6 ANGE POSTECOGLOU THFC

THFC ANGE POSTECOGLOU 7 “Every player walks through the door in the morning wanting to be better than the day before, and that mentality will stand us in good stead for the future” want to start these notes by welcoming Sonny, Yves and Pape back to the Club following their efforts at the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations over the past month. It’s a huge honour to represent your country at any level, and to do so in some of the biggest tournaments is something they should be incredibly proud of – as we all are of them. It’s great to have them back with us now and it will give everyone a boost as we head towards the final part of the season. We go into today’s match on the back of a two-game week in which we picked up four points, here against Brentford followed by an away fixture at Everton. Against Brentford, we lost our way a little in the first half, however we were outstanding for a large part of the second half, scored three great goals and showed good character to get the win. We then travelled to Everton, which is always a difficult place to go. For the most part I thought we handled it well and created some good chances. It was obviously disappointing to concede so late on, however I couldn’t fault the effort of the players. I Today we face Brighton & Hove Albion and I should like to welcome Roberto De Zerbi, his players, staff and everyone associated with the Seagulls. Roberto has built a squad of young, talented players who are tactically flexible and play with a clear identity. It was only a few weeks ago that we met each other on the South Coast. We know what a good side Brighton are and that game only served to highlight it, so it’s important that we are switched on to the challenge in front of us this afternoon. I know the players will be ready as they have shown that attitude and commitment every week, whether home or away. We are young team and still in the early stages of this rebuild, so there’s still plenty of work to be done and progress to be made. However, what I love about this squad is the room for growth and their desire to keep improving. Every player walks through the door in the morning wanting to be better than the day before, and that mentality will stand us in good stead for the future, as we strive to become a team that competes for success each season.

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 9 Considered unlucky for some, just eight players have worn our No 13 shirt since squad numbers were introduced and six of those players were goalkeepers. It was Ian Walker who first occupied the jersey in that very first season of squad numbers in 1993/94, having spent the previous two seasons sharing the No 1 shirt with Erik Thorstvedt. Manager Ossie Ardiles had to choose who would be wearing the No 1 shirt in 1993/94 and opted for the Norwegian, with Walker allocated No 13. So it was no surprise that Thorstvedt started the season in goal for us, which meant our No 13 shirt wasn’t worn until a Coca Cola Cup second round tie at Burnley, when Walker was between the sticks for the goalless draw in the first leg. The England international donned the No 13 jersey in the Premier League for the first time in a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United on 15 January 1994 and ended up featuring 14 times in the shirt that season. The following campaign, Walker was first choice and made 49 appearances with the No 13 shirt on his back – the most times the jersey was worn in any single Spurs season. With injuries hampering Thorstvedt’s career, Walker was given the No 1 shirt No.13 in that NUMBER As this season marks 30 years since the introduction of squad numbers in English football, we take a closer look at the names and numbers that have formed our matchday squads since 1993/94 – and even further back in our history. NO. 13S…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Kasey Keller 97 2. William Gallas 78 3. Ian Walker 63 4. Michel Vorm 48 5. Neil Sullivan 43 6. Espen Baardsen 29 7. Guglielmo Vicario 25 8. Danny Murphy 19 and the number 13 remained vacant for the 1995/96 season. But it was another Norwegian goalkeeper who next wore the No 13 jersey following the arrival in July 1996 of Espen Baardsen. A p r o m i s i n g ke e p e r, h e wa s

1 0 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC understudy to Walker during his first season with us and it wasn’t until the penultimate game of 1996/97 that he made his debut, wearing No 13, when he came off the bench to replace Walker in a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool. Late in the 1997/98 season and then again in early 1998/99, Baardsen was given a run of games and featured a total of 27 times in those two spells, but the arrival of George Graham in October 1998 saw Walker reinstated in goal and signalled the end of Baardsen’s Spurs career. In May 2000, Neil Sullivan brought to an end his 12-year association with Wimbledon when he joined us and immediately became our latest No 13. Making his debut in our 3-1 win at home to Ipswich Town in the 2000/01 season opener, he was almost ever-present with 43 appearances for us that term before taking over the No 1 shirt from the departing Walker. Sullivan then found himself competing with USA international Kasey Keller, who took over the No 13 shirt vacated by Sullivan when he arrived from Rayo Vallecano in August 2001. Keller first appeared in the number 13 jersey in a League Cup win over Torquay United in September before his league debut at Aston Villa in our final game of 2001. Keller went from being goalkeeping cover to a genuine first choice between the sticks and featured 41 times in 2002/03 and made 45 appearances in 2003/04 – making him our most used No 13 in our club’s history as he finished just three short of a century of games. Who was the first outfield player to wear No 13 for Spurs? That would make a great quiz question and we wonder how many supporters would have correctly guessed Danny Murphy! The experienced midfielder joined us from Charlton in January 2006 after a successful career with Liverpool and initially wore the No 8 shirt on 10 occasions during the second half of his first season. But he was allocated No 13 for the 2007/08 campaign, first wearing it off the bench in a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United on 9 September. Unfortunately though, he never quite hit top form while in north London and featured just 19 times in our No 13 jersey. Four years later, another outfield player arrived and took on the No 13 shirt, this time in the form of French defender William Gallas. Despite having played for both Arsenal and Chelsea, he won over the Spurs fans with his performances, showing all the defensive nous you’d expect from someone of his experience and helping us during that first-ever Champions League campaign of 2010/11. His 78 appearances in the No 13 shirt put him in second place in our list. Michel Vorm joined us from Swansea City in July 2014 and spent six solid years mostly as understudy to Hugo Lloris. Ever reliable when called upon, the Dutch international became our next No 13 and wore the jersey on 48 occasions during his time in N17. Finally, our current No 13 has been nothing short of a revelation since his arrival from Empoli last summer. IN OPPOSITION… Similar to Spurs, most of the names on the list of Brighton players to have worn squad number 13 are goalkeepers, but their most significant No 13 is an outfield player. German midfielder Pascal Gross joined the Seagulls from FC Ingolstadt in May 2017 and was immediately given the No 13 jersey. During his almost seven-year stay with Brighton, he has now racked up an impressive 243 appearances in the shirt, scoring 31 goals along the way. Other No 13s for the Seagulls include keepers David Stockdale, Mitch Walker and Richard Martin. NO. 13s… APPEARANCES ALL-TIME (1946 TO PRESENT) Players to have worn the No 13 shirt for us prior to the introduction of squad numbers in 1993/94 is a very short list! Again though, it consists of goalkeepers with both Erik Thorstvedt and Kevin Dearden having worn No 13 during the 1992/93 campaign – the first time that number ever featured at Spurs. It’s first-ever appearance came in a home defeat to Coventry City in August 1992 when Thorstvedt donned the jersey, replacing Ian Walker during the game. That exact same substitution was made at Wimbledon on 25 October, Thorstvedt again wearing No 13. And, on 12 April 1993, it was the Norwegian that was replaced in our 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, with Dearden taking his place for his Spurs debut with No 13 on his back. 1. Erik Thorstvedt 2 2. Kevin Dearden 1 MICHEL VORM WORE 13 ON 48 OCCASIONS FOR SPURS Guglielmo Vicario’s performances in goal this season have been one of the key reasons for the feelgood factor around Ange Postecoglou’s side.

