Milan were considered Champions League royalty when we faced them during our first-ever campaign in the prestigious tournament back in 2010/11 – but that didn’t prevent us from knocking them out in the Round of 16. Seven-times European champions at that stage – a number they still hold today – they had last won the trophy just four years earlier when they defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the 2007 final, having also disposed of Manchester United in the semi-finals. On the other hand, we were making our debut in the Champions League since its revamp in 1992 and we had enjoyed a great run in the competition – becoming the first team ever to score at least two goals in every group stage game. That, of course, included Gareth Bale’s stunning hat-trick at the San Siro in October 2010, when we went down 3-4 to Milan’s city rivals Internazionale on matchday three. So, our pairing with the red and black half of Milan in the Last 16 ensured a swift return to the San Siro for Harry Redknapp’s side. In the teaming rain in Milan on 15 February, 2011, we produced a disciplined and mature performance against a Serie A side which included the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho, Clarence Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso. Having more than matched the home side, we snatched the win and a vital away goal thanks to a Peter Crouch strike 10 minutes from time. We always carried a threat throughout, Crouch a constant nuisance to the Milan defence while Rafa van der Vaart and Aaron Lennon provided the guile and craft and defensively we stayed strong. When the home side did get through, goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was on hand to deny them. The winner came from a classic counter, Lennon streaking away down the right, skipping past a challenge and squaring for Crouch to roll the ball past Marco Amelia, giving us a lead to protect back at White Hart Lane. Milan: Abbiati (Amelia 18), Abate, Nesta, Yepes, Antonini, Gattuso, Thiago Silva, Flamini, Seedorf (Pato 46), Robinho Ibrahimovic. Substitutes (not used): Papastahopoulos, Jankulovski, Merkel, Legrottaglie, Oddo Spurs: Gomes, Corluka (Woodgate 58), Gallas, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Palacios, Sandro, Pienaar (Kranjcar 77), Van der Vaart (Modric 62), Crouch. Substitutes (not used): Cudicini, Bassong, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko. A NERVY NIGHT IN N17 Three weeks later in north London, a night of real tension and nerves finally came to a jubilant conclusion as we held out for a goalless draw to book our place in the quarter-finals. Milan, who had to score at least once to remain in the competition, laid siege to our goal in the first half. Gomes saved from Ibrahimovic and Alexandre Pato, while William Gallas kept Milan at bay with a priceless goal-line clearance from Robinho’s deflected shot. We improved after the break however it was still Milan who provided the threat, with Mathieu Flamini and Pato coming desperately close to forcing extra time. But we dug deep and defended superbly well as a team, Gallas and Dawson magnificent at the heart of our backline. Robinho almost grabbed the goal Milan craved as the tie entered stoppage time, but he was high with his fizzing drive and the final whistle sounded moments later, the signal for the party to start! Spurs: Gomes, Corluka, Gallas, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Modric, Sandro, Pienaar (Jenas 70), Van der Vaart (Bale 62), Crouch (Pavlyuchenko 82). Substitutes (not used): Cudicini, Hutton, King, Defoe. Milan: Abbiati, Abate, Nesta, Jankulovski (Antonini 70), Boateng (Merkel 76), Thiago Silva, Flamini (Rodney 87), Seedorf, Pato, Robinho, Ibrahimovic. Substitutes (not used): Amelia, Papastahopoulos, Yepes, Oddo. PERRYMAN AT THE DOUBLE The first season of the UEFA Cup saw us drawn against Milan at the semi-final stage. The first leg here on April 5, 1972 was our fourth game in six days following a busy Easter programme and our 60th of the season. By contrast, it was game number 37 for Milan. Early action saw Martin Chivers shoot over from a Ralph Coates assist and Pat Jennings parry a Gianni Rivera shot. Alan Gilzean headed over from an Alan Mullery centre before Milan took a shock 25th-minute lead through Romeo Benetti which silenced the 42,064 crowd. Within 10 minutes we were level. Good work by Cyril Knowles, Martin Peters and Gilzean resulted in the Scot setting up Steve Perryman on the edge of the penalty area. His rasping shot beat Fabio Cudicini in the visitors’ goal. Riccardo Sogliano was sent off in the 61st minute by Spanish referee Mariano Iglesias for twice delaying a free kick. Four minutes later Perryman notched the winning goal. A defensive header to clear a corner fell to him outside the penalty area and he drove in a 25-yard volley. Spurs: Jennings, Kinnear, Knowles, Mullery, England, Naylor, Gilzean, Perryman, Chivers, Peters, Coates (Neighbour). Milan: Cudicini, Sabadini, Zignoli, Anquilletti, Schellinger, Rosato, Sogliano, Benetti, Bigon, Rivera, Golin. THE ITALIAN JOB Alan Gilzean failed a late fitness test and John Pratt was drafted in to replace him in our starting line-up for the second leg a fortnight later. The home side squandered two early chances. Centres from Piero Prati found Rivera who shot inches wide of a post and Giorgio Biasioli who rifled over the bar. Alan Mullery stunned the 68,482 San Siro crowd with his sixth minute strike. A Cyril Knowles raid down the left was beaten away as