ood evening and welcome to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for tonight’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 fixture against AC Milan. We go into this game on the back of a disappointing defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday. On another day, we could – and should – have been celebrating a victory after controlling large parts of the game and creating a number of good goalscoring opportunities. However, we were unable to convert those chances. Wolves’ goalkeeper made some good saves, we hit the crossbar twice and were unable to find a breakthrough. That kept our opponents in the game and they scored late on. I returned to the Club on Sunday, having had a period of recovery following my recent gallbladder surgery. While I have been in regular contact with the staff and players during this time, I have found it difficult being far away as I am not good at watching matches and do not relax easily. I should like to thank Cristian and the rest of the staff, who took on extra responsibility while I was away. It is good to be back as we head into the final part of the season. Following Saturday’s defeat our focus had to quickly turn to this evening and I should like to welcome Stefano Pioli, his staff, players and everyone associated with AC Milan. When we travelled to the San Siro in the first leg three weeks ago, we were disappointed to concede so early in the game. However, we responded well against a strong team and were generally satisfied with our performance. Now, as we head into the second leg, we have to grasp our opportunity to progress to the quarter-finals of this competition. We have had some special games at our stadium with incredible atmospheres, and tonight we need to come together to create another of those occasions which will live long in the memory. It is important that we are positive in our approach and that we give you a performance that inspires you, because we need this stadium to be as loud as it has ever been – from the first minute until the last. Enjoy the game. ANTONIO CONTE G 6 THFC HEAD COACH TH18_06-07_Manager A4 new v2.indd 6 06/03/2023 10:20

Harry Kane has broken the 20-goal barrier in all competitions for a season for the ninth successive campaign. The striker’s close-range finish in our 2-0 victory against Chelsea last time out here meant Academy graduate Harry, 29, has scored 20-plus goals in all competitions in every season since his breakthrough in 2014/15. He is, of course, now our record goalscorer after surpassing Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing mark of 266 goals This season’s breakdown so far is 18 goals in the Premier League, one in the FA Cup and one in the UEFA Champions League. His recent record-breaking goal against Manchester City was also his 200th in the Premier League, so he’s now up to 201. He’s only the third player to reach 200 goals in the competition behind Wayne Rooney (208) and Alan Shearer (260). Back in 2018/19, Harry became the first player to score 20-plus goals for Spurs in five successive seasons. Greavsie scored 20-plus in his first four seasons at Spurs, but was laid low by hepatitis in 1965/66, restricting him to 16 goals in 31 matches. He then scored 20-plus in his next three before hitting 11 in 1969/70, when he moved to West Ham. Bobby Smith and Martin Chivers also hit 20-plus goals in four-successive seasons. As well as his goalscoring exploits, Kane has moved into the top 10 of our all-time appearance list. The striker’s appearance off the bench in our FA Cup loss at Sheffield United was his 421st in all competitions, lifting him ahead of Phil Beal and into 10th all-time. Harry and Hugo Lloris (443) are two of only 13 players to make more than 400 appearances in all competitions since we joined the Football League in 1908/09. The list is led by legendary former skipper Steve Perryman (854), followed by another great captain, Gary Mabbutt (611) and one of the all-time goalkeeping greats Pat Jennings (590). Cyril Knowles (506) is the only other player to reach 500-plus. Our top 10 appearance makers 1 - 854 - Steve Perryman (1969-86) 2 - 611 - Gary Mabbutt (1982-98) 3 - 590 - Pat Jennings (1964-77) 4 - 506 - Cyril Knowles (1964-75) 5 - 490 - Glenn Hoddle (1975-87) 6 - 452 - Ted Ditchburn (1946-58) 7 - 443 - Hugo Lloris (2012- 8 - 439 - Alan Gilzean (1964-74) 9 - 438 - Jimmy Dimmock (1919-31) 10 - 422 - Harry Kane (2011- NEWS DESK HARRY’S 20/20 VISION TRIO UP FOR MONTHLY AWARDS TONIGHT’S OFFICIALS We were represented in all three of the Premier League awards for February, with Antonio Conte, Emerson Royal and Oliver Skipp all nominated in various categories. Antonio was shortlisted for the Barclays Manager of the Month award. Despite seeing through an enforced break at home in Turin, Italy, as he continued his recovery from gallbladder surgery, Antonio maintained a keen involvement in the day-to-day management of the team across a period in which we have flourished in the Premier League. Despite suffering a 4-1 defeat to Leicester City on 11 February, that result has appeared somewhat a blip in a fine February for us as we have picked up nine points from a possible 12, with wins over Manchester City, West Ham United and Chelsea. A three-time winner of award, Antonio is up against Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag and Fulham’s Marco Silva. Among the nominations for the Player of the Month Award was Brazilian defender Royal, who hit great form since making his return to our starting XI in January’s trip to Manchester City. A goalscorer that night in Manchester, his renaissance continued into February with impressive displays in our wins over City, West Ham and Chelsea, finding the target against the Hammers. Shortlisted for the first time for the award, our number 12 is in the running against five other players: Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, Marcus Rashford of Manchester United and Fulham duo Bernd Leno and Manor Solomon. Finally, Skipp’s thunderous strike in our 2-0 win over Chelsea has been nominated for the Budweiser Goal of the Month. Breaking the deadlock for us in a hotly contested London derby, Oliver showed tenacity and desire to beat the Blues’ Joao Felix to the ball following an under-hit clearance before unleashing a fierce strike that stung the hands of Kepa Arrizabalaga before ricocheting off the underside of the crossbar and in. His first goal for the Club is up against strikes from Jeffrey Schlupp (Crystal Palace), Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest), Nampalys Mendy (Leicester City), Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City), Seamus Coleman (Everton) and Willian and Manor Solomon (both Fulham). Tonight’s tie must be decided on the night, so if the teams are level after 90 minutes we will play half an hour extra time, with penalties taking place if we’re still level after 120 minutes. JIMMY GREAVES 14 appearances/nine goals for Milan, 1961; 379 appearances/266 goals for Spurs, 1961-70 Jimmy Greaves joined Milan from Chelsea in June 1961, but had returned to London and Spurs by the end of the year in a £99,999 