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 1 1 One of the rarer numbers to have ever been featured here at Spurs, just four players have worn the No 47 shirt for us. The first player to wear the jersey was one that carried arguably the most famous of Tottenham Hotspur-related names. Jake Nicholson – no relation to our legendary former player and manager Bill – came through our Academy to sign professional forms with us in July 2010. An energetic midfielder, he made his one and only senior Spurs appearance early in the 2011/12 season. He wasn’t allocated a Premier League squad number but was registered in our Europa League squad and given the No 47 shirt. The same applied to three other youngsters – Ryan Fredericks (Euro squad No 43), Dean Parrett (No 56) and a certain Harry Kane (No 37). Harry Redknapp’s side beat Scottish outfit Heart of Midlothian 5-0 in the Europa League play-off first leg at Tynecastle and so the manager gave the youngsters an opportunity in the north London return, with Kane and Fredericks both starting. In the 76th minute, Nicholson was given his Spurs debut when he came on to replace Jake Livermore, and our No 47 shirt was given its first appearance. Attacking midfielder Josh Onomah was handed the No 47 for the 2014/15 season as he looked to make his breakthrough into the first team. Another Academy graduate who possessed pace, dribbling skills and an eye for a pass, his debut came in an FA Cup third round replay against Burnley in January 2015. Coincidentally, he also came off the bench in the 76th minute, replacing Andros Townsend after we’d come from 2-0 down to lead 4-2. Onomah’s talents saw him given a more prominent squad number for the next two seasons and he went on to wear the No 25 shirt on 31 occasions before season-long loans at Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday. He left us for Fulham in August 2019. Like Nicholson previously, George Marsh was another young Academy graduate to wear the No 47 shirt on his one and only appearance in our colours. Also a midfielder, he stepped off the No.47 NO. 47s… APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Jack Clarke 4 2. Jake Nicholson 1 3. Josh Onomah 1 4. George Marsh 1 bench in the 65th minute of our record 7-0 win in an FA Cup third round tie at Tranmere Rovers, taking over from Heung-Min Son. The only player to have worn our No 47 jersey more than once is Jack Clarke. Signed from Leeds United in July 2019, he returned to Elland Road on loan for the 2019/20 season and had a loan spell with QPR before making his debut for us in October 2020, when he came on for Carlos Vinicius in the closing stages of our Europa League home win over LASK. He also appeared off the bench wearing the No 47 shirt against Ludogorets and Marine that season, before making his final Spurs appearance the following campaign, as a half-time substitute in our 1-0 defeat to Pacos de Ferriera in Europa Conference League action.

THFC NEWS 1 3 for Saturday 9 March, has been moved to Sunday 10 March and kicks off at 1pm, while the away game against Fulham on Saturday 16 March now kicks off at 5.30pm. Both games are live on Sky Sports. We announced last week that we have reached agreement for Lucas Bergvall to join the Club from Swedish Allsvenskan side Djurgarden. The midfielder has agreed a deal that will run until 2029 and he will join us on 1 July. Turning 18 on the day he signed (2 February), Lucas has achieved a great deal in his short career so far. He was only 16 when he first played for IF Brommapojkarna (BP) in the Superettan, the second tier of Swedish football, and featured 11 times as BP gained promotion to the Allsvenskan in 2022. news DESK His performances caught the eye of clubs across Europe and Lucas opted to stay in Stockholm and join his brother, Theo, at Djurgarden. Lucas progressed again last season, making 25 appearances (out of 30) as his side finished fourth in the Allsvenskan. He played 29 times in all competitions, scoring three goals, taking his tally of senior appearances in Sweden to 42. On the international stage, Lucas is a senior Sweden international, making his debut in January against Estonia. He has also represented his country at Under-21, Under-19 and Under-17 levels. Heung-Min Son, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have all returned to the Club following their exploits for their countries in international competition. Captain of South Korea, Son featured in all six of their AFC Asian Cup matches and scored three times as they reached the semi-finals, only to lose 2-0 to Jordan on Tuesday. The tournament was played in Qatar and Son helped his side progress out of Group E, scoring in Korea’s draws with Jordan and Malaysia while they also beat Bahrain. He scored his penalty in Korea’s shoot-out win over Saudi Arabia in the Last 16 and netted in the 2-1 extra time victory against Australia in the quarter-finals. Son took his overall statistics to 44 goals in 122 appearances. At the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast, Bissouma made four appearances for Mali as they progressed to the quarter-finals before losing after extra time to the host nation. He came on for the additional 30 minutes against Ivory Coast as his side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, while also stepping off the bench in group games with South Africa and Tunisia. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes of Mali’s goalless draw with Namibia in Group E. Meanwhile, Sarr’s Senegal also exited the competition to Ivory Coast, who beat them on penalties in the Last 16. Our young midfielder remained on the bench for his nation’s first Group C game against Gambia but started the other three matches at the tournament, against Cameroon, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Two of our fixtures in March have been picked for live TV coverage following the latest round of the Premier League broadcast selection process. THFC F R O M T H E VAU LT 1 7 FOOD IN THE ARCHIVE Banqueting menus may not be the first thing which springs to mind when thinking about the memorabilia collection of a football club, but these are a feature of the Spurs archive. These were not just club meals held at a local restaurant or a group trip to the pub. These were much grander events! In 1921, the Club held a dinner to celebrate the ‘return of the FA Cup to the South’, referring to our victory in