HOLA,
CRISTIAN!

Summer arrival CRISTIAN
ROMERO discusses the reasons
behind his move to N17, his
footballing journey so far as
well as his hopes and aspirations
for his Spurs career.

By Liam Carson

A C ristian Romero believes the presence
of familiar faces are sure to help him
THFC settle quickly in north London.
A defender who joined us last Friday from
Atalanta, having spent the last three years in
Italy after leaving his homeland of Argentina,
Cristian is anticipating another huge change
to his life as he embarks on his journey with us
in N17. However, in knowing a few of his new
team-mates already, the 23-year-old is hoping to
swiftly bed in.

To change countries and cultures is always
going to be a major upheaval for any person
but, when you have the benefit of joining friends
who have already made and experienced such a
switch, it can make life much easier.

Having played alongside compatriot Giovani
Lo Celso for the Argentina national team,
Cristian revealed that Gio played a significant

That was great and thankfully I could come here.”

Cristian’s arrival in north London comes after
an exceptional last 12 months for the highly-rated
player.

Having initially struggled after leaving
his homeland of Argentina to sign for Italian
outfit Genoa in 2018, he soon thrived in Serie
A. His impressive performances on the Liguria
coast – where he played alongside former Spur
Sandro – quickly earned him a move to Italian
giants Juventus. After signing for the 36-time
Serie A champions though, he immediately
returned to Genoa on loan before moving out
again on a temporary basis last season as he
joined Atalanta.

“I STARTED

FOOTBALL AT
FIVE YEARS

OLD, AND
EVERYTHING
THAT I’M LIVING
RIGHT NOW, IT
EXCEEDS MY
EXPECTATIONS”

In Bergamo, he starred. Making 42 appear-
ances in his sole campaign with the Nerazzurri, he
helped the rising Lombardy club to qualify for the
Champions League for a third successive season
with another third-place finish while he also
helped them to the Coppa Italia Final and the last
16 of the Champions League. His performances
last term saw him named as 'Best Defender' in
the Italian top-flight.

He then went to his first major international
tournament with Argentina this summer for
the 2021 Copa America. Cristian had only made
his debut for his country in June yet, just over a
month later, he was helping La Albiceleste end
a 28-year wait for silverware as they stunned
Brazil at their Maracana home to take the Copa
America title.

“I started playing football at five years old, and
everything that I’m living right now, it exceeds my
expectations,” he explained. “It’s unbelievable. I’ve
20

dreamt about this since I was a kid, but I would
never have thought about getting to this point.
“In Italy, it was tough at the beginning because
I was far away from my friends and family, but I
was lucky because my wife was there to help
and after she came, she helped me to focus on
the pitch and be calm outside so I could start to
enjoy playing again.
“Last season was a great year for me individ-
ually. Thanks to Atalanta I’ve improved my game
and I’ve made a huge jump in my career. Then the
Copa America was incredible.
“As I’ve said before, all these things are amaz-
ing, I’ve dreamt about playing in a great squad like
we had in Argentina. Playing with those players
and having the chance to win with Leo (Lionel
Messi), Kun (Sergio Aguero), (Nicolas) Otamendi
and (Angel) Di María who were trying to win
something for my country. I’m so very pleased
for the team, but also for them.”
But now, just over a month on from that
success in Rio de Janeiro, Cristian’s attention
has quickly turned to the new challenge that lies
in front of him in north London.
Eager to get started in a Spurs shirt, the
coveted defender is determined to show his
best in his new colours and help the team push
forward.

“I HOPE TO PAY
BACK ALL THE
CONFIDENCE
THAT THE CLUB

HAS IN ME”

That could begin this afternoon as we
welcome Manchester City to Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium to kick-off our 2021/22 season. It also
marks the start of a new dawn for the Club as
Nuno Espirito Santo leads us in his first Premier
League game as our Head Coach.

“I knew that this project was ideal for me and
I want to help inside and outside the pitch,” our
new number four discussed. “It’s a great Club with
a great history so we must keep building on that. I
hope to pay back all the confidence that the club
has in me, and I will try to show that on the field.

“I think that this is a great league. I’ve always
watched games from the Premier League
because the level is amazing. There are great
clubs, we have to face City in the first game today
and I’m hoping that we can have a great start for
the season.”