deal. Naturally, Greavsie scored on his Serie A debut against Vicenza, but his time was short lived in Italy, and Bill Nicholson got his man during December, quite an addition to his Double-winning squad of 1960/61. Of course, Jimmy delivered again on his debut, this time in spectacular style with a hat-trick in a 5-2 win against Blackpool and later scored in the final against Burnley as we retained the FA Cup. He would add the European Cup Winners’ Cup medal in 1963 and another FA Cup in 1967 before joining West Ham United in 1970, having scored a Club record 266 goals in 379 appearances – a record that stood for 53 years until Harry Kane reached the magic number of 267 last month.. CARLO CUDICINI Three appearances for Milan, 1991-93; 37 appearances for Spurs, 2009-12 Following in his father Fabio’s footsteps, Carlo Cudicini progressed through the youth set-up at Milan to make his only two appearances in the Champions League, against Porto in March 1993 and PSV in April 1993. He then played for Como, Prato, Lazio and Castel di Sangro before joining Chelsea in August 1999. He made over 200 appearances for the Blues between 1999-2009, the majority between 2000-2004. Whilst there, Carlo won the 2002/03 Premier League Golden Gloves award for goalkeeper of the year and twice picked up winner’s medals in the FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield. Carlo joined us in 2009 and made 37 appearances before a switch to LA Galaxy. He’s now a loan player technical coach at Chelsea. ...PLAYERS TO PLAY FOR SPURS AND MILAN F I V E ... 1 2 THFC FIVES 1 3 Score your perfect car Browse our huge range, buy online, and get a 14-day money back guarantee. EDGAR DAVIDS 29 appearances/2 goals for Milan, 1996-98; 44 appearances/1 goal for Spurs, 2005-2006 Edgar Davids joined Milan from Ajax during July 1996 and played 29 times for the Rossoneri before moving to Juventus in December 1997 where he won three Serie A titles. He had short spells at Inter and Barcelona before joining us in August 2005. He made 44 appearances for us then returned to Ajax in January 2007. Edgar returned to England for a brief spell at Crystal Palace in 2010 and was then player-manager at Barnet between 2012-2014. Capped 74 times by Holland, he won three Dutch titles, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League with Ajax and was part of Holland’s coaching team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. CHRISTIAN ZIEGE 47 appearances/4 goals for Milan, 1997-99; 55 appearances/10 goals for Spurs, 2001-04 After seven years, two Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Cup win in 1996, followed by Euro 96 success with Germany, Christian swapped home for Italy and Milan, where he added to his medal haul with a Serie A title in 1998/99. He moved to England and had spells at Middlesbrough and Liverpool, helping the Reds to a cup treble (League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup) before joining us in July 2001. Possessing a wand of a left foot, Christian scored in the 2002 League Cup Final loss to Blackburn, became the first Spurs player to appear in a World Cup Final when Germany lost out to Brazil in 2002, then scored a memorable free-kick against Arsenal in December 2002, but suffered a serious thigh injury that almost ended his career. He eventually returned to Germany and Borussia Monchengladbach in 2004, retired in 2005 and has since taken up a number of coaching roles – his latest at Austrian side FC Pinzgau Saaldelen. KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG 24 appearances for Spurs, 2007-09; 114 appearances/8 goals for Milan, 2010-16 Berlin born, ‘The Prince’ progressed through the Hertha BSC youth system to score five goals in 54 senior games until joining us in July 2007. He made his senior debut on our UEFA Cup visit to Anorthosis on 4 October and went on to make 24 league and cup appearances. He then had a loan stint with Borussia Dortmund between January and May 2009 before securing a move to Portsmouth in August 2009. He moved from Pompey to Genoa and onto Milan in 2010. He landed a Serie A title in 2010/11 and after a spell at Schalke, returned to Milan in 2015/16. From there, the midfielder played for Las Palmas, Eintracht Frankfurt and Sassuolo before helping Barcelona take the 2018/19 La Liga title whilst on loan. He’s since turned out for Fiorentina, Besiktas and Monza, and is now back in Germany at Hertha Berlin. 3 4 5 THFC FIVES 1 5 P L AY E R D E V E LO P M E N T P R O G R A M M E S Book now at: tottenhamhotspur.com/uk-courses Scan the QR code to find out more. ndoubtedly, it has been a frustrating last seven days. Having rejoiced in the highs of a comfortable and commanding Premier League win over Chelsea for the first time in over four years last Sunday, we have since suffered significant disappointment in the days that have followed with back-to-back defeats, first in the FA Cup to Sheffield United and then to Wolves in the Premier League. The pain of exiting the cup to the Blades was perhaps felt most as, having won five of our last seven in all competitions, we seemed to be finding consistency and momentum just at the right moment, especially as progression in the cup looked to be a real possibility this term. Alas, a late goal from the hosts at Bramall Lane put any chance of advancing to the quarter-finals to the sword before, despite a much-improved performance at Molineux on Saturday, we were unable to bounce back to winning ways at Wolves. It has clearly been a hugely disappointing and frustrating week for the team but, for Ivan Perisic, when you have difficult moments, you can’t begin to dwell on them. Despite the silverware he has won, with over 700 professional appearances under his belt (a landmark he recently surpassed), Ivan is also well versed in the emotions and nuances of difficult moments. While he has a Champions League crown to his name as well as three league titles on the continent in his collection, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Croatian. He has endured difficult patches. He has endured frustrating seasons. Whether it be when Wolfsburg just missed out on both Champions League qualification and silverware in 2013/14 or two years later in his time at Internazionale, where the Nerazzurri suffered the same fate, or even at the 2014 World Cup where Croatia didn’t make it out of the group stage, Ivan knows disappointment. However, those instances were all firsts for the wing-back; those were his first seasons at Wolfsburg and Internazionale, while the World Cup in Brazil was his first time on that stage. And yet, while success wasn’t immediate, patience and hard work saw those all turn around; in 2014/15, he helped Wolfsburg to finish second in the Bundesliga and win the DFB Pokal, in 2017/18, he BY LIAM CARSON IN SEARCH OF CONSISTENCY U AFTER A TOUGH WEEK ON THE ROAD FOR THE TEAM, IVAN PERISIC REFLECTS ON OUR RECENT FORTUNES AHEAD OF TONIGHT’S HUGE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TIE. helped Inter return to the Champions League before securing the Serie A title in 2020/21, not forgetting he also helped his nation to their first ever World Cup