THFC THE SOUND OF CHRISTMAS 5 1 FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK Gareth Bale adorns a giant billboard in Times Square, New York, in 2013 as his stature within the game continued to rise. It’s fair to say the Welsh forward enjoyed a fairytale of a career with ourselves, Southampton, Real Madrid, Los Angeles FC and the Wales national team. BLUE CHRISTMAS Great celebrations in our all blue away kit during our defeat of Southampton at St Mary’s, three days before Christmas in 2013. Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice and Jos Hooiveld put through his own net in our 3-2 victory. WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TIME We’ve had some wonderful results around the festive period down the years, but few better than in December 2018. We’d already beaten Southampton, Leicester and Burnley in the league before drawing at Barcelona to book our place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Then we beat Arsenal at the Emirates, Dele Alli (pictured) on target in the Carabao Cup victory, before destroying Everton (6-2) and Bournemouth (5-0). It really was a wonderful Christmas time!
THFC T H E D A LY C O L U M N 5 3 ble to him, one would doubt Postecoglou will stick to one centre-forward option. Son has played unbelievably well there, while it’s a position Brennan Johnson is familiar with too. And versatility is key in this team. Just look at Dejan Kulusevski’s work in recent games playing centrally or out wide. There are options to catch out opposition sides mid-game and it also helps accommodate injuries in the squad. However, Richarlison has firmly re-established himself as a number 9 option. “He won’t be starved of opportunities here” said Postecoglou recently, “and it’s up to him to take those and take his football to the kind of level that we believe he can.” Perhaps that’s the assurance he needs to kick on in N17, wherever he plays. must confess, Richarlison starting as the centre-forward against Newcastle caught me out. Having swapped positions with Heung-Min Son in September, Spurs had reaped the rewards. Richarlison was creating from the left-wing – getting assists against Fulham and Liverpool for Son, who looked every part the penalty box striker. But back through the middle, the Brazil international has three goals in two games. “For Richy, I think (striker) is his best position, but earlier in the year, he wasn’t fit,” explained Ange Postecoglou, after the 4-1 win over the Magpies. “We were kind of getting him through games, but you can see since he’s come back, he’s playing a lot freer physically.” November’s surgery to deal with an issue that had plagued him for eight months, has obviously been key. “He’s had a similar pain, like me” said Son, who struggled through an underlying injury last season too. “I kept telling him ‘Do the surgery’ because it helps you lots. Today you can see that his movement is so much smoother.” The 26-year-old took his two goals against Newcastle with ease, while a commanding leap to head home against Nottingham Forest showed he looked like a player enjoying renewed confidence. In the air, there is no greater threat amongst the Spurs forward options. Just think back to his goals against Marseille and Liverpool last season, and Fulham and Sheffield United this. Facing teams that look to defend deep, like Forest did last week, it is another way to goal. So, can we expect to see him playing predominately as a striker going forward? It’s difficult to say, because Richarlison’s versatility has always been an important factor. “The player himself is fast, strong, very good technically, and he can play in three positions across the front line,” revealed Marco Silva in 2018, when the pair were reunited at Everton. Carlo Ancelotti also used him in a variety of attacking roles while in charge at Goodison. But for 51 per cent of his total playing time there, Richarlison played at centre-forward. He even scored more goals than England’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin during the four seasons he was there. It’s also his position for Brazil, having started four of their five World Cup games in Qatar up front – scoring three times. But in a post-Harry Kane era, and with such versatile attacking options availaThis week, SPURSPLAY’S ROB DALY discusses the versatility of Brazilian striker Richarlison, as he prepares to face his former side today… W O R D S B Y R O B D A LY I RICHARLISON HAS RETURNED FROM SURGERY PAIN-FREE AND IN FINE FORM

5 6 THE SPURS SHIRT THFC
