6 ANGE POSTECOGLOU THFC

THFC ANGE POSTECOGLOU 7 “It will be another tough challenge, however it is one we are relishing and we know we will have your support from the first minute until the last” want to start these notes by congratulating Robert Vilahamn and our Women’s team on their historic north London derby win last weekend here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I loved being here as a fan, alongside so many of you, and it was an outstanding performance. Martha Thomas’ goal was the culmination of a brilliant team move from front to back, and they also showed great resilience against a strong Arsenal side. It made it a good weekend all-round for the Club, as the previous evening we had travelled to Nottingham Forest, where we recorded a good win. The City Ground is always a tough place to go, Forest always challenge you, and I was delighted with the way we handled it. We showed character and resilience, played decent football, created some chances and scored two good goals through Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski. I was really pleased with both the performance and the result. Since our last home game we have also been boosted by Destiny Udogie signing a new long-term contract. It’s Destiny’s first year in the Premier League and he is adapting to a new I role, however he has made an immediate impact in the team and has the mentality of always working to improve himself. That mindset is crucial for what we want to achieve and I’m delighted that he sees Tottenham Hotspur as the place for his future and development. This afternoon we face Everton and I should like to welcome Sean Dyche, his staff, players and everyone associated with the club. Sean has done a brilliant job at Goodison Park during what has undoubtedly been a difficult period for a number of reasons. They are arguably the Premier League’s in-form team, are strong defensively and pose a real threat going forwards. It will be another tough challenge for us, however it is one we are relishing and we know we will have your support from the first minute until the last. Finally, on behalf of everyone at the Club, I should like to wish you, your families and loved ones a very happy Christmas. I hope you have an enjoyable day, however you plan to spend it, and we shall be hoping to give you an early present this afternoon in the shape of three points.

THFC MY FIRST SPURS CHRISTMAS 9 GUGLIELMO VICARIO GOALKEEPER JOINED SPURS: JUNE, 2023 NATIONAL TEAM: ITALY Describe Christmas Day for you… “It’s a day to spend with the family, with the parents, to have a nice lunch all together and also sometimes to spend time with your other relatives like your cousins, so it’s a lovely day for us. In Italy we celebrate on 25 December like you do here in the UK.” What is your earliest Christmas memory? “When I was about seven or eight, I remember the first lunch we had at our new house with my parents and all my relatives. We had a big table, I think there were 18, 19 or 20 people around it, so it was a big dinner for sure! I remember that quite well.” What is traditional at Christmas in Italy? “It depends on the region but in my city, for the food, we have ham or cheese for starters, then we have some Tortellini Soup, then we typically have some boiled meat like boiled chicken and boiled beef along with some vegetables. We finish with a lot of desserts like Panettone, Pandoro or another one made with almonds. After that, we rest and then it’s a tradition for some people to go to the cinema on Christmas Day to watch a movie all together.” What is your favourite Christmas dinner? “We’re not used to having one specific dinner – it’s more like a long lunch, which lasts from midday until about five or six in the evening. We have a bit of everything so it’s hard to pick a favourite, but I like all of the traditional things I’ve just mentioned.” What was your most memorable gift as a child? “I remember when I was maybe four or five years old, I received a Lego digger which I was very happy with!” My First Spurs Christmas The return of our annual programme feature where we speak to some of our new arrivals from the last 12 months to learn about their Christmas traditions… W O R D S B Y B I L LY S H A W

1 0 MY FIRST SPURS CHRISTMAS THFC BRENNAN JOHNSON FORWARD JOINED SPURS: SEPTEMBER, 2023 NATIONAL TEAM: WALES Describe Christmas Day for you… “Obviously I’m from Nottingham so when I was younger, I’d be at home there. I’d wake up early, open some presents, go for a walk, come back, have some food and then just chill and eat lots of chocolate! It would always be a quiet one with the family, which was very nice.” What is your earliest Christmas memory? “I remember getting some football boots that I really wanted this one particular year. As soon as I woke up, I remember seeing them and I went straight for them because I knew what the box was like, so I knew it was going to be those boots. That was a great feeling and a great memory.” What is traditional at Christmas in Wales? “It’s pretty standard, similar to our usual Christmas in Nottingham. Primarily it’s just about seeing family. My grandma and grandad are both Welsh so they bring a lot of nice Welsh cakes at this time of year – we’ve had a lot of them in our house over the years. They’re really nice!” What is your favourite Christmas dinner? “Turkey, pigs in blankets, the usual stuff, although sometimes I like a bit of Jamaican food as well that my dad makes, so I like a little bit of a mix really. It’s just things like rice and peas, a bit of mutton, jerk chicken… only a little bit though, just mixed in.” What was your most memorable gift as a child? “Obviously the boots that I mentioned would have to be up there, but also I always loved getting a football kit – anything with my name on the back! To be fair, growing up, I didn’t mind what team it was, even if it wasn’t one that I supported, I still liked to have a football shirt. I think I got a Brazil kit one year!” “I ALWAYS LOVED GETTING A FOOTBALL KIT – ANYTHING WITH MY NAME ON THE BACK!”

THFC MY FIRST SPURS CHRISTMAS 1 1 MICKY VAN DE VEN DEFENDER JOINED SPURS: AUGUST, 2023 NATIONAL TEAM: NETHERLANDS Describe Christmas Day for you… “For me, it’s a really nice day, just spending time with the family, eating nice food with them and giving each other some presents. I’ve never experienced being at a club that plays football over the Christmas period before, but for me it’s okay because in previous years where you have the break, the break is nice but after that you have a small pre-season and normally I hate pre-season, so for me it’s better to play through this period!” What is your earliest Christmas memory? “That’s a tricky one. When I was a kid, we had the usual stuff with the family on Christmas morning and then I would go outside and play some football with the guys. So maybe it would be that, playing football in the street or in the garden when I was small.” What is traditional at Christmas in the Netherlands? “We have something called Gourmetten, which is like a small barbeque. There are little hotplates, you just put your own meat on them and you can eat whatever you want. It’s very nice. Other than the food, as I said, it’s just mainly about giving each other presents and spending time with the family.” What is your favourite Christmas dinner? “For me, it’s something from the Gourmetten – a nice bit of steak. But you can put anything you want on there so sometimes you can mix it up and choose lots of different things.” What was your most memorable gift as a child? “It was a PlayStation 3 that I got from my dad. It had just come out at the time and I was so excited to receive that! I always had the FIFA games on it.” “I’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEING AT A CLUB THAT PLAYS FOOTBALL OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD BEFORE.”