far as Chivers, whose shot was blocked. From the rebound Perryman rolled the ball to the right which Mullery hit with a 25-yard right foot shot high into Cudicini’s net. Mike England saw his header under pressure from a swerving cross rebound from his own crossbar and he went close at the other end meeting a John Pratt free kick with a fierce header which Cudicini did well to punch over the bar. Following a slip by Knowles in the 70th minute, Phil Beal brought down Alberto Bigon and Rivera equalised from the resultant penalty. We held out under intense pressure for the last 20 minutes to claim a place in the all-English final versus Wolves, which we ultimately won. Milan: Cudicini, Anquilletti, Zignoli, Rosato, Schnellinger, Biasiolo, Golin, Benetti, Bigon, Rivera, Prati. Spurs: Jennings, Kinnear, Knowles, Mullery, England, Beal, Pratt (Naylor), Perryman, Chivers, Peters, Coates. FRIENDLY FIRE While we’ve faced Milan in four competitive matches before this season, we have also met in four pre-season fixtures. The first was during preparations for the 1986/87 campaign, when we competed for third and fourth place at the Juan Gamper tournament in Barcelona. Milan had lost 1-3 to the hosts the previous evening whilst we had gone down 3-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with PSV. Milan took a 28th minute lead when Dario Bonetti converted from a Roberto Donadoni corner. Mark Falco nodded in the 63rd minute equaliser from a Chris Hughton centre and Richard Cooke set up Gary Mabbutt to head home our 89th minute winner. Milan ended the game with 10 men after Alessandro Costacurta was sent off. According to the local Sport newspaper, the crowd numbered 89,000. Spurs: Clemence, Thomas, D, Hughton, Allen, P, Gough, Miller, Ardiles (Stevens 64), Chiedozie, Waddle (Falco 46), Hoddle (Mabbutt 46), Cooke. Milan: Galli, Costacurta, Bonetti, Baresi, Dibartolomei, Tassotti, Evani (Stroppa 79), Manzo, Galderisi, Donadoni, Zanoncelli. WEMBLEY WOE Two years later we met in the Makita Tournament at Wembley Stadium. Milan had defeated Bayern Munich the previous afternoon after we had lost to Arsenal. An eventful opening saw Mitchell Thomas head over from a Chris Waddle cross and Bobby Mimms tip over a shot from Marco van Basten. Alberigo Evani hit a shot across our goal on four minutes and Antonio Virdis gave Milan a 12th minute lead, converting from six yards following a right-wing cross. Within two minutes Milan were 2-0 up, van Basten being put through on goal by compatriot Frank Rijkaard. Paul Allen volleyed an effort wide from a Paul Gascoigne free kick and Paul Walsh went close with a similar effort. Paul Stewart saw a header cleared off the goal-line before Gascoigne thundered in a 60th minute shot from 18 yards which Giovanni Galli could only block. Terry Fenwick was on hand to snaffle the rebound. Milan: Galli, Tassotti, Mussi (Bianchi 70), Colombo (Massaro 46), Costacurta, Baresi, Donadoni, Rijkaard, van Basten, Evani, Virdis. Substitutes (not used): Pinato, Lampignotti, Mannari, Cappellini. Spurs: Mimms, Thomas, Hughton, Fenwick, Fairclough, Mabbutt, Walsh (Moran 72), Gascoigne, Waddle, Stewart, Allen. Substitutes (not used): Statham, Howells, Gray, Moncur. WINS IN MUNICH AND MINNEAPOLIS Four years after our 2011 Champions League clash, we faced Milan once again in another pre-season tournament as we met in the third/fourth place play-off at the Audi Cup. Taking place at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, the four-team competition saw us lose 2-0 to Real Madrid – Gareth Bale on target for the Spaniards – while Milan were beaten 3-0 by the host team. Mauricio Pochettino’s side competed in the tournament just three days before the season opener against Manchester United and we warmed up for that with a 2-0 win against the Serie A side thanks to goals from Tom Carroll and Nacer Chadli. The game took place on 5 August, 2015. Our most recent friendly clash with Milan came in the International Champions Cup in 2018, the third of three pre-season fixtures we played in the USA that summer. After defeating AS Roma 4-1 in San Diego and drawing 2-2 with Barcelona in Los Angeles (losing 5-3 on penalties), we headed north to Minneapolis for a final game with the Rossoneri. Held at Minnesota Vikings’ US Bank Stadium on 31 July, the only goal of the game was scored by Georges-Kevin Nkoudou two minutes into the second half. There were 18 European teams competing in the ICC, all playing three matches each, and we won the competition with the best record, thanks to a better goal difference than Borussia Dortmund and Internazionale. And the Spurs go marching on and on and on and on and... Proud partners of Tottenham Hotspur TH18_58-61_Spurs_On_Film A4 v2.indd 58 03/03/2023 13:09