THFC THE SPURS SHIRT 5 7 A new edition of The Spurs Shirt book, which chronicles the history of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur jersey, is now on sale in the Spurs Shop. This highly-acclaimed official publication tells the club’s story through an incredible collection of historic match worn jerseys and this new, fully revised and updated edition, includes a one-off shirt worn on the club’s 125th birthday It’s always good to have something new to wear to a party, and Tottenham Hotspur’s 125th anniversary celebration was very much one of those occasions. In keeping with the significance of the landmark, kit suppliers Puma produced a one-off shirt for the club’s anniversary match, at home to Aston Villa on 1 October 2007, that was steeped in Spurs history. The smart light-blue-and-whitehalved shirt that Puma produced was based on the colour scheme of one of the club’s earliest kits. These colours were worn by us during the 1885/86 season and were originally donned in tribute to the dominant FA Cup-winning Blackburn Rovers side of the era. Even without the history, there was no doubting that this 2007 version of the shirt was smart and stylish, and with White Hart Lane a sea of matching blue and white flags, the famous stadium was a colourful place indeed when the anniversary occasion kicked off. In keeping with the previous 125 years of the club’s history, the match itself was a thrilling, topsy-turvy affair. Out of form and in the relegation zone, we found ourselves 4-1 down after an hour and the atmosphere was decidedly flat. The away fans mocked the home support by ironically singing ‘Happy Birthday’, but just 30 minutes later the stadium was a riot of flag-waving colour and noise as we salvaged a dramatic 4-4 draw in the final seconds. Wearing the shirt featured here, Dimitar Berbatov had given us the lead, before the visitors did their best to upset the party. But then Pascal Chimbonda and Robbie Keane scored late goals and, just when a point looked unlikely, Younes Kaboul levelled in stoppage time to provoke scenes of wild celebration. Berbatov was one of only three players (the others being Chimbonda and Aaron Lennon) to wear the longsleeved version of the shirt that was described as being ‘reverse-halved’ and had an alternating halved pattern on the sleeves. Only short-sleeved shirts were available to buy as limited-edition replicas, which makes any long-sleeved match worn shirt especially rare and valuable. And even though he was injured and didn’t play in the game, the club presented skipper Ledley King with his own numbered version and the legendary defender, now an ambassador for the club, lists it amongst his all-time favourite Spurs shirts. “I loved the 125th anniversary one,” he said. “Even though I didn’t play in the game, it was really special to me, and I’ve kept the one I was given.” THE STORY OF THE SHIRT The Spurs Shirt: The Official History of the Tottenham Hotspur Jersey is available soon from The Spurs Shop, price £40.

I was able to speak and understand a little bit of English as well, but I only properly started to speak English when I moved to England when I was 26 years old to sign for Wigan Athletic. “I can also speak Haitian Creole, which obviously has some French parts to it. When I was at Spurs, I was often speaking French with my French team-mates at training and in the games, people like Steed Malbranque and Younes Kaboul. “My English was okay at that time and it was easy for me to communicate with all my team-mates. Obviously when I played in France, I was just using French and I still speak it fluently, so it’s no problem whenever I go back there.” Which other language do you wish you could speak? “I would love to speak Spanish! In French, you might say ‘sa vient’ when there is an opponent coming to win the ball – that’s like ‘man on’ in English, but it doesn’t quite translate exactly the same.” WITH PASCAL CHIMBONDA PASCAL CHIMBONDA AND STEED MALBRANQUE (POSSIBLY SPEAKING FRENCH...)

THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 6 9 Few shirt numbers in football evoke memories quite like the No 10 jersey, with some of the game’s all-time greats having worn the shirt throughout their careers. Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Zinedine Zidane are just some of the legends who wore No 10 at the very height of their careers – and you could add the name Harry Kane to that list in years to come. The goalscoring machine wore our number 10 jersey on an impressive 358 occasions – only Heung-Min Son (No 7) has worn an individual shirt number more times for us in the Premier League era – and became our all-time top goalscorer wearing the famous number. Kane graduated from our Academy to become one of the world’s top forwards, combining the goalscoring qualities of a traditional number 9 with the playmaking talents of a No 10 as he rose to the very pinnacle of the game here in N17. He initially broke through here at Spurs with the No 37 on his back, scoring his first goal against Shamrock Rovers in that jersey in December 2011, and he wore it on 26 occasions before moving up to the No 18 shirt for the 2014/15 campaign. Kane netted 31 goals in 51 appearances that term, but when Emmanuel Adebayor left us in the NO.10 in that NUMBER As this season marks 30 years since the introduction of squad numbers in English football, we take a closer look at the names and numbers that have formed our matchday squads since 1993/94 – and even further back in our history. N0.10s…APPEARANCES SINCE 1993/94 1. Harry Kane 358 2. Robbie Keane 260 3. Teddy Sheringham 230 4. Emmanuel Adebayor 112 5. Steffen Iversen 62 6. Les Ferdinand 59 7. Darren Bent 43 8. James Maddison 12 9. Rafa van der Vaart 2 summer of 2015 and vacated the No 10 shirt, Kane moved up the order to take on that jersey. His first competitive appearance as our No 10 came at Old Trafford in a
