ood afternoon and welcome t o To t t e n h a m H o t s p u r Stadium for today’s Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth. Seven days ago we secured an important three points here against Brighton & Hove Albion. It was a tough game against an in-form team, however we showed passion, character and a good reaction following two disappointing results. Sonny opened the scoring for us last weekend and in doing so, recorded his 100th goal in the Premier League. It was a brilliant goal which will give him confidence for the rest of the season and reaching this milestone is something he should be proud of. Everyone was happy for Sonny and we all had the opportunity to congratulate him and celebrate this fantastic achievement together in the dressing room after the game. Our attention soon turned to today’s match and I should like to G welcome Gary O’Neil, his players, staff and everyone associated with Bournemouth. We saw at Vitality Stadium earlier in the season what a strong team Bournemouth can be, as they pushed us all the way to the final whistle in what was one of our toughest away games. Bournemouth are going into this match on the back of two wins from their last three fixtures and so we know we have to prepare and approach the game in the right way. With eight games remaining we have to remain focussed in our push to try to finish as high as possible in the table. We are working hard every day on the training pitch to improve because we know that, at this stage of the season, every point is so important. With your support we are stronger, and I look forward to hearing you right behind us on from the first whistle until the last. 8 THFC AROUND THE CLUB TH21_08-09_News 170.indd 8 13/04/2023 09:11

THFC 9 AROUND THE CLUB NEWS DESK We are proud to announce our stadium has been included as one of 10 host venues for the UK & Ireland’s joint bid to host UEFA EURO 2028. Formally submitted to UEFA on Wednesday, the bid sets out our clear and compelling vision for UEFA EURO 2028: ‘Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future’. UEFA EURO 2028 will achieve a strong and sustainable legacy for football and wider society, helping to drive economic growth in local communities. If the UK & Ireland bid is successful, the tournament’s arrival in London N17 will bring a further boost to one of the capital’s most deprived areas, already benefitting from circa £300m generated by events at our stadium every year. Chairman Daniel Levy said:  “Our stadium’s inclusion in the UK & Ireland’s joint bid to host UEFA EURO 2028 is another landmark moment for both the Club, our new stadium and Tottenham as an area. We are extremely proud to have delivered a venue in the heart of London N17 capable of staging one of the world’s greatest sporting events that, if the bid is successful, will see thousands from all over Europe descend on our neighbourhood for a celebration of our beautiful game. Tottenham Hotspur is delighted to give its full backing to the UK & Ireland bid, which promises to transform the game at grassroots level and provide a major economic boost across our nations.” Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the third largest arena to be named in the bid, alongside Wembley Stadium, the National Stadium of Wales, City of Manchester Stadium, the new Everton stadium, St James’ Park, Villa Park, Hampden Park, Dublin Arena and Casement Park (Belfast). TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM INCLUDED IN UEFA EURO 2028 BID We were sorry to hear of the passing of John Sainty, a player who spent time at both of today’s clubs during his career, who died last week at the age of 77. Born in Poplar in March 1946, John signed for us as an amateur in July 1961, turning professional two years later and earning an England schoolboy cap. A versatile player who switched from defender to centreforward during his time with us, he was a prolific goalscorer for our A Team but never made the breakthrough into the first team. He joined Reading in August 1967 and then moved to Bournemouth in February 1970, helping them secure a first-ever promotion the following season, as they returned to Division Three after relegation the previous year. After spells with Mansfield Town and Aldershot, he moved into coaching and worked under former Cherries manager John Bond at Norwich City and Manchester City, then managed Chester City while he also worked as Academy Director and Chief Scout at Southampton before later scouting for Bournemouth. We would like to express our condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. JOHN SAINTY Heung-Min Son has become the first Asian player to score 100 goals in the Premier League and only the second player to hit a century for the Club in the competition. Sonny reached the milestone in spectacular style with a 25-yard curler in our 2-1 win over Brighton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Harry Kane grabbed the winner in the second half and incredibly, the deadly duo have now scored 306 Premier League goals for us between them. Sonny recently leapfrogged Teddy Sheringham (97) into second place in our all-time Premier League goalscoring list and now becomes the 34th player to make it to a century since 1992/93. THFC 1 3 FIVES LEE BARNARD SPURS 2000/08; BOURNEMOUTH 2012/13 An aggressive striker and great finisher, ‘Barney’ joined our Academy full-time in July 2000, signing professional forms two years later. A regular goalscorer at youth and reserve level, his 19 goals in 19 games as we won the FA Premier Reserve League South title in 2005/06 earned call-ups to friendlies and, ultimately, his first team debut against Manchester United in April 2006, one of three substitute appearances that season. However, with the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Mido around, chances were limited and he had to overcome his fair share of injuries as well. Lee’s spell at Bournemouth came on loan in 2012/13, where he