With the 2022/23 season marking the launch of SPURSPLAY – the Club’s new home of exclusive live and on-demand video – ANDY GREEVES takes a look at the ways in which Tottenham Hotspur, our players and managers have featured in television, film and advertising over the years. The feature continues this evening with a look at Spurs connections to reality television shows. REALITY TELEVISION While television shows that documented unscripted, real-life situations existed beforehand, the launch of Big Brother in 2000 felt like the genesis for the now ubiquitous ‘reality television’ genre in the United Kingdom. Created by Dutchman John de Mol, the show was originally screened on Channel 4 and was hosted by Davina McCall. Originally providing a 24-hour live feed as well as a daily highlights show, Big Brother featured a group of contestants – known as ‘housemates’ – who lived together in a specially constructed house isolated from the outside world. A series of ‘evictions’ took place as the show went along with the last remaining housemate – Craig Phillips in the inaugural series – crowned as the winner and presented with a cash prize. The series took its name from the Orwellian character of the same name from the 1949 novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. With various national versions of the show broadcast across the world, Big Brother’s popularity in the United Kingdom was such that it aired annually from 2000 to 2018. It also gave rise to a spin-off series HARRY REDKNAPP WAS CROWNED ‘KING OF THE JUNGLE’ IN 2018 THFC 5 9 SPURS ON FILM And the Spurs go marching on and on and on and on and... – Celebrity Big Brother – that premiered on Channel 4 in March 2001. Celebrities who appeared on the show included a number of Spurs supporters including actor Ricky Norwood and DJ, singer and songwriter Jonas Altberg, aka Basshunter. A number of our former players also entered the Celebrity Big Brother house. Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock, who scored four goals in 58 appearances in two separate spells with us between 1986 and 1993, was on series 11 of the show and finished fifth in the contest that was won by Rylan Clark. Jamie O’Hara, who netted seven times in 56 matches for us between 2007 and 2011 was on series 19. The ‘regular’ version of Big Brother – last broadcast on Channel 5 in 2018 - is set to return to British television screens this year, with a new series to be broadcast on ITV2/ITVX. Created by London Weekend Television (LWT) and first broadcast in 2002, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! (often referred to simply as I’m a Celebrity) will have reached its 23rd series when it’s screened on ITV later this year. The show format features a group of celebrities living in basic conditions in the Australian outback (although series 20 and 21 were filmed at Gwrych Castle, Abergele, Wales) during which time they undertake challenges to try to secure extra food and treats for the camp. As the series progresses, contestants are voted off before an eventual ‘King’ or ‘Queen of the Jungle’ is crowned. Ruddock became the first former Spurs player to take part in the show back in 2004 while ex-youth team member Mark Wright – best known for his appearances on another ITV reality show - The Only SPURS FAN ANTONY COSTA ALSO APPEARED ON I’M A CELEBRITY NEIL ‘RAZOR’ RUDDOCK DURING HIS TIME ON CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER 6 0 THFC SPURS ON FILM TH18_58-61_Spurs_On_Film A4 v2.indd 60 03/03/2023 13:09

Way is Essex – was on series 11. In 2018, our former manager Harry Redknapp was crowned ‘King of the Jungle’ as he won series 18 of the show, which also featured Spurs-supporting television presenter Nick Knowles. In addition to Knowles, a number of other Spurs fans have also appeared on the show including Antony Worrall Thompson (series two) and Antony Costa (series five). “Before (winning I’m a Celebrity), it’s fair to say it would mainly be men coming up to me to talk about football,” Redknapp said. “Now, it’s women and children that will come up to speak to me too and ask about the jungle.” David Ginola came fourth in the 21st series of the show, which was broadcast in late 2021. Winner of both the Professional Footballers’ Association and the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year awards in 1999, Ginola scored 22 goals in 124 appearances for us between 1997 and 2000. He was a Football League Cup winner with us in 1999. In February 2005, The Apprentice – a business-styled reality show – was first broadcast on BBC Two. The concept of the show sees contestants compete for a prize – a job or business investment – from Lord Alan Sugar - our chairman between 1991 and 2001. Our former chief executive Claude Littner has also featured on the show, to interview the contestants, which is now in its 17th series. The fourth series of the show was won by Spurs supporter Lee McQueen. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium featured on series 16, episode eight of the show as the winning team that week were rewarded by being given the opportunity to scale The Dare Skywalk. The Dare Skywalk was also featured on another reality television series – Married at First Sight. Launched in the United Kingdom in 2015, the show sees couples matched ‘scientifically’ by a panel of experts. The contestants meet minutes before they marry. The show covers the marriage ceremony and life after, to see whether or not the couples will continue their relationships. Originally screened on Channel 4 between 2015 and 2020, the series moved to E4 in 2021. During the seventh series of the show, first screened on E4 last year, couple George Roberts and April Banbury took part in The Dare Skywalk, abseiling off the back of the South Stand here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. George has previously admitted his fear of heights, so it was quite some achievement for him to climb 46.8 metres to the top of the South Stand roof! Of course, we go into our clash with Italian giants Milan this evening looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit following Brahim Diaz’s seventh-minute goal in the San Siro on 14 February. Also trailing from the first leg going into their game tonight are Paris St Germain, who lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich on the same night we were in Milan. The Ligue 1 leaders suffered their first defeat in 41 home matches against Bayern, made all the more painful by the fact their former winger and French international Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game. PSG were much more of a threat after the introduction off the bench of talisman Kylian Mbappe, but couldn’t find a way through Bayern’s defence. Benjamin Pavard was sent off in stoppage time, but PSG couldn’t take advantage and slipped to a rare home defeat and will find it tough going at the Allianz Arena this evening. Yesterday evening, both Benfica and Borussia Dortmund went into their matches holding first leg leads, following victories over Club Brugge (2-0) and Chelsea (1-0) respectively. Meanwhile, the next set of second legs take place next Tuesday, with Manchester City and Porto hoping home advantage will see them through to the quarter-finals. City drew 1-1 with RB Leipzig in their first game on 22 February, surviving a late rally by the German side. A 27th-minute goal from Riyad Mahrez put them in front during a first half in which Pep Guardiola’s side were fairly comfortable, enjoying 74 per cent possession. But Leipzig hit back after the break and were much the better team, levelling the tie up through a Josko Gvardiol header while Benjamin Henrichs missed a glorious opportunity to win the match. City will fancy their chances at the Etihad though. It’s a tougher task for Porto, who go into their second leg at the Estadio do Dragao trailing by a single goal to Internazionale. They took the game to the hosts at the San Siro in the first game only to find Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana in inspired form and couldn’t find a way through. Instead, they lost midfielder Otavio to a late red card and were then punished four minutes from time when Romelu Lukaku struck the winner. The Last 16 second leg ties will be concluded next Wednesday, with both Liverpool and Eintracht Frankfurt facing tough tasks to qualify for the quarter-finals. Jurgen Klopp’s side head to the Bernabeu needing to make up three goals just to level the aggregate scores following a crushing 5-2 defeat at Anfield on 21 February. Despite racing into a two-goal lead inside 14 minutes through Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah, the Reds were pegged back to 2-2 by half-time as Vinicius Junior struck twice. And it all went wrong for Liverpool in the second half, goals from Eder Militao and a brace from Karim Benzema swinging the tie firmly in Real’s favour. And German side Eintracht Frankfurt will need to overturn a 2-0 defeat when they travel to Naples to face Napoli next Wednesday. The Serie A league leaders were in dominant form in the first leg in Frankfurt, goals from Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo giving them a healthy advantage. It could have been worse for Frankfurt as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw his first-half penalty saved by Kevin Trapp before Kolo Muani was sent off just before the hour mark. Napoli will certainly be favourites to progress next week. Meanwhile, the draw for the quarterfinals and semi-finals will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday 17 March. PREMIUM EXPERIENCES Whether you’re a supporter in the stands or a player on the pitch, those big nights under the lights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are euphoric… and enjoying them in our Premium spaces will take your experience to a whole new level. As we welcome Milan to our home for this stellar occasion this evening, we’ve caught up with one of our 1984 UEFA Cup winners, Spurs legend Micky Hazard, to get an understanding of what it really means to experience one of those glory, glory nights. TELL US WHAT THESE KIND OF MATCHDAYS MEAN TO YOU? “They are honestly the most magical of them all. The duel on the pitch, the atmosphere in the air, the sea of lilywhite shirts…the anticipation leading up to such a big occasion where you’re coming up against the finest clubs from the continent is unlike anything else.” HOW PROUD DID YOU FEEL TO BE A PART OF THAT UEFA CUP WINNING TEAM? “When we first qualified for Europe, I just had a feeling that it would happen. It should have happened sooner. The fact that we went on to win and did it on our own ground in front of our fans was wonderful. We got to share our joy with our fans, so pride isn’t a big enough word to describe the feeling.” YOU’VE SEEN THE CLUB’S EVOLUTION OVER THE DECADES. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM? “I spent my entire Tottenham Hotspur playing career at White Hart Lane, so I consider it my place of worship. For a new generation of fans and players, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will become the same for them. So, it’s important to remember why we have made it here – to herald a new chapter of magic and do it all over again in this spectacular stadium, which for me, is a privilege to see.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE GAME SO FAR AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM? “Definitely the UEFA Champions League quarter-final 1-0 win against Manchester City that saw us eventually make the final of the 2018/19 campaign. It was our first ever European game at the stadium and it was absolutely rocking! It’s one of NIGHTS TO REMEMBER ...WITH MICKY HAZARD 6 6 THFC PREMIUM EXPERIENCES TH18_66-67_Premium_Experiences A4 v2.indd 66 03/03/2023 13:07

