6 ANGE POSTECOGLOU THFC
THFC ANGE POSTECOGLOU 7 “Sonny is an outstanding leader and an example to those around him every day” want to start these notes by congratulating Sonny on his 400th appearance for the Club, which came on Tuesday at West Ham. It’s an incredible milestone and a one-club longevity that is rare in the modern game. Sonny is an outstanding leader and an example to those around him every day. On the pitch, when you have achieved what he has it can be easy to become comfortable. However, he strives for the highest possible standards and shows drive and consistency day in, day out. And off the pitch, if won’t come as a surprise to anyone to know that Sonny is a brilliant human being, with such humility, professionalism and a smile that reminds us all that there’s so much to be thankful for in this profession. He’s already created a fantastic legacy at the Club and will continue to be a brilliant player for Tottenham Hotspur for many years to come. This afternoon we face Nottingham Forest and I should like to welcome Nuno Espirito Santo, his staff, players and everyone associated with the Reds. At this stage of the season there is so much to play for at every end of the table, every game has something riding on it, and Forest showed their quality in midweek with an impressive victory over Fulham, so we know we need to be at I our best. We go into today’s game on the back of two tough fixtures in the space of four days – here against Luton and away at West Ham. Against Luton, I was pleased with our performance. We had plenty of chances and controlled the game pretty much from start to finish. Even when we fell behind, the players stayed calm, kept playing our football and eventually got our rewards. On Tuesday at the London Stadium, I thought we controlled the game pretty well for the most part and dealt well with West Ham’s threat on the counter-attack. There was plenty to be positive about as we got in some good areas on a number of occasions, our general play was good and we showed maturity. We have eight games of the season remaining, four of which are here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it’s been a pleasure to play in front of you this season. We’re developing and progressing as a team and I’m delighted with the players’ continued willingness to learn and improve. Results are the ultimate measure, however when I look at us I know we are a group of players which is heading in the right direction. We want to finish the season strongly to see where it takes us.
8 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC
THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 9 Only 10 players have ever worn our number 17 shirt since the introduction of squad numbers in English football 30 years ago this season – and one name stands well clear at the top of the list of appearances in the jersey. French midfielder Moussa Sissoko was already vastly experienced from lengthy spells with Toulouse and Newcastle United when he joined us in August 2016, immediately taking over the No 17 shirt which he would go on to wear throughout his Spurs career. His arrival to N17 was no doubt accelerated following a superb performance in his last game for the Magpies, when he dominated midfield as they inflicted a heavy 5-1 defeat on Mauricio Pochettino’s side on the final day of the 2015/16 season! Sissoko first donned our No 17 shirt for the closing stages of our 4-0 win at Stoke City on 10 September 2016 and featured 34 times that season – although only made four starts in the Premier League. An energetic powerhouse in midfield, with the ability to transition from defence into attack in a flash with his ball carrying skills, he scored his first goal for us in a 4-0 win at Huddersfield Town in September 2017, but it was in his third season at Spurs that he really came to the fore. Sissoko made 43 No.17 in that NUMBER As this season marks 30 years since the introduction of squad numbers in English football, we take a closer look at the names and numbers that have formed our matchday squads since 1993/94 – and even further back in our history. NO. 17s…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1 Moussa Sissoko 202 2 Andros Townsend 75 3 Oyvind Leonhardsen 72 4 Cristian Romero 60 5= John Scales 33 5= Giovani Dos Santos 33 7 Noe Pamarot 30 8 Kevin-Prince Boateng 21 9 Eidur Gudjohnsen 13 10 Andy Turner 2 appearances that term, playing a key role as we marched all the way to the Champions League Final, although it was his outstretched arm that the ball

A cult figure among our supporters, Sissoko featured 202 times in our colours and all of them with the No 17 on his back, before joining Watford ahead of the 2021/22 season. He currently plies his trade with Nantes. After breaking through from our Academy to play 18 times in the No 31 shirt, it was in the number 17 jersey that Andros Townsend really established himself as a first team player at Spurs. Taking over the shirt prior to the 2013/14 season, the flying winger scored in his first appearance as our No 17 when he netted in a Europa League tie against Dinamo Zagreb. He went on to feature 33 times that season and improved on that further in 2014/15, making 35 appearances including starting our League Cup Final defeat to Chelsea. In total, Townsend made 75 appearances in our No 17 shirt to sit second on our list, just three ahead of Norwegian midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen. The former Wimbledon and Liverpool player joined us in the summer of 1999 and made his debut as our No 17 in a 1-0 defeat at West Ham United in the August. He spent three years in north London, playing 72 times in our colours before a move to Aston Villa in August 2002. Our current No 17 is Cristian Romero, who made his 60th appearance in the jersey in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at West Ham. He initially started out as our No 4 and featured 30 times in that shirt in the 2021/22 season before switching at the start of last season. John Scales joined us from Liverpool in 1996 but had an injury-hit stay in north London. Allocated the No 17 shirt on arrival, the centre-half managed just 33 games in the jersey during his first three years with us. He wore No 19 on four occasions in 1999/2000 before moving to Ipswich Town. Mexican forward Giovani Dos Santos also wore our No 17 shirt on 33 occaIN OPPOSITION… Nottingham Forest have had quite a few players wear their No 17 shirts down the years, including popular former Spur, Michael Dawson. The centre-half featured in the jersey during the 2002/03 campaign, when he made his breakthrough into the Forest side. Some other familiar names feature on Forest’s list of No 17s including current Sheffield United striker Ben Brereton Diaz (2017/18), forward David McGoldrick (between 2009-13), midfielder James Perch (between 2005-07), Scottish international Kris Commons (2004/05) and Kingsley Black (between 1994- 96). Forest currently don’t have anyone occupying the No 17 jersey. For the previous three campaigns it was worn by winger Alex Mighten but he is on loan at Port Vale and the shirt has remained vacant this season. CRISTIAN ROMERO TOOK NUMBER 17 AT THE START OF LAST SEASON sions. Signed from Barcelona in June 2008, he never really hit the heights that were expected of him and spent much of his time on our books out on loan. Noe Pamarot spent 18 months with us between 2004-06 and was given the No 17 shirt following his arrival from French side Nice. A serious knee injury brought an end to his good start in N17 and he ended up making 30 appearances before joining Portsmouth in January 2006. Midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng was highly-rated when he joined us from Hertha Berlin at the age of 20, but unfortunately never settled and left us for Portsmouth in August 2009 having played 21 times in our No 17 shirt. Two more players complete the list of our No 17s – Eidur Gudjohnsen, w h o p l a y e d 1 3 t i m e s o n l o a n from Monaco for the second half of the 2009/10 campaign, and winger Andy Turner, the first player to ever wear No 17 for Spurs when he came off the bench on the opening day of the 1993/94 season, when we beat Newcastle United.
THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 1 1 It took a while before our No 28 shirt became a more familiar sight in team line-ups but, once it did, it has featured more prominently than one might expect. For the first six years after squad n u m b e r s we r e i n t r o d u c e d , t h e lesser-spotted No 28 was only seen on three occasions during Spurs matches! It’s first-ever appearance came in the penultimate match of the 1994/95 season when Northern Ireland midfielder Gerry McMahon wore it for his debut – a 3-1 home defeat to Coventry City. McMahon wore it again for the final game of the season before defender Jamie Clapham next donned the No 28 shirt, this time in the last match of 1996/97 – another home defeat to the Sky Blues! The jersey didn’t appear again until during 1999/2000 when Matthew Etherington featured in it. Joining us from Peterborough United in 1999, the winger would make 51 appearances in our colours – all in the No 28 shirt – before moving to West Ham United in 2003. Top of the list of appearances in the number 28 shirt is Kyle Walker, who surprisingly played a century of games in the jersey. More familiar for his time in N17 with the No 2 on his back, the rightback made his breakthrough with us in the 2011/12 season when still occupying No 28, the number he was allocated after joining us from Sheffield United. Only a handful of players have played 50 or more games in a single season for us during the Premier League era and Walker is one of them, racking up his half century in 2012/13 wearing No 28. Not far behind the England international is French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, who took over the No 28 shirt when he arrived from Lyon in July 2019 and has made 91 appearances in it. After two promising campaigns in north London, he has spent the last two-anda-half seasons on loan with Lyon, Napoli and, currently, Galatasaray. Academy graduate Tom Carroll had played 21 times for us wearing No 46 before he moved up the order to take on the No 28 shirt for the 2013/14 season. In total, he wore number 28 on 35 occasions with 30 of them coming during his best campaign in our colours in 2015/16. Former Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas spent his first year in north London wearing No 28. After joining from the Magpies, his debut came in a goalless draw against Liverpool at the Lane in September 2005 and he went on to No.28 NO. 28s…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1 Kyle Walker 100 2 Tanguy Ndombele 91 3 Matthew Etherington 51 4 Tom Carroll 35 5 Jermaine Jenas 32 6 Alan Hutton 15 7 Mark Yeates 4 8 Gerry McMahon 2 9 Kevin-Prince Boateng 1 10 Jamie Clapham 1 feature 32 times in the jersey in 2005/06 before establishing himself in our No 8 shirt. Scottish defender Alan Hutton was another player who featured in our No 28 shirt before moving up the squad list. He arrived from Rangers in January 2008 and in just his third appearance, helped us win the Carling Cup against Chelsea, with No 28 on his back. He made 15 appearances before taking on the No 2 jersey. Finally, young winger Mark Yeates came through our Academy to make four appearances as our No 28 between 2003-05, while Kevin Prince-Boateng – mentioned earlier in this feature as our No 17 – also wore the number 28 shirt on one occasion, our 5-1 Carling Cup win at Doncaster Rovers in August 2009.

THFC F R O M T H E VAU LT 1 7 AN INCLUSIVE ARCHIVE As part of our on-going archive work we are always looking to add, either temporarily or permanently, to the collection to help expand our knowledge of the objects which shape our past. One of the ways we do this is by collecting objects from recent and current seasons. Having just reached the end of Women’s History Month in March, in today’s programme we are looking at some objects which have come to us on loan from the Women’s Team which are soon to be added to the displays on the Stadium Tour. Pictured here are four objects – two shirts, a football and a captain’s armband; four standard items for a football collection, all of which can tell a story about our Women’s Team. The football is one from the historic north London derby earlier this season, where our Women’s Team beat Arsenal for the first time. The statistics from the match show that, whilst under a lot of pressure, having scored in the 59th minute, we saw the game out to record an historic victory. At one point, our rivals were so desperate for a goal, they had four strikers on at the same time. One of the players who really impacted the game, Jessica Naz, also has a shirt pictured here, although not the one from the Arsenal game. The other shirt pictured is that of goalkeeper Becky Spencer, who was in goal recently at another historic match, where we beat Manchester City to progress through to the semi-final of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time. Spencer saved two penalties in the process, keeping out spot-kicks from Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly. Finally, we have the rainbow captain’s armband from last season. This was worn by Shelina Zadorsky in the WSL match against Manchester City on 22 October 2022. A photo of Canadian international Zadorsky was used for a number of news articles surrounding the wearing of these armbands at both the men’s and women’s World Cups. Whilst they had been banned for the men’s tournament in Qatar in 2022, FIFA considered reversing this ban for the women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. In the end, FIFA decided against allowing the rainbow armband and instead offered eight alternative options for countries to choose from. As we continue to grow the archive, we hope to continue to expand the content related to the history of our Women’s Team. If you, or anyone you know, has things related to the Spurs Women’s team you would like to share images of with us, please get in touch! 1 8 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC
THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 1 9 LIVING THE DREAM uglielmo Vicario spent his entire life impelled by a dream: playing for Italy. This dedicated intent, for a goalkeeper whose career in his homeland began in the Italian fourth tier before joining Spurs, has now led him to one of the pinnacles of football. There are few honours greater in the game than representing your country and, on 24 March 2024, ‘Vic’ achieved this lifelong dream when he was selected to start in Italy’s international friendly with Ecuador at the home of the New York Red Bulls in New Jersey, USA. Having never appeared for his country at any level before, the 27-year-old, who received his first international call-up back in September 2022, proudly adorned the Azzurri crest on his chest for the very first time and would have felt like he was flying with wings in the Red Bull Arena. For a player who hashtags ‘Living The Dream’ on his social media, it marked a landmark moment for our summer signing from Empoli who made a positive impact on his debut between the sticks for his nation, keeping a clean sheet as Luciano Spaletti’s side ran out 2-0 winners. When reflecting on his achievement, the goalkeeper speaks of his enormous pride at realising his enduring ambition but, such is his grounded and humble nature, was quick to use a mythological reference to emphasise he won’t get carried away and will not stop striving to improve. “It’s a big honour,” said our number 13. “It’s a lifelong dream I’ve had since I was a kid. “I’ve always wanted to represent my country, to represent my family and friends and everyone who lives in Italy but also for Italians who live abroad like me. “It fills me with huge pride to have made my debut, it was a big target in my sporting life, so I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved but now my objective is to improve day after day, without setting limits and without flying too close to the sun either. I try to experience the present and expect the maximum from myself.” Icarus, in Greek mythology, was a character whose fate was met by flying too close to the sun with waxen wings. His tale was written as a cautionary one, particularly for the transition from WORDS BY WILL HOLDERNESS Exclusive interview with our popular goalkeeper GUGLIELMO VICARIO, whose impressive performances in his first season in English football recently led to a dream fulfilled… G “To look up in the stands at the stadium and see the fans celebrating is one of the best feelings”