scored five goals in League One. Now 38, he also had spells at 10 other league clubs, with notable success at Southend (37 goals in 85 appearances, 2007-09) and Southampton (24 in 73, 2010-12) before ending his career in non-league football at Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon & Tiptree. CHARLIE DANIELS SPURS 2003/09; BOURNEMOUTH 2012/20 Equally at home at left-back or left midfield, Charlie became a first year scholar with us in July 2003, signing professional forms two years later. He played in pre-season friendlies against Kaizer Chiefs and Stevenage Borough in the summer of 2007 but didn’t quite make the breakthrough, moving to Leyton Orient in January 2009. His career blossomed from there and a move to Bournemouth in 2012 would take him through the divisions to the Premier League. He played 265 times for the Cherries, including 129 appearances in the top flight. Now 36, Charlie had spells at Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Colchester before retiring this year. He’s currently Watford’s Under-18s lead coach. ADAM SMITH SPURS 2007/14; BOURNEMOUTH 2010/11, 2014-PRESENT Still at Bournemouth and likely to line-up against us this afternoon, Adam joined our Academy full-time in July 2007 and signed professional forms a year later. …ACADEMY GRADUATES WHO ALSO PLAYED FOR BOURNEMOUTH F I V E ... 1 2 3 TH21_12-15_Fives 170.indd 13 13/04/2023 09:03

THFC 1 5 FIVES A flying right-back who loves to bomb forward, he was just 17 when he appeared in friendlies for us against Leyton Orient and Borussia Dortmund in 2008, but it wasn’t until May 2012 that he made his first team debut off the bench against Fulham in the Premier League. Bournemouth was one of Adam’s seven loan spells during his time at Spurs, an impressive 42 games in League One in 2011/12. Capped across five England youth levels, including 11 caps for the Under-21s, he made just one more appearance for us before returning to the Vitality in 2014. Then in the Championship, Adam helped the Cherries to promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and has now racked up 336 appearances, including 172 in the top flight. RYAN FREDERICKS SPURS 2009/14; BOURNEMOUTH 2022-PRESENT 01.11.20 Another flying full-back, Ryan joined our first year Academy in July 2009 and signed professional forms a year later. He was one of a clutch of players trusted by Harry Redknapp to play Europa League football in 2011/12 alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll, Iago Falque and Jake Nicholson. Ryan made his debut against Hearts – the same as Harry Kane – in August 2011 and played three times that campaign, aged 18. Loan spells followed at Brentford, Millwall and Middlesbrough before he joined Bristol City on a permanent deal in 2015. He moved from there to Fulham and after three seasons at Craven Cottage, got his break in the Premier League with a switch to West Ham in 2018. Recently turned 30, Ryan played 77 times for the Hammers before joining Bournemouth this season. CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS SPURS 2014/22; BOURNEMOUTH 2020/21 A powerful, robust central defender who is good on the ball, Cameron joined our Academy full-time in July 2014, joining our professional ranks in December that year. Just under two years later, and still only 18, he made his first team debut under Mauricio Pochettino in the League Cup against Gillingham. That was one of four appearances that season and it wasn’t until last season, 2021/22, that he made his fifth and ultimately last in our colours against Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Conference League. In-between, he enjoyed a number of loan spells, including a successful stint at Bournemouth under Jonathan Woodgate in 2020/21, where he made 26 appearances. Capped 11 times by the USA, Cameron, now 24, spent 2021/22 on loan at Celtic, where he won the SPL and League Cup double, and joined the Hoops on a permanent deal last summer. 4 5 TH21_12-15_Fives 170.indd 15 13/04/2023 09:03

THFC 1 7 THE BIG INTERVIEW indset is massive to Dejan Kulusevski. After his move to Spurs from Juventus in 2022, the 22-year-old Swede announced himself to the Premier League in fine style with five goals and eight assists in 18 appearances and played a key role in clinching a Champions League spot in the season finale. He picked up where he left off this campaign, bagging a goal and an assist in the curtain raiser against Southampton before providing two more assists against Nottingham Forest and Leicester City until an injury ruled him out for six games in October. He returned from this setback with consecutive assists against Liverpool and Leeds United before club football was put on hold during the World Cup in November. However, with one goal and assist this calendar year, Deki has struggled to rekindle his clinical edge in the final third but his mentality shows a player who is hungry to regain that form. “It’s been tough,” said the Sweden international. “I was very disappointed with my performances in recent months, I learnt a lot. I still have a lot of growth to do and you can’t be too hard on yourself. “Anything can happen in football, you have to be ready to adapt very quick. This season, there’s been a lot of ups and downs, it’s been hard but I always have to perform no matter what the situation. Other teams know how the team plays and about how I play, so we have to adapt, change things and find solutions to get better because it’s been difficult. “Even if you win or lose, you have to just think about the process and not get too attached to results, keep doing what you can and always do the right things even if you lose. You have to accept it as a footballer, you can’t always win and play well but I’m feeling very good mentally and physically. I have a good feeling I’m going to finish this season strong.” Born and raised in Sweden, Dejan’s humble upbringing by Swedish-North Macedonian parents and his experiences growing