Final in 2018. So, while Ivan knows success, he also knows frustration. Crucially, he also knows how these moments can turn around and how quickly that can happen. “We began this season really well but, when you see the situation now where we’re out of both cups, it is not easy. We didn’t deserve to progress. We can’t accept this,” Ivan stated as he reflected on the past week. “When you look at the last 10 games, we can see some progress but, if you want to reach something more, it is not enough. We have to do it better. “We are working every day but somethings we have to change. If we want to reach something more, you have to play better. You have to be focussed every day, work hard. “It is a difficult situation, but we have to stick together now to come out from this position. “Now, the only option is to win tonight against AC Milan, to progress in the Champions League and then to also get in the Champions League again by being one of the top four teams. That is what we can achieve this year. We have to fight for that. “This season has been a special one with the World Cup. Until now, I don’t know, I’ve never played this many games, like 44, 45 matches, and that’s the same for other players but we have to push right until the end, to the last training session, to the last game and give everything to be successful at the end. Until the last few weeks, we were not so consistent, it was always up and downs, all the team. This, we have to change to have success at the end. “IT IS A DIFFICULT SITUATION, BUT WE HAVE TO STICK TOGETHER NOW” THFC 1 9 THE BIG INTERVIEW ONLINE ABUSE LEAVES A SCAR TH18_16-21_Main Interview_Perisic A4 v2.indd 19 06/03/2023 10:44

“We will see at the end of the season what we will achieve this year and then we can speak to see what we can do better.” It is true that, prior to the past week, we had begun to build some momentum and consistency in our performances as, barring our 4-1 defeat away at Leicester at the start of February, we were showing great resilience defensively while also picking up maximum points. In the middle of that run came the first leg of tonight’s tie with AC Milan where, despite us not coming away with a positive result as the Italian side edged us 1-0 at the San Siro, there were positives to take from the performance. In face of the deafening noise of the home fans, we showed character in northern Italy and our performance perhaps deserved better. But again, while there were positives, for Ivan, consistency will always be key. “It was (a positive performance in Milan), but we have to be more consistent,” he explained. “There have been a lot of ups and downs and we have to change that in this final part of the season. We have looked at where we made mistakes and we now have a lot of games in front of us, to do it better and finish this year positively. “Tonight, we have to be much better if we want to win against Milan because it is going to be tough, but I think with the help of our fans we can do it.” And it is clear that, if we are to progress in the competition this evening, our fans, as the Milanese were for the Rossoneri in the first leg, are going to be vital for us here tonight. “Like every game up until now, the fans have been with us, they will be with us tonight and I hope they can help us up until the end because we need them,” Ivan said. “Tonight will be a tough game and we saw the atmosphere in Milan; it was a really good one. “The result was not good, but everything is open. We have to perform much, much better, especially in the last 20 metres. We need to create chances to try to score the goals but, with the help of our fans, I think anything is possible. “There are plenty of games in front of us this season, but we have to stick together, work hard every day and, with the help of our fans, we can do it, we can beat Milan, and I think that will be important for this season.” “WITH THE HELP OF OUR FANS, I THINK ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE” THFC 2 1 THE BIG INTERVIEW TH18_16-21_Main Interview_Perisic A4 v2.indd 21 06/03/2023 10:44

Brazilian forward Lucas Moura was only on the pitch for a matter of minutes when he made his Spurs debut as a late substitute in the Champions League – but it’s fair to say he went on to make an impact in the competition in our colours! Signed from Paris St Germain on deadline day in the January 2018 transfer window, Lucas was on the bench for the first time in our 1-0 win over Arsenal on 10 February without seeing any action, but three days later he made his Spurs bow. Juventus’ Allianz Stadium was the venue for the first leg of our Champions League Round of 16 tie, Lucas again among our substitutes and he entered the fray in the 89th minute, replacing Erik Lamela for the closing stages of our impressive 2-2 draw. It was only a brief appearance but his debut was under his belt and it didn’t take long for the forward to get among the goals, scoring on his first start the following weekend when we drew 2-2 again, this time in an FA Cup tie in the less salubrious surroundings of Rochdale’s Spotland stadium. That was his only goal for us that season but in 2018/19, he enjoyed his best goalscoring campaign for us when he netted 15 times in 49 appearances – including one particular game which will live long in the memory of Lucas and, no doubt, Spurs fans everywhere. Our Champions League adventure that term was one of pure drama at every turn and Lucas had already played his part in helping us to reach the semi-finals. He scored in our 2-2 group stage draw at PSV Eindhoven before coming off the bench to net a crucial late equaliser in the Nou Camp to earn us a 1-1 draw against Barcelona which secured our place in the knockout stages. On we marched, seeing off Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City to book a spot in the last four, only to suffer a 1-0 home defeat in the first leg against Ajax here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And hopes of reaching the final were hanging by a thread in the Amsterdam return when Matthijs De Ligt and Hakim Ziyech both scored to put Ajax 3-0 ahead on aggregate. But Lucas hadn’t read the script. Ten minutes into the second half he pulled a goal back, which might only have been a consolation had he not added another within four minutes to level it up at 2-2 on the night and suddenly leave us one goal away from victory. Sure enough, in the 96th minute Lucas was on hand to complete his hat-trick to send us through the Champions League Final for the first time and spark wild scenes of celebrations on and off the pitch, and among Spurs fans across the world. Lucas also netted 10 Premier League goals that term, including the first-ever hat-trick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 4-0 win over Huddersfield in April 2019. Having started his career with Corinthians in Brazil, he also played for Sao Paulo before leaving to join PSG in January 2013. He won four successive league titles in France but it’s his Champions League exploits for us that will ensure he’s always remembered here at Spurs. LUCAS MOURA Lucas Moura has only scored three hat-tricks in his career, two of