2 0 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC
THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 1 adolescence to adulthood, but Vic is a wise head on young shoulders which has also been apparent from an early age. When pursuing his football career as an 18-year-old, he made the brave decision to leave the comfort of home and Serie A side Udinese’s academy to join a senior semi-professional outfit Fontanafredda in their first campaign in Serie D. In a country famous for its sculptors, the goalkeeper then carved his own path with spells at Venezia, Cagliari, Perugia and Empoli as he worked his way up from the fourth division of Italian football to the top. These were pursuits that, outside of the traditional pathway, have helped him remain hungry and modest as well as develop a steely character. So, when it came to persuading Guglielmo to join us in the summer, Ange Postecoglou even referenced the pair’s kindred journeys to reach the elite level of the game. Not that he took much convincing! “It was a very good call because he knew everything about me, my past, style of play and my character,” Vic explained. “The gaffer was the main man. He told me it’s a very important thing that both of us started from the bottom and have had to overcome hurdles in our careers and lives. He believed in me and called me here to join this football club. “Of course, you need to show your qualities, but at that time it was important to hear about the man he is so that gave me no doubts to join him and Spurs because I think we can do brilliant things together. “He has a big personality, he’s a big character. I think his best trait is that he’s a great human being in the way he speaks and behaves. He has given us a new mentality in life and in football and has set the style he wants from his team. “I’m very happy to have made this “in the future I believe we can write our names on the walls of the stadium forever which will be one of my best dreams”
2 2 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC Away from his demanding duties as our first choice stopper this term, earlier this year Vic took time to give back to the Club as a special guest at a coaching clinic organised by our Academy for young goalkeepers from Under-9 up to Under-21. T h e I t a l y i n t e r n a t i o n a l provided guidance out on the grass before hosting a Q&A session in the analysis suite to deliver some fascinating tactical insights from the mind of an elite operator. Such is his humility and human side which makes him such a likeable character around Hotspur Way, Guglielmo admits that he came away from the experience feeling inspired by the younger generation of goalkeepers at the Club. “I can imagine what it would have felt like for a young goalkeeper to meet a First Team player because it was the same for me when I was the same age,” said Vic. “For me now, to have the opportunity to meet them and the way they behave, work and train, you see something that you can take from the young lads. “Things like the passion and desire they put in to do their best was inspiring and I was grateful for this moment because it felt nice to be able to give back.” Vicario shares his wisdom
THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 3 choice in the summer and I’m very happy with the future. I would have walked here if needed, and yes, sign in my own blood. It was an opportunity that I couldn’t miss so I was ready to come from Italy to the UK, walking. Or running!” Now taking the Premier League by storm in a new league and foreign territory, Guglielmo has been a tower of strength between the sticks and remains our only ever-present in the league this campaign, keeping six clean sheets helped by his 86 saves in 30 league appearances. One of those shutouts came in our 2-0 win against this evening’s opponents Nottingham Forest on 15 December last year, the type of typically solid display that led to him being awarded the ‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ at the London Football Awards in February. Possessing superb shot-stopping ability – which has earned him nominations for the Premier League’s Save of the Month in six of seven months so far – he also has a calmness in possession where he’s such an important cog in our build-up from the back and it’s no surprise to see him on 1,055 passes completed, with 115 accurate long passes. With our defensive high line, his awareness and reading of the game is also crucial to our defensive unit which is reflected in making 61 defensive actions outside the penalty area. Vic cares deeply. That much became evident at the City Ground earlier this term when he called the defensive unit into a huddle after the final whistle to celebrate their clean sheet together. He has been a revelation in his debut season in England’s top flight, and he has endeared himself to the Spurs faithful with his performances and passion in goal which is fully reciprocated. At 27, the former Empoli man is one of the older members of our squad that has an average age of 25 years and 162 days, the fourth youngest in the league, under Ange this season. Led by the ‘amazing’ Heung-Min Son, who played his 400th game for the Club last time out, Vic points to the quality and togetherness in this group and believes they can go on to achieve special things together. “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the country and worldwide so I’m very proud and happy to have joined and be part of this family,” he beamed. “It fills me with emotion and pride every day to come into this football club and to train with this group of players and represent this fantastic club in front of our amazing fans, so I’m really, really happy to be here. “To look up in the stands at the stadium and see the fans celebrating is one of the best feelings. Sometimes it’s about emotion, you are only a fan watching on from the other end of the pitch and, when your team-mate scores a goal, I have the same reaction as a fan in the stands. It’s about displaying my emotion and sometimes I go crazy because it’s an important goal or victory, so I love to do that. “We are still a very young team, so I hope we stay together for a long time because I think we have this quality and togetherness and desire to try to do something special. I think we are a close group with big friendships between each other. “I have a big relationship with Sonny, he’s my captain and an amazing lad. He’s a very good captain and a great person who sets a brilliant example for everyone that has come in to see how he behaves. “He’s very thankful to everyone inside the Spurs environment which is an important quality, and he shows that in a very good way. I’m very happy because he has so much respect from us as our captain, so we are very happy with him. “I can feel this now that in the future I believe we can write our names on the walls of the stadium forever which will be one of my best dreams.”