up in Stockholm have helped forge his strong mentality. From being told at school he wouldn’t make it as a BY WILL HOLDERNESS M DETERMINED DEKI EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SWEDISH INTERNATIONAL DEJAN KULUSEVSKI, WHO INSISTS WE STILL HAVE PLENTY TO PLAY FOR AS HE DISCUSSES HIS CAREER SO FAR AND HIS FORM THIS SEASON. THFC 1 9 THE BIG INTERVIEW professional footballer to leaving his family behind to join Atalanta in Italy at 15 years old, ‘Deki’ has overcome many obstacles already and has come a long way since the days of playing in the streets of Sweden’s capital. “When I was seven, I said: ‘I’m going to be a football player’,” he explained. “My teachers would tell me, ‘no, it’s very hard to make it’, but I was adamant that I was going to because I didn’t want to do anything else. “We knew about Atalanta because they’re a big club and we are football obsessed in my family. My mother told me she would never hold me back because she would feel bad about it. It was really big of her to let me go. “In the beginning it was difficult because nobody spoke English so I had to learn Italian as fast as possible so I could understand my team-mates and coaches. I got to learn a new culture and language and went to a new school and met wonderful people. But leaving my family and friends behind was hard because I missed them. Sometimes I wanted to go home but looking back I would do it again because I learnt so much and it’s where I turned professional. “I have come a long way, I’m grateful because I’m so lucky to play at this level, I can never take anything for granted. I’m always looking forward but I’m thankful to play football; it’s an amazing feeling.” After breaking through at Atalanta to make his Serie A debut as an 18-year-old in January 2019, Dejan then joined Parma on loan that July before impressive displays in the Italian top-flight secured him a move to Juventus a year after his league debut. Remaining on loan at Parma until the end of the season, the Swede notched 10 goals and nine assists on his way to being awarded Serie A’s Best Young Player in a remarkable breakthrough season in Italy. With higher expectations at the ‘Old Lady’, Deki learnt a lot about handling pressure whilst in Turin, especially from Cristiano Ronaldo, who was in the dressing room at the time. “I HAVE COME A LONG WAY, I’M GRATEFUL BECAUSE I’M SO LUCKY TO PLAY AT THIS LEVEL” Cheers with no alcohol Now you can Great taste. THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC 2 1 “At Parma I had one year to impress so it was important I put everything into that season,” he explained. “From the first training session I wanted to show everyone I was serious and there to help the team and I played some of the best football of my career. “I couldn’t believe it, I was so happy to join Juventus. But that’s where the pressure started, I went into every training session like it was the last of my life and I had to perform every minute. It was amazing to play with Cristiano, it will stay with me forever and one I will tell my kids as he’s one of the best players of all time. Even if the team lost or he had a bad day he was always working hard and performing. He taught me to always stay true to the path and not focus too much on results.” Still only 22 years old, Deki has been playing regularly in our front three under both Antonio Conte and now Cristian Stellini, showing glimpses of his attacking quality down our right flank and is only one assist behind his tally of eight from last term. As we push for a top four finish with eight Premier League games to go, Deki has shown throughout his career that he has the mental resilience to overcome challenges put in his path and has extra motivation to deliver so he can hear his name ringing out at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium once again. “It’s a fantastic song,” exclaimed Deki. “It’s so fun, I saw my face on the banner and was laughing when they were singing it. I now have to score more goals and get more assists so I can hear it more often because it gives me energy! The fans are amazing, you always respect them, they are a huge part of the club even when you win or lose. I always want to make people happy, make people smile. “I want to score and assist in every game. But I’m realistic, I know it’s probably not going to happen all the time so I always try to be as productive as I can to try to help the team. We have eight games to go and want to try to add to my tally as much as possible. “We had a good home win against Brighton and now we have another game today against Bournemouth. It’s always good to play at home in our fantastic stadium! I believe in this team, we have a lot of quality so we have to show it and back up that win to finish strong.” “I BELIEVE IN THIS TEAM, WE HAVE A LOT OF QUALITY” TH21_16-21_Main_Interview_Kulusevski 170.indd 21 13/04/2023 11:46

THFC 2 3 MAKING THEIR DEBUTS It was 38 years ago this week that David Leworthy made his Spurs debut, the striker starting up front for the visit of Arsenal as the 1984/85 season entered its critical stage. His journey to the top-flight had certainly been a circuitous one, having emigrated to Australia with his family as a toddler before returning to the UK when he was eight and then being signed by Portsmouth on leaving school. Leworthy turned professional with Pompey but only made one league appearance in a Division Three fixture in October 1981 and moved into non-league football with Fareham Town. A regular scorer for the Hampshire club, he caught the eye of Spurs and we snapped him up in August 1984, hoping he would follow the likes of Graham Roberts and Tony Galvin in treading the successful path from non-league to international status. Leworthy hadn’t even made it onto the bench for Peter Shreeves’ side during his first year with us, but was thrown in at the deep end when Arsenal arrived at the Lane, taking the place of Garth Crooks in attack. We were