THFC LUNAR NEW YEAR 5 1 What is the Lunar New Year? The Lunar New Year, as its name suggests, is based on the cycles of the Moon and falls on a different day each year – usually between late January and the middle of February. This year, the celebrations start today (10 February) and it’s the Year of the Wood Dragon. It spans the first 15 days of the first month of the lunar calendar and is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. China’s Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival or Chūnjié 春节 in Mandarin, while Koreans call it Seollal 설날 and the Vietnamese call it Tet. Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in many East Asian and South East Asian cultures, celebrated globally by the significant East and South East Asian overseas diaspora, most notably in London’s Chinatown, which sees huge celebrations each year with tens of thousands of visitors enjoying the traditional dance, music and food. Cultures celebrating Lunar New Year have different ways of greeting each other during the holiday. In Mandarin, a common way to wish family and close friends a happy New Year is “Xīnnián hǎo,” 新年好 meaning “New Year Goodness” or “Good New Year.” “Gong Hai Fat Choy” 恭喜發財 is also commonly heard in Cantonese (Wishing you Prosperity). For Seollal, South Koreans commonly say “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo” 새 복 많이 받으세요 (May you receive lots of luck in the new year). For Tet, the common greetings would be ‘Chuc mung nam moi!’ Why is it the Year of the Dragon? The Lunar or Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 animals, starting with the rat and running through the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The dragon is seen as the most auspicious sign – there is often a spike in births during dragon years. The dragon year is related to success, intelligence and honour in Chinese culture, while wood dragons are full of energy and dream of changing the world. Each zodiac animal also has a raft of lucky colours, numbers and directions. Each person’s prospects for the year and in life are also influenced by the “five elements” of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. What are Lunar New Year Foods and Traditions? Each culture celebrates the Lunar New Year differently with various foods and traditions that symbolise prosperity, abundance and togetherness. In preparation for the Lunar New Year, houses are thoroughly cleaned to rid them of inauspicious spirits, which might have collected during the old year. Cleaning is also meant to open space for good will and good luck. Homes are filled with decorations to ward away evil spirits and bring in luck and prosperity. Traditional meals feature foods like glutinous rice ball soup, moon-shaped rice cakes (New Year’s cake) and dumplings (Jiǎozi 饺子in Mandarin). Sometimes, a coin is tucked inside a dumpling for good luck. The holiday concludes with the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated on the last day of New Year’s festivities. Parades, dances, games and fireworks mark the finale of the holiday. Koreans prepare sliced rice cake soup (tteokguk 떡국 ) to mark the Lunar New Year holiday. The clear broth and white rice cakes of tteokguk are believed to symbolise starting the year with a clean mind and body. We would like to wish everyone celebrating, a very Happy Lunar New Year. SEAGULLS SHARE THE SPOILS Ossie Ardiles shows typical poise and balance during our entertaining 2-2 draw with Brighton early on in the 1980/81 season. The Division One match was our third of the season and we’d made a strong start with wins over Nottingham Forest (2-0) and Crystal Palace (4-3) while the Seagulls had beaten Wolves 2-0 but lost by the same scoreline at Ipswich Town. New signing Garth Crooks was already showing his goalscoring prowess with three goals in our opening two wins and he continued that form with the opener against Brighton on a sunny day at White Hart Lane, latching onto Ricky Villa’s low cross from the right to fire past Graham Moseley at his near post. The game was notable for having two Gordon Smiths in action against each other – our own Smith featuring at right-back while Brighton’s spearheaded their attack and scored both of their goals on the day. His first levelled the scores in the first half as he was picked out inside the area by Ray McHale and produced a deft lob over goalkeeper Mark Kendall. We were back in front with 25 minutes remaining when Glenn Hoddle’s shot squirmed out of the grasp of Moseley and dribbled across the goalline but again, back came Brighton with Smith showing great composure to slot home a second equaliser. We finished the season in 12th place in the table but with the FA Cup in our hands after that famous replay victory over Manchester City, while Brighton ended the campaign one place and two points above the relegation zone. THFC WATC H YO U R L A N G UAG E 5 9 In a new series in this season’s matchday programme, we speak to a Spurs player either past or present to find out about the languages they speak and how that translates onto the pitch. In focus today, Under-18s goalkeeper ELLIOT KRASNIQI… NAME: ELLIOT KRASNIQI AGE: 18 BORN: NEWHAM, ENGLAND LANGUAGES SPOKEN: ALBANIAN, ENGLISH How and why did you learn your languages? “English is my first language but my parents were both born in Albania so growing up, they spoke Albanian to me in the house. Because of that, I picked up both languages from a young age. “Obviously I play for the Albania youth national teams – the Under-19s at the moment – but even outside of that, I’ve been to Albania lots of times. We try to go every year but it’s sometimes difficult because of football and my parents’ work. We go as often as we can, though. It’s very beautiful out there!” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “Probably Spanish. It just sounds nice! I feel like it would be useful to learn that as a footballer as well, because it seems like a lot of European footballers understand it.” How does Albanian differ from English when you’re on the pitch in a game? “Everything we say is literal, so if you’re telling someone there’s an opponent coming, it just translates directly. We say ‘shpejt’ quite a lot in games – that basically means ‘quickly’, so you say that to keep people alert if you need a quick pass or if there’s someone closing you down. “In the national set-up, we normally speak Albanian on the pitch but there are lots of players who live in different countries, so sometimes they use their Watch your language FOOTBALL: FUTBOLLI GOALKEEPER: PORTIER CROSSBAR: TRAVERSA REFEREE: GJYQTAR DEFENDER: MBROJTËS SAVE: SHPËTOI PITCH: FUSHË YELLOW CARD: KARTON I VERDHË FOOTBALL PHRASES IN ALBANIAN own languages too. Some players that play here speak English, other players from Italy speak Italian, others from France speak French, but the majority of the squad speaks Albanian. “Everyone knows English, too. It’s a bit of a mixture. For example, if you have a partnership on the pitch like the centre-backs, if they’re both from Italy, they will speak Italian and then to me they’ll speak English. That’s how you get through it – just communicating in whichever language your team-mates understand.” WITH ELLIOT KRASNIQI