A Champions League-winning goalkeeper with Porto, he also managed the Portuguese giants as well as Rio Ave and Valencia, before a four-year stint with Wolverhampton Wanderers, which included winning promotion to the Premier League. After his departure from Spurs, he also coached in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad, winning a domestic cup and league title. Nuno’s side returned from the international break with a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace, followed by a scintillating 3-1 victory over Fulham that lifted them out of the relegation zone. Their previous outing saw them concede a late equaliser away at fellow relegation battlers Luton Town, while a four-point deduction imposed by the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules (pending an appeal) has undoubtedly made the battle to preserve their top-flight status tougher. Ange Postecoglou’s side took the lead just before half-time as Richarlison headed home from Dejan Kulusevski’s wonderful cross. And Kulusevski was on the scoresheet in the second period as he latched onto a defensive mistake to fire home. Yves Bissouma was sent off with 20 minutes to play, but we held out for an impressive victory. 3 4 M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N THFC MATCHDAY FOREST 0-1 SPURS 17.04.99, CITY GROUND A few weeks after we’d won the Worthington Cup, we inflicted a defeat on Forest which all but condemned to relegation from the Premier League. Our cup final matchwinner Allan Nielsen saw his penalty saved by Mark Crossley before Steffen Iversen netted the only goal of the game in the second half. FOREST 1-3 SPURS 07.04.90, CITY GROUND The two sides met on this day back in 1990 as we took the spoils with a solid win in Nottingham. Goals from Paul Stewart and Paul Allen put us firmly in control before former Spur Steve Hodge pulled one back for the home side, but Terry Venables’ team sealed the win thanks to Allen’s 71st-minute second of the game. FOREST 2-2 SPURS 09.04.83, CITY GROUND An entertaining affair 39 years ago this month, with both teams fighting for European qualification. We fell two goals behind before half-time as Peter Davenport and Ian Bowyer scored in quick succession, but Alan Brazil gave us hope in the 55th minute and the comeback was complete when Gary Mabbutt equalised. SPURS 1-0 FOREST 26.04.61, WHITE HART LANE White Hart Lane was a joyous place when Forest arrived back in April 1961 as it was the first time we had played in N17 since securing the title in our previous home game against Sheffield Wednesday. The Double was still on though, so the players needed to be on form and edged past Forest thanks to a Terry Medwin goal. STOKE CITY 1-2 SPURS 07.04.18 BRITANNIA STADIUM Three goals in 11 minutes saw this game burst into life on this day six years ago. Christian Eriksen opened the scoring on 52 minutes, Mame Biram Diouf levelled it up for the hosts before Harry Kane got the merest of touches on Eriksen’s free-kick to score the winner. It was our sixth Premier League win on the spin. SPURS 5-1 SUNDERLAND 07.04.14 WHITE HART LANE A comprehensive win over bottom club Sunderland 10 years ago, most notable for the game in which Harry Kane scored his first-ever Premier League goal. The Black Cats actually took the lead through Lee Cattermole before Emmanuel Adebayor levelled. GAMES ON THIS DAY APRIL ENCOUNTERS Kane put us ahead before goals from Christian Eriksen, Adebayor and Gylfi Sigurdsson put us in control. SPURS 2-2 EVERTON 07.04.13 WHITE HART LANE A goal at either end of the match saw us pick up a point against the Toffees. Emmanuel Adebayor scored after just 33 seconds but Everton hit back to lead through Phil Jagielka and Kevin Mirallas. In a frantic finale, Adebayor hit the post and Gylfi Sigurdsson turned home the rebound to salvage the draw. NOTTS COUNTY 0-2 SPURS 07.04.92 MEADOW LANE We faced the other side in Nottingham on this day in 1992, inflicting a defeat which left Notts County deep in relegation trouble in Division One. Gary Lineker struck both goals, heading home an Andy Gray corner before sticking out a leg to send David Howells’ low cross home in the second half. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0-1 SPURS 07.04.87 HILLSBOROUGH Clive Allen enjoyed a phenomenal goalscoring season in 1986/87, netting 49 times in all competitions including the only goal of the game as we beat Sheffield Wednesday on this day. The striker applied a left-foot finish to Steve Hodge’s cross to give us the win as we finished third in the First Division. HARRY KANE STRIKES AGAINST SUNDERLAND A DECADE AGO
THFC M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N 3 5 COUNTDOWN MICHAEL DAWSON Hugely popular centre-half who joined Forest at the age of 14 and worked his way into the first team, making 91 appearances before switching to Spurs in January 2005. Enjoyed nine great years in north London, captaining the side on many occasions including in Champions League action. Featured 324 times for us before a spell at Hull City prior to a return to the City Ground in May 2018 for the last two years of his career. CHRIS FAIRCLOUGH Another central defender who followed the same route, starting his career at Forest before moving to Spurs. Joined his hometown club in 1981 and made over 100 appearances prior to his arrival at the Lane in June 1987. Spent two years in N17 and later had spells at Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Notts County and York City. SERGE AURIER Ivory Coast international who spent his early career in France with the likes of Lens, Toulouse and PSG before he swapped the French capital for London, joining us in August 2017. One of only a handful of players to make their Spurs debut in a Champions League game, he played 110 times for us before moving to Forest in September 2022 via a year with Villarreal. Currently