just about in the title race at the time, sitting in third place and four points behind leaders Everton, although they had two games in hand on us. But we’d lost our way, surprisingly suffering defeat in three of our last four home games and that sequence got worse as Arsenal made the short trip home with three points in the bag thanks to a 2-0 win. Charlie Nicholas and Brian Talbot scored their goals, although had Roberts converted his penalty rather than struck the crossbar with 10 minutes to go and the score at 1-0, it might have been a different story. As for Leworthy, it was a promising debut in difficult circumstances with his best chance coming from a rasping drive that went just over. Our subsequent match programme wrote: ‘David Leworthy made his debut for us and came through a tough baptism with a lot of credit. He showed good control and balance and was a constant threat to Arsenal’s defence.’ He kept his place in our next match and scored twice despite yet another home defeat as we lost 2-3 to Ipswich Town. In total, David made 12 appearances and scored four times before moving to Oxford United in December 1985. He later had spells with Shrewsbury Town and Reading, then moving back to non-league football and serving the likes of Colchester United. Farnborough Town, Dover Athletic and Kingstonians while later managing Havant and Waterlooville, Banstead Athletic and Croydon. DAVID LEWORTHY The only player to make their Spurs debut actually on this day did so over 100 years ago! Half-back James Freeborough donned our jersey for the first time in Southern League action on 15 April 1905 when we beat Wellingborough 1-0. DID YOU KNOW? 2 4 THFC MAKING THEIR DEBUTS PETER BAKER One of the unsung heroes of our Double-winning side, full-back Peter Baker was certainly no overnight success of that 1960/61 side as he made his Spurs debut seven years earlier. He joined us as an 18-year-old amateur in the summer of 1949 while playing for Enfield but did not make the move into the professional ranks until October, 1952. It wasn’t until towards the end of that 1952/53 campaign that he first donned our famous lilywhite shirt, making his Football League debut for our visit to Sunderland on 18 April 1953 when he stepped in to replace regular full-back Alf Ramsey, who was on international duty for England. We drew 1-1 at Roker Park, Sonny Walters putting us ahead shortly before half-time before the home side levelled through Bill Walsh with 15 minutes left and Baker acquitted himself well on his first senior appearance for Spurs. Ramsey was still firmly ensconced as first choice right-back and Baker knew he had to bide his time if he was ever to establish himself. He might have expected to get his chance when Ramsey decided to take the manager’s job at Ipswich Town but while Baker was recognised as a player of enormous potential, the veteran Charlie Withers was initially given Ramsey’s old place. When big Maurice Norman was signed Baker had to be content with a role in the reserves and it was only when Norman was injured that Baker got another chance. This time he grabbed it with both hands. Showing calmness and confidence that belied his lack of top level experience, he did so well that when Norman was fit he could only get back in the team by switching to centrehalf. The emergence of Johnny Hills during the 1957/58 season put Baker’s place in jeopardy but he saw off the challenge and by the time Bill Nicholson was appointed manager in October, 1958, the number two shirt was once again Baker’s property. He kept it for another seven years, missing only one game in 1960/61 and very few more in the next three seasons as the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup were added to the Double. Baker and his full-back partner Ron Henry formed one of the best full-back partnerships of their time and were every bit as important to that successful team as the likes of Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay and Bobby Smith. Although well into his 30s, Baker looked as if he could go on for a few more years but the arrival of Cyril Knowles in May, 1964, as Nicholson began to build another trophy winning team, signalled the end of Baker’s Spurs career. Nicholson valued him enough to want him to stay but when the chance came of building a new life for himself in South Africa, Nicholson allowed Baker to leave. He emigrated in 1965 and initially played for Durban United. After playing he coached for a while before going into business, but sadly passed away in January 2016. Two of our players made their debuts on 14 April. Inside forward Frank Hartley made the first of his seven Spurs appearances in a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City in 1923, while 11 years later it was the turn of Alf Day, whose debut came in a 5-1 win against Manchester City at White Hart Lane. THFC 2 5 MAKING THEIR DEBUTS PAUL MILLER Defender Paul Miller was one of those no-nonsense players whose work in the trenches of top-flight football for Spurs allowed his team-mates renowned for flair and panache to go and do their stuff. Our reputation for cultured, attacking football provided by players who like to get the ball down and play would count for nothing without those hard, aggressive defenders behind them providing the solid base for the more talented to flourish upon. Miller was just such a player, a home-produced talent whose game was based on a whole-hearted approach and a never-say-die attitude. Like many of the younger players of the late 1970s and early 1980s Miller benefited greatly from a spell on loan to a Scandinavian club. He played for Skeid Oslo of Norway in their 1978 season and six months later was ready to make his League debut. It came in the hostile surrounds of Highbury on 10 April 1979 and if anyone was cut out for making their Spurs debut as a teenager at the home of your fiercest rivals, it was Paul. Unfortunately it ended in a 1-0 defeat for us, but Miller