THFC ANGE POSTECOGLOU 7 “These are the fixtures that really whet your appetite – two big clubs going head-to-head and one that should excite everyone” was pleased with large parts of our performance at Brentford last weekend, as we opened the new season. Brentford is a notoriously difficult place to go, they have shown over the past couple of years what a strong team they are and having gone 1-0 up, to then concede a penalty and score an own goal, it would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves and retreat into our shells. However, the reaction and resilience of the players was excellent, we were brave and controlled the rest of game for the most part, deservedly equalising just before half-time. Since our previous home fixture – a pre-season friendly victory against Shakhtar Donetsk – we have strengthened the squad with the additions of Micky van de Ven and Alejo Veliz, while also seeing Harry Kane transferred to Bayern Munich. Unquestionably, Harry is one of the greats of this Club, a world-class player and someone who has been a huge figure here for a very long time. He will continue to be that whether he is in the building or not. His standing among you – our loyal supporters – speaks for itself. However, it is important that we all now look to the future and get behind those on the pitch I as we look to build a team which excites you and can ultimately bring success. Micky has settled in well and I had no hesitation in starting him at Brentford. He had only had three sessions with us, so I could have waited. However, my feeling was that he will be a very good footballer for us and the quicker we introduce him to Premier League football, the better he will be. Alejo is a young forward with real potential. He will take some time to settle, however we are looking forward to seeing him develop as part of this squad. T h i s a f t e r n o o n we we l c o m e Manchester United to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and I’d like to welcome Erik ten Hag, his staff, players and everyone involved with the club. These are the fixtures that really whet your appetite – two big clubs going head-to-head and one that should excite everyone. Manchester United are a good side and it will be a decent test of where we are at as a team. We’re still progressing, we’re developing a new style and we are laying the foundations of what we want this team to be. Your support at Brentford was incredible and I’m looking forward to hearing more of the same today. TH02_06-07_Manager.indd 7 17/08/2023 09:29

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 9 There can’t be too many players whose nickname originates from their shirt number, but that certainly applies to Clint Dempsey. Our former USA international striker wore the No 2 shirt while making a name for himself as a teenager at Furman University in South Carolina, despite the number being more traditionally associated with the right-back position. And, when he took the number again after joining MLS outfit New England Revolution, he was given the nickname ‘Deuce’, a moniker which stuck with him for the rest of his career. When Dempsey (above) joined us from Fulham at the end of August 2012, he was delighted to find out that the number two shirt here was vacant and so he immediately took it on again. Although he only spent a season with us in north London, he donned the jersey 43 times and scored 12 goals in that time, including a match-winner as we beat Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in 23 years. Dempsey is very much an anomaly when it comes to our number two jersey in the Premier League as the other eight recipients of the shirt are all defenders – and all bar one of those right-backs. The other exception is Noureddine Naybet, the Moroccan centre-half who wore ‘2’ on 35 occasions between 2004-05. no.2 in that NUMBER As this season marks 30 years since the introduction of squad numbers in English football, we take a closer look at the names and numbers that have formed our matchday squads since 1993/94 – and even further back in our history. 1 0 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC Leading the way in our list of No 2s since squad numbers were introduced to the Premier League in 1993/94 is Academy graduate Stephen Carr, who appeared 195 times in the jersey during his time in north London. The Dublin-born right-back had already made 75 appearances for us before first wearing the shirt, having featured in numbers 27, 25 and 12. Carr first wore ‘2’ in our 3-1 defeat at Wimbledon on the opening day of the 1998/99 campaign and his 52 appearances that term are the most in the number two shirt for us in a single Premier League season. Dean Austin was the first player to don the shirt following the introduction of squad numbers. One of six players to wear it the season before in 1992/93 – along with Terry Fenwick, Justin Edinburgh, Stuart Nethercott, David McDonald and David Tuttle – Austin featured 108 times as our No 2 in the Premier League. Along with Carr and Austin, the only other player to break the 100-game barrier wearing our number two is Kyle Walker. Signed from Sheffield United in 2009, the England international returned to the Blades on loan and had similar spells with QPR and Aston Villa before breaking through in N17. He played exactly 100 times for us wearing No 28 before being handed the ‘2’ jersey for the 2013/14 season and going on to wear it 129 times. Pascal Chimbonda only had the No 2 shirt for two seasons and yet fell just short of a century of games in it. He was virtually ever-present in 2006/07 and 2007/08 as he notched up 98 appearances and was wearing ‘2’ when we won the Carling Cup in February 2008. Scottish international Alan Hutton has the honour of being our first player to wear No 2 in Champions League action as he featured in the jersey 51 times during his three-year spell with us, while Kieran Trippier donned the ‘2’ shirt in the Champions League Final against Liverpool in June 2019, one of his 73 appearances in the number. Finally, our most recent recipient of the number two shirt was Matt Doherty, who featured in it 