THFC 5 9 SPURS ON FILM TELEVISION MAGAZINE SHOWS On our screens since August 2006, the BBC One series The One Show is a current example of a television ‘magazine show’ – a programme that covers a variety of stories every episode ranging from light-hearted topics to serious issues and/or current news events. Many magazine programmes, including The One Show, also feature live and/or prerecorded interviews. The One Show was originally launched on a four-week trial basis back in 2006, with the pilot programme presented by Adrian Chiles and Nadia Sawalha. Having achieved positive viewing figures during that period, the show returned for a full series in July 2007. Broadcast live on BBC One each weekday at 7pm, The One Show was billed by former Guardian journalist Matt Wells as “the modern-day successor to Nationwide” – Nationwide being a magazine show that was broadcast on the BBC between 1969 and 1983. Our former midfielder Jermaine Jenas, who scored 26 times in 202 appearances for us between 2005 and 2013, was given the opportunity to be a guest host of The One Show for the first time in September 2020. By this point in his broadcasting career, Jenas – who announced his retirement from playing in January 2016 – was working regularly as a football pundit for the likes of the BBC, ITV and BT Sport while his also presented a 2017 BBC Three documentary called Teenage Knife Wars, which focused on knife-crime in his home town of Nottingham. He has also hosted the BBC Match of the Day spin-off magazine show MOTDx since With the 2022/23 season marking the launch of SPURSPLAY – the Club’s new home of exclusive live and on-demand video – Andy Greeves takes a look at the ways in which Tottenham Hotspur, our players and managers have featured in television, film and advertising over the years. The series continues today with a look at television magazine shows. FORMER SPUR JERMAINE JENAS IS A REGULAR CO-HOST OF THE ONE SHOW TH21_58-61_Spurs_on_Film 170 2.indd 59 12/04/2023 11:16

6 0 THFC SPURS ON FILM its launch in September 2019. After regularly appearing as a guest presenter, it was announced in April 2021 that Jenas – along with former Boyzone star Ronan Keating – would be the first permanent co-hosts to be appointed on the programme in over a decade. Commenting at the time, Jenas said; “I’ve absolutely loved being a part of The One Show, (fellow presenter) Alex (Jones), the team and the viewers have made me feel so welcome and we’ve had a lot of fun already - I’m really looking forward to joining as a full-time host alongside Ronan.” A number of our former players have been guests on The One Show over the years, including Peter Crouch – who has been interviewed no less than eight occasions on the show to date! Back in March 2021, he spoke to Jenas and Alex Jones about the launch of the fifth series of That Peter Crouch Podcast while he returned later in the year to discuss his show Crouchy’s Year-Late Euros: Live. O u r fo r m e r m a n a g e r H a r r y Redknapp is another regular The One Show guest, with six appearances to date. On two of those occasions Harry was accompanied by son Jamie – our former skipper, who scored four goals in 49 matches for us between 2002 and 2008, to discuss their joint television projects Jamie & Harry’s World Cup Challenge: Got, Got Need and Redknapp’s Big Night Out. Other ex-Spurs players to grace The One Show include Jimmy Greaves, Gary Lineker and Les Ferdinand. Since January 2015, the FA Cup draw has been performed during The One Show on an occasional basis. Our former striker Teddy Sheringham was involved in the fifth round draw on the show in January 2020, as we landed a home tie against Norwich City. The One Show has also shown some interesting historical features with a Spurs theme. In February 2011, Ruth Goodman told the story of our ‘double’-winning captain Danny Blanchflower’s life and Belfast upbringing. That same year, historian Dan Snow told the story of our former half-back Walter Tull, who scored twice in 10 appearances for us between 1909 and 1911, becoming just the second black footballer to ply his trade in the top flight of English league football in the process. During World War I, Tull served in the two Football Battalions of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment, the 17th and 23rd, and also in the 5th Battalion. He rose to the rank of lance sergeant and, later, second lieutenant before he was killed in action near the village of Favreuil in the Pas-de-Calais on 25 March, 1918 during the First Battle of Bapaume, aged just 29. L a u n c h e d i n O c t o b e r 1 9 8 8 , This Morning is one of the UK’s longest running daytime magazine programmes and is currently broadcast every weekday on ITV between 10am and 12.30pm. A number of our former players have appeared on the show including our ex-skipper Gary