had shown enough to keep his place for six of our last seven fixtures of the season. Miller’s strength lie in the power of his tackling and his ability to dominate an opponent through pure physical effort. He slowly established himself in the first team but it was when he was paired at the centre of defence with Graham Roberts, a player similar in style, that he really began to make his mark. While the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles, Steve Archibald and Garth Crooks grabbed the headlines, Miller and Roberts formed an impenetrable barrier that did so much to help us win the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982, reach the League Cup Final in 1982 and win the UEFA Cup in 1984, when Miller headed the crucial away goal in the first leg of the Final against Anderlecht. While never likely to be the prettiest or most constructive of players, Miller’s raw commitment to the Spurs cause could never be faulted but his place in the team always seemed under threat with the signings of players such as Paul Price and Gary Stevens. A Spurs man through and through Miller saw off all the challenges until David Pleat signed Richard Gough and paired him with Gary Mabbutt at the centre of defence. That prompted Paul to move to Charlton Athletic and helped them retain their First Division status before moving on to finish his career in the lower divisions. The last player to make their Spurs debut in the month of April was DeAndre Yedlin. The USA international came off the bench with 11 minutes remaining of our Premier League clash with Aston Villa on 11 April 2015, which ended in a 1-0 defeat in N17. DID YOU KNOW? THFC The objects in our Tottenham Hotspur archive range in age, from as recent as the 2022 pre-season tour to a pre-1900s minutes book written by Bobby Buckle. This week’s object is some sheet music from 1901, a very early example of an FA Cup song being written, although this was written after we won the trophy rather than as part of the build up for a Final at Wembley. Other music in the collection includes a Chas and Dave vinyl of Ossie’s Dream and a VHS copy of a Music History with Alan Freeman; sometimes the objects we find in the collection have arrived there despite h a v i n g n o i m m e d i a t e relevance to the Club. The vinyl of Ossie’s Dream is the 45rpm single from April 1981 which charted at number five and had a B-Side of ‘Glory, Glory, Tottenham Hotspur’. The cover, like the cover of the Barn Dance sheet music, features a photo of the 1980/81 team, although this one would have been from prior to the Final at Wembley rather than from when we won. R e t u r n i n g t o t h e featured object…on the cover of this is a picture of the 1901 FA Cup-winning team, when we became the first and only non-league team to ever win the trophy. The photo can be found easily on the internet, but for some reason the photo differs from the original in that the two trainers have been edited out, as has the crowd, leaving only the players. The cover also has ‘To my friend J. Cameron esq.’ on the front; John Cameron being the captain who led the team to that famous victory and player-manager until 1907. After leaving us he worked as a sports journalist, before going to Germany to coach Dresdner FC until 1914, when the First World War broke out and he was interned at a civilian detention camp in Berlin. During his time at this camp, football became a popular past time for those interned and Cameron became prominent in the organisation and playing of football within the Ruhleben camp. Written for piano, the piece titled ‘The Tottenham Hotspur Barn Dance,’ was composed by a Frederick Harvey, of whom there is no other information about. The copyright for the music was held by W Saville & Co and there is also reference to J.B Cramer & Co on the cover. Whilst at present we do not know what this music would have sounded like, having the sheet music means it will be easy to find out and to attach a modern day recording to the historical record. As is often the aim with these archive dives, we hope this has shown you the interwoven nature of football history with the history of the wider world and the ways in which our club is linked to the wider events. If you at home have any Tottenham Hotspur related sheet music, our archivist would love to see it, so feel free to get in touch! 3 7 FROM THE VAULT HOTSPUR HISTORY HOTSPUR HISTORY Each issue, we’ll be delving into our club archives to look at just some of the objects and items which helped shape our history off the pitch and pick out a couple of past programmes against today’s opponents… JOIN THE CLUB THIS JULY easports.com/fc JOIN THE CLUB EASPORTS.COM/FC AD-240x172-EA-Join The Club.indd 1 04/04/2023 11:25 TH21_36-39_Hotspur_History 170 2.indd 38 12/04/2023 13:33

THFC HOTSPUR HISTORY 3 9 TAKING ISSUE A quick glance through a couple of previous matchday programmes against Bournemouth. Mourinho’s column as he spoke about our come-from-behind 4-2 win over Olympiakos in Champions League action, with one of our goalscorers that night – Serge Aurier – the subject of the main interview following his man-of-the-match performance. Articles included ‘One and Only’ – profiling a player who only played once for Spurs with Dickie Dowsett featured in this issue; ‘True Colours’ in which Kyle Walker-Peters discussed his favourite Spurs shirts; and ‘Back Post’, where John Fennelly detailed players who featured in his memories of Bournemouth. Eddie Howe was still in charge of the Cherries and this time their squad included Aaron Ramsdale, Nathan Ake, Harry Wilson, Callum Wilson and a certain Arnaut Danjuma. At the back of the issue, youngster Oliver Skipp was in the hotseat in our 1882 Q&A where we discovered he doesn’t believe in ghosts, his favourite cheese is mozzarella and he played a shepherd in the nativity play at school! We raced into a 3-0 lead on this occasion with Dele Alli (2) and M o u s s a S i s s o k o scoring, before Harry Wilson netted twice for the visitors. 