THFC WHAT’S
UP, DOC?
MATT DOHERTY has been enjoying
his opportunities thus far under
Antonio Conte. Now, with a trimmed
down squad as well as his hard work
on and off the field, Matt is hoping
he can continue to deliver for
the Italian and show his best in a
Spurs shirt.
By Liam Carson
I t has been a bright few weeks for Matt
Doherty in a Spurs shirt.
Having endured what he termed as a ‘tough
start’ to life in north London following his summer
2020 move from today’s opponents Wolves, Matt
has started to make his mark in our colours since
the arrival of Antonio Conte.
In and out of the side under Jose Mourinho
during the 2020/21 campaign before being offered
limited game time under Nuno Espirito Santo, the
Irishman has enjoyed many more regular outings
following Antonio’s appointment as our Head
Coach in November.
Appearing in 11 of the Italian’s first 17
matches in charge, while he didn’t always play
in his preferred position of right wing-back, the
defender was always available for the team,
showing his dependability and versatility as he
deputised in a number of roles across our XI.
However, despite things starting to move in the
right direction for him in N17, Matt still believes
there is much more to be done in order for him to
return to the sort of level that he demonstrated in
the colours of this afternoon’s visitors.
Helping Wolves return to the Premier League
in 2018, our number two was regarded as one
of the most creative full-backs in England over
the next two seasons with an incredible 30 goal
involvements in all competitions.

Matt Doherty THFC
One of Matt’s brightest performances for us
so far under Antonio was his second-half substi-
tute appearance in our 3-2 win at Leicester last
month where he came off the bench to help us to
turn the game on its head.
Coming on for Emerson Royal at half-time
to play right-wing back for the first time in his
Spurs career, the defender went on to cause
chaos for the Foxes in their 18-yard box and
it was his well-timed run in the fifth minute of
injury time that brought about Steven Bergwijn’s
equaliser. The Dutchman then dramatically won
the game with another strike just 79 seconds
later.
“AT THE END
OF THE DAY,
WE’RE TRYING
TO SCORE
GOALS, SO WHY
NOT ATTACK
THE BOX?”
Being able to create carnage in the opposi-
tion’s box, Doc holds a quite particular attacking
ability. However, this is not something that
can be taught. It is, instead, instinctive and an
offensive threat that could only be channelled
by someone who understands the defensive
psyche.
“I just know from going up against other
players what I don’t like facing as a defender,”
he explained of his attacking play. “You don’t like
it when players are constantly running off the
back of you, doing one-twos, getting in the box
because, you know what it’s like, you can’t touch
people in the box - you could give away a penalty
which will probably be a goal.
“I just try to do things that I know will make
the defender uncomfortable and just to attack
that goal. At the end of the day, we’re trying to
score goals, not win corners or throw-ins. We
want to score goals, so why not attack the box?”
Following the closure of the January transfer
window, it is noticeable that, while we did bring
in two new faces in Rodrigo Bentancur and
Dejan Kulusevski, our squad has been trimmed
down – and that is something Matt sees as a real
positive for the rest of the season.
Last month, our first team saw Bryan Gil,
Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Jack
20
THFC Matt Doherty
Clarke all head out on loan while Dele departed
permanently – moves which have cut down our
squad and will certainly offer players across the
pitch more minutes. It is something from which
our Irish defender hopes he will benefit from an
individual perspective but, highlighting his time
at Wolves, he also feels a tighter-knit group will
also be a big plus for us as we move towards the
business end of the campaign.
“I definitely think it will help,” he said. “I
had it at Wolves where you have a trimmed
down squad. You kind of feel like you’re always
involved. Even if you are on the bench, you feel
like you have a chance to come on.
“Everybody is also bit closer together and
it is a good feeling knowing that you’re either
going to be on the bench or you’re going to play
every week. You’re not worried about being in
the stands or whatever. I think it brings everyone
closer together and it also keeps you focussed
and concentrated on the fact that you’ve got a
chance of playing.”
“I THINK ANY
PLAYER – WHEN
THEY’RE GOING
UP AGAINST
THEIR OLD
TEAM – LOOKS
FORWARD TO
PLAYING IN
THAT GAME”
And Matt will be hoping he gets the nod to
play this afternoon as we take on Wolves - a side
he represented for an entire decade.
“I think any player - when they’re going up
against their old team - looks forward to playing
in that game,” he admitted. “I know I went back
there last season but there was no crowd, and I
didn’t play in either of the games we played at
Molineux this season. I’m looking forward to this
game though.
“I know quite a few of the players from my
time there are still there, as well as staff and
that. Once the game starts though, your profes-
sional head is on and you can speak to your
friends after the game, but obviously I’ll always
have fond memories of those 10 years at Wolves.”
