MY FIRST GAME
Spurs 1 Wolves 1
In every matchday programme this season, we’re inviting our fans to
reminisce about their first-ever Spurs game to refresh the memories
of those momentous occasions! If you’d like to appear in this feature,
drop us an email to [email protected] with a few
details of the first time you saw the mighty Spurs play!

saw Spurs make the perfect start A WINNER AGAINST WOLVES
when Bobby Smith hammered home
a brilliant opening goal after just nine
minutes. In the build up to the goal,
Wolves half-back Bill Slater injured
his ribs and had to go off to get them
strapped up. When he returned, all
he could do was walk slowly up and
down the touchline in pain, effectively
leaving the visitors with just 10 men.
With a goal up and a man advan-
tage, it was expected that we would
romp to another home win, but it never
materialised. Instead, back came
Wolves when Danny Blanchflower
was uncharacteristically careless in
possession in the 22nd minute and his
attempted pass went to Ted Farmer,
who beat Bill Brown for the equaliser.
Farmer had the ball in the net again
four minutes later but the referee
ruled he had punched it past Brown.
There was plenty of time left in
the game but try as we might, we
couldn’t find a way through the Wolves
backline again. John White hit the bar,
Smith headed just over and Les Allen
missed a great chance, but the winner
never came and we had to settle for
another dropped point.
We lost another couple of matches
after this one, however we found our

Steve Perryman looks like he’s not getting the
better of this incident when we played Wolves
here in 1982, but he and his team-mates certainly
had the last laugh as we ran out 6-1 victors on the
day.
The First Division fixture was played on
6 February 40 years ago, on the day that we officially
opened our brand new West Stand at White Hart
Lane, and we marked the occasion with a superb
performance.
Glenn Hoddle set us on the way when he
converted a penalty after 10 minutes and on the half
hour mark, Ricky Villa hit a magnificent swerving
right-foot shot to double our lead before Kenny
Hibbitt cracked home a free-kick to pull one back
for the visitors.
After the break Villa headed home Tony Galvin’s
cross to make it 3-1 and then completed his hat-trick
with a close-range finish after good work from Garth
Crooks.
Skipper Perryman – pictured here being tackled
by Wolves’ Mel Eves and Colin Brazier – then set up
our final two goals with crosses from the right, the
first met by a powerful header from Crooks with
Mark Falco getting on the end of another cross to
head home our sixth goal.

HOME AND AWAY Getting the lowdown
from our players on
venues which feature
prominently in their
careers. Today, RYAN
SESSEGNON answers
our questions…
BIGGEST
STADIUM
PLAYED AT
I’ve played at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena but I
think Wembley is bigger. The first time I played there
was the Championship play-off final with Fulham
against Aston Villa in May 2018, a full house, a big
game and a great atmosphere.
INTERNATIONAL
DEBUT GROUND
My first game for the England Under-21s was at
Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane when we played
Ukraine (March 2018). It’s a decent stadium and I
had fond memories of playing there already as I
scored my first hat-trick for Fulham there in a
5-4 win!
DEBUT
GROUND
I made my professional debut for
Fulham at Leyton Orient in a League
Cup tie in August 2016. It’s quite a nice
little stadium, it wasn’t too far for us
to travel and was a great occasion for
me of course. There were two or three
of us from the Academy that made
our debuts in that game which made it
even more special – and we won.

Home And Away HOME AND AWAY
MOST
DIFFICULT
AWAY
STADIUM
For me I’d say Chelsea, I’ve played there
three times now and haven’t won. The fans
really get behind them and when they get a
goal ahead, the momentum builds and it’s
really difficult for away teams to get into
the game.
FAVOURITE
AWAY
GROUND
I quite like Elland Road actually. I’ve only
played there twice and the first time was
my league debut for Fulham. I remember
the fans being really passionate, the
atmosphere was very good and they
tried to make it difficult for us.
VENUE
OF MOST
IMPORTANT
GAME
I’d have to go back to Wembley again because at
that moment, that play-off game against Aston
Villa was the most important of my career. I’ve
had many important games since but in terms of
the magnitude of that match, that was the biggest
and to win it was such a special occasion.