THFC NEWS 1 3 Members of our Yorkshire Spurs Official Supporters’ Club were joined by a special guest to take on Wakefield Everton Supporters’ Club last month. Julian Knowles, son of the late, great Cyril Knowles, pulled on his boots for the first time in 20 years to help Yorkshire Spurs to a resounding 10-1 victory against their counterparts from this afternoon’s opponents. Julian was put in touch with Yorkshire news DESK Spurs a few days prior to the game and is now an honorary member. The match was played at Kinsley Boys Football Club, close to where former left-back Cyril was born. The event raised approximately £800 for Menfulness, a York-based mental health charity, thanks to bucket collections, donations from participating players and Club partner getir providing a signed Spurs training shirt. Destiny Udogie has revealed how he’s felt at home since walking through the doors at Hotspur Way – and that has certainly translated to his outstanding performances on the pitch. Initially signing for us in August, 2022, before returning to Udinese on loan last season, the Italy international has been a revelation in his first Premier League campaign, his defensive strength combined with his raids forward as an inverted full-back have really caught the eye in Ange Postecoglou’s system. Speaking to us after putting pen to paper on a new deal which extends his stay here until 2030, Destiny said: “I’m really happy... happy because to be here at this club is a big joy for me, and happy for this opportunity. From the first day I came here, I felt at home, with the players, the coaching staff, the whole club, I feel so welcome. It’s the way everyone at the club respects you, the players, everyone.” Still only 21, Destiny is now 14 games into his Premier League career. He has a goal and two assists, has created 10 chances and is the only defender to have won possession in the final third at least 12 times. Asked how he’d found the Premier League so far, Destiny said: “It is very tough, it’s a physical league, intense... the staff are doing big work every day, and it’s showing on the pitch. It’s the most difficult league, you have to be ready mentally, physically, and I’m finding a good experience. Every day I’m learning something new, every day working with great players.” Two of our February fixtures have changed following the latest round of the Premier League broadcast selections. Firstly, our return clash with today’s opponents Everton at Goodison Park remains on Saturday 3 February but will now kick-off at Nice one Cyril’s son! Fixture changes 12.30pm and be shown live on TNT Sports. And our London derby with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has been moved to Friday 23 February, kicking off at 8pm on Sky Sports. However, this game is subject to the participation of the Blues in the Carabao Cup Final that weekend. NEW DEAL FOR DESTINY JULIAN KNOWLES (FAR LEFT) WITH THE YORKSHIRE SPURS TEAM

THFC F R O M T H E VAU LT 1 7 MERRY CHRISTMAS! For our final match before Christmas, we are looking at two of the few festive items in the collection – a pair of Christmas cards. The first is one from the Club and the second is one which the Club received. They are both from the 1950/51 season. Whilst Christmas cards are now a tradition across the world, the sending of them began in Victorian Britain, with Queen Victoria sending the first ‘official’ Christmas card. The first more commercial Christmas card was sent by Henry Cole, the founding director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and was designed by his friend, artist John Callcott Halsey, in 1843. Christmas greetings date further back still, a manuscript sent to King James the 1st from 1611, is held in the National Archives in Edinburgh; although this is far from what we would consider a Christmas card today. The Christmas cards pictured here are ‘official’, or business, Christmas cards. The first (below) is the one sent out by Spurs. The front is very simple, with the gold cockerel in the corner and the words ‘Christmas Greetings’ in gold and red lettering. The inside then reads, ‘Christmas Greetings, 1950 from the board room, office, players and ground staff, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’. Opposite the message is a photograph of all the staff at the club, with a bit of editing to add in the board of directors. Next up (right), and for comparison, is a Christmas card from Norwich City from the same season. The card has the club’s canary badge on the front with the same greeting message as our one. Inside however, it does not feature a staff photo, only a similar longer greeting message, with the added New Year. A Christmas in 1950 would have looked very different to our festive period today. In the year that these cards were sent, some things were still being rationed post-war. This included confectionary, sugar and meat; the meat ration did not end until 1954. This meant that there were very few turkeys for British Christmas dinners and some people even went as far as to create ‘mock turkey’, made of sausage meat, vegetables and breadcrumbs. The modern football festive calendar is always very busy, but the fixture list around Christmas in 1950 was also very hectic. We had a north London derby on this day (23 December) and then we faced Derby County in back-to-back fixtures, home and away, on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, followed by a match against Charlton Athletic on 30 December. In total we had seven matches to play through December that year. A Christmas Day fixture was a common occurrence up until the final one was played in 1965, although it was already being phased out by the late 1950s. In the early years of Christmas Day football, it was well attended and well liked because it was one of the few public holidays. WORDS BY SIAN ALLPRESS Our popular feature is back for another season as we dig into the club archives to examine the items and objects which have helped shape our history…