2016 It wasn’t until 2016 that we first played Bournemouth in a competitive fixture at home, producing a 100-page programme for the Premier League fixture played on 20 March. Toby Alderweireld featured on the cover. We were five points behind leaders Leicester City going into the game with eight matches left to play and Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino said in his column: ‘…we must aim to win them all to make our dreams a reality.’ Among the features in this issue were an in-depth interview with Tom Carroll, who had made his senior debut against Bournemouth while on loan at Leyton Orient; ‘In Focus’ which was a photo gallery of Chris Hughton’s career at Spurs; ‘Visiting Great’ in which we spoke to Cherries legend Steve Fletcher; and ‘Pitch Battles’, where club historian John Fennelly recalled our FA Cup exit to Bournemouth back in 1957. The Cherries were profiled in ‘The Visitors’ section, with the likes of Sylvain Distin, Dan Gosling, Harry Arter, Josh King and Glenn Murray among those featured in Eddie Howe’s squad, while we also looked back at the career of Freddie Cox, who played for us and later managed Bournemouth. We also had interviews with former Spurs and Bournemouth midfielder Darren Anderton and Steven Caulker, while ‘Tracking Back’ examined what Clinton Njie and Tony Galvin were doing during this particular week in seasons gone by. We won this game 3-0, Harry Kane (2) and Christian Eriksen on target. 2019 Coincidentally, Toby Alderweireld also adorned the front cover of our match programme against Bournemouth for our game on 30 November 2019, the last time we met on home soil. 4 0 THFC SPURS WOMEN SPURS WOMEN Kerys Harrop is a Women’s Super League record breaker – no player has played more league games than her 178 – but that’s come as no surprise to those who played a part in her early career. The experienced Stourbridgeborn defender joined us from Birmingham City in July 2020 where she had spent 20 years, making her WSL debut against Bristol City in 2011. And, by featuring in our recent 2-1 defeat at Everton, she moved clear at the top of the league’s all-time appearance list. David Parker was Kerys’ coach at Birmingham when she scored her firstever goal in the competition – and the former FA Cup winner admits our number six’s goalscoring celebrations have not changed a bit in the 12 years since, remarking that she still has the ‘same old cheesy celebration’. “Kerys scored the winner against Lincoln City,” David recalls. “I always laugh that she was definitely a centrehalf because she had no idea how to celebrate!” During the same season, Kerys scored “an absolute worldie” against Everton, described by David as a half-volley from 40 yards out. “I took a throw-in,” Kez told us, “the ball got set back to me and I just drilled it with my laces and it flew into the top corner!” David continued: “Moving into the second season, Kerys went through a few evolutions of her development. Kez actually moved to left wing, so we had a frontline of Karen Carney, Eni Aluko, Jodie Taylor, Rachel Williams and Kerys. “We won the FA Cup and Kerys started that day. That just shows you where her ability was at – even as a young player, how much we trusted her as staff to perform in big moments in big games.” Kerys recalled: “Looking at me now, you’d think, ‘how did Kez play on the wing with her lack of pace?’ But I was a bit quicker then so I was able to contribute a bit more.” “Going into 2014, we lost some big names but we were in the semifinals of the Champions League,” David added. “We’d beaten Arsenal in the quarter-finals and we went to play against Tyreso from Sweden. It was an absolute all-star team. They were up there with Lyon.” Kerys led the backline, holding Tyreso to a 0-0 draw in the first leg, and playing 70 minutes of the second leg away from home without conceding a goal. Karen Carney was captain of the Blues that night. “I wouldn’t say she’s blessed with pace, but you very rarely see her get beat because she’s strong, her positional sense is really good and her work rate is really high,” Karen said. THFC 4 1 SPURS WOMEN predicted that Kez would go on to have such longevity in the WSL, playing more games than any other player? “The Super League was new and we told the girls that it was only licensed for two years,” David explained. “I don’t know how many people remember that, but it was only licensed from 2011 until 2013. “I was pretty confident that women’s football would take off. It was just a matter of time and how many years you want to put on it because it was going to boom, but in those first two years we told the girls to enjoy them because they might be the only two years you get in terms of a semi-professional/professional league. “The American league had all the money in the world and all the players, but they couldn’t make it work three times in a row and the league folded. To think about an appearance record in those first two years was probably the last thing on anyone’s mind. “Even going into 2013 or so, we only had eight teams in the league and it was a 14-game season, so to add up to almost 200 appearances now is a very different landscape to those first two years.” Our current Interim Head Coach Vicky Jepson recently described Kerys as someone who “can be the clown of the group; she likes to have a laugh and a joke. Sometimes you need people to be jesters and lighten the mood.” “I think she’s funny without knowing it as well,” David adds. “She’s got a Masters degree from good old Wolverhampton and a thick accent that goes with it. Even the intelligent things she says come across funny, so it’s a bit of give and take! “That character goes a long way. To have someone like that in the dressing room, she’s what we call a low-maintenance player and is wonderful to be around.” “She’s definitely got some good banter,” Karen agrees, “but equally she can be serious as well. There were