process of his own.
Having endured a tough campaign last term

as he struggled for minutes on the pitch, over the
summer Dele put that frustrating year behind
him, knuckled down and focussed on preparing
himself for the new season.

Feeling like he had lost some of his sharpness
– an attribute which he prides himself on – with
a lack of game time over the last year, he used
the close season to concentrate all his efforts on
not just regaining his fitness to levels he could be
content with but he went further, pushing himself
harder than ever before in his pre-season training
regime.

It meant that by the time players began to
return to Hotspur Way in early July, the England
international was already raring to go for the new
campaign and eager to impress new manager
Nuno Espirito Santo.

“Fitness is big for me. In the summer I was
working a lot. I knew I needed to improve on my
fitness from last season so it’s something I took
seriously, and I want to build my strength back up
and get fitter,” he explained. “I think, last season,
my fitness levels dropped more than I would have
wanted them to, obviously due to not playing and
stuff.

‘I didn’t feel like I was where I should be,

that – long-distance running and being able to

maintain my stamina for a long time. I felt like,
with the amount I played last season, fitness is
something I lost a lot of.

“Coming into the new season, I wanted to
make sure I was fit, strong and ready to go. I
think the way that the modern game is, we want
to be able to press, to work hard and maintain the
same physical performance throughout a game,
and that takes a lot of energy and a lot of stamina
which makes fitness a key part of how we want
to move going forwards. Obviously, it’s not easy
and it takes time, so I’m still building on it now,
but I feel good.

“NUMBER

I ENJOY
PLAYING.
IT’S NOT
SOMETHING
THAT’S NEW TO
ME THOUGH”

“And I think, when your mind’s clear, you’re THFC
playing, you’re winning, it is easier to be happy.
Last season was tough, more because it was
something that I wasn’t used to. When I first broke
into the team at MK Dons, I was always playing
and when I joined here it didn’t take that long for
me to be in the starting XI and it was probably
something that I took for granted, a little bit.

“Last season was difficult, but it showed me a
completely different side to myself as a person,
and I came out of it well. I just have to stay
focussed now, keep working hard and keep doing
my best for the team.”

Dele’s impressive fitness levels and renewed
vigour have certainly shown so far this season,
especially with the England international having
been deployed primarily in the ‘box-to-box’
number eight role – a stark change from the
number 10 role in which Spurs fans will have
become accustomed to seeing him shine.
However, for the boy from Milton Keynes, playing
in the centre of the park is something he grew
up doing having progressed through the ranks
at former club MK Dons in that role. It was only
when he arrived in north London back in 2015
20

Dele

that he began operating off the shoulder of the
centre forward.

“Number eight is a position I enjoy playing.
It’s not something that’s new to me though,”
the 25-year-old said. “When I signed here, I had
never played in the number 10 role. So, for me,
it is quite natural to play there, and I enjoy being
there.

“I think when you’re with a team like
Tottenham, you’re happy to be anywhere on the
pitch so wherever I play, I will do my best and
hopefully that’s enough.”

“WHEN
YOU’RE WITH
A TEAM LIKE
TOTTENHAM,

YOU’RE
HAPPY TO BE
ANYWHERE ON
THE PITCH”

THFC Moved back into the heart of our
midfield by Nuno, Dele has been pleased with
the team’s early work under our new boss.
Coming back for pre-season, the midfielder
admits that, while the players didn’t quite know
what to expect from the Portuguese coach as
they returned to Hotspur Way, the early signs
have been promising – especially with Nuno
picking up the Premier League Manager of the
Month award for August. However, with just
four league games played so far this season, our
number 20 knows there’s still much work to be
done by the squad.

“He’s done a brilliant job,” he smiled as he
reflected on Nuno’s start to life in N17. “We all
came into training for pre-season not knowing
exactly what to expect with a new manager
coming in. Normally, when a new manager arrives,
it’s exciting, but it’s usually off the back of a bad
run of form or the team not doing well. It gives
the team a boost and it’s a new way of thinking,
of looking at the game, different tactics.

“He’s steadied the ship though and at the
same time, he’s got a clear way forward. We
worked hard in pre-season and things are going
well. It’s still very early on, he’s done a great job
so far, but it’s a long season, so we have to keep
on improving.”