71 times following his move from Wolves in the summer of 2020. IN OPPOSITION… Mention the number two jersey to Manchester United fans and they will almost certainly reply with the name Gary Neville. The Bury-born former defender spent his entire career at Old Trafford, winning a whole host of trophies and most of them wearing the No 2 on his back. Having initially played in the number 27 and 20 shirts in his early breakthrough years, he was handed the ‘2’ by Sir Alex Ferguson for the 1996/97 season – taking over from Paul Parker – and never looked back. Of his 602 senior appearances for the Red Devils, 533 were made as a number two. Other top names to have worn the jersey for United include the likes of Tony Dunne, Martin Buchan, Jimmy Nicholl, Arthur Albiston, Mike Duxbury, Viv Anderson and Rafael da Silva. Current holder of the No 2 at Old Trafford is Victor Lindelof, who has had the shirt since 2017. NO. 2s…TOP 10 APPEARANCES ALL-TIME (1946 TO PRESENT) Double-winner Peter Baker is the man to have worn our number two shirt the most in the post-war era, leading the way by almost 100 games. Making his debut in April 1953 in the ‘2’ shirt, he never wore anything else throughout his entire 13-year Spurs career, the highlight of which was the FA Cup and League championship Double in 1960/61, when he played 48 times in the jersey. 1. However, he wore the ‘3’ jersey in that League Cup second round, first leg clash but had switched to the No 2 shirt for the very first time when we faced United at Old Trafford for the return leg on 5 September 1979. THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 1 1 Four years after the introduction of Premier League squad numbers, we allocated the number 35 for the first time and it was taken by Italian international Nicola Berti. The tough-tackling, nononsense midfielder was signed from Internazionale by Christian Gross in January 1998 as we bolstered our squad to stave off any threat of relegation and Berti was handed the unusual number. And it was against Manchester United that he first wore the jersey, starting at Old Trafford when a brace from Ryan Giggs gave the home side all three points. Over the next five months, Berti was ever-present and played 19 times with the No 35 on his back, his invaluable experience gained from 10 years with Inter a real factor in helping us climb away from the lower reaches of the Premier League table. The following season, Berti (above) was elevated to the more traditional number four jersey but alas that didn’t work out for him and he played just four more games in our colours. Former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers is another to have worn the ‘35’ for us. He came through the ranks at Old Trafford and made six appearances for the first team during 2011/12 while wearing the number 51 for the Red Devils. He left Manchester to join Standard Liege in August 2012 but six months later he was on his way back to England when we signed him in the 2013 January transfer window. Initially spending time with our Development Squad, Fryers made his debut early in 2013/14 in a Europa League play-off tie with Dinamo Tbilisi and went on to make 16 appearances in our No 35 shirt. The only other recipient of the number 35 jersey is Dorian Dervite, a promising French defender when we signed him in July 2006. But he would only feature once in our colours when he started our League Cup tie against Port Vale at White Hart Lane in December 2006. No.35 NO. 35s…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Nicola Berti 19 2. THFC NEWS 1 3 Heung-Min Son has been named Club captain. Sonny, 31, takes over the captain’s armband from Hugo Lloris, who first captained the team in 2014/15 and was named skipper for the start of 2015/16 – Sonny’s first season at Spurs. James Maddison and Cristian Romero have been appointed vice-captains. South Korea captain Son approaches his ninth season at the Club since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in August, 2015. Scorer of the first Premier League and Champions League goals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, winner of the 2019/20 FIFA Puskas Award for his wonder goal against Burnley in December, 2019, Sonny added the Premier League’s Golden Boot to his long list of achievements with 23 goals in 2021/22. Last season, he became news DESK the first Asian to score 100 goals in the Premier League. Son said: “It’s such a big honour to captain this huge club. It was big surprise and a very proud moment. I’ve already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch. “It’s a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband.” Head Coach Ange Postecoglou said: “Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain. “Everyone knows he is a world-class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room. He transcends groups within the squad. That’s not just because he’s popular - it’s because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea.” We face a London derby in the Carabao Cup after being paired with fellow Premier League side Fulham.. The second round clash will take place at Craven Cottage on Tuesday 29 August, kick-off at 7.45pm and the game will not be televised in the UK. We’ve previously met three times in the League Cup, all of them in the fourth round. Our most recent tie with the Cottagers was in west London in November 2001, when Sergei Rebrov and Simon Davies scored in a 2-1 win. Two years earlier, again at Craven Cottage, we lost 3-1 to Fulham with Steffen Iversen our goalscorer. Our only home encounter with Fulham in the League Cup was in December 1982, when Micky Hazard scored the only goal of the game. Ticket details for this season’s tie can be found on page 27 of today’s programme. Joe Rodon has joined Championship side Leeds United on loan for the 2023/24 season. Signed from Swansea City in October, 2020, Joe has made 24 Skipper Sonny! Leeds loan for Joe appearances in all competitions for us to date. He spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, where he made 22 appearances and scored his first professional goal. THFC F R O M T H E VAU LT 1 7 Today