the best atmospheres I’ve ever experienced, if not the best. When the atmosphere is as incredible and intense as that, nothing can compare to it.” YOU CAN BE REGULARLY SEEN IN OUR PREMIUM SPACES AT HOME MATCHES, MEETING AND GREETING GUESTS. HOW HAS TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM CHANGED THE GAME WHEN IT COMES TO PREMIUM EXPERIENCES? “Our spaces are second to none. From the moment you walk in, to stepping into the lounges and restaurants to taking your seats the stands, you feel that you’re a part of something special – whether you’re a former player like me or a guest. Whatever your taste our Premium spaces are tailored to make sure everyone has a remarkable day – even more so on a momentous occasion like a Champions League game, which is amplified in every way.” IF THERE WAS ONE EXPERIENCE YOU WOULD RECOMMEND THAT EVERY PREMIUM MEMBER HAS TO TRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “The Tunnel Club is the greatest experience you could possibly enjoy. You get to see and immerse yourself in so many different aspects of the game – from seeing the players in the tunnel before they step onto the pitch to hearing the manager’s instructions on the pitch. I’ve experienced it a number of times but I still can’t get enough of it.” WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT OUR PREMIUM EXPERIENCES? “I’m spoilt because I like every single aspect of it – both the entertaining and enjoying the entertainment myself. Either way, I love it all. Not a single stone has been left unturned in guaranteeing an amazing experience, which is what makes our Premium spaces a 10 out of 10.” AS PART OF THE LEGENDS PACKAGE, YOU GET TO MEET AND GREET FANS – WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT IT? “How you get to share the excitement of a matchday with fans. For me, interacting with supporters is the best thing about the Legends package as football would be nothing without them. Our fans love for us is unconditional and they make us who we are, which is something I never forget.” WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE MILAN GAME? “Everything. It’s a massive game against a massive club, but we’ve got a great chance. With proven match-winners such as Harry Kane and Sonny and World Cup winners in our side, anything is possible. “When Danny Thomas missed our fifth penalty against Anderlecht in the 1984 Final, our fans sang his name in support as he walked back to the halfway line. Arnór Guðjohnsen ended up missing the decisive penalty for the Belgian side and we were crowned winners. This goes to show the impact fans can have on their team, they are our 12th man. If we create the atmosphere we know we’re capable of, who’s to say we can’t win?” A MATCHDAY THAT’S LEGENDARY IN EVERY WAY By becoming a Premium Member, you can reap the rewards of the Legends package. Meet the heroes you know and love that lit up the stage playing in lilywhite, while experiencing the magical atmosphere of matchdays in the most coveted seats at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Anticipation around north London reached fever pitch ahead of our return leg with Czech side Slovan Bratislava, as our first-ever foray in the Cup Winners’ Cup continued. Bill Nicholson’s side were in good form and our 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Czechoslovakia was our first in five games. Four days after our return from eastern Europe, we went up to Old Trafford and enjoyed a 2-0 win over Manchester United to ensure we stayed top of the First Division table, level on points with Leicester City with a game in hand. It was an important win in terms of the league, but also to quickly get back on track following the disappointment in Bratislava, where we were fortunate to only concede twice and needed a superb performance from goalkeeper Bill Brown to keep us in the tie. WINTER WOES Slovan arrived in England having played just one competitive game of football in four months due to the harsh winter across Europe – and that solitary game was our first leg encounter. The Czech league came to a close in early November 1962, with Slovan beating Spartak Plzen 3-1 and, although they did embark on a worldwide tour playing friendly matches to keep their players ticking over, it remained to be seen whether they were suitably prepared to get the result they needed to progress at White Hart Lane. Their squad was full of Czech internationals including goalkeeper Viliam Schroif, defender Jan Popluhar and Anton Moravcik, Pavol Molnar and Jozef Obert, who played in their forward line. Indeed Schroif was considered as the best keeper in the world following impressive performances for his country at the 1962 World Cup in Chile the previous summer, when they lost the final to Brazil. The ‘pen THE ROAD TO HISTORY This season marks the 60th anniversary of our history-making team of 1962/63, who became the first British side to win silverware in Europe when we lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup trophy. Throughout our Euro campaign this season, we’ll be looking back at each game along the road to history and tonight, it’s the second leg of our quarter-final clash with Slovan Bratislava. QUARTER-FINAL SUMMARY Having needed a one-game play-off to negotiate their way through the first two rounds, Napoli were once again involved in a play-off in the quarter-finals as well. But this time, their luck ran out. Trailing 2-0 to OFK Belgrade following the first leg in Yugoslavia, the Italians reduced the deficit just 12 