with Galatasaray. HARRY KANE 28.08.22 CITY GROUND Our first top-flight game against Forest for 23 years took place early last season following their promotion back to the Premier League. We started the campaign with two wins and a draw and headed to the City Ground looking to extend that unbeaten run. A goal in each half from Harry Kane ensured that happened as he netted in the fifth minute and again on 81 minutes to seal the victory. MARK FALCO 03.10.81 WHITE HART LANE A comfortable win over Forest came in October 1981 with Mark Falco netting twice in a 3-0 victory. His first was a glorious goal as Glenn Hoddle’s deft volleyed pass from Micky Hazard’s cross found Falco at the far post and he smashed the ball past Peter Shilton. Hoddle also set up Hazard for our second after the break before Falco wrapped up the points, slotting home inside the area. 18.05.91 WEMBLEY STADIUM With the year ending in ‘one’ and having demolished Arsenal in the semi-finals, hopes were certainly high among our fans that we would go on to lift the FA Cup back in 1991. Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest were our opponents and the sight of Terry Venables and Clough holding hands as the teams emerged from the Wembley Stadium tunnel will always be one of the abiding memories from this clash. The game itself was quite bizarre from a Spurs perspective because, for a while, everything that could have gone wrong, certainly did. Our talisman Paul Gascoigne, whose goals had played a huge part in getting us to the final, ended up leaving the game on a stretcher after a rash challenge on Gary Charles, with barely 20 minutes gone. To make matters worse, from the free-kick awarded for Gazza’s tackle, Stuart Pearce rifled home the opening goal for Forest. Gary Lineker then had a goal ruled out for a dubious offside call before being upended in the area by Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley, only for Lineker’s penalty to be saved – all before half-time. It looked like it wasn’t going to be our day until we levelled it up in the 55th minute thanks to a fine angled drive from Paul Stewart. Neither side could find a winner in 90 minutes so it went into extra time when, just four minutes in, Stewart flicked on a corner and Forest defender Des Walker – under pressure from Gary Mabbutt – headed into his own net. We held out during the extra half hour to achieve a record eighth FA Cup triumph, with Mabbutt climbing the famous Wembley steps to receive the trophy. 3 6 OPPOSITION VIEW THFC ow did you come to sign for Nottingham Forest from Swansea City in the summer of 1993? I’d played against Frank Clark in the old Fourth Division when he was manager at Leyton Orient at the time, so I think I played against him four times that season. I played really well against a lad called Ricky Otto. He was one of their better players and I did well in the games against them. When Brian Clough retired at Forest, Frank got the manager’s job there and I think I was about his third signing for Forest after Stan Collymore and Colin Cooper. In terms of debut seasons, your first campaign at Forest in 1993/94 must have been something of a dream for you as you were playing regularly as they won promotion to the Premier League? It was a whirlwind! Obviously I came from the old Fourth Division and then the next thing I’m sitting next to international players like Stuart Pearce and Mark Crossley. Players that you’ve seen on TV and you just go ‘Is this really happening?’. Things moved really quickly and luckily, I was straight in (the starting XI), in front of Brian Laws, the Forest legend. I was really nervous and questioned myself about whether I could really manage at that level. Fortunately, I could. Forest had a good record against Spurs during your time at the City Ground. You must have fond memories of the 4-1 win at White Hart Lane in September 1994? Yes, definitely! Again, I used to watch Spurs on TV and then all of a sudden, I’m actually there. The old White Hart Lane was a lovely stadium and as a kid you think ‘I would love to play there’. So, to play there and actually win against one of the top sides in the division with top players, it was special. Forest also triumphed in a fifth-round replay on penalties at the Lane in March 1996… That’s right. I think Mark Crossley saved the deciding penalty from Teddy Sheringham in the shootout. Crossley tried to run the length of the pitch in celebration, but we caught him pretty quickly because obviously he couldn’t run (laughs). We had the original game at the City Ground which got called off because of a snow storm. I remember the game started, despite there being talk about it being called off before that and, all of a sudden, this storm came in and you literally couldn’t see two feet in front of you! Who were the Spurs players you most admired during your career? Teddy Sheringham was kind of a Forest legend as well as a Spurs legend. When you’re doing your homework about teams and players that you’re coming up against he was always one that managers would talk about. You wouldn’t fear someone like him in terms of his pace, because you knew you could handle that, but he was so smart. David Ginola was one of the best players I played against. He is a big guy and he was so strong. He was so difficult to play against because he had two good feet. As a defender you didn’t know which way to show him, he could come inside or he could run you down the line and then cross it with his left. He was a difficult opponent….he was so silky and had such a great touch. OPPOSITION VIEW H Each matchday, ANDY GREEVES speaks to a player that formerly turned out for our visitors. Today, former Nottingham Forest defender DES LYTTLE – who made 228 appearances for the club between 1993 and 1999 – looks back on his time at the City Ground and recalls matches against Spurs during his career.
THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 3 7 You played over 400 club matches during your career, also turning out for teams including Port Vale, Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Northampton Town. How do you look back on your playing career as a whole? It was literally a dream. You speak to so many kids today and they say they want to be a footballer, so for me to have actually done it, I feel so grateful and I don’t take it for granted. I worked hard for it, there have been better players than me ability-wise but I don’t think many have got my heart and that was what my career was about. I wanted it so badly. It’s a pleasure to do interviews like this, to talk about what I did and say I got to do the best job ever. It took me around the world, it’s given me so much. There is nothing like those Saturdays when you’re walking out at grounds like White Hart Lane. It’s given me great memories. What have you made of Nottingham Forest this season? There have been some great moments this season. Obviously, with the recent points deduction Forest are now struggling, but there are a few other teams down there too and they aren’t out of it yet, they just need to put a run together. They need to keep some clean sheets and maybe win some games 1-0. It’s going be difficult for them but they’re not alone down there. No disrespect to Burnley or Sheffield United, but I think they have gone, and the other place is out of three or four teams really. Forest still have to play some of the teams around them so hopefully they can pick up some vital points there and stay up. I think they’ve got enough firepower to do it with Morgan Gibbs-White, Chris Woods, Taiwo Awoniyi etc. But can they win a game 1-0 and keep a clean sheet instead of it being an epic? That’s what will see them clear. What have you’ve been up to since retiring from playing? I finished playing when I was 38. I’d been in the Conference with Tamworth and Gary Mills, who used to play for Forest, was the manager and I played for him for the last year of my career. Then I went up to York City with him as first team coach. We left there after just over a year and I was doing my A-Licence coaching and went back to Staffordshire to finish that off. I had a friend who was working at Thomas Telford School in Shropshire and they’d just started a football academy so he asked me if I would go in every day and work with the kids while I completed my A-Licence. He then asked me to take over the footballing programme at the school. I’ve been the director of football there for the last 11 years. We understand Morgan Gibbs-White was under your tutelage at one stage? Yes, Morgan was here. We have a good link with Wolves as they send some of their players here for their education. We’re still one of the top schools for education as well as sport. We have some under-16 lads with us at the moment that have sat on the bench for Wolves in the cup. Finally, how do you think Forest will get on at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today? Tottenham will be firm favourites won’t they, but it’s the Premier League and anything can happen. Bottom can beat top. I’ll be wishing for a Forest win, but it will be a tough day for them. I’m going to go for a draw! “David Ginola was one of the best players I played against. THFC THE SPURS SHIRT 4 1 A new edition of The Spurs Shirt book, which chronicles the history of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur jersey, is now on sale in the Spurs Shop. This highly-acclaimed official publication tells the club’s story through an incredible collection of historic match worn jerseys and this new, fully revised and updated edition, includes this classic cup final jersey Having worn Hummel kit for the whole of the 1990/91 season – including for the glorious semi-final victory against Arsenal at Wembley just five weeks earlier – Tottenham Hotspur sprang a major surprise when they walked out on to the famous Wembley turf for their ninth FA Cup final appearance wearing a completely new Umbro strip. The surprise change of kit supplier was a direct result of the turmoil behind the scenes at Spurs at this time. By 1990 the club was estimated to be between £18 and £23 million in debt following the construction of the new East Stand and the failure of several commercial ventures, including a kit deal with Hummel that had seen Tottenham Hotspur operating as the Danish manufacturer’s UK distributor. In effect Spurs were not only acting as their own kit supplier but also the likes of Southampton, Aston Villa and Coventry City. The Hummel kits were hugely popular, but Spurs’ subsidiary company ordered way too much stock than they were able to sell and was losing huge amounts of money which led the club to negotiate an end to the deal at the conclusion of the 1990/91 season. Hummel did produce a set of shirts for the FA Cup Final but, having negotiated a new deal for the following season with Umbro, Spurs chairman Irving Scholar decided to risk a hefty lawsuit by wearing the new 1991/92 kit at Wembley. The first Hummel knew about it was when the set of shirts they had prepared for Wembley was sent back to them! The Umbro kit was uncomplicated, smart and stylish. However, the major talking point of the ensemble was the baggy navy shorts which, despite a modern cut, conjured up images of football from a bygone age. The shorts represented a daring departure for Spurs and Umbro, setting a trend for the 1990s that other manufacturers were quick to follow. The overall effect was a retroinspired modern classic which came in stark contrast to the kit worn by opponents Nottingham Forest, also supplied by Umbro, which looked instantly dated alongside Tottenham’s audacious new style. Despite the loss of talisman Paul Gascoigne to injury in the first half, the Lilywhites – inspired by goal-scoring man of the match Paul Stewart – won a record eighth final, and the resulting financial boost (along with the sale of Gazza to Lazio) helped the club fend off a looming financial crisis that had been caused in part by the commercially disastrous Hummel venture. The shirt pictured here was worn by Stewart, who levelled the scores at 1-1 and gave Spurs the impetus to go on and win the cup. Tickets are priced at £15 for Adults and £5 for Junior (Under-18s) and are available via our official website, so make sure you don’t miss out! MILESTONES FOR ASH AND ROS Two of our players celebrated reaching significant personal landmarks recently. Ashleigh Neville made her 150th appearance for the Club in our 1-0 victory over Bristol City in the Barclays Women’s Super League on 24 March. The defender, who joined us in July 2017, started the game at Ashton Gate and was part of the backline that secured back-to-back clean sheets in the WSL for the first time this season. Making her 18th appearance of the campaign, Ashleigh has now played 117 league games (36 in the FA Women’s Championship and 81 in the WSL), 13 in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup and 20 in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup – scoring 16 goals in the process. The 30-year-old was part of the squad that secured promotion to England’s top