them coming in our colours. As well as his trebles against Huddersfield Town and Ajax, the Brazilian international also netted a hat-trick for Sao Paulo in a 4-2 win away to Sport Recife in Brazil’s Serie A in October 2012. HARRY WINKS Harry Winks fulfilled his boyhood dream when he featured in our colours for the first time – making his Spurs debut in European competition. Having been in our Academy as a youngster, the midfielder joined our youth ranks full-time in July 2012 and signed professional two years later – the perfect scenario for the self-confessed Spurs fan. And his dreams were realised further in November 2014, when he came off the bench for the final few minutes of our Europa League group stage clash with FK Partizan at White Hart Lane. It was only a brief appearance and they were the only minutes he played for the first team that season, but he’d made the step up at the age of 18 and described it at the time as ‘the best moment of my life’. In doing so, he became the seventh Academy product to feature in first team action at that stage of the 2014/15 campaign alongside Nabil Bentaleb, Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Milos Veljkovic. At that point, he’d represented England at Under-19 level, broken into our Under-21 set-up the season before and been on the first team bench three times at Liverpool, West Brom and Benfica. “It’s a dream to play for Spurs – five minutes or 50 minutes I didn’t mind, as long as I got on,” said Harry following his debut. “It was brilliant. I wasn’t thinking of anything as I warmed up, just to go out there and enjoy it. “Nothing was crossing my mind, I wasn’t nervous or scared, I just wanted to go out there and play. It felt natural and I loved every minute of it. It means everything. We work so hard and to get the opportunity is massive. “It’s a dream come true to go out there and play, especially for the team you support.” Europe was the stage for two more appearances in 2015/16 when he featured against FK Qarabag and Fiorentina in the Europa League before really making his breakthrough the following campaign. A neat and tidy player, always looking to receive the ball and possessing a quality range of passing, Winksy played in the Premier League for the first time against Liverpool in August 2016. His first professional goal came in a 3-2 win over West Ham United three months later. For a couple of seasons, Harry was a mainstay of our team and broke into the England set-up as well, making his debut against Lithuania in October 2017. He’s currently on loan at Italian side Sampdoria and, after missing the first half of the season through injury, has been a regular in their midfield in recent weeks. Harry Winks became the 800th player to make their debut for Spurs when he featured against FK Partizan. Our list includes all players who have played in our first team in the Southern League, Football League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and all senior European competitions. DID YOU KNOW? PIERLUIGI GOLLINI Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini’s Spurs debut was a significant one in our own history as it occurred in a game which was a ‘debut’ for the club as well. After finishing seventh in the 2020/21 Premier League season, we qualified for a new UEFA tournament and took our place in the inaugural Europa Conference League. With new Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm, we kick-started our campaign in the competition in the Play-Off round and were drawn to face Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira. The first leg was away in Portugal and came just four days after we defeated Manchester City here in N17 in our Premier League opener. The new boss made a whole host of changes for the Pacos fixture at the Estadio Capital do Movel and there were no fewer than six players handed their Spurs debuts in the game. As well as Gollini, we saw Bryan Gil, Nile John, Dane Scarlett, J’Neill Bennett and Maksim Paskotsi all in first team action for the first time – the latter pair coming off the bench. Born in Bologna, Italian keeper Gollini had already had experience of English football. Having first started his youth career at Fiorentina, he was picked up by Manchester United and spent two years in their Academy. He never made a senior appearance for United though and moved back to Italy with Hellas Verona in 2014, making his Serie A debut against Genoa in September that year. After two years there, he returned to England to sign for Aston Villa, then in the Championship, in July 2016 and featured 20 times before joining Atalanta on an 18-month loan in January 2017. Gollini signed permanently for the Italian side in the summer of 2018 and went on to make 100 appearances before we brought him in on loan in July 2021. He featured for his during pre-season before making his debut against Pacos on 19 August. Fielding a much-changed side, it wasn’t the most fluent performance from us in the Portuguese sunshine and we lost 1-0, Pierluigi having little chance to prevent Lucas Silva’s goal on the stroke of half-time. The following week, Gollini made his senior home debut for the return leg with Pacos when we eased to a comfortable 3-0 win to reach the group stages. Over the course of his season-long loan, he featured 10 times in our colours – playing in all three cup competitions but never making a Premier League appearance for us. He returned to parent club Atalanta but hasn’t played for them since, spending last season on loan with Fiorentina while in January this year, he joined Serie A league leaders Napoli, although he is yet to feature for them. Pierluigi Gollini was only the fourth Italian national to wear our colours. He follows in the footsteps of fellow goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, Nicola Berti and Paolo Tramezzani, although we do currently have Destiny Udogie on our books, of course, but he remains on loan at Udinese and has yet to play for us. “ Y WORD TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT “ Whenever a chant started around the stadium, I did become quite upset. Not out of offence for the word being used, but the fact that it was communicated to Spurs fans that this term is offensive to Jewish people and yet they still choose to sing it. I don't believe the whole stadium is filled with antisemites, but by actively choosing to sing this word even aer being told it is offensive, could be seen as antisemitic and disregarding the feelings and opinions of Jewish people. Two Brazilian cult heroes helped us through a nerve-tingling night against Milan at the same stage of the UEFA Champions League 12 years ago. With their compatriots Richarlison, Emerson Royal and Lucas in the squad as we face the Rossoneri this time around, let’s hope history repeats itself! All-action midfielder Sandro labels the Round of 16, second leg at the Lane on 9 March, 2011 as his ‘best game ever’. Popular goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes kept clean sheets under intense pressure at the San Siro and in the second leg as Milan, fielding a front three of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Alexandre