Mabbutt, who spoke to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield back in November 2020 about the vast number of phone calls he made to elderly and vulnerable Spurs supporters in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Peter Crouch has also been on the show as he discussed a Discovery Plus television show called Save Our Beautiful Game, which focused on his efforts to help save former club Dulwich Hamlet from administration, and joining the judging panel of The Masked Dancer. Harry Redknapp and his wife Sandra went on This Morning last September to talk about their book, When Harry Met Sandra. Launched in April 2014, Good Morning Britain (often abbreviated to GMB) is broadcast on ITV every weekday morning between 6am and 9am. Incorporating national and regional news bulletins, the magazine show also has interviews and features on various topics. Harry Kane was interviewed by Susanna Reid and then-host Piers Morgan in November 2020 about his support for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and also discussed the Prime Video series All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur. Peter Crouch has been on GMB a number of times, discussing his signature ‘robot’ goal celebration and his hosting role on the Prime Video series Back of the Net alongside John Bishop and Gabby Logan – daughter of former Spurs midfielder, Terry Yorath. Many congratulations to TERRY CONWAY, who not only celebrates his 93rd birthday this month but this season also marks his 80th year of coming to watch Spurs games! His first match was a Southern League Cup game on Saturday 20 March in 1943, when beat Millwall 5-1. He first got a season ticket seat for the start of the ‘Double’ season, in the old East Stand and he now sits with his children and grandchildren in the East Upper. WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND OUR CONDOLENCES TO THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS AT THIS SAD TIME. ANDREW BAKER, a top consultant surgeon who was sadly killed in a car accident in South Africa on 4 February. A lifelong fan who used to watch the team train in the 1960s from the banks of the canal at the old training ground, his grandad was a groundsman for the club all those years ago. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. ANN SHIP, who passed away on 21 March, aged 86. A lifelong fan whose affection for the club only grew when she moved to within a stone’s throw of the Lane and could hear the roar of the crowd whenever we scored. She will be dearly missed by her two daughters, grandchildren and all her family. Lifelong fan KEN NIGHTINGALE, who sadly passed away aged 88. Living in Harlow in the late 1950s and early 60s, he would ride his motor scooter up to the ground with younger brother Alan on the back to see their heroes in action. His favourite players were Tommy Harmer, Danny Blanchflower and Jimmy Greaves. Although he moved to Brighton in later years, he attended games whenever he could. JOHN STANLEY ELDRIDGE, who passed away on 21 March at the age of 78. A lifelong fan and a season ticket holder for all of his childhood and into his young adulthood, he fought a relatively short fight with lung cancer and even whilst he was in lots of discomfort in the last few weeks, he always wanted to keep up to date with all of the Spurs scores. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. BRYONY CONDLIFFE, who sadly passed away on 6 March, aged 38. A wife, mother, sister and friend, her attitude throughout life was ‘Audere est Facere’. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. BARRY HARRIS, from Dursley, Gloucestershire, who passed away on 5 March, aged 76. He was a home and away season ticket holder before he became unwell and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. PETER BROWN, who passed away on 11 March, aged 61. He was a loyal fan since the 1970s who travelled home and away and will be missed by all his family along with his Spurs family of supporters. He leaves behind wife Mandy, daughters Emily and Mollie, his grandchildren, along with his mum Pat, sister Angie and brother Pierson, who are season ticket holders in the North Stand. MARTIN POILE, who passed away on 18 March at the age of 71. A long-time season ticket holder, he had been watching our game against Southampton with friends on the day he died. He was a true gentleman, well-known and respected and will be sadly missed by his wife Cathy and their daughters and grandchildren, as well as his many friends. MICHAEL GERARD, a man who only lived for his family, Spurs and Middlesex CCC. A renal dialysis patient for over 46 years, but despite his affliction he still came to most home games for over 60 seasons. He leaves behind seven avid Spurs fans – three sons, three grandsons and his loving wife Jackie. THFC 6 9 