1 8 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 1 9 ROYAL’S VARIETY merson Royal could return to our starting line-up this afternoon as his versatility in defence has made him an integral part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad. It’s been something of an unusual season for the Brazilian international so far as his ability to adapt to the situation in front of us has seen him deployed in a number of different positions in our backline, yet he has only started four Premier League games so far this term. The fact that he’s been used in three different defensive positions in that quartet of matches just goes to illustrate the point! In his first-ever team selection for a competitive fixture for us following his summer appointment, our new Head Coach opted for Emerson as his right-back for our opening day visit to Brentford and the former Barcelona man chipped in with a first-half goal as we drew 2-2 with the Bees at the GTech Community Stadium. However, matchday two here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw Emerson drop to the bench as Pedro Porro was preferred in the right-back berth against Manchester United and the Spaniard grasped his opportunity, impressing in defence and attack to such an extent that he has held onto the role for every league game since. While the team went on an excellent nine-game unbeaten run, Emerson had to make do with appearances off the bench but was always ready for action when called upon, particularly against Fulham and Crystal Palace in October, when he played a significant amount of time in each to help us to two more important victories. But things changed for the team – and for Emerson – when Chelsea turned up in N17 in early November. First-half injuries and a red card for Cristian W O R D S B Y J O N R AY N E R Exclusive interview with Brazilian international EMERSON ROYAL, who has been deployed in a variety of defensive roles so far this season, and is always ready to help the team… E “I used to play striker, left winger, midfield, every position! I even started as a goalkeeper”

2 0 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 1 Romero led to the Head Coach having to shuffle has pack on the night, with Emerson replacing the injured James Maddison on the stroke of half-time. This time, the Brazilian was used in the left-back position after Destiny Udogie’s dismissal early in the second half, in what was a dramatic and bizarre contest as we almost held out for a draw until Chelsea struck late on to win 4-1. Emerson was back in the starting line-up for the second time this season for our next game at Wolves, holding onto the left-back berth in our 2-1 defeat, while he kept his place in the side for the following two matches as well – against Aston Villa and Manchester City – but this time in the centre of defence alongside Ben Davies. And although we suffered another 2-1 reverse here against Villa, we went to the Etihad and battled away against the odds to hold the champions to a 3-3 draw, a result which lifted spirits after a disappointing run of form, as Emerson explained. “Early in the season, we were in a good moment, playing very well in every game,” said our number 12. “We had adapted a style and played the same way in every game with the ball, pressed well without the ball and we were getting good results. “Our performances saw us at the top of the table and we wanted to keep improving with every game to try to stay there. But this is the Premier League and you always know every game is difficult, so when we played Chelsea, everything went wrong for us. Injuries, red cards, but even in that game, we tried to carry on playing our own football and finished the game well, they only won in the final few minutes. “We have such a great team spirit among the players, it has always been good but now it feels like it is on another level”

2 2 THE BIG INTERVIEW THFC “After this, we had to make changes to the team but nothing changed with the way we wanted to play. We have our style and we continued to play that way, even though we were unlucky to lose some matches. We are a top team and cannot lose consecutive matches like this, we needed to believe in ourselves and that’s what happened against Manchester City. “We went there and played a big game with real spirit to take a point, which gave us our confidence back. Yes ok, we lost to West Ham after that but since then we have beaten Newcastle and Nottingham Forest and we feel we are back in a good place again now.” Emerson has more than played his part, even if results weren’t going our way during that recent difficult spell. But his versatility to play in different positions was invaluable at a time when our options in defence were limited. As far as the 24-year-old is concerned, he’s enjoyed being back in the side regardless of which position he’s being used in as it shows he has the faith of his manager. “It’s good for me to be playing in the team because it means the manager believes in me, so he doesn’t worry whether he puts me at right-back, centre-back or left-back,” Emerson continued. “To have that trust from your manager is important for any player. “When I was away with the national team, I spoke with the gaffer there and he said to me that it was important for me to play in other positions because I need to be versatile, I need to be available to the manager if other players get injured or suspended. They need to know they can rely on me and that is what has happened here. “It’s nothing new for me to play other positions though. Throughout my life it was always like this, I used to play striker, left winger, midfield, every position! I even started playing football as a goalkeeper when I was small!” Born in Sao Paulo, Emerson played for Ponte Preta and Atletico Mineiro in his homeland before spells in Spain with Real Betis and Barcelona, joining us from the latter in August 2021. Now in his third season in north London, the defender has already racked up 90 appearances in lilywhite and reveals he’s loving life in England, while insisting the spirit in the squad is currently the best it’s been during his time here.

THFC THE BIG INTERVIEW 2 3 “I’m very proud to have played that many games for this club already, I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “I’m very happy here, I want to play all the time of course but I’m happy to help the team whenever I can. We have such a great team spirit among the players, it has always been good but now it feels like it is on another level because we are all pushing each other, pushing hard to stay near the top positions in the table and to win trophies, that is what we all want.” Having recorded back-to-back wins over Newcastle and Forest recently, today we welcome Everton to N17 as we look to make it three on the spin. Sean Dyche’s side are one of the form teams in the Premier League right now with four straight wins of their own and with a squad and fanbase galvanised by a recent 10-point deduction for breaching the league’s profit and sustainability rules. With Destiny Udogie suspended after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season in last week’s win at the City Ground, Emerson could well find himself back in the side today and knows it will be a tough encounter against the in-form Toffees. “Like I said before, every game in the Premier League is difficult and this will be no different,” he explained. “We know they like to get the ball forward quickly so we will need to try to stop the crosses, stop the set pieces because this is one area they are good at. But most importantly, we need to play our own football and try to control the game.” When talking about form, it would be remiss not to mention our striker Richarlison, who will be keen to impress against his former club. Recently returned after undergoing groin surgery, the Brazilian forward has netted three goals in our previous two games and his compatriot and good friend Emerson is delighted to see him back on the scoresheet and playing with a smile on his face again. “Richy is a top player at the top level. I’ve known him from before with the national team and remember him at Everton, he has always scored goals and always fights for the win in every game,” said Emerson. “I’m very happy for him because he was finding it difficult with his injury, playing in pain, but now his confidence is back, he’s scoring goals and I hope he continues to do this for us.” “Most importantly, we need to play our own football and try to control the game”