Pato, piled on the pressure. It was our first season in the group stage of the Champions League, and we’d taken the competition by storm, goals galore in the group stage with memorable wins against holders Inter, FC Twente and Werder Bremen at the Lane, plus draws in Holland and Germany. Even in our only loss, we went out on our swords at Inter, Gareth Bale’s famous hat-trick dragging us back from 4-0 down to 4-3. But this was different. The knockout phase, no second chances. We played the first leg perfectly, kept Milan at bay and then struck on the counter as Sandro fed Aaron Lennon, who took off, beat the last defender and squared for Peter Crouch to slot home the only goal. A feisty encounter then blew up as Gennaro Gattuso and Joe Jordan had their spat on the touchline. Gomes and Sandro starred in the second leg as we kept the team that would win the Serie A title goalless again. There were scares – William Gallas cleared off the line, Gomes saved from Pato and, in the second half, Pato and Robinho had late chances, but didn’t hit the target. That goalless draw took us through to the quarter-finals and a meeting with Real Madrid. Speaking to us recently, here’s what our Brazilian duo remember about that special night at the Lane.... SANDRO “That game… that was my best game ever, for sure. The team needed this kind of game, a perfect match for a midfielder. We knew Milan would come for a win, and fight with everything they had. “I did everything I could to protect Gomes, to protect the defensive line. I tried to be everywhere and everything I tried to do, I did it. That’s why it became my favourite match, my biggest match. “Also, the atmosphere, it was the best, ever, for me. Everything came together. It was the biggest game for us, the second leg of a Champions League knockout, against a team like Milan. The first leg was amazing as well. I started the move for the goal. “I had a good feeling going into the second leg. For me, it was my real start at Tottenham. After that, the fans really started to love me. It was a great feeling. That was why I had to go to the San Siro for the first leg this time around. To be there again, with our fans, that was special.” GOMES “Milan had an amazing squad. We knew the home game was going to be even harder, because they were going to have a reaction from the first leg. We knew we had to defend, to concentrate. “Yes, it was a nervous night! We had no time to think about being nervous though. The game was exciting. I remember one cross where I got over Ibra to collect the ball and that gave us a little rest in the game. For the whole game, the way we performed, we did everything we needed to do to go through “I remember Sandro and Wilson Palacios bossing the middle in Milan, then Sandro again in the second leg. We always played football but, on this night, we knew we needed to hold their ambitions. They were very experienced as well. At that time, us, as a club, we were not experienced in Champions League football, especially in the knockout phase, especially against a side who play almost every season at that stage. “The last five minutes…wow. The last minutes are always the hardest. You’ve got the result, but you need to defend it. I believe the last part of the game feels longer than the 90 minutes! On that particular night, we felt that on the pitch as well. It felt like the longest five minutes, but we held our nerve. We knew we could achieve something very special for the club.” By Paul Miles DANCING TO THE SAMBA BEAT! THFC 2 7 TEAM TALK TH18_27_Team_Talk v2.indd 27 06/03/2023 13:38

This week’s archive dive – naturally - is Italy themed. We do not have many objects specifically from AC Milan, but if we broadened out our search to cover the whole of Italy means we can share a bit more of the archive with you! We have objects from many teams from Serie A including a few from Milan, while we also have items from Fiorentina, Juventus, and Inter Milan. Starting with Milan, there is one older object, a silver salver from a match we played against them in 1986; the Juan Gamper Trophy, a tournament hosted by Barcelona in memory of one of their founders. In this third place play-off, we beat Milan 2-1. This object has a number of details on it, we can see reference to the cups that Milan had won up to that point on the front and on the back are the names of the coaching staff and players who were part of those victories. The more recent object in our collection from AC Milan is another silver salver, this time from our 2011 Champions League meeting. This object, with their club badge, name and date is much simpler in design compared to the older one. We have more items in the collection from Milan’s other team, Internazionale, including a collection of pin badges but, as with some other items in our archive, they are undated. But, we do have a silver salver from Inter depicting the San Siro, the ground they share with Milan. This one is from our Champions League fixture on 18 September 2018, the season where we went all the way to the final. We also have two objects from Fiorentina. The first is a plastic silver replica of Michelangelo’s statue of David, gifted at David Howell’s testimonial match on 2 August 1997. The use of the imagery of David on this gift is similar to the way we have seen other clubs display their city’s proud history, reminding their opponents that Florence is home to great art. As well as the mini David, we also have a lovely replica 1926/27 season shirt from them, gifted in 2016, from when we played them in the Europa League. The shirt has their fleur-de-lis badge and then ‘Tottenham Hotspur – ACF Fiorentina February 25th 2016’ on the other side. Also included in the presentation box is an explanation of the shirt, when it is from and why it is important, accompanied by a photo of the 1926/27 team in the shirt. It is always helpful when gifts have the date on them somewhere! The final object pictured here, is a silk tie, with a zebra pattern. This tie, we believe is from Juventus, although we are unsure of when it dates to. With one of Juventus’ many nicknames being Le Zebre, we know this is where the tie is from. We found a similar tie online, by the same manufacturer which is said to be from the 1970s; if anyone reading this might be able to shed more light on this object please get in touch with us! This is an example of the behind-the-scenes research work we sometimes need to do as part of taking care of the archive. There are, of course, many other objects from Italian clubs in our collection, this is just a snapshot. Steve Perryman 77 SPUrS v aC mILan SEASON 2010/11 tOttenHamHOtSPUr.COm S teve Perryman is reflecting on what he describes as one of the best moments in his Spurs career. And considering that career took in a record 850-plus appearances in all competitions, two League Cups, two FA Cups and two UEFA Cups, a Football Writers Player of the Year award and the MBE, that’s quite a statement. But how else can you describe scoring both goals in a European semi-final win against the mighty AC Milan? Esteemed BBC commentator Barry Davies certainly had the words – just