6 8 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WELCOME TO THE CLUB Play Now

THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 6 9 WHO WHO WAS YOUR FOOTBALL IDOL? I used to like Santiago Canizares, who used to play for Valencia. Random! My dad watches all football, so I used to watch La Liga with him, the era of Puyol and Xavi at Barcelona, but I used to love watching all the goalkeepers. I used to love Canizares, tried to imitate him, tucked my shirt in the same way, wore the same boots for a while, yeah, I used to love him. WHO DO YOU SIT NEXT TO MOST WHEN YOU TRAVEL TO AWAY GAMES? Our table tends to stay the same – me, Drew Spence and Rosella Ayane. Drew sleeps for most of the journey, that suits me so then I can nod off as well! Either that, or we’ll play games. WORDS BY PAUL MILES GETTING TO KNOW... becky spencer Continuing our feature where we find out more about our players on and off the pitch. This week, we’re getting to know Women’s First Team goalkeeper BECKY SPENCER, who has been with us since July 2019… WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH? I was going to go for an obvious one in Ros (Ayane), but Ash Neville really does make me laugh. She comes out with some things…I find her really funny. WHO IS THE BEST SINGER AT THE CLUB? I’m pretty sure Kit Graham can sing a little. She always says, ‘I’m not tone deaf, I can do a bit’, and I want to hear her sing! WHERE WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE? At home on my sofa. MAURICIO POCHETTINO GAVE OLIVER HIS CHANCE SANTIAGO CANIZARES WAS AN EARLY HERO