times to knuckle down and do the simple things really well and Kez was really good at that. “It’s a massive asset to Spurs that she’s in your corner and I think she’s done a tremendous job. She comes up with some goals and is a threat from set-pieces, has a great left foot and is technically good. I think she’s had a brilliant career and it’s still not over, which is exciting.” “YOU VERY RARELY SEE HER GET BEAT BECAUSE SHE’S STRONG, HER POSITIONAL SENSE IS GOOD AND HER WORK RATE IS REALLY HIGH” - KAREN CARNEY FIXTURES WSL HOME FIXTURES PLAYED AT BRISBANE ROAD UNLESS STATED * PLAYED AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM ** CONTINENTAL TYRES LEAGUE CUP FIXTURES > FA CUP ^ LOST 5-4 ON PENALTIES DATE H/A OPPOSITION RES SEPTEMBER SUN 18 A LEICESTER CITY 2-1 SAT 24 A ARSENAL 0-4 OCTOBER SUN 2 A READING** 2-1 SUN 16 H LIVERPOOL 1-0 SAT 22 H MANCHESTER CITY 0-3 SUN 30 A BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 8-0 NOVEMBER SUN 20 A CHELSEA 0-3 SUN 27 H COVENTRY UNITED** 5-1 DECEMBER SUN 4 A READING 0-1 SUN 11 H WEST HAM UNITED 0-2 WED 14 H EVERTON 0-3 SUN 18 A SOUTHAMPTON** 1-0 JANUARY SAT 14 A ASTON VILLA 1-2 WED 25 H CHELSEA** 1-3 SUN 29 H LONDON CITY> 5-0 FEBRUARY SUN 5 H CHELSEA 2-3 SUN 12 H MANCHESTER UNITED* 1-2 SUN 26 H READING> 0-0^ MARCH SUN 5 A MANCHESTER CITY 1-3 SUN 12 A LIVERPOOL 1-2 WED 15 H LEICESTER CITY 1-0 SUN 26 H ARSENAL 1-5 APRIL SUN 2 A EVERTON 1-2 SUN 23 H ASTON VILLA 2PM SUN 30 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 2PM MAY SUN 7 A MANCHESTER UNITED 12PM SUN 21 H READING 2PM SUN 28 A WEST HAM UNITED 2PM P W D L F A D PTS MANCHESTER UNITED 17 13 2 2 46 9 +37 41 CHELSEA 16 13 1 2 42 14 +28 40 ARSENAL 16 12 2 2 40 10 +30 38 MANCHESTER CITY 17 12 2 3 35 16 +19 38 ASTON VILLA 17 9 2 6 32 28 +4 29 EVERTON 16 7 3 6 19 16 +3 24 WEST HAM UNITED 17 5 2 10 17 30 -13 17 LIVERPOOL 16 4 4 8 16 27 -11 16 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 7 4 0 13 20 36 -16 12 READING 17 3 2 12 19 38 -19 11 LEICESTER CITY 17 3 1 13 9 39 -30 10 BRIGHTON 15 2 3 10 18 50 -32 9 UP TO AND INCLUDING 02.04.23 KAREN CARNEY...BIRMINGHAM’S FORMER CAPTAIN AND TEAMMATE OF KERYS paste in league table from https://uk.soccerway.com/national/england/wsl/20222023/ regular-season/r69053/ TH21_40-41_Women 170.indd 41 12/04/2023 14:33

4 2 THFC UNDER-21S UNDER-21S HELD AT HOME BY WOLVES Jamie Donley’s thunderous strike was cancelled out by Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ty Barnett six minutes from time as our Under-21s were forced to share the spoils in a key battle in the lower reaches of the Premier League 2 table on Friday 7 April. After an uneventful display for much of the game with Nile John denied by goalkeeper Louie Moulden in our two best chances and Josh Keeley making a couple of important stops at the other end, we grabbed the lead in emphatic style on 78 minutes when Kallum Cesay ferried on Damola Ajayi’s cut-back for Donley to blast high into the net. But we couldn’t make the advantage stick and when substitute Josh Esen picked out Barnett in the box, the Wolves man slotted home to make it 1-1 as we missed the chance to leapfrog the visitors out of the relegation zone. Spurs: Keeley, Cassanova, Craig (c), Sayers (Dorrington 46), FaganWalcott, Bowden (Ajayi 70), Cesay, John, Soonsup-Bell (Williams 65), Donley, Santiago (Mathurin 90+1). Substitute (not used): Maguire. Wolves: Moulden, Lembikisa (Esen 77), Hubner, Tipton (c) (Kandola 83), Marques, Pond (Keto-Diyawa 83), Birtwistle, Hesketh, Fraser (Griffiths 65), Barnett, Farmer. Substitute (not used): Arinbjornsson. WAYNE DEMANDS MORE Under-21s Coach Wayne Burnett was disappointed with the performance of his players in last week’s draw with Wolves. He told SPURSPLAY after the game: “The first half was completely unlike us – we didn’t play with any energy, which was very disappointing. We were slightly better in the second half but I didn’t think we did enough to win the match and I’ve expressed that to the players. “I don’t think we threatened their goal enough, we didn’t show the characteristics that we’ve shown in previous games, we didn’t play with energy, didn’t play with enthusiasm, which we have done, so overall it was a game with little quality. We managed to score a goal but it’s disappointing that we conceded so quickly afterwards. With this game being held at Colchester, we’ve had a lot of people that have come in from the local area who are Tottenham Hotspur supporters and we’re disappointed that we couldn’t give a better account of ourselves.” BOWDEN’S DELIGHT AT RETURN TO ACTION Jamie Bowden spoke of his joy after returning from a long-term injury lay-off against Wolves last week. The 21-year-old midfielder had been out with an ankle injury since the second game of the Premier League 2 season in August but marked his comeback with a 70-minute stint in our 1-1 draw. THFC 4 3 UNDER-21S “It feels good,” he said. “It’s been a long eight months for me but I’ve had time off the pitch to work on things that I may not have had time to before, so hopefully I’m coming back stronger and fitter than I was previously. “My family and friends have helped me – I needed people to try to lift me back up. The physio staff, the sports science team – they’ve been with me every day and they’ve helped me too. Every day has been a battle but I’m happy to be back now. “In terms of my goals until the end of the season, I just think we need to pick up results – that’s the most important thing now. Everyone can see where we are in the table and that’s not where we want to be. There are games where we might have to grind out a result and I think we have to do that. We need to start winning games again for sure.” NEW DEAL FOR YAGO We announced this week that Yago Santiago has signed a new contract with the Club, which will run until 2024. The attacking midfielder joined our Academy in 2019 from hometown club Celta Vigo in Spain and has started every one of our Development Squad’s 25 