division for the first time in 2019, where she featured in 19 games and scored on four occasions. Meanwhile, Rosella Ayane described it as a ‘special milestone’ as she became a Spurs centurion. The 27-year-old, who made her debut in our WSL fixture against Everton in September 2020, after making the move from Bristol City, has now surpassed an impressive 100 appearances for the Club. Making her 16th appearance of the campaign in all competitions, Rosella came on as a second half substitute in our 1-0 victory over Leicester City on 17 March to achieve her landmark appearance. LOAN WATCH Lenna Gunning-Williams was on the scoresheet for Ipswich Town in their recent 5-0 victory over Chatham Town as more than 10,000 supporters were in attendance for their first-ever league game at Portman Road. Making her 21st appearance of the season, the young forward produced a lovely finish to secure Town’s fourth of the afternoon, her 14th goal of the campaign – with 10 in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division. She is the club’s second highest goalscorer this season. Ria Percival also found the back of the net for FA Women’s Championship side Crystal Palace in their 3-0 victory over Watford at Selhurst Park, while Araya Dennis was an unused substitute. In Germany, Nikola Karczewska, who joined Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the 2023/24 campaign, has netted 10 goals in all competitions so far and seven of those coming in 15 Frauen-Bundesliga appearances, with the Poland international sixth in the goalscoring charts in the league. DREW’S DELIGHTED TO BE BACK Drew Spence made her long-awaited return to action at the beginning of March and she has loved every minute being back on the pitch. The experienced midfielder suffered a hamstring issue in the opening weeks of November that kept her on the sidelines for over four months before eventually making her comeback in our Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium as she was introduced just after the hour mark. Drew then returned to the starting XI just a few weeks later in our 1-0 victory over Leicester City at Brisbane Road. “I’m just really happy to be back,” Drew explained. “Obviously it was a long time of me being out injured, so it was just nice to find my feet again and I was excited to be back on the pitch, I have missed it a lot. “Just to step out on the grass again and get that feeling with my teammates again was really good. When you are away from the game for that long you can miss everything about it. I haven’t had an injury that has kept me out for that long before, so it was mentally tough but the physio’s and everyone around the building helped me a lot. “All the players supported throughout my recovery, including Olga [Ahtinen] and Eveliina [Summanen] who were injured at the same time and had them for a chunk of the rehab as well. We all helped each other, especially all being midfielders and missing being out there, so there was a massive support network and all the girls helped me once I returned.” WARMING UP AHEAD OF THE GAME ELLIS LEHANE BREAKS THROUGH THE CORK DEFENCE WSL TABLE HOME GAMES AT BRISBANE ROAD UNLESS STATED ALL FIXTURES SUBJECT TO CHANGE. 4 4 UNDER-21S THFC SEMI-FINALS AWAIT! Persistence paid off for our Under-21s as late goals from Jamie Donley and Will Lankshear gave us a 3-1 win at Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup on Tuesday night. Having led at the break through the excellent Yago Santiago, we conceded an equaliser to Kaden Young just two minutes into the second half, but kept pushing and probing against the stubborn hosts, Lankshear denied on numerous occasions by goalkeeper James Wright before Donley finally fired us deservedly back in front with nine minutes remaining, hammering Jude Soonsup-Bell’s low cross low inside the near post with a pinpoint strike. And Lankshear, who had earlier added to his frustrations by heading against the post and firing a good chance over the bar, eventually got his goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to round off the victory and send us marching into the semi-finals of what is our debut campaign in the competition. Many of the players involved at Bodymoor Heath were part of the successful youth team that won the Under-17 and Under-18 versions of this tournament last year, and you sensed a hunger to repeat the feat, although we had to work hard to break down a Villa side that defended in numbers and didn’t trouble us at the back on too many occasions. Aston Villa: Wright (c), Rowe, Patterson, Katsukunya, Bogarde, Borland, Young (Afoka 82), Alcock (Munroe 87), Moore (Lutz 82), Pierre (Wilson 60), Aloba. Substitute (not used): Emery. Spurs: Gunter, Ashcroft, Cassanova, Dorrington, Abbott (c), Hall, Soonsup-Bell, Donley, Lankshear, Scarlett (John 71), Santiago. Substitutes (not used): Maguire, Kyerematen, Robson, Ajayi. WAYNE’S DELIGHT AT LATEST WIN Under-21s Coach Wayne Burnett praised his side for finding a way past a resilient Aston Villa side in midweek. He told SPURSPLAY after the 3-1 win: “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve progressed into the semi-final and I thought we deserved to be there. I thought we dominated the ball in the early stages of the first half without really causing them too many problems, they managed the space well but we managed to get a goal and had one or two other chances. “In the second half we didn’t start particularly well for the first 15 minutes, they scored and then we got back into our rhythm and created chances. THFC UNDER-21S 4 5 “Again, they managed the space well, it was difficult at times to get into positions to get some real goalscoring opportunities but in the end we managed to create some chances and got another two goals.” FIXTURE NEWS Our scheduled away fixture against Crystal Palace in the Premier League 2 on Friday 29 March was postponed. The match couldn’t take place due to a waterlogged pitch at the VBS Community Stadium. A new date will be confirmed in due course. DANTE’S FOCUS Dante Cassanova has spoken of his determination to help our Under-21s enjoy a successful end to the season. The 19-year-old has been enjoying his best run in the team at this level in recent weeks and has often moved from his more recognised midfield berth to operate in the heart of the back four. “I want to have a part in the team and if at the back is where I’m playing, I’ll do everything I can to help the team try to progress, so it’s good,” he reflected. “We have a semi-final to come now, but we’ve got important games before that so we’ll be focused on those as well.” Reacting to our win at Aston Villa on Tuesday, he added: “It’s always good to be into the semi-final of a cup, we’ve been preparing for this for a long time. The end goal was to progress into the next round and we’ve done that. “I think we faced a team that didn’t really want to press us much, at times we didn’t move the ball quickly enough in the first half but I think we deserved to go in 1-0 up. In the second half we didn’t start at our best and that’s why we conceded but we found our way again shortly afterwards and that’s why we won the game. At half-time we had a good talk, the gaffer told us to move the