THFC NEWS 5 1 David Howells was in fine form during a busy summer of action for the Spurs Legends side. The 1991 FA Cup-winning midfielder embarked on a consistent run of goalscoring performances for the team of ex-Spurs professionals, most recently netting from the penalty spot in a 9-6 win over charity side Waitrose 270 FC at Maidstone United in Kent on 9 July. Prior to that, he played a starring role against two of our Official Supporters’ Clubs in the north of the country as the team took on North West Spurs (25 June) and Yorkshire Spurs (2 July) in high-profile charity matches that raised thousands of pounds for the JE3 Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK respectively. Club Ambassador Michael Dawson was in attendance for both games as first the team defeated North West Spurs 4-2 at Hyde United, before recording a 10-0 victory over Yorkshire Spurs at Tadcaster Albion. Howells was on target in the latter game, joined on the scoresheet by the likes of Pascal Chimbonda and Paul McVeigh with a hat-trick. Former midfielder Darren Caskey was also back in action against Yorkshire Spurs, while Stephen Clemence was in attendance for the North West Spurs fixture, along with women’s first team star Ashley Neville as a special guest. Club mascots Chirpy and Lily even made the trip, the former visiting Yorkshire Spurs with the latter at North West Spurs as both fan groups, who took part in a joint training session at Hotspur Way under the watchful eye of Ledley King earlier in the summer in preparation for the games, did the club proud with the way they hosted the fixtures. The 2023 season didn’t start off quite as well for the Legends, though – after a heavy 7-2 defeat to a charity side in their opening game of the year at Aveley in Essex on 23 April, they went down 6-3 to Houghton & Wyton Vets at St Ives Town FC in Cambridgeshire on 4 June. Howells was again on the scoresheet, rifling a thunderbolt past Houghton & Wyton goalkeeper Paul Miles from distance to get the Legends off the mark, but the hosts secured victory in the end. Players in action over the course of the Legends’ fixtures this year have included regulars Mark Falco, Tony Galvin, Stuart Nethercott, Brian Statham, Kevin Watson, David Kerslake, Jeff Minton and goalkeeper Jimmy Walker, along with Johnnie Jackson, who made his debut at Aveley. Up next, the Legends team will be turning out at Trinity Playing Fields in Ware on Sunday 3 September (2pm) as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Ware Youth FC, before heading to Westfield FC in Woking on Sunday 10 September (1pm) to take on a Westfield Select XI. 5 2 WELCOME TO SPURS THFC MICKY VAN DE VEN Dutch international Micky van de Ven joined us on 8 August after putting pen to paper on a contract that will run until 2029. The defender signed for us from German side VfL Wolfsburg, was handed the number 37 shirt and made his debut in our colours away at Brentford last weekend. Born in Wormer, Netherlands, Micky spent his early years locally with WSV ‘30 Wormer, before joining FC Volendam’s youth team in July, 2013, progressing through the ranks to make a total of 48 senior appearances, scoring twice. An athletic centre-back, the 22-yearold earned a move to Vfl Wolfsburg in August, 2021, and made 41 appearances for the Bundesliga side in all competitions, scoring once and registering three assists. At international level, Micky has featured 11 times for the Netherlands’ Under-21 side, featuring in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship earlier this year. He was also named in the preliminary squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Tall and commanding at 6ft 4ins, he describes himself as ‘calm on the ball’, but it’s his sheer pace that has caught the eye of many. “I’m a centre-back, a tall guy, I think I have some speed, so I can play in a high line, offensive football, between the lines. I think I’m quite calm on the ball and hopefully I can help the team,” he said of his own style and, asked how he expects the Premier League to differ from Holland and Germany, added: “Every player will be top, so I have to be ready for this stage, and I’m really proud I can play on this stage. To play every time against a top club, and playing for a top club, for me, it’s an incredible feeling to be in the Premier League.” “I know Spurs is a beautiful club, an amazing club, a top club in the Premier League. Every time I see a player sign for Spurs, I think, ‘wow, it would be amazing to sign for an amazing club like that’. I’m so excited to be part of the future of Spurs.” ALEJO VELIZ We also announced the signing of Alejo Veliz on 8 August, who joined us from Rosario Central. The Argentine centre-forward has agreed a deal with the Club that will run until 2029, and he will wear the number 36 shirt. Born in Gödeken, Argentina, Alejo joined Rosario at Under-20 level and progressed