games in all competitions so far this season, scoring six goals. The 19-year-old also made four appearances in the Under-19 UEFA Youth League earlier this term. 4 4 THFC UNDER-18S UNDER-18S DUO GO PRO We announced this week that Max McKnight and Jahziah Linton have signed their first professional contracts with the Club. Right-back Max, 18, has featured regularly for our Under-18s over the last two seasons, playing 20 times in all competitions at this level so far in 2022/23, including all five matches on our journey to the upcoming Under-18 Premier League Cup final. He also appeared in all six of our matches in the Under-19 UEFA Youth League this term and stepped up to make his debut for the Under-21s in a Papa John’s Trophy clash with Peterborough United back in September. Left-back Jahziah has also been a regular starter in our Under-18 side over the last two seasons. The 18-year-old left-back has made 19 appearances in all competitions for Stuart Lewis’ team so far in 2022/23, and played three times in the UEFA Youth League. Congratulations to both Max and Jahziah! ALL SQUARE AGAINST SEAGULLS Brighton & Hove Albion scored at the end of each half to secure a share of the spoils as our Under-18s twice allowed a deserved lead to slip through their fingers at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre on Wednesday 5 April. Having seen Jaden Williams’ second converted penalty in as many games cancelled out by Remeiro Moulton on the stroke of half-time, we responded well after the interval and regained the advantage through Oliver Irow’s angled volley, with Rio Kyerematen subsequently denied a third by a stunning save from Seagulls goalkeeper Tommy Reid. Unfortunately we didn’t learn our lesson the first time around and were punished six minutes from time when Kain Ryan rose unmarked at a corner to head home for 2-2. Brighton could even have stolen maximum points at the end but Moulton curled their best effort just wide. Spurs: Gunter (c), Andiyapan (Morgan 85), Linton, Dorrington, Chaplin, Kyerematen, Irow, Hall (James 85), Williams (McKnight 65), Ajayi, Akhamrich (Willhoft-King 65). Substitute (not used): Rowswell. CUP FINAL DATES CONFIRMED Our Academy will face Aston Villa in the Under-18 Premier League Cup final at Villa Park on Thursday 4 May, kick-off 7pm. Stuart Lewis’ side qualified for the showpiece match after a dramatic late victory at Sheffield United in the semi-finals, where midfielder Rio Kyerematen netted an 89th-minute winner. We have also reached this season’s Under-17 Premier League Cup final, where we’re set to face Nottingham Forest. That match will be held at the City Ground on Wednesday 19 April, kick-off 7pm. It is the second time in as many years that our Under-17s have reached the final of this competition. Both matches will be shown live on SPURSPLAY. MORE EXPERIENCE FOR ELLIOT Under-18s goalkeeper Elliot Krasniqi has recently been out on another spell of ‘work experience’ in non-league. The shot stopper has been playing for local Southern League Division One Central side Waltham Abbey. Back in February, Elliot had a similar stint playing for Abbey’s league rivals, Hertford Town. THFC 4 5 UNDER-18S Here in the matchday programme, we give you a chance to get to know our latest intake of first-year Under-18s players. Today, we meet ZACH SIMONS… Name: Zach Simons. Position: Right-back. Born: 28 November, 2005, in Leyton. Last school: Forest School in Walthamstow. When did you first join Spurs? “I first arrived in the Under-8s and was signed in the Under-9s.” Who do you like to watch in training? “I’d say Cristian Romero and Harry Kane. I like Romero’s aggression, while on the ball he’s quite calm. Kane is very creative and he obviously scores goals and wins matches.” If you could meet someone famous, who would it be and why? “It would probably be Lewis Hamilton. I’ve been watching F1 since I was younger and he’s quite a good role model to look up to.” Favourite food? “Jerk chicken with rice and peas.” Any achievements you’re particularly proud of? “I used to do athletics in school. I was the Waltham Forest borough champion for hurdles in year eight.” If you couldn’t be a footballer, what would you like to be instead? “A pilot. When I was younger I was really fascinated by the idea of flying planes.” GETTING TO KNOW… ZACH SIMONS FIXTURES & RESULTS DATE H/A OPPOSITION AUGUST SAT 13 A LEICESTER CITY 1-0 SAT 20 H WEST BROMWICH ALBION 1-2 SAT 27 A ARSENAL 1-4 SEPTEMBER SAT 3 A LIVERPOOL (U18 PLC) 3-1 WED 7 H MARSEILLE (UYL) 3-0 TUE 13 A SPORTING CP (UYL) 0-2 SAT 17 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 3-0 OCTOBER SAT 1 A ASTON VILLA 4-2 TUE 4 A EINTRACHT FRANKFURT (UYL) 0-1 SAT 8 H WOLVES (U18 PLC) 3-3 WED 12 H EINTRACHT FRANKFURT (UYL) 2-3 SAT 22 A FULHAM 0-6 WED 26 H SPORTING CP (UYL) 1-2 NOVEMBER TUE 1 A MARSEILLE (UYL) 3-2 SAT 5 A CHARLTON ATH (U18PLC) 5-1 SAT 19 H CHELSEA 1-2 SAT 26 A CRYSTAL PALACE 3-1 TUE 29 H NORWICH CITY 3-0 DECEMBER SAT 3 A WEST HAM UNITED 3-4 TUE 20 H QPR (FAYC) 1-3 JANUARY SAT 7 H ASTON VILLA 3-0 SAT 28 A CHELSEA 2-2 FEBRUARY SAT 4 A MAN CITY (PLC) 1-0 SAT 18 A SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 SAT 25 H WEST HAM UNITED 1-3 MARCH SAT 4 H CRYSTAL PALACE 4-2 SAT 11 A SHEFFIELD UNITED (PLC) 1-0 SAT 18 H ARSENAL 3-2 APRIL SAT 1 A NORWICH CITY 4-0 WED 5 A BRIGHTON 2-2 WED 12 H SOUTHAMPTON 1PM SAT 15 H FULHAM 11AM SAT 22 A WEST BROMWICH ALBION 12PM SAT 29 H LEICESTER CITY 11.30AM MAY THU 4 A ASTON VILLA (PLC) 7PM UP TO AND INCLUDING 05.04.23 P W D L F A D PTS WEST HAM 19 16 0 3 67 29 +38 48 CRYSTAL PALACE 19 11 3 5 55 36 +19 36 FULHAM 17 10 3 4 53 26 +27 33 TOTTENHAM 18 10 2 6 40 32 +8 32 CHELSEA 17 9 2 6 43 34 +9 29 BRIGHTON 19 7 5 7 28 40 -12 26 LEICESTER 17 7 1 9 26 35 -9 22 ARSENAL 18 5 4 9 38 41 -3 19 SOUTHAMPTON 17 5 3 9 32 45 -13 18 WEST BROM 16 4 3 9 20 31 -11 15 ASTON VILLA 18 4 3 11 34 57 -23 15 NORWICH CITY 19 3 3 13 23 53 -30 12 TH21_44-45_Academy 170.indd 45 12/04/2023 11:44