THE ROAD TO HISTORY THE ROAD TO HISTORY For the second successive season, we had progressed to the semi-finals of a major European competition but this time, we were determined to go one step further and reach the final. We suffered despair and heartbreak 12 months earlier when we lost 3-4 on aggregate to Benfica in the semi-finals of the European Cup in our first-ever foray in Europe and that disappointment no doubt fuelled the burning desire inside Bill Nicholson and his players to go one better this time around. For Benfica, read OFK Belgrade, the Yugoslavian side standing between ourselves and a place in the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. Eastern Europe had been something of a mystery when we travelled to Poland for our first-ever European match against Gornik in September 1961, but here we were again, heading east across the continent for the fourth time in seven rounds of European competition. DANGEROUS OPPONENTS We had never before faced a team from Yugoslavia and OFK Belgrade were certainly tough opponents. The club was founded shortly after the Second World War and quickly forged their way in their domestic game, starting to rival the likes of city neighbours Red Star and Partizan, along with other famous Yugoslav clubs of the time, Dynamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. Third in the Yugoslav National L e a g u e w h e n w e a r r i v e d i n B e l g r a d e , t h e y h a d d e f e a t e d This season marks the 60th anniversary of our history-making team of 1962/63, who became the first British side to win silverware in Europe when we lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup trophy. 7 0 THFC THE ROAD TO HISTORY Ten days before our first game against OFK, Nurnberg and Atletico Madrid met in Germany for their first leg with a place in the Rotterdam final up for grabs. The game was staged at the Städtisches Stadion (Municipal Stadium) in the German town, with Welsh referee Clive Kingston in charge in front of a 44,140-strong crowd. And it was the visitors who drew first blood when midfielder Miguel Jones – who had scored in Atletico’s Cup Winners’ Cup Final victory against Fiorentina the previous year – opened the scoring on 24 minutes. The home side didn’t have to wait long to equalise though. Just six minutes later, Tasso Wild made it 1-1 and the midfielder SEMI-FINAL FIRST LEG SUMMARY Chemie Halle of East Germany, Portadown from Northern Ireland and Italian giants Napoli to reach the last four of this competition. But perhaps their most impressive result that season was a 2-1 friendly defeat of the Bulgarian national side, a team which knocked France out of the 1962 World Cup the previous summer. GREAVSIE OFF IN STORMY CLASH The draw for the semi-finals had been made before OFK and Napoli had met in their quarter-final playoff, which allowed Bill Nicholson the opportunity to attend that game to scout our potential opponents. What he discovered was an OFK side that was ultra-defensive and did whatever they could to prevent Napoli from playing their usual game, so we had an idea what to expect in our tie! In front of a partisan crowd of almost 45,000 at the Army Stadium in Belgrade, OFK didn’t disappoint. It was a stormy match with tackles flying in from both sets of players as well as a number of flash points which led to mass brawls breaking out at various moments in the game. Without the injured Danny Blanchflower and Cliff Jones, John Smith and Terry Dyson were drafted in to the side with Jimmy Greaves unusually playing outside right. On a warm April night, we started brightly but the game took an ugly turn just after the 20-minute mark. Bobby Smith was fouled on the edge of the area and as players gathered for the resulting free-kick, Smith appeared to clash with Dragoljub Maric, who ended up motionless on the ground. According to one newspaper report: ‘Players tore into each other, throwing punches.’ Once the dust settled, Tony Marchi flicked the free-kick across to Smith and he set the ball up for John White to fire home left-footed before the home defenders could even move. Ten minutes later though, OFK levelled when Dave Mackay was penalised for handball in the area and Milorad Popov slotted in the spot-kick. It was a niggly affair throughout, BILL NICHOLSON PUTS HIS PLAYERS THROUGH THEIR PACES AHEAD OF OUR SEMI-FINAL CLASH WITH OFK TH21_68-71_Road_to_History 170.indd 70 12/04/2023 13:39