to make his first team debut in July, 2021. The 19-year-old attacker made a total of 62 appearances for the Primera Division side in all competitions, scoring 19 times including the winner in the Clásico Rosarino against Newell’s Old Boys in July last year. On the international stage, Alejo caught the eye for Argentina at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup when he scored in all three of Argentina’s group games, only for the hosts to go out to Nigeria Over the last couple of weeks, we announced the signings of three more new players to join our first team squad, following the earlier arrivals of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon. Let’s find out more about the new faces… W E L C O M E TH02_52-53_New_Signings.indd 52 16/08/2023 12:11
THFC WELCOME TO SPURS 5 3 in the Round of 16. He’s now starting a new chapter on and off the pitch and is following in the footsteps of the likes of Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa and Erik Lamela, while he has been greeted at Spurs by compatriots and World Cup winners, Gio Lo Celso and Cuti Romero. “When the opportunity came for me to come here, I had no doubts whatsoever,” explained Alejo. “I chatted with my family about it, and they were 100 per cent with me on my decision. Potentially, it might be a little bit tough to settle into life over here, but I’m fortunate to have Gio and one or two of the lads here at the club who have already reassured me that all will be fine and who will be here alongside me offering their help and support for whatever I may need. “I’m coming here with a huge desire to do well. I’m totally fulfilling a dream, coming here to such a massive club. I will do my level best to grab my opportunity and hopefully everything will go as well as it possibly can for me here.” ASHLEY PHILLIPS Another youngster joining us earlier this month is Ashley Phillips, who moved from Blackburn Rovers and has signed a deal that will run until 2028. The 18-year-old centre-half started his youth career at National League North side Curzon Ashton before joining Blackburn at the age of 12 in 2017. The defender quickly progressed through the Rovers academy, featuring regularly for the Under-18s aged just 15 and making his Under-23s debut the following season. In 2021/22, he went on to make 11 appearances in Premier League 2 and spent most of the campaign training with the first team squad, making the bench for their FA Cup Third Round tie at Wigan Athletic in January, 2022. Ashley’s first team debut came in a Carabao Cup Fourth Round win over Hartlepool United in August, 2022 – becoming the fourth youngest player in Blackburn’s history at 17 years and 45 days – and made his Championship debut against West Bromwich Albion a few days later. He went on to make eight first team appearances in the league and a further six in cup competitions last term, with further recognition coming at the end of the 2022/23 season when he was awarded the LFE Championship Apprentice of the Season. On the international stage, Ashley has represented England at Under-17 and Under-19 level, captaining the Under-18s against Norway at the International Tournament of Lisbon in June, 2023. “It’s amazing to be here. It’s a really massive club,” Ashley said. “I’ve always dreamt of being in the Premier League and this is just the start for me. There are really good players, really good staff – I’ll learn so much – and there’s an exciting future here, so I’m really excited to get going. I can’t wait to get started!” TO SPURS! THFC NEWS 5 5 This month, the Club have been delighted to show our support for South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM), a time where we all get an opportunity to listen, learn and celebrate South Asian culture and its integration into British life. Each year, the period of celebration takes place between 18 July and 17 August and this year marks the 76th anniversary of partition and the independence of India from British rule. Eight countries make up South Asia which include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. SAHM has three core elements: • Celebrating the contribution of South Asians to the UK, from supporting to build Britain back following the end of the Second World War through to the present day. • Commemorating the important events in history (many of which still affect South Asians today. • Educating people about how the relationship between Britain and South Asia has shaped the world we live in and create a space to have important (sometimes uncomfortable) conversations about things that impact our communities. What is the theme for SAHM 2023? This year, SAHM is being celebrated for the third year, focusing on the theme of ‘Stories To Tell’. This theme encompasses many different aspects of South Asian identity, not only in Britain, but other communities across the diaspora who continue to