minutes into the return in Naples when Brazilian Cané scored. Three minutes before half-time though, the visitors equalised through Spasoje Samardzic to restore their two-goal aggregate lead and leave Napoli in a spot of bother. But two second half goals from Giovanni Fanello and Amos Mariani squared up the tie at 3-3 and that’s how it ended. With no away goals rule or extra time in those days, it was straight to a one-off game to decide the winner. The game was played on neutral territory with Marseille chosen as the venue, and it was the Yugoslavs who progressed. After a goal apiece in the opening quarter, Samardzic and Cané again on target for their respective teams, Fanello was sent off on 36 minutes and OFK grabbed their opportunity. Six minutes after the interval, Sreten Banovic put Belgrade ahead and they secured their place in the last four when Samardzic made it 3-1 late on. That was the only tie with any real jeopardy involved. Like ourselves, German outfit Nurnberg romped to a 6-0 home win in their clash with BK 1909 Odense from Denmark. Leading 1-0 from the first leg, they put the game to bed with three goals in five first-half minutes thanks to strikes from Max Morlock (2) and Kurt Dachlauer. Further goals after the interval from Tasso Wild, Peter Engler and Kurt Haseneder rounded off a comfortable victory. Also easing through to the semi-finals were Atletico Madrid. After holding Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv to a 1-1 draw in the first leg away from home, the Spaniards finished the job in Madrid. Two goals from Chuzo and strikes from Adelardo and Enrique Collar gave Atletico a 4-0 win as they booked their place in the last four. picture’ of him in our match programme for the second leg said: ‘Has been nicknamed ‘The Rubber Man’ and his acrobatic displays earned him the title of Czechoslovakia Footballer of the Year in 1960’. Also among their ranks was Josef Venglos, who would go on to manager the likes of Aston Villa, Celtic and the Czech national team. He featured in the first leg but didn’t play in the return. SIX OF THE BEST! White Hart Lane had already been the scene of a couple of stunning comebacks in Europe, even though our fixture with Slovan Bratislava was only the fifth European tie to be played at the ground! Both of our previous clashes against opponents from the eastern bloc had seen us lose the first leg away from home – against Gornik Zabrze and Dukla Prague during our European Cup campaign of 1961/62. On each occasion we stormed back to win in N17, that staggering 8-1 scoreline against Gornik followed by a 4-1 defeat here of Dukla Prague – and it was going to need another one of those glory, glory nights against Slovan if we were to keep our Cup Winners’ Cup hopes alive. Fortunately, we duly delivered. Roared on by an inferno of noise from the terraces, we produced a powerful performance that the Czechs – for all their international experience and technical ability - simply couldn’t live with. However, it might have been a different story had Moravcik’s early shot gone in rather than struck Bill Brown’s post. It didn’t though and instead, we hit Slovan with a flurry of first-half goals which got us back in the tie, drew level on aggregate and then saw us ahead for the first time. The visitors somehow withstood half an hour of wave after wave of Spurs pressure, but their defence could only hold out for so long. With 31 minutes gone, captain fantastic Dave Mackay collected a mis-placed pass from Popluhar and crashed home from the edge of the area. It was a goal which opened the floodgates and within nine minutes, we were ahead in the tie. With the crowd baying for more, Jimmy Greaves made it 2-2 on aggregate, picking up the ball in midfield before breezing past two defenders and driving past Schroif. And it was 3-2 overall just a minute later, Bobby Smith flying through the air to head the ball almost out of the hands of the Slovan keeper from Frank Saul’s cross. Having worked so hard to get in front, we weren’t about to relinquish the lead and after the half-time break, we stepped it up once again. Challenged by Cliff Jones, he failed to reach it and the ball ran to Greaves, who produced an exquisite lob into the empty net. That goal knocked the stuffing out of the visitors and we added two more late on, Jones heading in Tony Marchi’s cross before John White ran through to ram home our sixth on the night less than a minute later. GOALKEEPER VILIAM SCHROIF AND ANTON URBAN CAN ONLY WATCH AS JIMMY GREAVES’ LOB FINDS THE BACK OF THE NET FOR 4-0 It was another wonderful European performance in north London, full of passion and endeavour coupled with plenty of ability and emotion. The crowd certainly played their part and even Slovan coach Anton Bulla admitted the White Hart Lane faithful were a factor on the night. “Our players are technicians,” he said. “They are trained primarily to think; they cannot match such superb fitness and team spirit as Tottenham’s. And that crowd…” And so we marched on to the semifinals and yet another trip to eastern Europe after we drew Yugoslav side OFK Belgrade in the last four. We want all aspiring young Spurs players to join us on our upcoming Easter Holiday Player Development Programmes. Our Easter programmes take place across two weeks in April: Week 1 from Monday 3 April – Thursday 6 April and Week 2 from Tuesday 11 April – Friday 14 April. Train at premium venues across London, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire that provide a high-quality