THFC OPPOSITION 2 9 NICKNAME: THE TOFFEES FOUNDED: 1878 STADIUM: GOODISON PARK ALL-TIME MOST APPEARANCES: NEVILLE SOUTHALL (750) ALL-TIME MOST GOALS: DIXIE DEAN (383) The 52-year-old has been in the Goodison hotseat since January this year, helping to steer the club to Premier League safety on the final day of the 2022/23 season following a difficult campaign. Dyche managed Watford between 2002 and 2005, but it was with Burnley where he really forged his reputation – during a near 10-year spell from 2012 to 2020 he won promotion twice as well as achieving a seventh-placed top-flight finish in 2017/18. The most seismic event in Everton’s recent history was November’s announcement that they would be deducted 10 points for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. While the club have appealed, the punishment appears to have galvanised players, fans and staff, with four successive victories (over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Chelsea and Burnley) without conceding a goal taking them out of the relegation zone ahead of today’s game. THFC OPPOSITION 3 1 03.04.23 GOODISON PARK PREMIER LEAGUE EVERTON 1-1 SPURS (Keane 90) (Kane pen 68) We were denied in the closing stages at Goodison Park as a long-range Michael Keane effort forced us to share the spoils on Merseyside. We’d led thanks to Harry Kane’s penalty on 68 minutes, by which time the Toffees had been reduced to 10 men when Abdoulaye Doucoure was sent off. However, Lucas Moura was also shown the red card in the closing stages before centre-back Keane stepped up to level the scores and take Everton clear of the relegation zone. 3 4 M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N THFC MATCHDAY NICK BARMBY Came through our youth set up to score 27 goals in 108 appearances for the first team between 1992-95 before moving to Middlesbrough and then Everton, in 1996. Spent four years at Goodison, becoming one of the few players to leave the Blues for Liverpool and later played for Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Hull City. SIMON DAVIES Welsh midfielder who joined us from Peterborough United in December 1999 and enjoyed five years with us, peaking with seven goals in 41 games during the 2001/02 season. Left us for Everton in the summer of 2005, scoring once in 53 appearances for the Toffees. Also played for Fulham and won 58 caps for Wales. LOUIS SAHA After spells with Metz, Newcastle United, Fulham, Manchester United and Everton, the French striker joined us in January 2012. Scored twice on his home debut against Newcastle and four times in 12 games for us, having previously scored 35 times in 115 appearances for the Toffees. PAT VAN DEN HAUWE Joined us in August, 1989 and helped Spurs win the 1991 FA Cup. A no-nonsense full-back, he had enjoyed success with Everton as they won the League title twice, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as reaching the FA Cup final on three occasions. After four seasons and over 100 League appearances with us, he joined Millwall. STOKE CITY 1-3 SPURS 23.12.20 BRITANNIA STADIUM A rare Ben Davies goal helped us to a Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Stoke three years ago today. The Welsh defender restored our lead after Jordan Thompson had cancelled out Gareth Bale’s opener, with Harry Kane securing our place in the last four with nine minutes left. EVERTON 2-6 SPURS 23.12.18 GOODISON PARK A stunning win over today’s opponents WINS ON THIS DAY PLAYED FOR BOTH in 2018, as we hit them for six at Goodison despite going behind. Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane both hit doubles with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also on target in a scintillating performance. Theo Walcott and Gylfi Sigurdsson netted for the Toffees. BURNLEY 0-3 SPURS 23.12.17 TURF MOOR Harry Kane unwrapped a Christmas hat-trick in this comfortable win at Turf Moor. A penalty followed by two second-half strikes gave him his seventh treble of 2017 as he equalled Alan Shearer’s record for Premier League goals scored in a calendar year with 36. MANCHESTER CITY 2-3 SPURS 23.12.02 MAINE ROAD An eventful clash 21 years ago on this day as we edged a five-goal thriller. Chris Perry cancelled out Steve Howey’s opener for City before Simon Davies and Gus Poyet made it 3-1. Christian Ziege then saw red late on, Ali Bernabia pulled a goal back, but we held out for the win. SPURS 2-0 SHEFFIELD UNITED 23.12.72 WHITE HART LANE Incredibly, it’s 51 years since our last home win on this day! That came in a low-key affair against Sheffield United, just two days after the first leg of our League Cup semi-final with Wolves. Martin Chivers and Steve Perryman scored in this victory over the Blades. HARRY KANE SCORES THE SIXTH IN 2022

