are immensely sad.

“When we did running drills, he would often say when
everyone would be very tired, maybe on the limit, he would say
‘now the work starts’ or actually, in his words, ‘work starts now’.
He would be right next to us while pushing us to the limit and
motivating us. That showed a lot, that your limit is further than
you first believe, than you first think and that is something the
team has taken on board.

“I would like to add that I am very proud to share a dressing

I think that is the best way to honour him. And also, to his family, I
send a lot of emotions and thoughts in this moment.”

In their post-match interviews following the victory over
Brighton on Saturday, many of the players dedicated the win
and performance to Gian Piero – and it certainly was a display
of which the Italian would have been proud.

After taking a deserved lead on 22 minutes through a Harry
Kane header, Brighton, who had been unbeaten at home since
our last visit there in March, came out all guns blazing as they
looked to build on their bright start to the season. However, with

is as high as always to be successful together.”

Pierre is hoping our good form can continue this evening
as we face a huge clash in our Champions League group stage
campaign with the visit of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Having spent five years in Germany with spells at three
different clubs, Eintracht are, naturally, a side he knows well,
and that is without mentioning that he played alongside their
captain Sebastian Rode at Bayern Munich while midfielder
Jesper Lindstrom is currently a team-mate of his on the inter-
national stage.

However, since Pierre’s spell in Germany, the fortunes
of Eintracht have changed quite significantly. From being a
newly-promoted Bundesliga side a decade ago to Europa
League winners and Champions League competitors now, Die
Adler are riding quite the wave in European football.

“It’s fantastic what they did last year,” Pierre said. “In terms
of creating the result in the Europa League, I feel that everyone

up for a League Cup Final against Liverpool
when Frankfurt arrived in N17 on 3 March.

But we made heavy going of the
game on the night and needed a goal
from centre-half Paul Miller to break the
deadlock on the hour mark. Micky Hazard
fed Ossie Ardiles, his shot was blocked but
Miller was there to rifle home the rebound
from 20 yards.

We then added a crucial second with
seven minutes left, Hazard jinking past two
defenders before firing home, although it
needed a vital save from Ray Clemence to
deny Norbert Nachtweih what would have
been a key away goal for the visitors.

CONTINUING THE SEQUENCE

Our pairing with Eintracht Frankfurt in

this season’s competition continues our

run of having faced German sides in every

one of our six UEFA Champions League

campaigns so far.
Back in 2010/11, we were drawn alongside

Werder Bremen in Group A and, on our return
to the competition in 2016/17, Bayer Lever-
kusen were among our Group E opponents.

The following two seasons saw us face
Borussia Dortmund – in Group H in 2017/18
and then the Round of 16 in 2018/19 – before
we came up against two German sides in
2019/20. First up was Bayern Munich in
Group B and then RB Leipzig in the Round
of 16.

Our Champions League record against
German teams has seen us win five, lose five
and draw three times.

Meanwhile, the only player to have
turned out for both of tonight’s teams is
Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is featured in our
Making Their Debuts article on p24 of this
evening’s programme.