we are looking at the collection on display in the home of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, Percy House. In this mini exhibition there is an array of items, some dating back to the earlier histories of both Warmington House and Percy House and others of a more recent and football specific nature. The cupboard is a ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ style display and invites the viewer to look through the glass windows to see the objects inside. The older objects were found during the restoration works of Warmington House and Percy House and would have been used by the people who lived or worked in the buildings in the past. These include wooden laundry pegs, some games pieces, an old doorbell, some clay pipes, glass bottles and a wooden board with surnames listed. This sort of material is common to find in historic houses, it is the sort of things people would have easily dropped or lost; it has little financial value but does help to remind us that people lived their every day lives in the spaces we use today. During the Percy House project, four children’s dance shoes were uncovered in Warmington House. They concluded the shoes dated back to the 19th century. Dance would have been taught at the school which Percy House was home to, as it was at many schools in that era, a key part of many a middle-class girl’s education. The shoes themselves are clearly well used, indicated by the visible wear to the outer soles and the darkened inner soles; whilst these shoes cannot be traced to an individual and they were likely used by more than one child, they provide a physical connection to the people long gone who existed in these buildings. Returning to football related objects, we have an array of matchday ephemera, including tickets from matches in 1975 right through to the first NFL game at the new stadium in 2019 and an away ticket for a WSL match in 2019 against Chelsea. There is also a personalised rattle on display, painted navy blue and decorated with newspaper cuttings which say ‘Spurs’. Whilst rattles are rarely seen in football crowds today, they were at one point incredibly popular. Rattles have been used as musical instruments for centuries, as percussion in folk music in Italy and Slovakia and as warning or signalling devices in the 18th and 19th centuries, even used to signal poison gas attacks in the trenches in the First World War. In sport their use faded out of fashion during the 1970s and were eventually banned during the 1970s to stop them being used as weapons during the heights of hooliganism. (Additional research byJoanna Yeung). If you would like to come into Percy House and see the collection in person, get in touch with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and ask to be put in contact with either Joanna or Sian. 1 8 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC TH02_18-23_Main_Interview_Maddison.indd 18 17/08/2023 11:48
THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 1 9 MADD ABOUT SPURS t felt unbelievable to be out there in a Tottenham shirt and I loved every second of it,” said James Maddison, reflecting on his competitive debut for the Club against Brentford. As Head Coach Ange Postecoglou took charge of his first Premier League game in Sunday’s opener at the Gtech Community Stadium, our new creative midfielder played a key role in our 2-2 draw with both assists to cap an impressive start to life in Lilywhite. Maddison wasted no time in showing his new manager exactly what he will bring to the team this season when his dangerous free-kick was met by Cristian Romero to give us the lead on 11 minutes. The Bees turned the game around in nine first-half minutes through Bryan Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa, only for our number 10 to turn creator again when he poked the ball to Emerson Royal who levelled from 25 yards out in first-half stoppage time as the game finished level despite us dominating for long spells in the second half. “The performance had a lot of positives,” added the 26-year-old. “In games like that where we dominate the ball, have a lot of possession and we play in the opposition’s half, those performances will normally lead us to three points, but it wasn’t to be. “Brentford are a well-drilled, low-block team and very rarely lose at home. It was never going to be easy, but it was a good foundation to build on and that’s exactly what we have to do now, we have to build on it. “We take the point, but you don’t want to be too content with just one point. We need to be winning games, and to do that it always comes from the performance.” Signed from Leicester City earlier this summer, it was clear why Ange wanted a player who has built a reputation as one of the most productive and talented midfielders in England’s top flight as he implements a new frontfoot style. Not only because of what Maddison brings to our attacking output on the pitch – only Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne (46) has been involved in more goals than him (39) in the previous two seasons – but also the character and personality he adds off it. These traits – alongside talent – are vital for Ange’s squad dynamic in building a positive, winning culture within the team which ‘Madders’ has settled into seamlessly with the Club already feeling like home. “All the staff and players have been so welcoming and friendly,” said the former Leicester man. “They’ve made it an environment that’s easy to transition into. “It’s very helpful when people, players and staff members are all so welcoming because it made me feel at home from the get-go.” Having made a good impression on Ange and his teammates, James was appointed vice-captain alongside Romero to support our new Club captain Heung-Min Son in a different leadership structure this season. Maddison was full of pride to be given the leadership role and, like Sonny and ‘Cuti’, only discovered the news with the rest of the squad in a team meeting ahead of the Brentford game. “It was unexpected,” exclaimed Madders. “I really didn’t have any inkling, the gaffer hadn’t spoken to me prior to speaking