training environment for players to develop their skills and knowledge of the game. The structured syllabus and experienced coaches help young players to get the best out of their game and maximise their potential. PROGRAMME CONTENT Our programmes are designed to focus on developing the creativity and decisionmaking ability of all players with our technical development syllabus broken down into the following themes. • Spurs DNA (learning the club’s football philosophy) • 1 v 1 Domination (attacking vs defending) • Brilliant basics & ball mastery (passing, receiving and movement) • Exploiting overloads • Goal scoring and Finishing • Small-sided games (2v2, 3v3, 4v4) Our daily theme allows for a lot of small-sided (2v2, 3v3, 4v4) games and tournaments. This develops a greater understanding of how to play in a variety of positions and situations, as well as provides players with the technical and tactical knowledge to improve their game. As well as developing players on the pitch, our programmes aim to develop players away from the field of play by: • Develop players’ self-confidence so that they feel braver and more composed when in possession of the ball or having to defend in various situations. • Improved physical literacy based on fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination and speed) • Instilling determination to succeed and challenging them to strive for continuous improvement at every session. • Developing players’ enthusiasm, love and passion for the game. • Teach all players to respect the game, their team-mates and the opposition. • Providing a fantastic opportunity for players to make new friends who have a shared interest in football. he draw for this season’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 handed us a two-legged tie with the same opponents we faced at this stage of the competition back in 2010/11 – Milan. The stories of our past encounters with the Rossoneri, in both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup in 1971/72 are well known, as are our playing connections which include Jimmy Greaves, Edgar Davids and Christian Ziege. After November’s draw, we were fascinated to learn of another link between ourselves and the Italian giants. Spurs supporter Matt Ryan got in touch to let us know his wife and fellow One Hotspur member, Amanda, is a distant relation of Herbert Kilpin – the main founding father of the now-world famous football club, Milan. Born in Nottingham on 24 January, 1870, Kilpin was the son of a butcher called Edward Kilpin and was raised with nine older siblings at 129 Mansfield Road (now renumbered to 191 Mansfield Road) in the East Midlands city. A keen amateur footballer, Kilpin turned out for the now defunct Notts Olympic and a church team called St. Andrews while he started working as a lace warehouse assistant in Nottingham after leaving school. He moved to Turin in 1891 to work for Edoardo Bosio – an Italian-Swiss textile merchant who had links to the Nottingham-based lace manufacturer, Thomas Adams. That same year, Bosio formed the now-defunct Internazionale Torino – understood to be the first football-specific club to be created in Italy. Kilpin turned out for Internazionale between 1891 and 1899, with many crediting him as being the first Englishman to play football abroad. During this period, he played for the Turin-based club in the first two editions of the Campionato Italiano di Football – the country’s first official national football tournament which evolved over the decades to become the Divisione Nazionale (to include Serie A) in 1929. By 1898, Kilpin had already left Turin and settled in Milan with fellow Englishman and Internazionale Torino team-mate Samuel Richard Davies, who was born in Manchester on 9 November, 1867. In 1898, Kilpin and Davies were amongst the charter members that formed the ‘Milan Football and Cricket Club’ – now known as AC Milan. Kilpin is widely believed to be the man responsible for AC Milan’s famous Rossoneri (red and black) colours and ‘Il Diavolo’ (The Devil) nickname with the following quote attributed to him; After their 1899 formation, Shropshire-born Alfred Edwards became Milan’s first chairman while Kilpin became player-manager. French-born, English striker David Allison was appointed as the club’s first captain and is credited as their first goal scorer, having netted in their inaugural match – a friendly against Mediolanum – on 11 March, 1900. The strong English influence in Milan’s early history is such that the club maintain the English spelling of their city’s name as opposed to the Italian spelling, ‘Milano’. Milan became national champions for the first time in 1901. In Kilpin’s nine seasons at the club between 1899 and 1908, he was in title-winning teams once again in 1906 and 1907. Little is known about Kilpin’s life after his (assumed) retirement from football in 1908. He passed away on 22 October, 1916 at the age of 46, with the Gazzetta dello Sport describing him as “the pioneer of Italian football” as they announced his death. Despite his significant role in the creation of both Italian club football and Milan, Kilpin became something of a forgotten figure in the decades that followed. All that changed in 1998 when Milan fan and amateur historian, Luigi La Rocca, tracked down Kilpin’s grave – long thought to have been lost – in the Municipal Cemetery in Milan. FOUNDING FATHER T “WE WILL BE A TEAM OF DEVILS. OUR COLOURS WILL BE RED LIKE FIRE AND BLACK LIKE THE FEAR WE WILL INVOKE IN OUR OPPONENTS.” ANDY GREEVES