the final against Wolves. The meal was held at the Holborn Restaurant, the same restaurant which was used to host a series of dinners for participating athletes in the 1908 Olympic Games and the location for the founding of the British Chess Federation in 1904. No longer standing, the building has been replaced by a large office block. The menu for many of these banquets was printed in French only. To eat like a Spurs director in 1921 you would need to order things like pommes noisettes, punch a la Romaine, and consommé fermier; several of the dishes served at this banquet were also served on the Titanic, likely because this was the food which was in fashion at the time. Many of these banquet booklets contained additional information the attender would need, specifically surrounding toast lists. The list usually included the Royal Family, the Football Association and the Football League, and the Players and the Officials. The 1921 booklet also included the players of the 1901 team, whilst the 1951 list included a toast to ‘the ladies’, although the toast lists became much simpler over time and by the 1983 example, it had disappeared altogether. The 1983 dinner menu we have is for the UEFA Cup third round, second leg against Bayern Munich, where the chairman and directors of our German guests came for dinner in the boardroom at White Hart Lane. Although a less grand location than The Savoy, where they dined in the 1960s, the meal on offer was still a lavish one consisting of six courses with a much more English feel, despite the few French dishes which make up the menu. The inclusion of entertainment also varies across the years. Early on, in 1921, there was a full song list included in the booklet, for the selection of music which accompanied dinner. We also have the booklet for a Spurs Season Ticket Holder’s dinner and cabaret, which had a much more relaxed style of entertainment in the form of music for dancing and other acts. Banquet menus like this show changes in food and entertainment trends across the time periods we have examples for. The movement from French to English on the menus and the gradual inclusion of women at the events all points to wider cultural and societal changes. 1 8 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 1 9 A RISING SARR lways wearing an infectious smile that lights up a room, it quickly becomes evident that Pape Matar Sarr is loving every second of being a Spurs player. The 21-year-old midfielder has quickly established himself as a key member of Ange Postecoglou’s all-action system to shine brightly for us in what is only his second season in English football. He’s featured in 19 of our 23 matches in the Premier League so far this campaign, starting 16, and scored his first goal for the Club with the opener in our 2-0 win over Manchester United back in August before notching in our 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve. Such is his star quality and early season form, Pape was rewarded with a new contract, which will run until 2030, at the beginning of this year, with the Senegal international saying he’s loving life in north London and feels part of the Spurs ‘family’. “It’s a great feeling, being part of things here at Tottenham,” said Pape. “It has become like a family to me now, so it makes me happy to have renewed my contract with the Club. “The view is to stay here for as long as possible so I can really express myself on the pitch, enjoy the experience to the full with the fans and push on to win trophies. “I try to enjoy each match as it comes. I wanted to make this a great season for us all, and a good one for me.” Affectionately nicknamed ‘little Sonny’ by Heung-Min Son due to our Club captain taking him under his wing and recognising similar personality traits, behind Pape’s smile and softly-spoken nature sits a steely determination and relentless work ethic that has seen the midfielder overcome challenges on his journey to becoming a regular starter under Ange. Signed from FC Metz in the summer of 2021, he returned to the French side on a season-long loan and played WORDS BY WILL HOLDERNESS As we prepare to face Brighton & Hove Albion this afternoon, we caught up with the softly-spoken yet determined PAPE MATAR SARR, who has put pen to paper on a new deal until 2030 and enjoyed quite the rise to become a crucial cog in our midfield this season. A “In my view, it’s been a lot of hard work which is now beginning to pay dividends a little”

2 0 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 1 predominantly in a defensive midfield role in what was a difficult campaign for Les Grenats marked by their relegation to the second tier. Then, upon his return to Hotspur Way last term, Pape’s first season in England was more of a transitional one where he had to be patient for first team opportunities in a 3-4-3 formation that used two central midfielders, with his debut only materialising on New Year’s Day against Aston Villa in 2023. Understandably, adapting to life in a new country presented its fair share of hurdles, but noteworthy breakthrough performances last season against Arsenal – his first league start – and Milan – his Champions League debut – showcased what a serious talent we had emerging from within the engine room. With Ange’s arrival ahead of the 2023/24 season bringing a different look and feel to the side, our Head Coach placed new tactical demands in a 4-3-3 system where midfielders are asked to be quite multi-functional and fluid. Considering his age at just 21, Pape has really embraced the challenge of playing in this demanding midfield role and he is now enjoying the fruits of his labours after putting in a lot of hard work to improve his game and feature more prominently this term. “In my view, it’s been a lot of hard “We work together as a unit in the midfield and whoever is selected to play, we all try to complement each other”