THFC M AT C H D AY C O U N T D O W N 3 5 COUNTDOWN ROBBIE KEANE 12.01.03 SPURS 4-3 EVERTON A seven-goal thriller against the Toffees 20 years ago was decided by a Robbie Keane treble. Early goals apiece from Brian McBride and Gus Poyet left the game poised at 1-1 at the break. Keane’s first two were cancelled out by Steve Watson and Tomasz Radzinski, but the Irish striker had the final say with an 83rd-minute winner. CHRIS ARMSTRONG 28.12.98 SPURS 4-1 EVERTON An 18-minute hat-trick from striker Chris Armstrong gave us a comfortable December win over Everton in this encounter. Les Ferdinand gave us the lead, but Ibrahim Bakayoko levelled shortly after and it was left to Armstrong to secure the win. He restored our lead just after the hour mark and had hit a treble by the 81st minute. BOBBY SMITH 11.10.58 SPURS 10-4 EVERTON A famous win in our history, well-known as the first game of Bill Nicholson’s successful reign as manager. Incredibly, we hit double figures and Bobby Smith led the way as he netted a hat-trick and then even added a fourth of his own! Also on target were John Ryden, Terry Medwin, Tommy Harmer, George Robb and Alfie Stokes (2). 07.03.22 SPURS 5-0 EVERTON PREMIER LEAGUE Our biggest home win of the 2021/22 campaign came against the Toffees. Monday Night Football saw Harry Kane net twice – incredibly his sixth Premier League brace against Everton – with Heung-Min Son and Sergio Reguilon also on target while visiting defender Michael Keane got the ball rolling for us when he put through his own net. Reguilon had only been on the pitch for 44 seconds as a half-time substitute when he scored! 01.01.05 SPURS 5-2 EVERTON PREMIER LEAGUE We started 2005 in perfect fashion with this thumping win on New Year’s Day. It was a game memorable for three different players all netting their first Spurs goals, not least young Academy product Dean Marney who scored a brace. Reto Ziegler and Pedro Mendes also opened their accounts with Robbie Keane adding our fifth, with Tim Cahill and James McFadden replying for Everton. 25.12.56 SPURS 6-0 EVERTON WHITE HART LANE Everton were our visitors to White Hart Lane on Christmas Day back in 1956 – and we gave our fans plenty of festive cheer. As our subsequent matchday programme of the time said: ‘On Christmas morning, Everton came to Tottenham but found little in their stockings!’ On a freezing cold day and on a hard but slippery surface which made ball control particularly difficult, we managed to get to grips with the conditions better than the visitors and romped to a 6-0 victory. Bobby Smith opened the scoring after 10 minutes and we doubled our lead through Alfie Stokes to take control at the interval. While the trainers for both teams were kept busy owing to heavy falls by several players, the game was played in a typically sporting manner and we drove home our dominance in the second period. Terry Medwin added a brace, Tommy Harmer converted a penalty and Smith netted our sixth in front of 27,761 fans who went home for Christmas dinner with smiles on their faces. No respite for our players though who, after a hurried post-match lunch, travelled up to Everton for the return match on Boxing Day! That game ended 1-1. 3 6 OPPOSITION VIEW THFC oing back to the start of your long Goodison Park career firstly – how did your move from Norwich City to Everton come about back in 1986? I got a phone call from Howard Kendall asking if I would be interested in going up to Everton, which I was. Norwich were trying to hold out for a million pounds so it went to transfer deadline day and I had to meet Howard at Villa Park, which was half way between the two clubs, and the deal got done there. It was £900,000 in the end, so Everton got a bargain (laughs)! Having been born in Liverpool, how special was it coming back to your home city to play for Everton? It was great. Don’t forget I’d already been at Liverpool Football Club, playing reserve team football though. So when I first went to Everton, the fans weren’t sure about me. On my debut I got booed after. I wasn’t playing well to be fair, because I was still getting used to how Everton played. They played with a high backline and it took a bit of time to get used to that. But after four or five games, I got into the swing of it and things turned then. You know what it’s like, if someone’s not doing well in the team they get a bit of stick, but when you come good, the fans are right behind you. There were so many highlights for you at Everton, not least winning the old First Division title in 1986/87 and the FA Cup in 1995? Yes, they were both incredible moments in my career. The FA Cup was amazing. It’s something you dream about as a kid, running around Wembley with the cup. We played Tottenham in the semi-finals that year as you’ll remember and everything just seemed to click in that game. The only disappointing thing for me was that Tottenham scored a penalty, and I felt it should never have been a penalty, but never mind, we got a great victory and then went on to play Manchester United in the final. Who were the Tottenham players you most admired during your career? There are so many names I could give you, starting from my early years at Norwich when Graham Roberts and Paul Miller were defenders and Mark Falco and Clive Allen were up front, while Glenn Hoddle was about then too of course. Tottenham always have great players, great individuals. I see some parallels between Spurs and Everton in terms of the size of the clubs and both sets of fans having to wait for periods of their history for trophy successes to come along. What was it like becoming caretaker manager of Everton in 1997? It was a great experience looking back on it. When I got asked would I want to do the job, I just said ‘yes of course’, and I honestly didn’t know what remaining fixtures we had left. So when I looked at the seven games remain I thought ‘oh my God’. We had Leicester, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham at home and Aston Villa and Sunderland away. We needed to get five points. Fortunately, we got three draws and then beat Tottenham (1-0) at Goodison with the late Gary Speed scoring the winner, which was the catalyst for our survival. After retiring in 2001, you went on to manager Tranmere Rovers. What was that experience like? At Tranmere, the expectations were to get into the (old First Division) play-offs. We just missed out on them so that was a big disappointment. It’s tough at that level, it’s not as if you can just go and bring players in, you haven’t got so much OPPOSITION VIEW G Each matchday, ANDY GREEVES speaks to a player that formerly turned out for our visitors. Today, DAVE WATSON looks back on his time at Everton, for whom he made 529 appearances in all competitions between 1986 and 2000.