as he did years later when Gazza curled home his free-kick against Arsenal at Wembley. “He’s done it again!” he declared as Steve’s second goal flew into the bottom corner from 30 yards. Fast-forward almost 40 years and the countdown to another glory, glory night is almost over. AC Milan are back in town, this time in the Champions League. “It was ‘my game’, if you like,” said Steve of the 2-1 win on April 5, 1972. “I’m a team person and I’ve had better moments as a team man, but I don’t think I’ve had a better match from a personal point of view.” Milan were packed full of stars and were in a golden period. They won the Italian Cup in 1967, Serie A and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1968, European Cup in 1969 and would go on to win the Italian Cup again in 1972 and both the Italian Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup again in 1973. But they hadn’t reckoned on a highly-rated 20-year-old at Spurs who was about to halt their European progress in 1972. Steve made his debut three years earlier and was already a fixture in the side that included greats like Pat Jennings, Mike England, Alan Mullery, Martin Chivers, Alan Gilzean and Martin Peters. He admits the headlines were always about these legends. But he was about to introduce himself, Gareth Bale-like, to the world. AC Milan opened the scoring in the first leg with a cracker from Romeo Benetti but it was soon cancelled out as Cyril Knowles crossed from the left, Gilzean nodded down and Chivers laid back for Steve to hammer into the top corner from 20 yards. “I just wanted to get a good strike on it because I was well-known in those days for hitting a lot of shots over the bar!” laughed Steve, who then talked us through his second goal in the second half to win the first leg. “It was from much longer distance. The ball came out from a corner, I took a touch and thought ‘I better hit it’. I was having such a great day off the back of the first goal. The ball needed hitting and I hit it into the bottom corner, probably the only place I could have scored. No-one was more surprised than me when it went in.” It was all set-up perfectly for the second leg in the San Siro a fortnight later, April 19, 1972. Steve takes up the story. “The first leg was live on television in Italy and you can imagine, a massive game, a semi-final and I scored two goals. Perryman’S fIneSt HOUr WOrdS by PaUL mILeS “I’m a team person and I’ve had better moments as a team man, but I don’t think I’ve had a better match from a personal point of view.” “We ended up staying and training at Inter Milan’s training complex, which included a hotel. So we went to check-in and all the staff, as you can imagine, were so delighted we beat AC Milan and would love us to beat them again because they are their arch rivals. “But all they wanted to know about was ‘Perryman’. ‘Who is Perryman? Which one’s Perryman?’ Normally, it was all about Chivers, Mullery, Jennings, Peters or England but because they’d seen me score the two goals, they thought I did that every week! “All of a sudden I was elevated up to be a bit more than I probably was.” Modest as ever, Steve played his part again as Alan Mullery’s early strike silenced the Milan crowd. The team held on for a 1-1 draw, a 3-2 aggregate win and went on to win the final over two legs against Wolves. Asked how he felt at the time and Steve’s honest answer is ‘I must admit, I wasn’t thinking about it’. “I was so naive and things were happening so quickly. My debut, the League Cup Final (1971), playing with so many great players and I didn’t have time to sit down and think what it all meant. If you did, you’d frighten yourself stupid! “We’re talking about it now, almost 40 years on, so that shows it meant something. But you just don’t think about those things at the time. You just think about doing your job, playing well and staying in the team. “I always ask people why they support Spurs and it’s because they saw Jimmy Greaves score two goals one day or they came to White Hart Lane for a night game and the grass was glistening off the floodlights – something hits you. “Well, those goals are part of Tottenham Hotspur’s history and I’m sure someone, somewhere in the world, maybe supports the club on the back of those two goals. Not necessarily even the goals, but the whole situation of that tie, coming up against and beating the great AC Milan and this youngster pops up and scores twice. “You never know the impact, but a lot of supporters still talk to me about it.” And they will continue to do so for another 40 years… “Something was happening that night, wasn’t it?” Put a pic caption in here please TAKING ISSUE A quick glance through a couple of previous matchday programmes against Milan 1972 We stuck to our usual format for the matchday programme against Milan on 5 April 1972 – when the Italians arrived in north London for the first leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final. A standard 16-page issue was produced, priced at five pence, with the front cover showing all the match details and including our old club crest in black and white. Throughout the issue, action photos from our previous matches in the competition were featured, starting on page two with two images from the first round, second leg against Keflavik, which we won 9-0 at White Hart Lane. Page three was a welcome to Milan in Italian, with that translated into English on page five. We learnt that the Milan fixture was our first against Italian opponents in major European competition, although we had defeated Torino in a two-legged Anglo-Italian League Cup Winners’ Cup and that ‘we have good reason to respect the standard of football in Italy.’ It also informed us that Milan had beaten Lierse SK in round four, the Belgians having defeated Leeds United in the first round and ‘those results must give some indication of Milan’s strength.’ ‘A Brief History’ of Milan featured on page six, with a full page team photo opposite. The article talked about their success at Wembley in 1963, when they became the first Italian club to win the European Cup by beating Benfica 2-1 and followed that up in 1969, defeating Ajax 4-1 in Madrid. Their players were profiled briefly on page eight, including the likes of Fabio Cudicini, Romeo Benetti and the great Gianni Rivera. More Milan coverage appeared on page 10 – with images of Benetti, Rivera, Karl Schnellinger and Riccardo Sogliano – and page 11, on which guest writer Jack Rollin wrote about ‘The History of Success’ and discussed Italian teams’ records in European competition. A piece with Alan Gilzean featured on page 13, in which he recalled playing against Milan for former club Dundee in the 1962/63 European Cup semi-final. The then Scottish champions lost 5-1 in Italy, but Gilzean did score the only goal of the game in the return leg. We won our home leg against Milan, Steve Perryman scoring a rare double in our 2-1 win. 2011 For our first-ever Champions League campaign in 2010/11, we produced special A4 size matchday programmes for all home games – something that has continued to this day. Our AC Milan issue was our fourth of that season and