7 0 I N T H AT N U M B E R THFC 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on the opening day of 2015/16. It proved to be an eventful season as we pushed Leicester City in the race for the Premier League title, with Kane netting 25 times to win the first of three Golden Boots in the competition. With the number 10 on his back, the goals just continued to flow, never scoring less in a season than the 24 he got in 2018/19 and 2019/20. And he wrote his name into club folklore in February this year when he scored his 267th Spurs goal to beat Manchester City and take him to the top of our all-time goalscoring charts, overtaking a record set by Jimmy Greaves which many thought unbreakable. The first player to wear our No 10 following the introduction of squad numbers in 1993/94 was Teddy Sheringham. He was already our recognised number 10 the season before, wearing the shirt 47 times and featured a further 150 times in it once squad numbers became official. Of course, after leaving us to spend four years with Manchester United, Sheringham returned to N17 ahead of the 2000/01 season and was fortunate enough to be given the No 10 jersey again, wearing it a further 80 times over the next two years. Following Sheringham’s first departure, it was Les Ferdinand who took over the No 10 shirt when he arrived from Newcastle United in the summer of 1997, donning the shirt 59 times during the next two seasons. We then had a reshuffle for the 1999/2000 season, with Darren Anderton moving to No 8, Ferdinand to No 9 allowing Steffen Iversen to become the latest recipient of the number 10 shirt. The Norwegian striker had been wearing No 18 for the previous three season and went on to feature 62 times as our No 10. He then relinquished the jersey for Sheringham’s return in 2001. Second behind Kane on our list of No 10s since 1993/94 is Robbie Keane, who was handed the jersey after Sheringham left in 2003. For the 2002/03 campaign, the pair joined forces as our strike partnership with Keane in the No 22 shirt, but the Republic of Ireland international was the perfect man to replace Sheringham as the focal point of our attack. Another goalscorer extraordinaire, Keane racked up the goals during five years as our No 22, in which time he made 222 appearances before leaving for Liverpool in July 2008. Within six months he was back in N17 though, having to wear our No 15 shirt for the latter part of the 2008/09 season after Darren Bent had taken over the number 10, featuring 43 times during that campaign. Keane returned to the No 10 shirt for the next two seasons and went on to make another 38 appearances in it. Emmanuel Adebayor featured 112 times for us wearing No 10, but almost didn’t have the jersey for the 2012/13 season. Signed on loan from Manchester City in 2011, the Togo international played 37 times during 2011/12 before returning to his parent club. At the start of the 2012/13 campaign, Rafa van der Vaart was given the vacant No 10 having previously donned No 11 for us. We then signed Adebayor permanently and he had to take the No 25 shirt, wearing it once in a 1-1 draw with West Brom on 25 August 2012. By the following weekend, van der Vaart had been sold to Hamburg, so we were able to register Adebayor as our No 10 again! Currently, it’s James Maddison who occupies the number 10 shirt, the only player on our list who isn’t a forward. He featured 12 times for us before picking up an injury against Chelsea in November. IN OPPOSITION… As one would expect, a quick look down the list of Everton’s No 10s down the years reveals a string of top-class forwards. Wayne Rooney had the jersey on his return for the 2017/18 season, while the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Duncan Ferguson, Tony Cottee, Andy Gray and Bob Latchford all scored goals as the Toffees’ number 10. On the flip side, defenders Paul Power, Martin Keown and Derek Mountfield also wore No 10 at times, and it’s former Spur Arnaut Danjuma who currently occupies the jersey for the Blues. NO.10s…TOP 10 APPEARANCES ALL-TIME (1946 TO PRESENT) Some great names feature on our all-time list of No 10s, but it’s the mercurial Glenn Hoddle who leads the way, wearing the famous number more than anyone else in the club’s history. A product of our youth set-up, the midfielder had established himself in the side with the No 4 on his back before wearing No 10 for the first time in a 1-0 win over Birmingham City on 14 October 1978. Over the next eight seasons, he was a regular on the teamsheet, going on to feature 373 times as our No 10. Another legend on our list is Martin Peters, whose 60 appearances in the jersey in 1972/73 is the most by any of our No 10s in a single season. 