to the group. THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 1 “I was really honoured and proud to be given that leadership role. I’d have been the same whether he’d chosen another player to be vice-captain instead and I would’ve acted the same and shown my leadership qualities regardless. “But it’s really nice to get that recognition because it’s a role and responsibility I thrive in.” Whilst Ange has been quick to praise our number 10 since they started working together, it is clear the feeling is mutual due to a shared mindset on playing an entertaining style of football and the England international has really benefitted from the Australian’s direct style. With a big shift towards possession-based, attacking football, it will take time for Ange’s new system and philosophy to fully bed in, but our midfielder is confident that the team will play a brand of football which brings joy to our supporters. “It’s been brilliant, I really like him and can’t speak highly enough of the manager,” said Maddison. “He leads by example and when he talks, you listen – he’s that type of guy. He’s a very honest, straight-down-theline character; he knows what he wants, he knows how he wants his teams to play and takes the responsibility if that doesn’t work. “He says we’ll try to play how he wants the team to play, and if it doesn’t go right then it’s on him – it almost frees us up to give everything and perform for him. I think the fans will be really excited about the team they’re going to be getting behind this year. “It will be a team they enjoy turning up on a weekend and spending their well-earned money to watch. We play football because we love the game, but we also want to perform for our fans and perform in a way that they enjoy and feel satisfied after a game. That’s what football is about and that’s the way I view the game and the manager is the same. “Hopefully we can start with a bang at home today against Manchester United and it’s the start of a long, successful relationship.” This evening’s visitors to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Monday night. 2 2 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC As Heung-Min Son prepared to lead the side out for the first time in our league opener against Brentford last week - end, Madders received a text from his new skipper with an idea that involved taking the players over to our fans for their pre-match huddle to show unity between the team and supporters. The plan was well-received by the travelling contingent who were in full voice throughout and were acknowledged by Head Coach Ange Postecoglou at the full-time whistle. It was a lovely idea from the South Korean forward to think of subtle changes he could add to the group whilst putting his own stamp on the captaincy. “Sonny had the idea and he texted me,” Madders explained. “I thought it was brilliant to do the huddle in the corner with the fans and all go over at the same moment. “We would’ve clapped the fans anyway pre-game but when you actually go over that close and do the huddle in front of them they feel a part of it. We heard the roar after and they were with us for the whole game. “As our captain he’s settled into that new role brilliantly. Sonny’s a leader in terms of how he carries himself, he’s got so much respect from everybody here at the Club and he’s a brilliant fit.” Sonny’s show of unity TH02_18-23_Main_Interview_Maddison.indd 22 17/08/2023 11:48
THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 3 heading in 14 minutes from time as United found a way to win despite underperforming, something Madders is wary of. “They will always be a threat,” he said. “Against Wolves they ended up not being at their best but they managed to grind out three points and that’s a good quality to have and one we’ll have to be careful of. “I think the message at this point – especially from the players and the manager – is we just need to play our game. We need to try to impose our new style and system on the game and that can bring us success. “Of course, we’re not going to be naive enough to not look at United’s strengths and how we can deal with them but it’s also about looking at their weaknesses and how our system can exploit that.” Looking ahead to his first league appearance in our famous Lilywhite kit in N17, our vice-captain can’t wait to play in front of our fans and put on a display that is hopefully worthy of his name being sung in full voice from the stands. “I’m really looking forward to it,” he beamed. “I can’t wait to experience a home Premier League matchday as a Tottenham player and perform for the fans and repay their faith and spirit that they bring by putting on good, attacking performances. “A chant would be lovely though! No matter how many times you’re involved in football and how long you’ve been in the game, every single time you hear your name chanted and sung it’s a heart-warming feeling that you can’t really describe. A third-placed Premier League finish in his first domestic campaign provided encouragement and a route back to the Champions League, while Carabao Cup final success over Newcastle at Wembley gave the club its first trophy since 2017. The Dutchman won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, as well as coaching Go Ahead Eagles, Twente and Bayern Munich’s second team. Ten Hag has continued to reshape United since our last encounter in April. Long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea departed after 12 years at the club, to be replaced by former Ajax stopper Andre Onana. Meanwhile Mason Mount has arrived for a reported £55m fee from Chelsea, alongside Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund. Fred, Anthony Elanga and Alex Telles are among those to have exited in the summer transfer window. MARTIN PETERS Not many visiting players score a hat-trick at Old Trafford, never mind four goals but Martin Peters’ quartet at the Theatre of Dreams in 1972 gave us a resounding win. The England international, who joined us in the deal that saw Jimmy Greaves head to West Ham, had a knack of being in the right place at the right time and showed this to