cost £5, with a special UEFA artwork adorning the front cover along with the match details. In his column, manager Harry Redknapp said “This evening we must finish the job we started at the San Siro three weeks ago,” before going on to pay tribute to our former defender Dean Richards, who had recently passed away. A full page obituary to Dean appeared on page 17. A match report from our first leg in the San Siro was on page 12-13, with a two-page history of Milan on pages 19-20. Their players were profiled over seven pages and the squad was littered with stars, including the likes of Thiago Silva, Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Filippo Inzaghi. A number of our former players and staff with Milan links were featured throughout the programme, starting with then first team coach Joe Jordan and former striker Jimmy Greaves, who both previously played for the Serie A side of course. Elsewhere, Steve Perryman and Alan Mullery – who scored the goals in our 1972 UEFA Cup semi-final against Milan, discussed their contribution to those ties. ‘National Service’ profiled some of our players who featured for their countries in international games against Italy, including Ossie Ardiles, Ian Walker, Alan Gilzean, Bill Brown, Gary Lineker and Helder Postiga, while the main interview was with Michael Dawson, who captained us to victory in the San Siro in the first leg. John Fennelly looked back game-bygame at our 1972 UEFA Cup success, which ended with an aggregate victory over Wolves at White Hart Lane, and the issue concluded with a round up of previous matches against Milan. Again, we got the job done against the Italians that night, holding them to a goalless draw to secure a 1-0 aggregate win to reach the quarter-finals. SPURS WOMEN PENALTY WOE AS ROYALS PROGRESS IN FA CUP Our hopes of reaching the Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals were dashed recently when we lost on penalties to fellow WSL side Reading. After a tight goalless draw in our fifth-round tie at Brisbane Road, neither side could find a winner in extra time and so we went to penalties to decide the outcome. The unfortunate Kerys Harrop missed her spot-kick while the visitors converted all five of theirs to progress. Rehanne Skinner made two changes to the side that began our previous game against Manchester United, Angharad James and Nikola Karczewska replacing the suspended Eveliina Summanen and Bethany England. Kit Graham made a welcome return to the bench for the first time following her recovery from injury. It was the visitors with the first chance of the game in the second minute, Rachel Rowe shooting to the bottom left corner from long range, but Tinja-Riikka Korpela got down to catch. Our number one could have had an assist when her drop-kick went all the way up to Celin Bizet, who shifted the ball onto her right foot before curling straight at Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney. Ashleigh Neville played a nice one-two with Bizet before shooting low and wide of the far post on her left foot as we broke forward again, before Maloney gathered the ball from a Karczewska header, as she flicked the ball on from Harrop’s delivery. Charlie Wellings shot straight at Korpela with power from the left wing, and on the other side Jade Moore tried her luck from distance, but our keeper demonstrated good reflexes to react. Neville’s cross from the right was headed toward goal by Drew Spence, with Moloney catching again, before the keeper came off of her line quickly to deny Bizet from getting a shot away, having been put through on goal by Neville. Early in the second half, Rowe worked her way into the edge of the 18-yard box and saw her shot blocked by Molly Bartrip while, at the other end, Spence put a good ball through to Karczewska, but again Moloney was quick off of her line to nullify the threat. Neville made an important block to deny Reading finding the opener as the KIT GRAHAM MADE A WELCOME RETURN TO ACTION AFTER INJURY AGAINST READING NIKOLA KARCZEWSKA ON THE FRONT FOOT IN OUR FA CUP CLASH WITH READING 4 0 THFC SPURS WOMEN TH18_40-41_Women A4 v2.indd 40 06/03/2023 13:49
away side put a free-kick into the danger area as it remained goalless with 23 minutes remaining. With the home supporters getting behind the team to try to help them find a winner, substitute Chioma Ubogagu put a good ball in for Karczewska in the 90th minute, this time we got the shot away but once again Moloney narrowed the angle to make the save. Neville’s cross was parried out to Spence moments later, and she volleyed wide. With nothing to separate the two sides in 90 minutes, we went into extra-time but still the breakthrough wouldn’t come for either side. There was a big cheer in the 102nd minute, when Graham returned from her long-term injury to replace Karczewska and almost made an instant impact, getting on the end of an Ayane cross before steering the ball just wide. And so to penalties – with just the one miss deciding the tie. After four successful spotkicks, including Spence and Graham converting, Harrop crashed hers against the crossbar. We needed a slice of luck from somewhere as Bizet and Ayane also scored from 12 yards to keep us alive, but Reading were faultless with their five penalties, Lauren Wade netting the decisive winner. Spurs: Korpela, Ale (Ubogagu 55), Turner, Bartrip, Harrop, James, Spence, Bizet, Iwabuchi (Ayane 85), Neville (C), Karczewksa (Graham 102). Substitutes (not used): Spencer, Zadorsky, Houghton, Gunning-Williams. Having already headed north last weekend to take on Manchester City in WSL action, Rehanne Skinner’s side are back up in the north west this Sunday to face Liverpool at Prenton Park. We picked up three points against Matt Beard’s side earlier in the season with a 1-0 win at Brisbane Road in October. Kick-off on Sunday is at 2pm. We are then back on home soil for a midweek clash with Leicester City, which kicks off at 7pm on Wednesday, 15 March. The game had originally been scheduled to take place in January, but was postponed due to a frozen pitch. Finally, we end the month with the big one. Arsenal visit Brisbane Road for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday, 25 March. Tickets for our home games against Leicester and Arsenal are available on our club website. Any fans wishing to attend our Spurs Women away fixtures should go through the home team’s website to purchase tickets. hris Waddle was quite the footballer. In a time when English football was perhaps seeing its entertainment value slide into something rather attritional and gritty, Waddle did not conform to the era’s direction of travel. He was different, he stood out, he was a creator and an innovator. In a coarse transitional period for British society, especially the industrial sector, as we lurched into a new era, English football was an industry that required a fresh outlook and a change of direction if it was to compete with the thriving leagues of France, Spain and Italy – and it was players of Waddle’s ilk that were to be key to that. While it is our national sport, in the 1980s, the beautiful game was on the decline on our shores. Gates