1. Glenn Hoddle 373 2. Harry Kane 358 3. Teddy Sheringham 277 4. Robbie Keane 260 5. Martin Peters 256 6. Eddie Baily 233 7. Gary Lineker 139 8. Terry Venables 136 9. Jimmy Greaves 132 10. THFC I N T H AT N U M B E R 7 1 One of the most famous nights in our history was made possible by the exploits of a player wearing our No 27 jersey. Spurs fans worldwide will always remember where they were when B ra z i l i a n fo r wa r d L u c a s M o u ra completed his hat-trick with a 96thminute winner to give us the most dramatic victory over Ajax in Amsterdam and book our place in the 2019 Champions League Final. Signed from PSG in January 2018, he was given the No 27 shirt and handed his debut in a Champions League clash with Juventus the following month, scoring his first goal in our colours on his first start, against Rochdale a few days later. For the next four seasons, Lucas featured prominently for us, even if many of his appearances were from the bench. A popular figure around Hotspur Way, he was always whole-hearted in his commitment with plenty of skill and an eye for goal. He wrote his name in our history books with the firstever hat-trick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he netted a treble against Huddersfield Town in only the third senior game played at the new venue. He left Spurs on a high as well, scoring a stunning solo goal in stoppage time against Leeds United in what was his 211th and final appearance for us, all of them with the No 27 on his back. Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer had been our No 27 in the two seasons before Lucas’ arrival. The centre-half joined us from Cologne in May 2015 and featured in Europa League, League Cup and FA Cup matches before making his Premier League debut in our 3-1 win at Crystal Palace in January 2016. He made 31 appearances for us before joining Stoke City in August 2017. First to wear our number 27 shirt was Stephen Carr, although he only featured twice in it during September 1993, when he made his first team debut at Burnley in a League Cup tie and his league debut against Ipswich Town. Other players to make single figure appearances in our No 27 are goalkeeper Ben Alnwick (3), Yago Falque (5) and Dave McEwen, a young forward who played three times in the jersey in 2000/01, having featured once the year before wearing No 23. Calum Davenport joined us from Coventry City in August 2004, but had loan spells with West Ham, Southampton and Norwich City before first donning our No 27 jersey on his debut against Manchester United in April 2006. THFC my favourite... M Y FAVO U R I T E , , , 8 1 Another week, another installment of our popular feature, as we ask our fans to pick out their Spurs favourites on a variety of subjects. Today’s interviewee has been a fan since 1961… MY FAVOURITE GAME Winner: 1972 UEFA Cup Final, second leg. After my then favourite player, Alan Mullery, opened the scoring, we spent the rest of the match singing in the Park Lane. Runner-up: 1984 UEFA Cup Final, second leg. What could nearly equal being at the Lane, when winning a European trophy? Doing it again! MY FAVOURITE PLAYER Winner: Jimmy Greaves. Lethal near goal. Greatest goal scorer of his era. Scored 44 goals in 57 games for England. Set many goalscoring records. Won the FA Cup twice and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. Great entertainer. Runner-up: Ledley King. What used to happen when an opponent was about to score? Answer: Ledley. Our 2008 Carling Cup winning captain. Long serving player at his only club. Pace, strength, composure on the ball and leadership. Earnt respect at the highest level despite restricted training due to his knee injury. MY FAVOURITE GOAL Winner: Jimmy Greaves. I was in the Park Lane in 1968 when he scored the best home goal I have seen. Brought down Pat Jennings’ clearance and beat everything Leicester City in his path. Would have won a Puskas Award, but there wasn’t one! NAME: BRUCE STALLARD AGE: 68 Runner-up: Heung-Min Son, 51 years later. From the South Stand, I saw his solo goal as we beat Burnley 5-0. Picked up the ball (Jan Vertonghen assist), on the edge of the penalty area, before scything through the Clarets defence, virtually the length of the pitch before slotting home. Won best goal at the FIFA Best awards. MY FAVOURITE SPURS KIT Winner: The shirt worn in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final. Loved playing and getting muddy in my all-white kit, no replicas then. Runner-up: The 1991 FA Cup Final winning kit. MY FAVOURITE AWAY DAY Winner: Margate 0 Spurs 6. Attracted 14,169 spectators including my late father, his friends and I. He subjected his mates to Made in Japan and A Question of Balance whilst in the car, played Frank Sinatra when we got home. Great day out. Largest ever crowd to watch a match in East Kent. Runner-up: Craven Cottage. Married Jen in 1978, she’s a Fulham fan! Want to feature on this page? Just send us your detailed answers to the five questions above and we’ll do our best to include you!
