in November 2010, and, that night, a certain Niko Kranjcar was STOKE IN 2010
gracing the White Hart Lane pitch.
A cultured midfielder, technically gifted and with quality from
a dead-ball situation, Niko spent three years with us between
2009 and 2012 and, despite only making 70 appearances for us,
he became something of a crowd favourite.
Having begun his career with Dinamo Zagreb in his homeland
of Croatia, incredibly scoring on his league debut at the age of
just 16, Niko quickly became a star of his country’s national
team and made a name for himself with his showings at the
2006 World Cup. Those performances ultimately earned him
a move to the Premier League as he joined Harry Redknapp’s
Portsmouth later that summer – his league debut for Pompey
coincidentally came at the Lane in the October.
And that was the start of an incredibly bright spell for the
midfielder and Pompey as they went on to lift the FA Cup the
following year which also saw them qualify for European football
for the first time. During that period, Niko also scored that infa-
mous long-range strike against England at Wembley for Croatia
which saw the Three Lions miss out on a place at Euro 2008.
Then, come the summer of 2009, the midfielder was on his
way to north London where a strong contingent of Croatians
was growing. Already in our ranks were the likes of Luka Modric
and Vedran Corluka with Stipe Pletikosa still to come – an
unprecedented number of Croatia internationals at a single
Premier League team. And that group became part of one of
our greatest sides in the modern era as, in 2010, we qualified for
the Champions League for the first time.
“It was a really, really great move for me,” Niko recalled as
he reflected on joining us in 2009. “Obviously, I had my national

With the 2022/23 season marking the launch of SPURSPLAY – the Club’s new home of exclu-

years. The feature continues today with a look at various television adverts with a Spurs

was certainly not the first time a player
wearing our kit had appeared in a television
commercial. In 1976, Pat Jennings – wearing
a green Spurs Umbro shirt – met ‘Tony
the Tiger’ for a kickabout for a Kellogg’s
Frosties advert. After making a save from
a schoolboy footballer, Pat invited Tony to
“try your luck” with a shot of his own. Tony
stopped to have a bowl of cereal before
taking to the field and collecting a pass. He
accidently fell on the ball, which sent it into
the back of the net as ‘Big Pat’ ‘saved’ Tony,
rather than the shot!

There was also a comfortable win
for Atletico Madrid, who cruised to
a 4-0 win in Spain against Maltese
outfit Hibernians and finished the
job with a 1-0 victory in the return. The
tightest tie of the round was played
out between Napoli and Ujpest
Dozsa from Hungary. The Italian
side struggled past Bangor City in
the preliminary round, losing 2-0 in
Wales before turning it around with a
3-1 win in Naples. With no away goals
rule back then, it meant a play-off to
decide who progressed, with Napoli
edging through 2-1 on home soil. And
they needed another play-off to get
past Ujpest in the first round after
both matches had finished 1-1. Again,
the decider was played in Naples and
home advantage counted once more,
Napoli winning 3-1.

With his insight into German football, SPURSPLAY
commentator ROB DALY is perfectly placed to give his
lowdown on tonight’s opponents…

Another one looked likely in March 2016.
With “Die Adler” struggling, they brought in
a new head coach. It was the first in a series
of understated and shrewd moves that has
turned them from inconsistent strugglers to
Champions League competitors.
Niko Kovać arrived to, firstly, save the
club from the drop. Nürnberg were beaten
in a fraught relegation/promotion play-off.
Within a year, Frankfurt were in a German
Cup final, losing to Borussia Dortmund.
Twelve months later, they’d be winning
one, beating Kovać’s future employers
Bayern.
Adi Hütter stepped in to replace him from
Swiss side Young Boys and guided Eintracht
to seventh, ninth and fifth-place finishes. A
run to the Europa League semi-finals in
2019, losing to eventual winners Chelsea on
penalties, was a notable highlight.
In 2021, Hütter departed to Borussia
Monchengladbach and in came Oliver
Glasner. The Austrian had done well at
Wolfsburg, but few could have predicted
he’d guide his side on a remarkable march
to Europa League glory.
After comfortably winning their group,
they beat Real Betis, the mighty Barcelona