great effect on this occasion. He’d scored a first-half hat-trick as United just couldn’t cope with our attacking play, Peters scoring on 20, 24 and 34 minutes to leave us in control at the break. Bobby Charlton pulled one back but Peters had the final say, glancing a header past Alex Stepney to cap a memorable afternoon for him and the team. THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 3 7 ou won four major trophies during your time at Manchester United, including two Premier League titles. How do you reflect on that period of your career? PAUL: Being there around the time when all the success started for the club under Sir Alex Ferguson was very special indeed, with the FA Cup (1989/90) and European Cup Winners’ Cup (1990/91) wins shortly before I arrived. Then in my time there, we won the League Cup (1991/92), the all-important first title in 26 years, when we won the inaugural Premier League in 1992/93. Then there was the ‘double’ in 1993/94 – the Premier League and the FA Cup. Winning that first Premier League title was particularly special. Cups are great to win…they involve winning a certain amount of games and coming out on top in a dog fight. It’s fantastic playing in cup finals…a wonderful occasion for any player or fan. But the league is even more special because it’s about what you’ve put in across the entire season. It’s the ultimate achievement. You must have fond memories of United’s 4-1 win over Spurs at Old Trafford on 9 January 1993, as you scored your one and only Premier League goal for the club that day? PAUL: I’d love to be cool and say I’ve got forgotten all about it, but you’d be calling me a liar! So yes, I definitely have good memories of that game. Every club has good opponents and bogey teams. During my time at United, Spurs were a team we always seemed to do well against. Sir Alex used to hate losing against teams from London. He used to let myself and Paul Ince know that when we were at the club. Can you describe the goal? PAUL: It was one of those where I was trying to pass the ball off and go back to where I felt more comfortable. Spurs kept allowing me space to run into though, so I kept getting forward. I gave it to Brian McClair, thinking he might have given it out wide. But he played me back in and all I could do was carry on my run and strike the ball across the goal. (Erik) Thorstvedt couldn’t get down quick enough to the shot and I think Neil Ruddock slid in, but he was a bit too late. What I realised in that moment was that I was totally lacking in experience in what to do to celebrate! But it was a great feeling of course. During your playing days, who was the Spurs player you most admired? PAUL: I’d have to say Gazza (Paul Gascoigne), who I was fortunate to be in England squads with. I was about to say, ‘you knew what you got with him’ but of course, it was the exact opposite. You didn’t. And that was the genius of the player. Everything about Gazza was unexpected, he did things off the cuff. He was nervous about certain things but when he got on the football pitch, he was afraid of nothing. As much as the media build certain players up, I don’t think we have produced a player like Paul Gascoigne in the current climate. What are your hopes for this season for Manchester United? PAUL: I’m very encouraged by the fact Erik ten Hag has been bringing players to the club who are footballers, not PR exercises. Last season was a good one with some bad moments along the way. The manager fought his way through the moments of difficulty and so did the players and that’s a good sign. United aren’t going to win the league this season – we have to be realistic about that. And improving on last season will be hard because United won a trophy and finished in the top four. But you have to keep building consistency and that’s what Manchester United will need to do to continue their way back to the top. Ten Hag will want to finish closer to the teams above them last season – to get closer to Arsenal etc. Do that and win another trophy, and it will be a good season for United. You watch a lot of football here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in your punditry role with BBC Radio London. How do you think Spurs will get on this season? PAUL: I remember when I was out in Australia as a consultant back in 2009. I was watching the A-League a lot and a team called Brisbane Roar was managed by Ange Postecoglou. With Postecoglou, I initially saw someone who came across as brash and arrogant. But I came to learn, it wasn’t arrogance, it was a belief in his own ability and that belief was well-founded. He knew exactly what he wanted to do and he got the best from himself and from his players. He did so well with South Melbourne in the NSL before the A-League was founded in Australia. They were the team to beat when he was there. And he has done brilliantly ever since, in Australia, in Japan and with Celtic of course. If you’re a Spurs fan with this man as your head coach, I think you can be optimistic. You get all this talk in sections of the media that ‘he doesn’t know the Premier League’ but did Carlo Ancelotti know the Premier League before they came here, or Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger? And look what they did. They knew football, they knew what they wanted and knew the best calibre of players to improve their clubs. They knew the ways to keep those players sharp mentally and physically too. Postecoglou can do that at Spurs. Harry Kane going is a big loss of course. But maybe, just maybe, Kane’s departure enables Spurs to become a better all-round team? There was always the expectation on Kane to get the winning goal, to make the crucial assist. You look at the most successful teams over the years and they have a more equal spread in terms of goal scorers instead of so much responsibility being on the shoulders of one player. “i’m very encouraged by the fact erik ten hag has been bringing players to the club who are footballers, not pr exercises ” PAUL REMEMBERS ANGE POSTECOGLOU FROM HIS TIME IN AUSTRALIA Powering the fan experience One of the Premier League's most historic clubs has an iconic home. 4 0 HARRY KANE THFC 435 appearances in all competitions. Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “We have seen a product of our Academy system become one of the best players to ever pull on a Spurs shirt and become one of world football’s elite strikers. It has been a truly remarkable journey. “Harry’s achievements and records say everything about the player, and throughout his 19 years at the Club, Harry has been a model professional, on and off the pitch and an inspiration for young players who dream of following in his footsteps. “I should like to thank Harry for everything he’s done for us, all the memories, all the records – we wish him and his family all the best for the future. It goes without saying, he’s always welcome back. He’s a much loved and valued member of the Spurs family, forever in our history.” Speaking on the morning of his transfer to Bayern, Harry said: “I’m sad to be leaving the Club I’ve spent nearly 20 years of my life at. From an 11-year-old boy to a 30-year-old man, there’s been so many great moments and special memories; memories that I’ll cherish forever. “This is a thank you to all my team-mates over the years, all my coaches, all the managers, every single staff member to do with the Club, from the kit men to the chefs, everyone involved. Obviously I’ve built special relationships with a lot of people. “And, most importantly, a thank you to you, the Tottenham fans. From the moment I’ve been playing, I’ve been one of your own and I’ve given everything that I possibly could to make you proud and give you as many special moments as I possibly could and memories to hopefully last forever.” Last weekend, we said farewell to Harry Kane as he ended his long career at the Club when he joined Bayern Munich. Harry, 30, graduated through our Academy system to become the Club’s all-time record goalscorer, overtaking Jimmy Greaves’ 266 goals during last season. Having initially joined us as an 11-year-old, he worked his way through our youth set up and showed enough promise to earn a loan move to Leyton Orient for the second half of the 2010/11 campaign. Harry scored five times in 18 appearances at Brisbane Road and his Spurs debut followed when he featured in a Europa League play-off, second leg against Hearts at White Hart Lane on 25 August 2011. A few months later, he opened his goalscoring account in our colours, coming off the bench to net our final goal in a 4-0 Europa League win at Shamrock Rovers in Dublin – and he never looked back. Further loan spells came as he gained experience with time at Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City but, once back at Spurs for the 2013/14 season, Harry was soon among the goals again. His first Premier League strike came in April 2014 in a 5-1 home win over Sunderland and the goals just continued to flow ever since. On three separate occasions, he was crowned the Premier League Golden Boot winner (2015/16, 2016/17, 2020/21), all the time inching closer to becoming the greatest goalscorer in the club’s history. He finally achieved that feat last term, scoring his 267th Spurs goal in a victory over reigning c h a m p i o n s M a n c h e s t e r C i t y t o o v e r t a ke Greaves’ record. Harry would go on to add a further 13 goals last season, leaving us with 280 strikes in Farewell Harry! TH02_40-41_Kane 2.indd 40 16/08/2023 15:36

4 2 SPURS WOMEN THFC NEW COACHING STAFF FOR NEW SEASON Spurs Women are gearing up for the forthcoming Women’s Super League season with new Head Coach Robert Vilahamn in charge. Appointed in early July, Robert represented IFK Göteborg and Sweden Under-19 as a player, and began his coaching career in 2008 at Ytterby IS, immediately leading the side to back-to-back promotions. After a spell as Head Coach of the Under-19 team at Örgryte IS, he then moved to Qviding FIF, winning promotion in both his seasons in charge. Robert stayed at Qviding until 2020, when he was appointed Assistant Coach at BK Häcken, helping the side qualify for the inaugural Europa Conference League. Two years later he was appointed Head Coach of the club’s women’s team, securing Champions League qualification in his first season and reaching the Swedish Cup final in both 2022 and 2023. Following his appointment, Robert said: “It’s an honour to join this world-renowned football club and I’m truly motivated by both the challenge and the opportunity that comes with this role. The Club has a talented group of players and I look forward to leading this team in such an exciting project.” Robert’s coaching staff has also been announced with Vicky Jepson – who took over as Interim Head Coach last season – appointed to the role of Senior Assistant Head Coach, and Anton Blackwood, who has worked as part of our women’s coaching team over a number of seasons, named as our Women’s First Team Transitional Coach. This position focuses on working with our Under-21s players to transition them into the first team. Also, Perry Suckling now holds the position of Women’s Goalkeeping Coach. A tremendous servant to the Club for more than 20 years, Perry initially gained experience of working as a Goalkeeping Coach in South Africa before returning to the UK to take up roles with the England youth and women’s teams. He first joined us in October, 2000, and has had spells as both Academy Goalkeeping Coach and Men’s First Team Goalkeeping Coach since then, most recently with the men’s first team since 2021. LUANA AND GRACE JOIN UP Two new faces have joined our women’s squad during the close season with Luana Bühler and Grace Clinton now on board. THFC SPURS WOMEN 4 3 Experienced Swiss international defender Bühler joined from 1899 Hoffenheim and has signed a contract with us until June 2025. The 27-year-old began her career with FC Zürich, featuring in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and winning the domestic league and cup before joining Hoffenheim in 2018. In the last five seasons, she has made 100 appearances in all competitions for Hoffenheim, including eight in the Champions League, scoring six goals and wore the captain’s armband for the club. Bühler