and it was the first time I could not understand anything, so I decided to have some Spanish lessons with a teacher at my house for five or six months, just to have the ability to know a little bit of what they were saying. It was a great opportunity for me to try to learn a new language. “Italian is my first language and then I started to learn English all the way through my school years until I was 19, then I had a few private lessons outside of school just to try to improve. English, I think, is the most popular language in the world so you have to manage it to speak with all the people you’re going to meet. Also, last season I had a lot of team-mates that came from abroad – New Zealand, Scotland, Austria, Romania, Albania – and everyone spoke English, so again it was a good opportunity to improve.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “This is an interesting question! Maybe Chinese. I know it’s so, so hard because there’s a completely new alphabet to Watch your language PENALTY AREA AREA DI RIGORE HEAD COACH ALLENATORE GOALKEEPER PORTIERE CROSSBAR TRAVERSA DEFENDER DIFENSORE TOUCHLINE LINEA LATERALE YELLOW CARD CARTA GIALLA OFFSIDE FUORIGIOCO FOOTBALL PHRASES IN ITALIAN learn, so it would be very difficult but it could be a new challenge.” How does Italian differ from English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “As a goalkeeper, when you cannot catch the ball, you ‘parry’ it as you would say in English, but in Italian you say a completely different thing, ‘deviare’, which means that you ‘deviate’ the flight of the ball. It means the same, but the word ‘parry’ for me sounds so, so different to what I have in my mind thinking about the Italian version.” WITH GUGLIELMO VICARIO GUGLIELMO IN HIS CAGLIARI DAYS

WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH? In the squad, I’d say Biss, James Maddison, also Vicario, he’s funny. WHO KNOWS YOU BEST? It has to be my mum, Kate. She based in Italy, although she’s coming over soon. WORDS BY PAUL MILES GETTING TO KNOW... destiny udogie Continuing our new Q&A for this season, as we find out a bit more about our players away from the pitch. Today, it’s the turn of Italian defender DESTINY UDOGIE. “I grew up in a small town called Nogara, a small town in Verona and had good times there, for sure” WHERE WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU NEED TO RELAX? 7 0 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL? My mum used to tell me that as a kid, I was always playing football with everything. WHERE HAVE YOU ENJOYED VISITING IN LONDON? I haven’t really done that as a tourist, as such, but I have been in central London for shopping, the centre is nice, I enjoyed it. DESTINY IS A BIG FAN OF PAPE MATAR SARR “my mum used to tell me that as a kid, i was always playing football with everything” HOW HOW DO YOU OVERCOME ANY SETBACKS? I just go through it, deal with it. I look at myself and say, ‘okay, it’s a mistake, deal with it and move on’. HOW MANY PETS DO YOU HAVE? None at the moment but I’d like a dog, a puppy. HOW DO YOU RELAX? Maybe just listen to music, relaxing on my phone, my iPad, just chill out. PRISON BREAK WAS A RECENT WATCH

8 0 M Y FAVO U R I T E . . . THFC WELCOME TO THE CLUB Play Now

THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 Continuing our new feature for this season, as we ask our supporters to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects. This evening, we’ve got a member of Maidenhead Spurs in the hotseat… MY FAVOURITE GAME: It started by flying from Southend to Rotterdam in a small VC1 Viking with 27 passengers at a cost of £8.50 to see Spurs play Atletico Madrid in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. The game started slowly but came to life when Cliff Jones crossed for Jimmy Greaves to score, followed by John White slamming the ball into the net. Early in the second half Atletico scored from the penalty spot that resulted in a good period for them that came to an end when Dyson, Greaves and a screamer by Dyson gave us a 5-1 win. Then the joy of seeing the team parading the trophy around the pitch as the first British team to win a European trophy. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER: Since 1959 Dave Mackay has been my favourite player.  He was the heart of our team, due to his skill, bravery, drive, competitive determination, strength in a tackle, excellent passing of the ball and with an astute football brain. Sadly Dave twice suffered a broken leg and missed most of the 1963/64 season and all of 1964/65 when Spurs did not win a trophy, but with Mackay in the team we won a league title, three FA Cups and, although he did not play in the 1963 European final due to injury, he played in all the earlier games. NAME: GAVIN BROWN AGE: 82 MY FAVOURITE GOAL: Ricky Villa’s second goal in the 1981 FA Cup final replay against Manchester City is likely to be forever my favourite goal unless a future FA Cup final goal secures our second Double. Graham Roberts gained possession of the ball following a perfectly timed tackle and laid it off to Tony Galvin. After a charge down the left wing Tony passed the ball inside to Ricky Villa, who evaded four defenders turning left and right before putting the ball in the net beyond the advancing Joe Corrigan in the City goal. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT: The short sleeve shirt with a thick ‘v’ neck and navy shorts worn by the Double team in 1960/61. A classic lilywhite shirt with the only addition on the front being the cockerel crest and without the Umbro branding or a sponsor’s logo. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY: From sitting outside a bar with a beer in hand, whilst admiring the west front of Milan Cathedral before going to see a 2010 Champions League group match against Inter Milan, what possibly could spoil the day? Well it did not take long. Inter scored in less than two minutes, Gomes was sent off with Inter scoring from the resulting penalty, followed by two more before half-time. Seven minutes after the restart Gareth Bale, with the ball at his feet, began a 60 yard sprint passing three Inter players before guiding his shot into the bottom corner of the net across Julio Cesar. Hopes were raised but 89 minutes were on the clock when Bale repeated his previous effort to score again. In injury time Lennon ran at the Inter defence before passing to Bale to complete his hat-trick. This was the night Gareth Bale became a Spurs legend. Want to feature on this page?