share their stories. The stories can span from present day to pre-colonial times. Speaking about the month, Sash Patel – co-chair of Spurs REACH and THFC Fan Advisory Board member – said: “I’ve been coming to watch Spurs for the last 35 years. Walking up the High Road on a match day, you see people of all races, ethnicities and cultural heritage. Why wouldn’t you want to know more about your fellow Spurs fans. I’m proud to be British but also proud of my Indian heritage and having this month to amplify the impact South Asians have had to British culture is important as our stories matter.” Spurs REACH are the official Tottenham Hotspur Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage supporters’ association. They are a collective of Spurs fans who are keen to further expand the Club’s reach to existing and prospective new fans from diverse and under-represented ethnic backgrounds. If you would like to learn more about SAHM then please visit southasianheritage.org.uk/ where you will get access to a wealth of information, resources and events. THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus today, ERIC DIER… NAME: ERIC DIER AGE: 29 BORN: CHELTENHAM, ENGLAND LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ENGLISH, PORTUGUESE, SPANISH How and why did you learn your languages? “Obviously I learned English from the outset and then between the ages of eight and 13 I learned Portuguese. I was living in Portugal at the time, attending a local school, around Portuguese friends and I think if you’re in an environment like that – even more so when you’re playing football or doing any kind of activity in a group setting – it’s easier to pick it up. It’s a difficult language to learn but in that kind of scenario and also when you’re young, I think it’s easier. “Imagine you need to say ‘I want, he wants, they want, she wants, we want’… in Portuguese, every single time the word ‘want’ is different. Everything is masculine or feminine or plural or not plural and the word changes depending on that. “I speak Spanish as well – it’s quite similar to Portuguese so I just learned from being around my South American and Spanish team-mates. In Portugal I had some Argentinian team-mates, Marcos Rojo and some others at Sporting, so I was around a lot of Spanish speakers already but when I came here to Spurs I would say I really became confident in speaking Spanish because I was with people like Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Federico Fazio, Fernando Llorente and Davinson Sanchez. As I said, Portuguese and Spanish are very similar, especially Argentinian Spanish because of the accent, so really just being around those players helped me to learn.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “I’d like to learn Italian or French next. I think my understanding of French is already very good – I can’t speak it well, maybe the bare minimum, but my understanding of it is quite good.” How does Portuguese differ from Watch your language STADIUM: ESTÁDIO SOUTH STAND: ARQUIBANCADA SUL CENTRE CIRCLE: CÍRCULO CENTRAL PENALTY BOX: GRANDE ÁREA DUGOUT: BANCO DE RESERVAS DEFENDER: DEFENSOR HEADER: CABEÇADA HIT THE POST: ACERTAR A TRAVE FOOTBALL PHRASES IN PORTUGUESE ERIC IN ACTION IN PORTUGAL English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “It differs a lot! There’s different slang and it doesn’t translate well to English. In a game, for example, you wouldn’t say ‘man on’ when an opponent is approaching you to try to win the ball – you just wouldn’t say something like that. “You’d say ‘cuidado’, which is like ‘be careful’. You would never say ‘be careful’ in that situation in English, but that’s the kind of thing you’d say for ‘man on’. None of it really translates to English, apart from ‘gol’!” WITH ERIC DIER Add great taste to great games Download the Coca-Cola app: TH02_58-59_Watch_Your_Language.indd 59 16/08/2023 15:41

Let me think about that… I would say maybe ‘Inner self journey’ because I think at this age, 23, you’re a grown-up for sure, things like family and kids come into your mind, all of these things, so I think at 23 you really decide who you want to be in this world and what you want to do. WHAT WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN? I would love to be better at basketball! You never know what will happen in the future, but I love playing basketball and I’m a little bit sad that I didn’t play it when I was younger because I think it’s an amazing sport. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE TV SHOW? I like a lot…I always find something good on television. The other day it was the movie ‘Shark’ – I was just happy to see that because when I was young I always watched it. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FLAVOUR ICE CREAM? Pistachio – I love Italian ice cream, for sure. WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? It has to be playing football when it’s not going as it should be. Not winning games – this frustrates me most in the whole world. WHEN WHEN DID YOU LAST COOK SOMETHING AND WHAT WAS IT? I cook every day! Step-by-step I get better. The other day I wanted cheese quesadillas – I don’t know why my girlfriend laughed at me when I said cheese quesadillas – but I made that with sweet potato in the oven. It was 10 out of 10! WHEN DO YOU WAKE UP ON YOUR DAY OFF? Usually I try to sleep a lot – there’s nothing better. Always my dog wakes me up in the morning but I try to sleep as much as I can, at least until nine or 10 o’clock. WHEN DID YOU LAST GO TO THE CINEMA? I try to go quite often. I think it’s very nice, so as soon as there is a movie that I’d like to watch, I go straight away. WHEN DID YOU LAST GO TO A FANCY DRESS PARTY? You know, I have never been to one of those! It’s a little bit sad but I never have done. A FUTURE CAREER IN BASKETBALL? TH02_68-71_Getting_To_Know.indd 71 16/08/2023 15:08

Our doors are open to players of all interests and abilities, offering specialised girls-only sessions in addition to our mixed programmes. Our technical development syllabus encompasses a wide range of themes, including: • Spurs DNA • 1 v 1 Domination for both offense and defence • Brilliant Basics and Ball Mastery • Exploiting Overloads • Goalscoring and Finishing These key elements form the foundation of our player-focused approach, designed to equip participants with essential skills to thrive on the pitch. Through our programmes, players cultivate self-confidence, composure under pressure and a determination to succeed. Physical literacy is emphasised, with a focus on fundamental movement skills such as agility, balance, coordination and speed. Our scheduling accommodates players’ needs with Evening Player Development Programmes during school term-time, comprising five to seven weeks of one-hour sessions between 5pm and 8pm. 8 0 M Y FAVO U R I T E . . . THFC TH02_80-81_My_Favourite.indd 80 16/08/2023 15:09
THFC M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 WITH JAMES MADDISONmy favourite... A new feature for the new season, as we ask our supporters about some of their favourite memories of following Spurs. MY FAVOURITE GAME: For me, it’s the first game I saw Spurs play in Ireland v Shels on 9 August, 1994. As a young Spurs fan, seeing the team live for the first time will live long in the memory for me, but what also makes it stand out is that I snuck into the Shelbourne hotel and ended up meeting the whole team. One other that I want to mention is the first game I brought my son Ryan to at the old White Hart Lane when he was just three years old. It was against Charlton and to see the smile on his face when he met Chirpy for the first time was joyous. Now, 21 years on, we both still attend games together. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER: I have had many down the years but one that stands out to me is Micky Hazard. When discussing their favourite player, a lot of people talk about what they saw on the pitch but I look at the player on and off the pitch. Micky was a gifted footballer and also a genuine Spurs fan and the amount of times I see him help other Spurs fans really makes him stand out as one of our own and a special person in the heart of all Spurs fans. MY FAVOURITE GOAL Lucas Moura’s hat-trick goal v Ajax is my pick. I was away with work for that game up in Kilkenny and it was the first game I did not watch with Ryan, Kilkenny being a strong hurling county so I found it hard to find a pub that was showing the game with the sound on! After finally finding NAME: PADDY HARTNETT AGE: 46 one, I can remember phoning Ryan at half time and saying we are going to win. When that goal went in I was hugging, kissing and dancing with people that I’d never met in my life and calling Ryan and crying down the phone with joy. The emotions that goal gave fans will live long in the memory. FAVOURITE SPURS KIT: I love the plain white kits but my favourite is the 2002 home shirt. When Ryan was born I bought the only Spurs jersey in our local sports shop – the 2002 home shirt in large – so I could lay it over Ryan in the cot. Eighteen years on, Ryan and I went to a Ledley King event in Ireland and it was arranged that Ryan would be called up on stage and Ledley would present that very same jersey I laid over him and sign it, with over 300 Spurs fans wishing him happy birthday! FAVOURITE AWAY DAY: The only away game I attended was at Anfield on a trip with a team I played for when I was 15 or 16. I was the only Spurs fan in a squad full of Liverpool fans and I was warned not to jump up if Spurs scored. Spurs went 1-0 up and me being young, I celebrated. When Liverpool equalised I had loads of their fans pointing and singing at me, same again when Liverpool scored the winner but it was all in good jest! Want to feature on this page?