THFC OPPOSITION VIEW 3 7 money to spend and it’s a battle. But it was a good experience and I will always be grateful to them for giving me the chance to be their manager. I enjoyed it in a strange sort of way. Can you tell us a bit more about your work in football after that? I was doing scouting for Wigan when Brucey (Steve Bruce) arrived there and he said there was an under-18 (coaching) job going if I fancied it. So, I took that and was working with the youngsters for a few years. It was great environment to work in and then Roberto Martinez came in and took things on even more. I eventually ended up going to Newcastle, where Willie Donachie was at the time. I had previously been at Everton with Wille. He was coaching the Newcastle reserves when the under-18 job came up and he gave me a ring and suggested I apply. I got the job and I went on to spend 10 wonderful years working at the football club. I still live in Newcastle and the passion of the fans up here is amazing. I eventually made the decision to stop working. We’ve got four kids, and four grandkids now. A couple of my lads live in London, one in Manchester and my daughter’s still here in Newcastle so we were travelling around trying to keep in touch with everyone. That’s a job in itself! How much are you looking forward to this Spurs-Everton match today? Everton are on a crest of a wave at the moment. They are doing well and the fans are being absolutely amazing right now. They have always been great, but now they are right up for a fight a n d s o w i l l c r e a t e a fa n t a s t i c atmosphere. Tottenham are coming off the back of a great win over Newcastle and then beating Forest, so I think it will be a tough game for Everton. I think if Everton can come away with a point, it will be a great result for them. “Tottenham always have great players, great individuals. THFC HOSPITAL VISITS 3 9 We were delighted to continue our Christmas tradition of players visiting local hospitals recently, spreading festive cheer and delivering presents on behalf of the Club. This time around, 14 players paid visits to children’s wards at five local hospitals. Brandon Austin, Alfie Dorrington and Ryan Sessegnon made the short trip to North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton, while Gio Lo Celso, Hugo Lloris and Cuti Romero visited Whittington Hospital in Upper Holloway. Bryan Gil, Pedro Porro and Alejo Veliz went to Whipps Cross in Leytonstone, Micky van de Ven and Ashley Phillips visited Princess Alexandra in Harlow while Richarlison, Emerson Royal and Oliver Skipp handed out gifts at Barnet Hospital. Players also delivered special gifts from Official Club partners Cadbury and Molton Brown to all hospital staff. It was a new experience for Micky van de Ven, previously with Volendam in Holland and VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, and he told us: “This is the first time I’ve done something like this and it’s really nice to see the smiles on the faces of the kids, it’s special. It’s a gift to be healthy, you have to enjoy life every day and when you see these kids in hospital at this time of year, you really appreciate that. The families are going through a tough time, if you see them smiling...it’s good to do this.” Ashley Phillips, who was with Micky in Harlow, added: “Christmas is a time of love, so being in hospital at this time of year must be tough. To be able to put smiles on kids’ faces is really good. There were plenty of Spurs fans here as well, it was great to meet them all!” Spreading festive cheer at local hospitals!

4 2 SPURS WOMEN THFC DERBY DELIGHT IN N17! Martha Thomas fired us to our firstever victory over Arsenal Women on an historic day at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Having withstood the Gunners’ pressure and had a couple of halfchances ourselves, we took the lead 13 minutes into the second half when Thomas finished a slick move that left the visitors completely outfoxed. We defended superbly for the remainder of the game, goalkeeper Barbora Votikova in excellent form on her first Women’s Super League start, as we put in an outstanding all-round display against one of the WSL’s long-established top sides to end our five-game winless league run in the best way possible. We were on the backfoot for much of the first period, with Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy going close with headers before Caitlin Foord struck the far post and Frida Maanum coaxed a fine save out of Votikova, who subsequently denied Victoria Pelova in the run-up to half-time. It was more of the same after the restart as Maanum’s shot was superbly saved and Russo headed wide, while a great block from centre-back Molly Bartrip denied Beth Mead. Crucially, though, we remained solid and in the 58th minute, stunned the visitors with a well-worked opening goal, Thomas fizzing the ball out to Celin Bizet on the right, who showed great vision to find Thomas arriving at the edge of the box with the latter sliding low into the net. As Arsenal tried to respond, Amy Turner, Ashleigh Neville and Angharad James all made superb blocks and defensive interventions over the remainder of the contest. Votikova claimed an angled effort from substitute Kyra Cooney-Cross while Foord couldn’t quite connect with a header in the centre of the box and Amanda Ilestedt nodded over the bar from a corner. However, after weathering all of Arsenal’s pressure over more than 11 minutes of added time, we had a golden chance to score ourselves in the last few seconds when Jessica Naz set fellow substitute Ayane free on the counterattack following a corner which goalkeeper Zinsberger had gone up to contest, but the forward’s effort towards the empty net was somehow blocked. It mattered not, though, as the final whistle sounded straight away, much to the delight of the home crowd! Spurs: Votikova, James, Buhler (Turner 19), Bartrip, Neville, Petzelberger, Thomas (Percival 85), Graham, Bizet (Ayane 90+5), England (c) (Naz 46), Clinton. Substitutes (not used): Spencer, Zadorsky, Brazil, Ale, Pearse. Arsenal: Zinsberger, McCabe (c) (Lacasse 89), Ilestedt, Wubben-Moy, Catley, Pelova (Cooney-Cross 65), Walti (Blackstenius 80), Mead, Maanum (Miedema 66), Foord, Russo. Substitutes (not used): D’Angelo, Beattie, Maritz, Kuhl, Codina. HISTORIC WIN THRILLS ROBERT Robert Vilahamn heaped praise on his squad after our historic win over Arsenal – and also highlighted the influence of our fans after such a memorable result. We produced a superb, resolute performance all over the pitch to seal our first-ever victory over Arsenal’s women’s side, Martha Thomas converting the only goal of the game shortly before the hour mark. Almost 20,000 fans turned out to support the players – our biggest WSL crowd of the season at home or away – and Robert was delighted with their input, along with that of his players. “I’m so happy for the girls, how we went in and showed that we wanted to win this game and do it for the Club,” he smiled. “We dared to play and we defended so well today. The goal we scored is probably the most beautiful goal I’ve seen – it was so nice, all the way from the build-up to Martha scoring, so I’m really happy. SPURS WOMEN SPURS WOMEN JOY AND DESPAIR CAPTURED IN ONE MOMENT AS MARTHA THOMAS FIRES IN THE WINNER AGAINST ARSENAL