THFC 7 1 THE ROAD TO HISTORY reaching fever pitch 10 minutes into the second half. Play was out on the left flank when suddenly, Hungarian referee Lajos Aranyossy blew his whistle and marched over to Greaves and OFK defender Blagomir Krivokuca before pointing towards the dressing room and sending off Greaves. In his autobiography, Greaves admitted that both he and Krivokuca had swung a punch at each other, both had missed but the referee spotted Jimmy’s attempt and subsequently sent him off! In such a hostile atmosphere and against such a determined opponent, it could have been a moment that ended our European hopes. Instead, it galvanised the 10 men and we stepped up a level, not only providing a solid rearguard action but also snatching a vital winner. With 20 minutes left, White delivered a cross from the right, Smith climbed with goalkeeper Blagoje Vidinic and forced him into fumbling the ball, allowing Dyson the opportunity to drive it into the net. As a footnote to his dismissal, Greaves wrote in his autobiography: ‘As my team-mates celebrated victory, I sat drinking a cup of tea, feeling very down. ‘It’s your own fault,’ said Cecil Poynton (the club’s trainer), ‘you ain’t got no business being sent off…too right that you feel disgraced with yourself. You’re the first Spurs player to be sent off since 1928. You’ve blemished the good reputation of this fine club.’ I felt awful. ‘Who was the last Spurs player to be sent off then, back in 1928?’ I asked, for want of anything better to say. ‘Me,’ replied Cecil! 7 2 THFC 100 CLUB NO 6 V STOKE CITY 10.09.16 Stoke City is traditionally a tough away fixture, but we blew the Potters away 4-0 early in the 2016/17 season, with Sonny netting twice. His first was good enough, a lovely side-footed volley from Christian Eriksen’s ball but his second was magnificent. Again the Dane was the creator, rolling a pass into Son down the inside left channel and he hit a superb right-foot curler into the top corner. It’s a finish we’ve seen plenty of times since! NO 1 V CRYSTAL PALACE 20.09.15 After joining us from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015, Sonny enjoyed a series of ‘firsts’ in his opening three Spurs games. His first appearance was at Sunderland on 13 September and his first goal followed four days later, with a Europa League brace against Qarabag. Then came his first Premier League goal, a left foot finish that beat Palace goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and won us the game at White Hart Lane. NO 2 V WATFORD 28.12.15 Despite three goals in his opening two games in our colours, Sonny took a while to find his feet and Premier League goal number two didn’t come for another three months. But it was a key one – coming in the last minute away to Watford with the scores locked at 1-1. Kieran Trippier clipped over a cross and Son produced a cheeky back-heel which went through former Spur Heurelho Gomes’ legs and in to spark great scenes in the away end. THE SON HUNDRED CLUB! Heung-Min Son confirmed his place in the Premier League ‘100 Club’ when he scored a sensational goal against Brighton last weekend to mark his century of goals in the competition. To celebrate our South Korean’s excellent achievement, we’ve picked out 10 of his best – and that certainly wasn’t easy! TH21_72-73_Son_100.indd 72 12/04/2023 13:41

THFC 7 3 100 CLUB NO 9 V SWANSEA CITY 03.12.16 Something quite different this one, as Sonny showed great dexterity to fire home an acrobatic scissor kick off his right foot in front of the South Stand at White Hart Lane. Eriksen’s shot cannoned off a Swansea defender and fell nicely for Son to produce another moment of magic in our 5-0 win. NO 25 V WEST HAM UNITED 04.01.18 Sonny’s not renowned for long-range blasters, but that’s what he produced against the Hammers at Wembley in January 2018. He received Erik Lamela’s pass 40 yards from goal and, as no-one came out to challenge from the visitors, Son took aim and drilled home a 25-yard right-foot rocket that flew past Adrian. NO 31 V CHELSEA 24.11.18 We had to wait until late November for Son’s first league goal of the 2018/19 campaign, but it was worth it. Already leading Chelsea 2-0 at Wembley, Sonny latched onto Dele Alli’s ball down the right flank and left Jorginho in his wake as he burst into the box, skipped past David Luiz and slotted home a superb solo goal in our 3-1 win. NO 47 V BURNLEY 07.12.19 Without doubt, Sonny’s best goal in a Spurs shirt and it’s unlikely he’s scored a better one throughout his career. Leading Burnley 2-0 at the time, Son picked the ball up two yards outside his own penalty box and off he went, putting on the burners to speed away from two defenders before skipping his way past another two challenges. Then, with just Nick Pope to beat, he showed all the composure needed to slide the ball home for a stunning goal. It was so good, it won the FIFA Puskas Award. NO 63 V ARSENAL 06.12.20 A north London goal to remember, the only sad part was that only 2,000 fans were at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to see it as it came during lockdown. Just 13 minutes in, Sonny advanced down the left without a challenge in sight from an Arsenal player, allowing him to drift inside and