7 0 G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . THFC WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT? I’d like to go to Hawaii. I don’t know why. Somewhere different. WHERE DO YOU GO SHOPPING? Food shopping? I’ll go to Sainsbury nine times out of 10, but if I want to treat myself, I’ll go to Marks & Spencer. For clothes, Zara. WHERE WOULD YOU GO IF YOU COUD GO BACK IN TIME? I’d like to go back to where it all started for us, the evolution of the human race, prehistoric times, to find out why we’re all here… HOW HOW DO YOU SPEND ANY FREE TIME YOU GET? I go to my parents’ house a lot. I’ve got a big family, my sisters, my brother, nine nieces and nephews, so we’ll all go there on a Friday, that’s nice. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR EGGS IN THE MORNING? Scrambled, definitely. HOW DO YOU OVERCOME ANY PERSONAL SETBACKS? As I’ve got older, I’ve realised that whatever happens, it’s not the end of the world. There is always a chance to do something about it, do something else, always the chance to come back. I just take every day as it comes, and don’t take life too seriously. It’s the same with football – move on and put it behind you. HOW MANY PETS DO YOU HAVE? My mum and dad have two cats, Beanie and Cookie, but I’ve grown up with them, so I’ll say two cats. BECKY IN ACTION IN OUR GOALMOUTH “As I’ve got older, I’ve realised that whatever happens, it’s not the end of the world.”

THFC G E T T I N G TO K N O W. . . 7 1 WHAT WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SANDWICH? Ploughmans. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW? I’m watching The Handmaid’s Tale at the moment, also, Made in Chelsea. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ICE CREAM? It’s just straight vanilla, I’m not really an ice cream lover. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHEESE? Camembert – I love a cheese board, especially at Christmas. WHEN WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HOOKED UP WITH SCHOOL FRIENDS? That was last year, but they do make an effort to come to the games. I’ve a group of friends I go way back with. Sometimes, they’ll come and not even tell me! I went to school in Harrow. WHEN DID YOU LAST COOK, AND WHAT WAS IT? Tuna and sweetcorn pasta, with garlic bread, very simple, very boring, but I do enjoy that. WHEN DO YOU WAKE UP ON YOUR DAYS OFF? There is no alarm, it’s just when I wake up. I feel like I must need the sleep if I’m not waking up. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WENT TO THE CINEMA? Last time, I went to watch a screening of Raging Bull at Everyman. I quite often just pick a spontaneous film and go and watch it. BECKY IS KEEN ON THE HANDMAID’S TALE

THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E . . . 8 1 Continuing our new feature for this season, as we ask our supporters to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects… MY FAVOURITE GAME In terms of matches I’ve actually been to, my favourite was the League Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal at the Lane back in 2008. We’d been through some low moments against them down the road so to win so convincingly that night was special. The atmosphere was incredible and even though we beat Chelsea in the final, that Arsenal victory gave us the belief we could win the cup. MY FAVOURITE PLAYER I’ve been lucky to watch some wonderful players down the years and I have to give a notable mention to the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Gazza, Dimitar Berbatov, Gareth Bale, Harry Kane and even players like Tom Huddlestone and Michael Carrick, all gifted footballers. But Luka Modric tops the lot of them. I don’t think we realised how lucky we were to have him for those few years but we could all see he was destined for greater things. What a player! MY FAVOURITE GOAL Lucas Moura’s hat-trick goal against Ajax will always be special, but my favourite is the masked Harry Kane’s superb curler against Arsenal back in 2016. To score from that angle was NAME: JOE KITCHENER  AGE: 51 amazing in itself, but the noise inside the Lane when it went in, I’d never heard anything like it before. That goal put us 2-1 up and top of the table and we all dared to dream. Arsenal equalised though and we never did top the table that season. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT I have a soft spot for the black Puma third shirt from 2008/09 as it was so different at the time. My favourite though is the home shirt from the 2009/10 season, the one with the yellow panels down the side which we wore when clinching Champions L e a g u e fo o t b a l l by w i n n i n g a t Manchester City. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY I know it all went wrong 30 seconds into the game, but I’m going to say my best away day was the Champions League Final. Not the match itself of course, but the whole three-week build up was just so exciting. And then to actually travel to Madrid with tens of thousands of other Spurs fans, all of us experiencing something new, experiencing Spurs history. Amazing. Want to feature on this page? Just send us your detailed answers to the five questions above and we’ll do our best to include you!
