opened his goalscoring account in our colours in some style. We didn’t get the result we wanted on
the night, but this was one of our goals of the season so far!

GLOBAL FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT

INTRODUCING OUR NEW
TECHNICAL SUPPORT SERIES

Over the coming weeks, Ryan Hall, Global Football Development Head Coach and
Academy coach, will be taking you through our new technical support series. Each
week Ryan will be setting fresh new challenges for you to complete and continue your
development at home.

In this first instalment of the series, we are starting withTechnical DNA 1 with a focus
on dribbling and turning. This will help develop your ability to manipulate the ball and
move in different directions effectively. Read through the three challenges below and
give them a go at home!

CHALLENGE 1
Set up: two markers, 10 yards apart
Activity: Dribble from the START marker to the top marker, turn and
dribble back. Complete as many as you can in 30 seconds.
Tip: Try dribbling with 1) Laces only 2) Instep, outstep 3) Outstep, instep,
change foot
Key points:
• Every time your kicking foot moves touch the ball
• Pump your arms like you are running
• Alternate dribbling foot after each turn (work right foot up, left foot

down)
CHALLENGE 2
Set up: four markers to create a 10 yard x 10 yard square
Activity: Dribble from the START marker to the top marker, turn and
dribble diagonally towards the opposite corner. Repeat to return to where
you started. Complete as many as you can in 60 seconds.
Tip: Try turning with an Inside Chop, Outside Chop and Cruyff Turn
Key points:
• Decelerate into the turn, accelerate out
• Turning distance of one-two yards
• Use your arms to add disguise to the turns
CHALLENGE 3
Set up: four markers to create a 10 yard x 10 yard square, add a marker to
the middle of the square (so it looks like a five on a dice)
Activity: Dribble from the START marker to the top marker, turn and
dribble diagonally towards the opposite corner, add two consecutive turns
at the middle marker and continue to the opposite corner. Repeat to return
to where you started. Complete as many as you can in 60 seconds.
Tip: Experiment with the different dribbling and turning techniques used
in Challenge 1 and 2
Key points:
• Practice keeping the ball safe side – position your body between the ball

and the markers, this will be a defender in a match situation

We hope you enjoy completing these challenges at home, keep an eye on Club channels for more on
our virtual technical support series. Ryan will be back next time with the second instalment:

THROUGH THE LENS

DAWS
SPARKS
FIREWORKS

All eyes are on the ball as a glancing
header from Michael Dawson (far
right) evades the dive of Chelsea
goalkeeper Henrique Hilario to level
the scores at White Hart Lane on
Bonfire Night in 2006.

It was a crucial goal too, coming 10
minutes after Claude Makelele’s fine
15th minute opener and giving us
renewed belief that we could finally
end Chelsea’s jinx over us.

We hadn’t won a league game
against the Blues since 1990 and
never in the Premier League at that
point, but all that changed when Aaron
Lennon latched onto Robbie Keane’s
deflected cross seven minutes after
half-time, cut inside Ashley Cole and
hit a left-foot shot past Hilario to give
us the lead in this clash.

After so many missed opportunities
in the past, this time we held on to
finally record that victory and end 16
years of hurt. It felt like a significant
moment at the time and so it proved,
as we’ve only lost three times at home
to the Blues in the 14 years since this
match.

It was a big moment for Daws too, as
it was his first goal for the Club since
signing from Nottingham Forest just
under two years earlier. He went on
to net 10 times in 324 appearances in
our colours – but this was the one he
enjoyed the most!