has won over 40 caps at senior level in all competitions for Switzerland, most recently at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. “I love the vision of the Club and it’s really ready to go stronger in the next years,” she said. “The WSL is a really strong competition so I’m excited to compete with the best teams in Europe. That’s what I’m going to look forward to. I really want to be part of the process to get the team stronger, to have good games and win games in the league.” Meanwhile, Clinton has joined us on loan from Manchester United for the 2023/24 season. The 20-year-old English midfielder began her career at Everton, rising through their youth ranks before making her senior debut for the Toffees in October, 2020. Making 20 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, she then moved to Manchester United ahead of the 2022/23 campaign before joining Bristol City on loan in January. Clinton was a key figure in the Robins’ FA Women’s Championship-winning campaign, scooping the club’s Young Player of the Year award in the process as she provided six goals in her 12 league appearances. The midfielder has also been capped for England at youth level, making appearances for the Young Lionesses’ Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides. “I’m delighted to be here,” she said. “It’s been a long process throughout the summer, but as soon as I found out Spurs were interested I was buzzing and couldn’t wait to get started.” CHELSEA FIRST IN WSL Robert Vilahamn’s side begin their WSL campaign away to Chelsea on 1 October, kicking off at 5.30pm at Stamford Bridge before a first home game against newly-promoted Bristol City – a 2pm kick-off at Brisbane Road. Meanwhile, we will face Bristol City, Southampton and Reading in Group D of the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup Group Stage. Full fixture details are yet to be announced. 4 4 UNDER-21S THFC UNDER — 21S UNDER — 21S DREAM START AT CITY Our Under-21s put on a scintillating away performance to beat defending champions Manchester City 5-0 in our Premier League 2 opener last Saturday. Yago Santiago finished off a flowing team move from defence to attack to give us the dream start inside the opening 10 minutes at City’s training ground. We denied the Citizens any time to play with an aggressive press from the outset, with Jude Soonsup-Bell taking full advantage of our pressure on their back line to double the lead on 12 minutes. As the rain came lashing down in the second half, we didn’t let conditions dampen our spirits as Damola Ajayi slotted in a composed finish two minutes after the restart before the superb Santiago doubled his tally in the 57th minute. The home side struggled to match our intensity throughout the contest with Rio Kyerematen completing the rout on 72 minutes. Substitute (not used): Maguire. IN IT TO WIN IT Our Under-21s have entered the Premier League Cup for the first time ever in 2023/24 and have been placed into Group E along with Bristol City, Peterborough United and Sunderland. The tournament sees the 32 participating teams from the Premier League 2 and Professional Development League divided into eight groups of four. Each team will play their three opponents at home and away (six matches in total), with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage of the competition in 2024. Our entry comes in addition to our participation in the EFL Trophy – where we’ve been placed into Southern Group D alongside Cambridge United, Colchester United and Peterborough United – and the newly-reformatted Premier League 2. Despite finishing in the bottom two on goal difference at the end of last term, a merger of the two Premier League 2 divisions over the summer means that we remain in the now-expanded top flight. There is now one division made up of the 26 clubs with Category One Academies – each team will play 20 regularseason matches either at home or away. Results will generate a table ranking the 26 teams, with the top 16 teams qualifying for a single elimination play-off towards the end of the season. THFC UNDER-21S 4 5 MIXED FORTUNES IN PRE-SEASON Our Under-21s did everything but score as our pre-season friendly at Enfield Town on 18 July ended goalless. Once again playing to a large crowd in the ever-popular annual summer fixture just a short trip from our Training Centre, we had the majority of the chances but found Town’s secondhalf goalkeeper Adi Connolly in inspired form. Then, on 29 July, we struggled to deal with Stevenage’s crosses into our box as the League One side secured a 4-0 pre-season win at the Lamex Stadium. In a gruelling test for our young charges against a senior EFL team, the Hertfordshire outfit scored twice either side of the interval through Nick Freeman (2), Carl Piergianni and an own goal to claim the win. CONTRACT LATEST Over the summer we said farewell to Development Squad players Jamie Bowden, Kallum Cesay, Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Roshaun Mathurin, Marqes Muir and Romaine Mundle following the conclusion of their contracts. Under-18s players Thomas Bloxham, Brandon Bryan-Waugh and Riley Owen also departed – we wish them all the best in the next stage of their careers. Elsewhere, we recently confirmed that Matthew Craig and Alfie Dorrington have signed new contracts with the Club that will run until 2026, while Nile John and Max Robson have signed new contracts until 2025. Dante Cassanova and Jaden Williams, meanwhile, have signed their first professional contracts with the Club. 4 6 UNDER-18S THFC OPENING DAY DISAPPOINTMENT The damage was done in the first half as our new-look Under-18 side suffered a 4-0 opening-day defeat at Aston Villa last Saturday. Skipper Rory Wilson led the way for the hosts with a hat-trick, adding to Charlie Pavey’s opener, with Wilson completing his treble at the start of the second period after we’d found ourselves three goals down at half-time. We memorably ended last season’s Under-18 campaign away at Villa with Premier League Cup final glory, but this meeting in the league was a long way away from that as the new term got underway against the