2 2 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC work which is now beginning to pay dividends a little,” explained Pape. “I’ve never stopped striving, always putting the work in, because when I came here, I came out of a pretty difficult season, arriving as I did from France, so there were a lot of changes for me to adapt to. “But I never stopped and just kept up with my hard work in training. Now I’ve been reaping the rewards of all that hard work this season, starting matches, scoring goals and signing my new contract, so yes, I’m very happy. I try to enjoy my football, to help the team the best I can and to draw benefit from every match that I play.” Nominated alongside his close friend and mentor, Yves Bissouma, for the 2023 Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) Player of the Year award back in November, his early season form and consistent performances have really caught the eye as he glides around the pitch, weighing in with four goal involvements – adding assists against Bournemouth and Chelsea – to go alongside his tireless work rate that is a key facet of his all-round game. Seeing his best position as a dynamic number eight, we’ve seen throughout this campaign what he can offer with his technique, power and boundless energy in many different areas. Take his first Spurs goal, for example, a typical lung-busting supporting run from deep to steer home Dejan Kulusevski’s cross in front of the South Stand, or his surging dribble and clinical finish from just outside the area in our home win over the Cherries on New Year’s Eve. He has an eye for a pass, too. Such as the perfectly-weighted throughball assist - with his so-called weaker foot - for James Maddison to score at Bournemouth, and his prominent role in our 2-1 win at Crystal Palace – his dart to the byline and pass to ‘Madders’ that led to our opener – while his pinpoint switch of play to Brennan Johnson was key to Sonny adding a crucial second goal. Then there is the defensive side to his game. Not only his work rate to press relentlessly and ability to cover ground in transitions, but also the way he stifles attacks through his excellent ball-winning ability – he is averaging 7.17 ball recoveries per 90 minutes,

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 3 second only to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the squad – to relieve pressure on the team. “We work together as a unit in the midfield and whoever is selected to play, we all try to complement each other because the team relies on us a lot,” he said. “My role is practically to play as a number eight, so I try to mount attacks and do my defensive duties too, as the coach wants me to. I try to score goals too, all to help the team where I can. “I play a bit further forward and I know I could have scored other goals this season because I’d missed one or two chances in games, but that’s how it goes. The Premier League season is a long one and I’m sure I’ll go on to score more. “I felt it was liberating to score at home – I love to score at our stadium as the fans are always 100 per cent behind us, so yes, I love scoring here and sharing those moments with them.” Part of the Senegal squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in 2022, Pape recently became the first Spurs player ever to appear at two different AFCON tournaments in this year’s competition, starting three of their four games as Senegal’s title defence was ended by hosts Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties in the Round of 16 – despite our midfielder dispatching his spot-kick. Back in our colours with a 26-minute cameo appearance in our most recent 2-2 draw at Everton, his timely return ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion’s visit to N17 is a huge boost to Ange’s midfield options against a Seagulls side who got the better of us in the reverse fixture in December. A huge favourite amongst his team-mates and fans alike, the young midfielder cannot wait to be back out there in front of our home fans and has vowed to give his all to repay their faith shown in him and help maintain our push to finish the season as brightly as possible. “I want to be back out there for these fans who support me so solidly and with so much love,” affirmed Pape. “I can only repay them for those things in the best way I can, by always trying to play my best in every match and scoring goals for them, and I want to continue with our great season, as we all want.” “I love to score at our stadium as the fans are always 100 per cent behind us”

Results soon improved, however, with De Zerbi guiding the club to a seventh-place league finish as well as the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley, where they lost to Manchester United on penalties. He’s previously managed in his homeland with the likes of Palermo and Sassuolo, as well as in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk. Only a matter of weeks have passed since we last faced Roberto De Zerbi’s side – we went down to a disappointing defeat on the south coast over the festive period. The Seagulls then began the new year with a goalless draw at West Ham, before victory in another away game, at Stoke in the FA Cup. An impressive cup victory away at Sheffield United was then followed up by a disappointing 4-0 defeat on the road at Luton Town. However, they bounced back with an excellent 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in their last outing. SINCE LAST TIME… MANAGER PROFILE: ROBERTO DE ZERBI CLUB INFO

Jack Hinshelwood gave the hosts the lead early on, with a pair of Joao Pedro penalties and a fantastic Pervis Estupinan strike giving the home side a commanding lead. However, we struck back as Alejo Veliz opened his goalscoring account before Ben Davies further reduced the arrears. But we’d left ourselves with a mountain to climb as the minutes ran out. MARTIN CHIVERS Legendary goalscorer who still sits fourth on our all-time top scorers list with 174 goals during his eight-year spell in N17. And there were no goals after 89 minutes of our fixture with City until Sergei Rebrov finally ended our drought with a late winner. EVERTON 1-2 SPURS 10.02.93 GOODISON PARK We were in the middle of a six-game winning run when we travelled to Goodison Park in 1993. THFC M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N 3 5 COUNTDOWN SPURS 2-1 BRIGHTON 26.12.19 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM We had to come from behind to beat Brighton on Boxing Day in 2019 to move up to fifth place in the Premier League. The visitors had the better of the first half and took the lead through Adam Webster but we drew level in the 53rd minute as Harry Kane drilled home after Mat Ryan parried his first effort. Dele Alli’s sublime lob won us the points. SPURS 1-0 BRIGHTON 23.04.19 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM Brighton were only our fourth-ever visitors