THFC SPURS WOMEN 4 3 “If you look at the character this group has and the players – how brave they are to do it – it’s amazing, but also the fans helped us today because of the noise they made and the feeling we get when we get onto this pitch is that we can beat any team here, so it’s a mixture of the players really taking steps and the fans coming and supporting us.” MAGIC MOMENT FOR MATCHWINNER MARTHA Martha Thomas spoke of her pride after firing us to our first-ever win over Arsenal Women last weekend. Signed in the summer from Manchester United, the Scottish international was delighted to have finished off a fine move to score in front of an enthusiastic crowd. “It felt great to have the crowd here and it felt like such a home advantage,” she explained. “Arsenal created good chances at the end but the crowd was behind us, we stuck together and we got the result. I think I ran from one six-yard box to the other but do you know what? It was the most impressive goal because it’s come from us playing riskily out from the back and that entices Arsenal to press us. We’re confident on the ball, we’re building up, we’re finding gaps, finding pockets and it was a fantastic build-up from one end to the other. Celin put it on a plate, I just had to get a toe on it and that’s what happened!” DERBY THRILLER ENDS ALL SQUARE We picked up a point from a rip-roaring Continental Tyres League Cup tie at Arsenal on Wednesday – only to lose out in the subsequent penalty shootout. Flying high in Group D with two wins out of two prior to kick-off, we took the lead three times over the course of a high-octane encounter at the Mangata Pay UK Stadium, Martha Thomas ending her wait for a first goal since October in emphatic style early on before a well-taken brace from Jess Naz had the home side on the ropes. But after Stina Blackstenius and Frida Maanum hauled the Gunners back level on two separate occasions, an unfortunate own goal from Amy Turner midway through the second half proved costly as the match ended 3-3 and went to penalties, with Arsenal winning the shootout 4-3 for an extra point to go top of the group. It was a fine performance from Robert Vilahamn’s side, though, and we remain in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals with one more game remaining. Arsenal: D’Angelo, Maritz, Beattie, Codina, McCabe (c) (Catley 61), Kuhl (Russo 83), Cooney-Cross, Lacasse (Mead 72), Maanum (Pelova 72), Miedema (Foord 61), Blackstenius. 4 4 UNDER-21S THFC EARLY GOALS PROVE ENOUGH AT SUNDERLAND An early quick-fire double saw our Under-21s edge Sunderland 2-1 in our Premier League Cup group stage clash on 11 December. Hitting the front in the opening stages at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, Jude Soonsup-Bell got us on our way with five minutes on the clock, lashing home from the angle after working his way into the box. Within a minute, Rio Kyerematen had us two to the good as he picked out the corner of the net from the edge of the area for his second goal in as many games. Despite our bright start, we were made to weather the storm as the game progressed with the hosts enjoying the lion’s share of the ball, although they struggled to find a way past the impressive Luca Gunter. That was until the final minute of stoppage time as the Black Cats finally broke our resolve with Harry Gardiner tapping home Ben Crompton’s cross to provide them a late consolation. Sunderland: Bishop, Crompton, Bainbridge, Burke, Fieldson, Triantis (Wilson 63), Spellman (c) (Ryder 81), Middlemas (Chiabi 77), Hemir, Jones, Burstow (Gardiner 63). Substitute (not used): Chibueze. Spurs: Gunter, Lyons-Foster, Robson (Linton 83), Dorrington, Ashcroft, Craig (c), Soonsup-Bell (McKnight 73), Kyerematen (Cassanova 73), Lankshear (Williams 88), Donley, Santiago. Substitute (not used): Keeley. RECOGNITION FOR LANKSHEAR Will Lankshear was recently shortlisted for November’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month award. Earning his first-ever international call-up last month, Will travelled with England Under-19s for a trio of games in Marbella and duly found the net in every one of them. Will’s nomination means we’ve had at least one player shortlisted for the Premier League 2 prize every month since the start of the season, with Jamie Donley claiming the award in October. In the end, Crystal Palace’s Ademola Ola-Adebomi took the November honour. UNITED GAME TO BE REARRANGED Our Premier League 2 fixture against Manchester United at Hotspur Way on 2 December was postponed due to a partly frozen pitch. The decision was made following a pitch inspection by the match referee. A new date for the game will be announced in due course. RIO’S STRIKE WAS FANS’ FAVOURITE Rio Kyerematen’s rocket from range against Peterborough United Under-21s won the Club’s Goal of the Month award for November. As voted for by our supporters, Rio’s stunning strike in our 2-0 away win in the Premier League Cup emerged top of our online poll. After Will Lankshear had bagged the opener on 24 minutes at Stamford AFC’s new Zeeco Stadium, the 18-yearold capped a standout midfield display by unleashing a 30-yard drive into the top corner in the 33rd minute to round off the 2-0 scoreline as we continued our 100 per cent record against Under-21 opposition this season. His strike against the Posh fended off tough competition from Giovani Lo Celso’s first of the season (v Aston Villa) and Celin Bizet’s solo goal for our women’s first team (v Liverpool). 