same opponents with a vastly different line-up and display. We were noticeably better in the second half, but were flagged offside numerous times over the course of the game as we struggled to make an impact in the final third. Spurs: Krasniqi, Black, Logan, Rowswell (Arganese-McDermott 79), Morgan (King 63), Willhoft-King, Akhamrich (Lehane 46), Olusesi, Irow (Adekunle 79), Hall (c), Moore. Substitute (not used): Bloedorn. He told us at Bodymoor Heath: “Obviously it’s really disappointing result-wise and also performance-wise. We needed to be a lot more decisive and add some end product to our game and also behind the ball, we were too open at times, so it was a disappointing start to the season and it leaves us with a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. “From the first whistle in the second half there was an intensity to our play which we always demand, but you want that at 0-0, not 3-0 down. Then the fourth goal, they scored against the run of play and that was pivotal in the end result so there’s lots of things to assess and work hard towards on the training pitch in the weeks ahead.” PLAYER LATEST Over the summer, we formally welcomed 11 young players into our Under-18s squad as full-time, first-year scholars. Samual Archer and Charlie Warren are the goalkeepers in this year’s intake, joined by defenders Timileyin Adekunle, Theodore Adelusi, Roman Egan-Riley, Calum Logan and Dante Orr. Further up the pitch, Herbie James, Callum Olusesi and Mikey Moore are the midfielders in the group, along with centre-forward Ellis Lehane. There was further good news recently with second-year players Archie Chaplin and Oliver Irow signing their first professional contracts with the Club. SIMON TAKES CHARGE We recently announced that Simon Davies has been appointed as Academy Director. Simon, who was captain of the famous 1992 youth team at Manchester United, has vast experience of the Academy system having begun his coaching career as a youth coach at Chester City before joining Manchester City’s Academy in 2010. He worked across different levels of the Academy during an eight-year period in Manchester, including the Under-23s where he worked alongside Patrick Vieira before taking over the position as Lead Coach himself, and subsequently Head of Coaching for the Academy. Simon left City in the summer of 2019 to join Belgian side RSC Anderlecht where he held the position of Assistant Coach to Vincent Kompany, before joining us as Head of Methodology for the Academy in July, 2022. Earlier in the summer, we announced that Dean Rastrick had decided to step away from his role as Academy Manager in order to pursue new challenges and opportunities. Dean joined us in 2010, initially as Academy Performance Manager, before being appointed as the Club’s Academy Manager in July, 2017. Dean left the Club with our thanks for his dedication, expertise and with our best wishes. THFC T H E D A LY C O L U M N 4 9 ping away. But now, the player many expected to see appears to be stepping forward. Perhaps it’s no surprise – the murmurings were there during pre-season. His performances in training and matches were extremely positive. Bissouma is very popular amongst the rest of the squad. Ange Postecoglou has already earmarked him as an important player. It’s a cliché, but he almost seems like a new signing – especially having swapped to the number 8 shirt this season. His post-match comments from the Brentford game, suggest the mentality is there too. “If I’m man of the match and we didn’t win, the game for me is not a success.” That’ll be music to the ears of the new head coach. fter the opening game of the season, there was delight amongst Spurs fans about James Maddison’s classy first competitive appearance – coupled with his involvement in both goals. Destiny Udogie’s ability was also picked out by many on his Premier League debut. The manner with which the 20-year-old took on his full-backand-midfield role was a joy to watch. But no one could walk away from the 2-2 draw against Brentford without mentioning the name of Yves Bissouma. He was sensational – a 90-minute reminder of the Mali international’s undeniable Premier League quality, at a time when £100m+ midfielders have become a thing. Bissouma’s skill, dribbling and ability to hold on to the ball under extreme pressure couldn’t help but remind me of Mousa Dembele. At both ends of the pitch, the 26-year-old was near flawless. The stats back it up, showing impressive numbers for tackles, interceptions and dribbles. One mesmeric piece of trickery on the edge of his own box saw him get around two Brentford players to start a counter-attack. His passes, more than any other player on the pitch, were mostly played forward and with a purpose – to break the lines. Maddison was one of the particular beneficiaries of Bissouma’s bravery on the ball. He was named the Premier League Player of the Match – and it was almost certainly his best performance in a Spurs shirt. But that also speaks to the difficulties he faced in a first season in north London. His signing more than 12 months ago brought great excitement. Fans knew him already – Bissouma impressed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2021/22 season, in a 3-1 FA Cup win for his former side Brighton. But when he arrived in summer 2022, he came up against the Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg axis that had become so pivotal under Antonio Conte. When he did get a chance before the World Cup, it was mainly in a 3-5-2 rather than the regular 3-4-3 – with the other two midfielders afforded the freedom to make things happen further up the pitch. Then, in February, he suffered a stress fracture to his left ankle that required surgery having only made nine starts for the club. By the time Bissouma returned from three months out, Conte was gone and the chances of European qualification were slipAnother installment of SPURSPLAY ROB DALY’s regular column, as he analyses our opener at Brentford with an emphasis on a certain midfielder… W O R D S B Y R O B D A LY A YVES BISSOUMA WAS EXEMPLARY AGAINST BRENTFORD Proper off-road capability.