to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when we met in April 2019 and there was late drama on the day. The Seagulls were without a goal in seven games and looked like they were going to hold us to a draw until Christian Eriksen drove in an 88th-minute winner to boost our top four hopes. SPURS 2-1 BRIGHTON 08.09.79 WHITE HART LANE Our first-ever Football League home win over Brighton came back in 1979. We’d drawn 0-0 when we met in the Second Division two years earlier but won this Division One fixture thanks to a penalty from Glenn Hoddle and a strike from Gerry Armstrong. Brian Horton scored the Seagulls goal. CRISTIAN ROMERO BRIGHTON 0-2 SPURS 16.03.22 Signed from Juventus in the summer of 2021, Cristian Romero was coming towards the end of his first season at Spurs when he scored down at the AMEX Stadium. The centre-half deflected Dejan Kulusevski’s shot past Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez to give us a 37th-minute lead, with Harry Kane wrapping up the points on the south coast with his seventh goal in six games. OSSIE ARDILES BRIGHTON 0-2 SPURS 31.01.81 Midfield maestro Ossie Ardiles marked his return to the team with a goal at Brighton’s old Goldstone Ground in our 2-0 win back in January 1981. Having missed a few games through injury, the Argentine star was back and scored with a right-foot finish after a great flick from Garth Crooks set him free. Crooks scored our second in a game in which we wore yellow shorts with our white shirt! SEASON 1982/83 There have been 28 competitive meetings between ourselves and Brighton, with four of them coming during 1982/83 as we faced off in the First Division and the League Cup. It was a strange season for the Seagulls under manager Jimmy Melia, promoted from Chief Scout to take charge of the side. They struggled in the First Division and ultimate ended up bottom of the table but produced their then best-ever FA Cup run to reach the final. Our first two meetings against Brighton that campaign came in the League Cup after we were drawn against them in the second round. The first leg took place at White Hart Lane and it finished all square, Garry Brooke netting for us from the penalty spot while Tony Grealish scored for the visitors. We edged into round three thanks to a 1-0 win at the Goldstone Ground, Garth Crooks with the only goal of the game. Our last match of 1982 saw the Seagulls visit N17 for our first league fixture against them that term. We were in patchy form under Keith Burkinshaw, but goals from Ricky Villa and Chris Hughton gave us the points. By the time we travelled to the south coast for the return, Brighton were bottom of the table. Their hopes of survival weren’t helped when Graham Roberts scored a 25-yard free-kick but it all changed late on. First Chris Ramsey and Tony Galvin were both dismissed before Steve Gatting and Gerry Ryan scored to turn the game Brighton’s way. It wasn’t enough for the Seagulls though, who couldn’t escape the drop and lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. 3 6 OPPOSITION VIEW THFC fter spells with Gillingham, Fulham and Cardiff City, how did you come to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2000? Micky Adams (then Brighton manager), who I had previously played for at Fulham, had come in for me the season before I ended up signing for Brighton. I was about to sign a new contract with Cardiff at the time. My wife was pregnant and even though we loved it where we were living in the Forest of Dean, she decided she wanted to live closer to her mum in the South East. Brighton came in again for me that summer, I spoke to Micky and signed for them. Things fell into place for us really. You spent nearly seven seasons with the Seagulls. How do you look back on your time there? We had three promotions and two relegations in total, so there was rarely a dull moment! Amongst that, we had three promotions in four years which included back-to-back title successes (Division Three in 2000/01 and Division Two in 2001/02). It was great playing for Brighton…we had a good bunch of lads down there. We worked hard for each other and we wanted to be successful. There was the attitude of playing each game like it was our last. We were always well-prepared, well-drilled and we gave it everything. What was the experience like of playing at the Withdean Stadium – Albion’s temporary home ground at the time? It was certainly a unique experience. It became ‘our’ Withdean, our little fortress. We had big clubs, like West Ham and Leeds come to visit and they didn’t like it. It was a bit of a leveller and as I say, we had players with a hunger and determination to succeed, so we were able to do well. What was it like playing with Bobby Zamora at Brighton, who went on to sign for Spurs in 2003? Bobby was different class and a talisman for us during a successful period. Bobby sometimes played up front on his own and we could always rely on him to hold the ball up and bring others into play as well as him obviously being a great finisher too. Not only was he a fantastic player for us, he was a downto-earth lad too. You played and scored in an FA Cup third round tie between Spurs and Brighton at White Hart Lane on 8 January, 2005. What are your memories of that game? It was a good draw for us and one we were really excited about. On the day, we played well and we were really unlucky not to come away with at least a draw. It was one of those where we knew we’d given everything against a Premier League team and as a footballer, as long as you’ve given 110%, you can hold your head up high, even in defeat. I liked White Hart Lane. I used to visit there once a season with the grassroots team I was playing for at the time. I can remember watching players like Glenn Hoddle there. Your second half free-kick made it 1-1 before Robbie Keane eventually won it for Spurs late on… On a personal level, it was obviously a good feeling scoring in the game. It’s a shame my other effort in the first half, which smashed against the crossbar, didn’t go in. I don’t think Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson would have got it if it was on target. OPPOSITION VIEW A Each matchday, ANDY GREEVES speaks to a player that formerly turned out for our visitors. Today, RICHARD CARPENTER – who scored 23 goals in 252 appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion between 2000 and 2007 – recalls past encounters with Spurs.

THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 3 7 It was a great strike to see us off on the day from Robbie Keane. We more than matched Tottenham other than that moment and did enough to gain a replay or even win, in my opinion. But they demonstrated what top-level players can do. He had one chance and scored. He had his back to goal before rifling it in on the volley. Do you have any other memories of playing against Spurs during your career? Yes, another FA Cup third round tie when I was at Fulham and we played at White Hart Lane (on 5 January, 1998). Jurgen Klinsmann was playing for Spurs at the time. When I was a Fulham player, I used to get nicknamed ‘Jurgen’ by the Fulham fans, who said I looked like him. This particular match was on Sky Sports and I remember being asked to do a dual interview with Klinsmann before the match. I turned that down because I thought it was a bad omen to speak to him before the game. It seemed the right thing to do was to only speak to Tottenham players after the match, and after we had hopefully got a result. When you departed then-League One side Brighton in 2007, did you have the feeling then that the Seagulls could become the established Premier League club we know today? There was always that potential at Brighton and I felt towards the end of my spell there, it was only a matter of time before the club got to the Premier League with the new ground on the way, the fan base, the size of the city etc. Brighton was something of a sleeping giant from a football perspective and it’s great to see that potential recognised now. The recruitment has been so good at Brighton…the players they’ve signed have done very well and the players they’ve sold, they’ve made a lot of money on. In the modern game especially, operating like that is how you can survive as a club. Brighton chairman Tony Bloom has done brilliantly for the Albion. Since they’ve moved into the new ground, they’ve not looked back. They’ve got a really good squad there. Roberto De Zerbi has done a good job there and we see a club that’s in the top half of the Premier League, competing in Europe. It’s fantastic. What have you made of Spurs this season? Ange Postecoglou has done a great job at Spurs, turning things around very quickly. When they are on-song, Tottenham are a very dangerous opponent. They are a massive club, they always have been, and will continue to attract top players. “Roberto De Zerbi has done a good job there and we see a club that’s in the top half of the Premier League, competing in Europe. It’s fantastic.” RICHARD HAS BEEN IMPRESSED WITH ROBERTO DE ZERBI’S WORK AT BRIGHTON

THFC T H E D A LY C O L U M N 3 9 Royal (25), Richarlison (26) and Rodrigo Bentancur (26) can be foundational parts of this team for years to come, entering their peak along with James Maddison (27), Yves Bissouma (27) and Guglielmo Vicario (27). Plus there are the likes of Ashley Phillips (18), Alejo Veliz (20), Jamie Donley (19), Dane Scarlett (19), Alfie Devine (19) and Alfie Dorrington (18) who have been around the first team. “For us, it’s a constant evolution of trying to inch forward to become the team we want to be. We’re still at the early stages of that,” said Postecoglou recently. This team is enjoyable to watch now – but one can only imagine where it’s heading. rom the team’s age profile to long-term contracts, Spurs have subtly, yet substantially, rebuilt the squad. The team is packed with some of Europe’s top young talents, supplemented most recently by the signing of 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall. So, with the transfer window shut, a shortened injury list and the international players back, it’s a good time to take stock as to where Tottenham Hotspur’s squad is right now. I’d argue it’s the most exciting group of players here since the early years of Mauricio Pochettino – one radically different in personnel even compared to just last season. To highlight that, it’s worth noting Spurs had the third oldest average starting XI in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign – 27 years and 356 days. It’s now amongst the youngest. In September’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal, for example, the average age of the team was just over 24. Ben Davies (30) and Heung-Min Son (31) are the only outfield players in their thirties. Their absence from the recent game at Manchester United, also meant not a single Spurs player at Old Trafford was part of the 23-man matchday squad for the 2019 Champions League final. In fact, the departing of Harry Kane in the summer along with Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris in the January window, has really marked the end to that era. “I haven’t felt it’s been anyone else’s team but mine from the first day,” explained Ange Postecoglou recently. “But I’ve said a few times, the club made a conscious decision to change the way we went about things and, for that to happen, you need change in personnel.” For all the plaudits there have been for Spurs this season, it’s clear this team is a work in progress. The Head Coach pointed to this post-Manchester City, reflecting upon the European Champions as “a top team – they’re the benchmark. We’re not there yet.” But when you look at the ages within the squad, the potential is frightening. Pape Matar Sarr (21), Destiny Udogie (21), Radu Drǎguşin (22), Micky van de Ven (22), Brennan Johnson (22), Dejan Kulusevski (23), Pedro Porro (24), Oliver Skipp (24) and Manor Solomon (24) all have long-term contracts. Sarr and Udogie this season, for example, have signed deals to 2030. THFC THE SPURS SHIRT 4 1 A new edition of The Spurs Shirt book, which chronicles the history of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur jersey, is now on sale in the Spurs Shop. This highly-acclaimed official publication tells the club’s story through an incredible collection of historic match worn jerseys and this new, fully revised and updated edition, includes a rare one-off cup final shirt This is one of the more intriguing Tottenham Hotspur shirts of the modern era and has a Holy Grail status amongst Spurs collectors because it is a one-off shirt produced for a special occasion due to a highly unusual set of circumstances. After reaching the 2002 League Cup final, Spurs lost the coin toss to decide which team would have choice of colours and Blackburn Rovers selected their traditional white-and-blue-halved shirts. Unfortunately, this kit clashed with both Tottenham’s home and away kits, causing a huge problem for kit supplier adidas whose deal to supply the club was due to finish at the end of the season. It meant that adidas had to produce a whole new strip for the final that they were unable, or unwilling, to mass produce and sell commercially.  