were falling as excitement on the pitch dwindled while rising hooliganism off the pitch tainted football’s image. With the game scarred, an entire rethink of our game was needed, from stadiums to ticketing, to fan experience and, perhaps most crucially for its progress, the on-field product. That came with the rebranding of both our top flight and the European Cup into the Premier League and Champions League respectively – a move which transformed the reputation of our game. New standards were set, expectations were raised, and entertainment came to the fore. Waddle was a symbol of that. He was a player, an innovator. Famed as much for his skill as his mullet, when he got the ball, you would be off your seat because, while you were not quite sure what was going happen, you knew it would be magical. That much is clear from just his career history. Picking up 62 England caps and a World Cup semi-finalists in 1990, he was one of the few English players selected to play on the continent in that era, departing our doors for Marseille in 1989. He even reached the European Cup Final with OM in 1991. Having made over 200 appearance in lilywhite in between 1985 and 1989, helping us to reach the FA Cup Final in 1987, he An artist on the pitch in his day, CHRIS WADDLE was a star of our team in the late 1980s with his creativity and ingenuity in the final third. Now a pundit for national and international media, we caught up with the former England international to get his analysis on some of our forward options. By Liam Carson C CATCHING UP WITH… Chris Waddle CHRIS WADDLE IN HIS SPURS HEYDAY THFC 4 3 CHRIS WADDLE TH18_43-45_Catching_Up_With A4.indd 43 03/03/2023 15:42
later starred for Sheffield Wednesday in the Premier League, leading them to both domestic cup finals in 1993 – the same year he was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, all the while entering the twilight years of his career. Now retired and enjoying life off the pitch, Chris continues to work in football as he offers his analysis of the game to international broadcasters like the BBC. So, when we crossed paths with our former attacking midfielder in the press box on our recent trip to Preston North End, we had a catch up to get his thoughts on the talents of our forward options. And there was no better place to start than Dejan Kulusevski. A player that, since he arrived in north London back in January, 2022, many have compared to Waddle with the duo both sharing a rather unique approach to the game and wing play. But does the man himself see the comparison? “A little bit,” he smiled. “He’s obviously left footed. He likes to come inside, which I used to, but I suppose we’re also different in ways. “You are always going to get comparisons throughout life. Probably when I was playing, when I started out, someone had compared me to someone else who was older…you’ll always will get that. I can see where they are coming from, don’t get me wrong. “Dejan’s first thing when he picks up the ball is ‘can I take the full-back on? Can I make something happen?’ I played like that. I played off the cuff. To me, you had your discussions with coaches – lucky enough, most of the coaches I had let me do what I wanted in a way – so I think, if you have somebody, especially modern day, that can beat men and open doors, you encourage it. You don’t take it away from them. “I’m sure Antonio Conte will be saying to him, ‘look, when you have a one-on-one, that’s what you’ve got to do, but, when you’re back on our 18-yard box, I don’t want you nutmegging people and dribbling’. As you get older, you get wiser, and I’m sure he will. “He’s a very talented player, an exciting talent. He works hard for the team. He gives them good balance and we know he can score and create. I have never been into the comparison side to be perfectly honest but, if people like to think that, then fine. He probably wants to be known as himself and he has his own style, which he has obviously relied on to get this far.” A player who shone for us in Lancashire that night was another of our attacking options – Heung-Min Son. A forward who has continually found new levels to his game, Sonny struck twice in our 3-0 win at Deepdale with two stunning efforts, however it is fair to say our number seven has endured a frustrating campaign so far this year. Yet, Chris feels this is something natural, a spell which every player goes through at some point in their career and, crucially, one that our South Korean star will come through. “Class is permanent,’ he said on Sonny. “You’ll have your dip. Everybody has a season or part of a season where you think it wasn’t quite as good as the last one but that’s what you strive for, to get better. So, you can’t rest in football. “DEJAN KULUSEVSKI IS A VERY TALENTED PLAYER, AN EXCITING TALENT” CHRIS WADDLE IS FULL OF ADMIRATION FOR OUR CURRENT WINGER DEJAN KULUSEVSKI 4 4 THFC CHRIS WADDLE TH18_43-45_Catching_Up_With A4.indd 44 03/03/2023 15:42
“My goal in the game was, at the end of every season, ‘what can I do better next season? What can I do? What can I improve on?’ You have to have a hunger and a desire – and Son has that. “People forget these guys play a lot of football. You know, Son travels back to Korea to play for his country, he’s captain, he’s been in a World Cup, he comes back and yes, he’s not had the best of seasons so far, but he certainly showed what he can do (at Preston) – he can just produce something out of nothing. “You have to say, the game was crying out for a goal, and he produced two wonderful goals which we know he is capable of. You know, it’s not a shock. When he does something like that and people say to me, ‘what a goal by Son’…I expect that from him, and I think the Tottenham fans do. He has that in his locker. “He’s a wonderful talent, a very unselfish player, works hard for the team, looks a very dedicated footballer and, in his time at Tottenham, he has been absolutely marvellous.” Finally, we had to get Chris’ views on one of our own, Harry Kane, who, at that moment, had just equalled Jimmy Greaves’ all-time record goalscoring record with the winning goal in our 1-0 triumph over Fulham in January. Having played in lilywhite with that record standing firm, out on its own, untouched and untroubled, it is certainly something Chris was aware of as a Spurs player. So, to see it now broken by Harry before our number 10 has even turned 30, we asked the man from Gateshead whether he thought Greaves’ record would ever be broken. “Quite simply, no,” he said as he reflected on Harry’s achievement. “If Clive Allen had stayed – we’re talking a lot of years mind…Clive got 49 goals in one of the seasons I was there and then he went to Bordeaux. But no, I never thought anybody would beat Jimmy Greaves’ record. Harry’s been a great servant to the Club.” HEUNG-MIN SON IS ANOTHER TO IMPRESS CHRIS “SON IS A WONDERFUL TALENT, A VERY UNSELFISH PLAYER, WORKS HARD FOR THE TEAM, LOOKS A VERY DEDICATED FOOTBALLER AND, IN HIS TIME AT TOTTENHAM, HE HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY MARVELLOUS” THFC 4 5 CHRIS WADDLE TH18_43-45_Catching_Up_With A4.indd 45 03/03/2023 15:42