curl the most sumptuous 25-yard right-foot effort beyond the dive of Bernd Leno to open the scoring. We went on to win 2-0. NO 94 V LEICESTER CITY 17.09.22 It’s no secret that this has been a difficult season for Sonny. Having won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22, it just wasn’t happening for him in front of goal in the early weeks of this campaign and he was named among our substitutes for the visit of Leicester City in September. Entering the game on the hour mark, Sonny looked like he had a point to prove – and promptly fired in a 13-minute hat-trick! His first was the pick of the bunch, taking Rodrigo Bentancur’s pass and turning Jonny Evans and Wout Faes this way and that before hammering home from 25 yards out. NO 100 V BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 08.04.23 It may have taken a while this season to hit the 100-goal mark in the Premier League, but there’s no doubting the quality of Sonny’s milestone strike. His right-foot curlers are a regular feature of his century and this one was up there with the best of them. To be honest, everyone probably knew what he was going to do when collecting the ball in the inside left position but stopping him is another matter altogether. Brighton certainly couldn’t, as he came infield and stroked the ball into the top right-hand corner – the perfect way to hit his ton. TH21_72-73_Son_100.indd 73 12/04/2023 13:41

THFC 8 1 T H E D A LY C O L U M N Our SPURSPLAY commentator ROB DALY dissects Heung-Min Son’s recent landmark… THE DALY COLUMN n e o f m y fa vo u r i t e things about doing our SPURSPLAY pitchside show after home games, is getting the players to watch their goals back. Often still wearing grass-stained kit, there’s always an attempt to conceal a smile for fear of seeming too proud when their strike is replayed in front of them on our propped-up monitor. That is except for Heung-Min Son, last Saturday. The South Korean didn’t want to hide his delight as he broke down his sensational opener against Brighton – a 100th Premier League goal. “It’s not bad, is it?” he joked, seeing it for the first time on TV. “It was amazing to be honest…it was a beautiful angle from my view!” It’s a familiar sight by now too at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Spurs’ number seven cutting inside and whipping a curling shot into the top, far corner. Like Arjen Robben’s similar, signature move, Son from 20 to 25 yards out counts as a legitimate goalscoring opportunity. He admitted, to presenter Ben Haines and I, that defenders have become wiser to it, while also explaining that in the current system, there’s a greater need for him to get into the box and leave the wing-backs alone out wide, one v one, with opposition defenders. Regardless, Son has scored four goals like this in 2022/23, including two of his three in the 6-2 win over Leicester – one with his right foot, one with his left. With the man himself in front of me, it was worth checking again for research purposes: “You are right footed, aren’t you?” I asked. “I was born right-footed, but I’ve practiced more left-footed,” revealed Sonny. “Even the players at the training ground are confused sometimes during a finishing session. ‘Sonny – you’ve got a better left-foot’!” His Brighton goal was particularly good. Son, himself, felt it was similar to his Golden Boot-winning finish at Norwich last season. Given the angle from which I saw it, his remarkable curler in a 2-0 home win over Arsenal came to mind. “Scoring my 100th goal in this position, where I love to shoot…makes it a special moment.” Yes, a century of Premier League strikes may just be a number. H o w e ve r, l i ke H a r r y Ka n e ’s r e c o r d - b r e a k i n g g o a l a g a i n s t Manchester City, milestones are always a nice moment to reflect upon what a player has achieved. Only 34 players have scored 100 goals in the Premier League era, and there seemed to be genuine disbelief in Son’s voice that he is the first Asian player to achieve it. More broadly, there’s a case to be made that he’s the greatest player from Asia that English football has ever seen. Coupled with that, Sonny is one of the nicest and friendliest people you’ll meet – a joy to interview. He’s been refreshingly candid about how difficult this season has been for him. But now, into the run-in, Champions League qualification is the objective. “Scoring, not scoring – I don’t care. It’s very important we win…that’s the most important thing for the last eight games,” he said. When Ben jokingly asked if he could score three or more like his Brighton stunner this season, Sonny laughed, replying “I’d love that!” Don’t put it past him. Spurs need everything Son’s got, in the fight for top four. OUR NUMBER SEVEN WAS DELIGHTED TO HIT HIS CENTURY O TH21_80-81_Column 170.indd 81 12/04/2023 14:38
