with today’s final home game
of the season against Burnley,
CRISTIAN ROMERO reflects on an
impressive debut campaign with
us in which he’s defended with
drive and authority.
By Billy Shaw
W e’ve all heard the phrase ‘Rolls-
Royce of a defender’ wheeled out
every once in a while to describe a
highly-rated centre-half, and while the
same could undoubtedly be said of Cristian
Romero, it’s about much more than just grace
and elegance on the pitch for the Argentine
international.
Since his arrival from Italian side Atalanta last
summer, he’s shown the class and poise of that
analogy and added in the rugged durability of a
rally car, plus the bursts of pace and attacking
tendencies associated with a Formula 1 racing
machine.
You might even throw ‘London taxi’ into the
equation, considering he’s been known to give
his captain and near neighbour Hugo Lloris a lift
to the training ground on certain days!
In reality of course, he does business on two
feet rather than four wheels, standing firm even
when it comes to defending against some of the
Premier League’s most threatening attackers.
As he approaches the end of a superb first
season in our colours, the man known as ‘Cuti’
has underlined how much he’s relishing being a
driving force in the heart of our defence.

came at the worst possible time for both himself
and the team.
His response, though, was first class as he
slotted straight back into our defensive line upon
his return to action in February and has hardly
put a foot wrong since.
“I was very angry about the injury – it kept me

“I think now, coming to the end of the season,
I’ve been okay in the main, but I’m aware that the
team and myself need to improve a lot of things.
We’re at a club with amazing players and a great

getting better.”
“WE’RE AT A

DAILY GOAL”
Having spent the previous three years of his
career plying his trade in Italy, Cristian’s move to
the Premier League last year represented a signif-
icant new challenge, but it was one he embraced
from the outset, quickly endearing himself to our
supporters with his combative, all-action style.
But it wasn’t just on the pitch where he encoun-
tered change. During his spell out injured at the
tail end of 2021, he became a father – a real boost
for him during a trying time.
“My first son was born in London, so this city
and this club will forever be in my heart because
of that,” smiled the 24-year-old. “I’m enjoying
the city a lot with my wife and my family – it’s an
amazing place – and in terms of the football club,
I have a lot of great relationships with people in
the squad as well.
“If we speak about my adaptation when I first
arrived here, the main person who really helped
me to settle in was Gio (Lo Celso) – he was the
one who I spent the most time with. Sadly he left
the club on loan, but we have a great group of
players here and I get on with all my team-mates
nowadays.”
20
THFC Cristian Romero
Hailing from Argentina and having played in
Italy, Cristian speaks Spanish and Italian but is
understandably still learning English.
“I’d say because of the language barrier, I get
on mostly with the Spanish and Italian-speaking
players that we have, people like Rodrigo
(Bentancur), Dejan (Kulusevski), Pierluigi (Gollini),
Hugo (Lloris), Davinson (Sanchez) and Emerson
(Royal),” he added.
“We have a great group here and a really good
relationship in the locker room, which helps us on
and off the pitch.”
For much of the second half of the campaign,
Cuti has manned the barricades along with Eric
Dier and Ben Davies in Antonio’s favoured three-
at-the-back system. The youngest of the three by
some way – he’s four years Eric’s junior and five
years younger than Ben – Cristian’s impressive
displays have seen him build up a solid rapport
with his central defensive comrades, something
that was fully in evidence in the 1-1 draw at Liver-
pool last weekend where the trio combined to
produce 29 clearances and eight blocked shots.
“WE HAVE A
GREAT GROUP
HERE AND A
REALLY GOOD
RELATIONSHIP
IN THE LOCKER
ROOM, WHICH
HELPS US ON
AND OFF THE
PITCH.”
“With Eric, it’s been really good because he
also speaks Spanish and with Ben, I have a great
relationship as well,” he explained. “I guess you
can see this on the pitch – we’ve put in a lot of
effort since Conte’s arrival and we’ve done lots
of tactical work every day.
“Changes are not always easy at the beginning
but after a few games with the boss, we adapted
well to what we needed to do and we have to
continue working like this to achieve good
results. We are happy with the way we are work-
ing, but at the same time we are always looking
to improve.”