In the event, the kit manufacturer produced an emergency set of approximately 60 of these yellow and blue shirts for the game at great expense, but it was never made available to buy as a replica. Consequently, it is now one of the most sought after of all modern-day Spurs match shirts. During this period domestic finals were played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff rather than at Wembley, which was being rebuilt, and with the arena’s roof closed it was Britain’s first major ‘indoor’ football match. Unfamiliar surroundings, then, and it showed in the performance as Spurs succumbed to a disappointing 2-1 defeat. Because of the unusual circumstances that meant the yellow and blue adidas shirt worn in the final was not going to be available to supporters – even though demand was likely to be huge should Spurs have secured victory – the decision was made to produce a complete set of game-specific branded home shirts. Had Spurs beaten Rovers, the players would have changed into these shirts before lifting the trophy. The shirts that were prepared were standard white replica home shirts, customised for the final with the requisite logos and match details for the trophy presentation. The full set of shirts was then bagged up and taken to Cardiff for the final. Kit man Roy Reyland took them into the dugout, but after Blackburn won the match the bag remained unopened and the jerseys sadly never saw the light of day. The shirts did survive, however, and a few have made it into the hands of collectors and, indeed, onto the pages of The Spurs Shirt book. 4 2 SPURS WOMEN THFC LATE LEVELLER DENIES US ON MERSEYSIDE We were made to rue missed chances after Liverpool netted a stoppage-time equaliser in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. Leading through Celin Bizet’s goal 19 minutes from time at a windswept Prenton Park, we saw two golden opportunities to kill the game off slip away in the latter stages as Amanda Nilden hit the post before Shuang Wang was denied by goalkeeper Rachael Laws. Having worked hard to get our noses in front earlier in the game, we looked good value to see out the game at that point but the hosts had other ideas, substitute Marie Hobinger firing home from the edge of the box in the first of seven added minutes to make it 1-1 as we were forced to settle for a share of the spoils. It was a real sucker-punch at the end of a gruelling game, although Liverpool might have felt they were worthy of their point over the course of the contest. Indeed, it was a game of few clear-cut opportunities until the last 20 minutes. Ceri Holland tried to find a breakthrough for the hosts a couple of times before the break while Barbora Votikova smothered Emma Koivisto’s shot after initially skewing a clearance straight to the Liverpool player, with our best opportunity of the first half coming in stoppage time when Nilden’s cross from the left was met by a downward header from Martha Thomas six yards out, but it proved a routine stop for Laws on her line. We finally took the lead when Thomas did well to find space on the right side of the box, with her cut-back nudged over the advancing goalkeeper by Bizet in the middle. Three minutes later, Nilden went clean through on goal but after her shot beat Laws, it agonisingly cannoned back off the base of the far post. Wang proved a lively influence off the bench, Jess Naz almost latching onto her well-weighted through ball before the China international was herself denied by a big Laws block from the left angle inside the box with just a minute of normal time remaining. We would come to regret those missed opportunities, as Charlotte Grant was robbed in the right-back area and the ball was worked to Hobinger, who fired inside the near post on her right foot from the edge of the area to the delight of the home faithful. Liverpool: Laws, Fisk, Fahey (c) (Kiernan 78), Bonner, Koivisto (Parry 78), Nagano, Holland, Bo Kearns (Hobinger 68), Matthews, van de Sanden (Lawley 61), Roman Haug. Spurs: Votíková, Grant, Turner, Bartrip, Nildén, Athinen (Graham 61), Summanen, Bizet (Wang 82), Thomas, Clinton (Petzelberger 90+2), England (c) (Naz 61). Substitutes: Spencer, Bühler, Vinberg, Ayane, Brazil. NEW DEAL FOR KIT We are delighted to announce that Kit Graham has signed a new contract with the Club which will run until June 2025. A player that has continued to develop since her move from Charlton Athletic in August, 2019, she has flourished in a new position under Robert Vilahamn as a midfielder in the exciting brand of football on display this season. After 14 years at the Addicks, where she helped them to promotion to the FA Women’s Championship before scoring an impressive 16 goals in 19 games in her maiden campaign in the FAWC and was named the FAWC Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season, she arrived in north London ahead of our first season in the WSL and has since made 73 appearances in Lilywhite. She carved her name in Club history during the 2021/22 campaign, becoming the first Women’s player to score at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 1-0 victory over Birmingham City. WELCOME ARAYA! Young forward Araya Dennis has signed a professional contract with the Club which will run until 2026 and she will remain at FA Women’s Championship side Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the campaign. The versatile 18-year-old spent her youth career at Arsenal and has experience at Watford, while previously representing England at youth level. She has spent the first half of the current campaign at Palace, featuring in 12 of their FA Women’s Championship games, scoring twice, as they push for promotion to Barclays Women’s Super League, sitting fifth in the table and five points behind the league leaders. The forward has represented England at under-17 level, playing at the UEFA Women’s Under-17 European Championship last summer, where the young Lionesses reached the semi-finals. CITY STEAL THE POINTS A goal in each half saw Manchester City secure a 2-0 victory at Brisbane Road in Women’s Super League action recently, despite a spirited display from Robert Vilahamn’s side. An unfortunate own-goal from Amy Turner handed City the lead in the early stages but, from that point onwards, we responded positively and were inches away from bringing the scores level as Martha Thomas had a goal ruled out for offside. City delivered a sucker punch goal after our bright response, Khadija Shaw firing home at the near-post just six minutes into the second half to claim her 13th goal of the WSL campaign. Jess Naz and Bethany England both had opportunities in the closing minutes, but we were ultimately unable to find a way back into the game as we fell to our first defeat since the turn of the year. 4 4 UNDER-21S THFC WINNING RUN ENDS AGAINST POSH Our Under-21s were punished on the counter-attack as Peterborough United staged an upset, winning 3-0 in our final Premier League Cup group game last Saturday (3 February). Having already progressed to the round of 16 with a late win over Bristol City the previous midweek, the points weren’t essential here but we were left frustrated as the Posh twice robbed us of possession to take a 2-0 first-half lead through Pemi Aderoju’s double at St Albans City’s Clarence Park. Peterborough captain Charlie O’Connell