ball quicker and get wider and I think that helped us towards the end and that’s why we were able to get those two late goals.” P W D L F A D PTS SPURS 15 12 2 1 43 18 +25 38 WEST HAM 17 11 3 3 47 24 +23 36 FULHAM 17 10 4 3 47 25 +22 34 ARSENAL 16 9 4 3 38 24 +14 31 WOLVES 17 9 3 5 36 28 +8 30 LIVERPOOL 16 9 3 4 30 22 +8 30 CHELSEA 17 9 2 6 45 30 +15 29 BRIGHTON 17 8 3 6 33 33 +0 27 MIDDLESBROUGH 17 8 3 6 32 33 -1 27 READING 16 8 3 5 27 33 -6 27 SUNDERLAND 16 7 4 5 36 28 +8 25 MAN UNITED 15 7 2 6 47 34 +13 23 CRYSTAL PALACE 16 7 2 7 39 38 +1 23 STOKE CITY 17 7 1 9 35 48 -13 22 NORWICH CITY 17 6 2 9 39 37 +2 20 SOUTHAMPTON 16 6 2 8 37 38 -1 20 BLACKBURN ROVERS 16 6 2 8 35 50 -15 20 ASTON VILLA 15 5 4 6 33 34 -1 19 NOTTM FOREST 15 5 4 6 22 32 -10 19 WEST BROM 17 4 4 9 18 29 -11 16 EVERTON 16 4 3 9 22 33 -11 15 LEICESTER CITY 17 3 5 9 26 37 -11 14 DERBY COUNTY 17 4 1 12 25 32 -7 13 NEWCASTLE UNITED 15 3 4 8 23 37 -14 13 MAN CITY 17 2 6 9 27 46 -19 12 LEEDS UNITED 15 3 2 10 20 39 -19 11 DATE H/A OPPOSITION RES AUGUST SAT 12 A MANCHESTER CITY 5-0 SAT 19 H NEWCASTLE UNITED 4-1 FRI 25 A DERBY COUNTY 2-0 TUE 29 H SUNDERLAND (PL CUP) 3-2 SEPTEMBER SAT 2 H BLACKBURN ROVERS 4-0 TUE 19 A COLCHESTER (EFL TROPHY) 5-0 MON 25 A STOKE CITY 2-0 OCTOBER MON 2 H CHELSEA 4-2 MON 9 A BRISTOL CITY (PL CUP) 2-1 FRI 27 A SUNDERLAND 4-2 TUES 31 A PETERBOROUGH (EFL TROPHY) 1-3 NOVEMBER FRI 3 A NORWICH CITY 4-3 TUE 7 A CAMBRIDGE UTD (EFL TROPHY) 1-4 SUN 12 A PETERBOROUGH (PL CUP) 2-0 DECEMBER MON 11 A SUNDERLAND (PL CUP) 2-1 MON 18 H LEEDS UNITED 1-0 JANUARY FRI 12 A SOUTHAMPTON 3-2 SAT 27 H ASTON VILLA 5-3 TUE 30 H+ BRISTOL CITY (PL CUP) 1-0 FEBRUARY SAT 3 H+ PETERBOROUGH (PL CUP) 0-3 SAT 17 H* WEST HAM UNITED 1-1 SAT 24 H^ FLEETWOOD TOWN (PL CUP) 6-0 MARCH SAT 2 H* EVERTON 1-2 FRI 8 A ARSENAL 1-1 SUN 17 A MIDDLESBROUGH 2-1 FRI 29 A CRYSTAL PALACE P-P APRIL TUE 2 A ASTON VILLA (PL CUP) 3-1 SAT 6 H* READING 1PM MON 15 H WOLVES 7PM SAT 20 H* MANCHESTER UNITED 12PM FRI 26 A FULHAM 7PM UP TO AND INCLUDING 22.03.24 FIXTURES & RESULTS PL 2 TABLE * AT HOTSPUR WAY, + AT CLARENCE PARK, DANTE CASSANOVA ^ AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM HOME GAMES PLAYED AT STEVENAGE
4 6 UNDER-18S THFC ROWSWELL RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS Under-18s defender James Rowswell recently returned to his old school in Bengeo, Hertfordshire to chart his rise through the Club’s Global Football Development programme to signing a professional contract. The 17-year-old has been part of the Club’s Player Development Programmes since the age of five, beginning at Haileybury College, before joining Development Centres at Stevenage and Epping, which are run by the Club for young players of all levels as alternative pathways to a professional career in football. One of the afterschool sessions he attended around the time his talent was first identified was at Bengeo Primary School, and James celebrated the signing of his first contract by paying them and the coaches who supported him on the development programme a visit. There, he assisted with a football coaching session and took part in a Q&A with Year 6 students to offer inspiration and discuss his journey to becoming a professional footballer through the Club’s programmes. He also spent time addressing some of the Year 1 students. Speaking at the school, James said: “It’s been a brilliant experience coming back here, several years down the line. I remember these sessions when I was younger – the Club’s coaches would arrive and I would always try to impress them, trying my hardest to improve. What it shows is that there is a clear pathway for the kids of these ages, going through the Club’s Development Programmes to the elite stages or the Academy, and I hope they can see that journey.” Paul Griffiths, our Education and Football Development Centres Manager, said: “James absolutely encompasses what our Football Development Programme is about. He was on one of these programmes here at Bengeo Primary School about 10 years ago, but he has also been part of our wider programmes and has really lived every part of that journey with us, so to see him finally get that professional contract recently was amazing.” PRO CONTRACTS FOR DUO We recently announced that Callum Olusesi and Leo Black have signed their first professional contracts with the Club. Callum, a 17-year-old central midfielder, featured regularly for our Under-18s in 2022/23 while still a schoolboy and has continued to be a key figure in this age group this season, after going full-time last summer. He was part of the young team that won the Under-17 and Under-18 Premier League Cup double last term and has also featured for us in the Under-19 UEFA Youth League. On the international stage, Callum has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 levels to date. Leo, 18, has been a regular starter for our Under-18s this season, having switched from his previous midfield position to operate in an inverted rightback role at the start of the campaign. He made his Under-18 Premier League debut for us during the 2021/22 campaign while still a schoolboy, before helping our young side win the Under-17 Premier League Cup last season. He recently captained our Under-18s for the first time in a thrilling 6-3 win at Southampton – a game in which he scored a stunning long-range goal – while also stepping up to make his debut for our Under-21s in a 1-0 victory against Bristol City in the Premier League Cup. Today, we meet HERBIE JAMES… NAME: Herbie James. POSITION: Forward. BORN: 24 November, 2006, in Macclesfield. Moved to the Bahamas and then San Diego as a child, then moved back to Congleton in 2015. LAST SCHOOL: St Bede’s College. WHEN DID YOU FIRST JOIN SPURS? “I was at Manchester City from a young age and joined Spurs last year.” WHO DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH IN TRAINING? “I like to keep eye on Brennan Johnson, to look at all the good bits in his game and to understand what the Club likes in its wingers – fast, arriving at the back post – and I think Brennan has a lot of those things.” IF YOU COULD MEET SOMEONE FAMOUS, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? “I would say Peter Tosh, the reggae singer from back in the day. He was related to my dad and was huge in America. I’d also love to meet Usain Bolt to learn about his approach and achievements.” ANY HIDDEN TALENTS? “I’ve got a black belt in karate, all my brothers have got belts in karate as well. In terms of languages, I’ve got a lot of family in Portugal so I could get by with speaking very basic Portuguese.” FIRST FOOTBALL SHIRT? “It was a Yaya Toure 42 City kit, which was way too big for me! We accidentally got a medium men’s size instead of a medium kid’s one! We had to send it back and I ended up getting a smaller one with Sergio Aguero’s name on instead.” FAVOURITE FOOD? “Seabass and rice.” FAVOURITE TV SHOW? “Breaking Bad.” IF YOU COULDN’T BE A FOOTBALLER, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE INSTEAD? “It would have to be in sport – I’d perhaps try to get into the American Football environment. I like the NFL and to see what the players do day-to-day, I find it really cool.” GETTING TO KNOW… HERBIE JAMES