4 6 UNDER-18S THFC KEY WIN OVER COTTAGERS Our Under-18s produced an excellent away performance to beat league rivals Fulham on 9 December. We got off to the perfect start as our first attack resulted in an early corner which Callum Olusesi duly steered in from close range just two minutes in, before the attacking midfielder doubled our advantage with a neat touch and finish on 22 minutes. In a first half where we’d asserted our control in possession to limit our opponents to very little, the Cottagers were gifted a way back into the contest with a soft penalty as Tom Olyott halved the deficit from the spot in the 37th minute. The home side were then reduced to 10 men as Oliver Gofford was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Archie Chaplin on the stroke of half time, with Kieran Morgan netting the only goal of a more even second half to maintain our strong position at the top of the division. Spurs: Bloedorn, Black (Orr 71), Logan, Chaplin (c), King, Hall, Morgan, Olusesi, Ajayi, Lehane (Beggs 74), Adewole. Substitutes (not used): Warren, Adelusi, Egan-Riley. UNDER-16S GET OPPORTUNITY AT BARNSLEY A particularly young side travelled to Barnsley to complete our Under-18 Premier League Cup campaign on 12 December. Already eliminated from the competition, the final group stage game presented an opportunity for a large number of schoolboy players to get an early experience of the demands of competitive Under-18 football – indeed, seven members of our starting line-up were Under-16s players, with a further two coming off the bench in the second half. Barnsley’s experience and physical advantage ultimately told, as they converted a 1-0 half-time lead into a 5-0 victory at their training ground. Fabio Jalo was responsible for four goals, with Rafael Monteiro also on the scoresheet. AWAY AGAIN IN FA YOUTH CUP We will travel to face Burton Albion in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup. Burton defeated Aston Villa in their third round tie, while we secured a 5-1 win over 10-man Brentford. The match will be played on Tuesday 16 January, kick-off 7pm. THFC UNDER-18S 4 7 Here in the matchday programme, we give you a chance to get to know our latest intake of first-year Under-18s players. Today, we meet MIKEY MOORE… NAME: Mikey Moore. POSITION: Attacking midfielder. BORN: 11 August, 2007, in Southwark. LAST SCHOOL: Strood Academy. WHEN DID YOU FIRST JOIN SPURS? “I came in when I was seven and signed when I was eight.” HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN AN ATTACKING MIDFIELDER? “I’ve played quite a few positions. I’ve mainly been an attacker but I’ve played anywhere from holding midfielder all the way to anywhere across the front line. I’ve been challenged quite a bit.” WHO DO YOU LIKE TO WATCH IN TRAINING? “Probably James Maddison. I just think he’s an excellent creative figure in the team and when he gets the ball he’s always trying to make something happen. He’s linked up effectively with Heung-Min Son too, so both of them are players who I look up to. I’ve done a couple of Son’s celebrations as well – we were in the training ground one day earlier this season and I said to him before we played Arsenal Under-18s that I’m going to score tomorrow and do the celebration and the next day I scored, and me and Yusuf Akhamrich did it together!” IF YOU COULD MEET SOMEONE FAMOUS DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? “I’d say Conor McGregor. He’s certainly a bit of a character!” FIRST FOOTBALL SHIRT? “I had a Millwall kit but I also remember having an Inter Milan shirt – I loved that one when I was younger. My dad bought it for me when I was about four.” ANY PETS? “I’ve got a Dobermann called Tye. He’s only a pup – he’s five months old at the moment. I’ve had two previous ones as well, Lacey and Lexi.” ANY OTHER TALENTS? “I like to do a bit of boxing as a hobby, especially in pre-season.” FAVOURITE FOOD? “I really enjoy Chinese food.” IF YOU COULDN’T BE A FOOTBALLER, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE INSTEAD? “My dad does demolition. He comes home and his back is hurting him – that’s tough work. I don’t think I could do anything outside of football so I’d probably go into coaching, but if I had to pick something, maybe I could follow my dad’s example.” GETTING TO KNOW… MIKEY MOORE DATE H/A OPPOSITION RES AUGUST SAT 12 A ASTON VILLA 0-4 SAT 26 A ARSENAL 4-2 SEPTEMBER SAT 2 A BLACKBURN (U18 PLC) 3-0 SAT 16 H BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 4-2 SAT 23 H READING 3-0 SAT 30 A WEST BROMWICH ALBION 2-1 OCTOBER SAT 7 H NORWICH CITY 7-2 SAT 21 H CHELSEA (U18 PLC) 3-4 SAT 28 A CHELSEA 4-3 NOVEMBER SAT 4 H CRYSTAL PALACE 2-5 SAT 11 A LEICESTER CITY 4-1 DECEMBER TUE 5 A BRENTFORD (YOUTH CUP] 5-1 SAT 9 A FULHAM 3-1 TUE 12 A BARNSLEY (U18 PLC) 0-5 SAT 16 H WEST HAM UNITED 2-4 JANUARY SAT 6 A SOUTHAMPTON 11.30AM SAT 13 H ASTON VILLA 12PM TUE 16 A BURTON ALBION 7PM SAT 27 A BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 11.30AM FEBRUARY SAT 10 H LEICESTER CITY 11.30AM SAT 17 H CHELSEA 11AM SAT 24 A NORWICH CITY 12PM MARCH SAT 9 H SOUTHAMPTON 11.30AM APRIL SAT 6 A READING 11.30AM SAT 13 H FULHAM 11AM SAT 20 A CRYSTAL PALACE 11AM SAT 27 H WEST BROMWICH ALBION 12PM MAY SAT 4 H ARSENAL 11AM SAT 11 A WEST HAM UNITED 11AM P W D L F A D PTS TOTTENHAM 11 8 0 3 35 25 +10 24 WEST HAM 10 7 1 2 29 12 +17 22 CHELSEA 9 7 0 2 34 17 +17 21 CRYSTAL PALACE 10 5 3 2 28 19 +9 18 FULHAM 10 6 0 4 29 23 +6 18 ASTON VILLA 10 5 1 4 33 25 +8 16 ARSENAL 9 4 3 2 22 17 +5 15 LEICESTER CITY 10 3 3 4 20 25 -5 12 WEST BROM 10 3 1 6 19 33 -14 10 BRIGHTON 10 2 3 5 21 30 -9 9 SOUTHAMPTON 10 2 2 6 14 27 -13 8 READING 9 2 1 6 11 22 -11 7 NORWICH CITY 10 1 0 9 19 39 -20 3 FIXTURES & RESULTS UNDER-18s PL TABLE HOME GAMES PLAYED AT HOTSPUR WAY ALL FIXTURES SUBJECT TO CHANGE UP TO AND INCLUDING 19.12.23

We’d trailed 2-0 but salvaged a point thanks to goals from Harry Kane and our Danish midfielder. THE SOUND OF CHRISTMAS Matching up the music of the festive period with some great Spurs moments! DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS Harry Kane drives home from the penalty spot in the early stages of our 3-0 win at Burnley on 23 December 2017. It was the first of a hat-trick for the forward, who added another treble on Boxing Day as we defeated Southampton 5-2 at Wembley to make it a Christmas to remember.

We won 2-0 in freezing conditions! LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW! A heavy snowfall as Heung-Min Son looks on during our FA Cup tie against Rochdale at Wembley Stadium in 2018.