was sent off two minutes after the break but we couldn’t make the extra man advantage count as Will Lankshear had shouts for a penalty waved away in the 80th minute before, four minutes from time, the away side countered again to win a corner which Emmanuel Fernandez headed in. The result ended our 100 per cent winning record against Academy opposition at this level, which had run for the entirety of the season to span a remarkable 16 games. Spurs: Maguire, Robson (McKnight 46), Ashcroft (Cassanova 46), Andiyapan (Lyons-Foster 45+8), Linton, Abbott (c), John, Donley (Hall 60), Williams (Ajayi 73), Lankshear, Soonsup-Bell. WEST HAM MATCH MOVED Our upcoming home Premier League 2 fixture against West Ham United has been switched to Hotspur Way. The match will now take place next Saturday (17 February), kick-off 12pm, having previously been scheduled for next Friday night at Stevenage. LATE WINNER AGAINST ROBINS A late winner from in-form Will Lankshear saw our Under-21s overcome a stubborn Bristol City side to progress to the Premier League Cup knockout stages on 30 January. The striker came on with 15 minutes remaining and duly delivered as he headed home with a minute to spare at Clarence Park. Prior to that, Will Andiyapan had come closest with a header that skimmed the upright on 25 minutes but the better chances fell to the Robins either side of half-time as Aaron Maguire did well to keep out Omar Taylor-Clarke’s deflected attempt before Ephraim Yeboah somehow blazed over from eight yards UNDER — 21S UNDER — 21S GEORGE ABBOTT LOOKS FOR A WAY THROUGH AGAINST PETERBOROUGH

LANKSHEAR TREBLE SINKS VILLA Will Lankshear hit a hat-trick as we twice came from behind to beat Aston Villa 5-3 and continue our perfect record in the Premier League 2 on 27 January. Despite twice falling behind in the first half through Rory Wilson and Kyrie Pierre, Lankshear got us level on both occasions with strikes either side of the break before Damola Ajayi and Jude Soonsup-Bell put us ahead and then out of the reach of our visitors at the Lamex Stadium. With 18 minutes still to play, the forward then completed his treble, spinning in the box before producing an unerring finish. Villa did pull a goal back late in stoppage time through Tommi O’Reilly but, by that time, the game had already been wrapped up as we made it 11 wins from 11 in the league this term, moving four points clear at the top. Spurs: Maguire, Ashcroft, LyonsFoster (c), Dorrington, Linton, Cassanova (Abbott 68), Ajayi (Williams 81), Hall (Robson 90+2), Lankshear, John, Soonsup-Bell (McKnight 81). 4 6 UNDER-18S THFC DOMINANT WIN PUTS US INTO FA YOUTH CUP LAST EIGHT Our Under-18s led in 90 seconds, scored four in the first half and never looked back on the way to demolishing AFC Bournemouth 6-2 in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday evening. Ellis Lehane’s high pressing led to early goals for Callum Olusesi and Mikey Moore at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium, with Oli Irow soon getting in on the act and Moore adding another in only the 33rd minute. Remy Rees-Dottin’s second-half strike for the Cherries only seemed to anger us into scoring a fifth through Damola Ajayi, with Irow later sliding home number six at the back post. Substitute Jonny Day headed in a consolation for Bournemouth. The only real disappointment on the night was an injury to Moore, who hobbled off in the latter stages, leaving us to finish the game with 10 men. The result puts us into the quarter-finals of the prestigious youth competition, where we’ll play away to either Manchester City or Reading, who meet next week. Spurs: Bloedorn, Black, Akhamrich (Logan 68), King (Willhoft-King 83), Chaplin (c), Hall, Ajayi, Olusesi, Lehane (Adewole 68), Moore, Irow. Substitutes (not used): Crisp, Sills, Ogunleye, Stevens. MOORE BAGS TREBLE IN SAINTS WIN Mikey Moore netted a sparkling hat-trick as our Under-18s twice came from a goal down to win 6-3 at Southampton last Friday (2 February). A sumptuous solo effort from the attacking midfielder, which followed an emphatic Oli Irow strike, had put us 2-1 up in the first half following Princewill Ehibhatiomhan’s early opener for the hosts but, after finding ourselves 3-2 down just before the hour mark through another Ehibhatiomhan effort and Pele Arganese-McDermott’s unfortunate own goal, a blitz of four goals in eight minutes – including two further well-taken efforts from Moore – blew our opponents away. Leo Black, made captain for the day, also contributed an excellent strike, with Callum Olusesi rounding off our side of the scoreline at Staplewood. Spurs: Bloedorn, Egan-Riley, King (Logan 73), Arganese-McDermott (Chaplin 65), Adelusi, Willhoft-King (Olusesi 60), Morgan, Black (c), Irow, Moore (Lehane 73), Akhamrich (Adewole 60). UNDER-17 RUN ENDS We were eliminated from the Under-17 Premier League Cup with a 4-1 quarterfinal defeat at Chelsea on 30 January. Damola Ajayi scored our goal as our efforts to defend the trophy we lifted last year were extinguished at Cobham. SPOILS SHARED AT BRIGHTON We conceded a late equaliser as Brighton & Hove Albion snatched a point from a 2-2 draw at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre on 27 January. Having cancelled out Shane Nti’s opener through Mikey Moore three minutes before half-time, we took the lead as Ellis Lehane instinctively fired in Moore’s corner on 50 minutes, but the home side agonisingly struck five minutes from time through substitute Harry Howell. Today, we meet Charlie Warren… NAME: Charlie Warren. POSITION: Goalkeeper. BORN: 24 November, 2006, in Braintree. LAST SCHOOL: Helena Romanes School. WHEN DID YOU FIRST JOIN SPURS? “I first started training here when I was eight – that was in April, 2015.” ANY OTHER SPORTS PLAYERS IN YOUR FAMILY? “My dad Adrian used to be a goalkeeper – he was in the Watford academy. My brother Henry is quite good at cricket – he had Essex County trials a few years ago.” WHO DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH IN TRAINING? “Vicario! Since he’s come in, he’s been so good, especially in training and with the tiny details that he takes care of, you can tell that’s why he’s playing so well. I love watching him train and play.” IF YOU COULD MEET SOMEONE FAMOUS DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? “Probably Mike Tyson, just to pick his brains and understand his mentality and the hard work and dedication behind what he’s achieved.” FIRST FOOTBALL SHIRT? “I’ve been a Spurs fan since I was born, so it would be a Gareth Bale shirt – probably the black and grey halves one. I also had a Hugo Lloris shirt growing up. My whole family are Spurs fans. I had a season ticket when I was five and I used to go all the time with my dad.” FAVOURITE FOOD? “My mum’s chicken and pesto pasta!” TOP THREE VIDEO GAMES? “EA FC, UFC and Fortnite.” IF YOU COULDN’T BE A FOOTBALLER, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE INSTEAD? “I studied business at school so I’d maybe start my own company or look to work in economics.” GETTING TO KNOW… CHARLIE WARREN