tells the story of Milan co-founder Herbert Kilpin, who is a distant relation of Spurs supporter Amanda Ryan. The grave had no reference to his name, so in 1999 – Milan’s centenary year – the club paid for a new headstone as Kilpin was reburied in the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano (Monumental Graveyard) in the city. In November 2010, on the back of a petition, Kilpin was inducted into the Famedio – the main building of the Cimitero Monumentale where graves of some of the city’s most famous sons and daughters such as Alberto Ascari, Gaspare Campari, Cesare Maldini, Giuseppe Meazza and Arturo Toscanini can be found. The life and legend of Kilpin was explored in the 2016 book The Lord of Milan, written by Robert Nieri. The book, later developed into a film of the same title, is part biography/part fiction with the author admitting details of sections of Kilpin’s life were so scarce that he could not complete a full biography. Amanda’s cousin, James Kilpin, has done some research into the life of Herbert Kilpin and was the subject of an interview feature in The Guardian in March 2017 which begins by James explaining his (and Spurs supporter Amanda’s) relation to him. “William Kilpin, born around 1790, was Herbert’s great-grandfather,” James told journalist Matt McGinn. “If you come down from him, you get to me after about six generations.” With the story of Herbert Kilpin’s co-involvement in the creation of Milan having been spoken of far more frequently in recent decades, the Englishman has become something of a cult hero among the Rossoneri’s supporter base. Tifos with images of Kilpin have been displayed on the Curva Sud at the San Siro on Milan matchdays. Kilpin’s memory lives on in his home city of Nottingham too. A pub named The Herbert Kilpin (now known as The Kilpin Beer Cafe) opened on Bridlesmith Walk in the city in 2016 while a plaque honouring his place of birth on Mansfield Road was unveiled a year later. The adjacent bus stop carries information on Kilpin’s life while a bus bearing his name operates in the Nottingham area. The latest instalment of the weekly column from our SPURSPLAY commentator ROB DALY, who this week has chosen to wax lyrical about another ‘one of our own’… THE DALY COLUMN s the ball popped off his chest and hovered above the grass, Oliver Skipp was moments away from living out a Spurs fan’s dream. Deceived by the swerve and with an obstructed view, Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa could only help the young midfielder’s strike on to the underside of the bar, and into the net. It’s hard to imagine how he felt in the immediate aftermath of his 20-yard South Stand screamer, as Skipp leapt towards the corner flag chased by team-mates. He remembers, as a boy, getting the 125th anniversary shirt – the half-white, half-lightblue one from the 2007/08 season. He remembers watching Spurs train as a kid, getting the autographs of Aaron Lennon, Rafa van der Vaart and Tom Huddlestone. He remembers being worried about taking the wrong seat on the first team bus, in his early days among the squad. In November 2018, he came on for his Spurs debut at West Ham, having had A-Level history the day before, and an economics class the morning after. There have been competition debuts like his maiden Premier League appearance and his first Champions League start, which only came at San Siro last month. However, his goal and performance against Chelsea felt like a reward - not only for his long journey through the academy (he first stepped into the club’s development centre aged five) but also his work to recover from an injury-plagued 2022. He controlled play in the London derby with his passing, took the ball bravely on the half-turn and thumped in to tackles. Even deep in added time, with Spurs 2-0 up and Chelsea dejected, he rattled in to a heavy halfway line challenge to win the ball. After the game, he was a man in demand. N17 presenter Ben Haines, Clive Allen and I lined up pitch side waiting to chat to him for our SPURSPLAY show. We were his SIXTH interview. Having finished with Sky Sports, the BBC and a host of international broadcasters, he headed over to our position near the North West corner – wearing his kit, no socks, sliders instead of football boots and a coat. It was freezing and he’d just played 90 plus minutes of Premier League football – but Skipp was clearly on cloud nine, immune to the bitter cold. Watching back his goal on a pitchside monitor, a smile crept on to his face. “It feels amazing. It’s hard to describe really”, he explained. “Coming through the Academy to score your first goal against Chelsea like that, makes it special.” It was telling how swiftly Skipp mentioned the club’s Academy, and it’s hard to imagine the number of people that felt a wave of pride and joy 10 days ago. Think of coaches that supported and guided him over the years, and the staff that helped him back to full fitness this season. Think of the team-mates from his youth days and now, or his family and friends. And there are the supporters too, who have willed one of Spurs’ own to succeed in the league packed with more international star footballers than any other in the world. The second half of the Chelsea win was book-ended by goals from Academy graduates, with Harry Kane putting the game to bed. His lead is the one to follow. Oliver Skipp will be hoping the Chelsea game is not the culmination of his hard work, but just the latest of many landmarks, in a long career at the club he loves.
