04 1. In common parlance people tend to care more about their physical health than their mental health. So, according to you, what is mental health? Mental health is not something abnormal. There are multiple definitions for mental health. However, mental health can be defined as being a productive individual, having a balanced and healthy life. But, it is a fact that is neglected in society. 2. Why should we be aware of it? According to WHO, mental health is a collection of all physical, mental as well as social well-being. We can also add spiritual well-being to it. In fact, not having an illness does not mean you are a healthy person. We must give much more priority to mental health just as we care for our physical health. So, it is a combination of all the three aspects. 3. Are there any common mental health issues that you have noticed among the undergraduates? you become stressed. Stress is not a mental illness or complicated concern. It is something quite normal. However, long term stress can direct you to depression and anxiety 4. Should we be ashamed of finding solutions for mental issues? What is your advice regarding this? If we suffer from physical sickness, we consult a doctor. So, just as that, why can’t we find solutions for something that bothers us mentally? Especially in South Asia, mental health is a taboo in society. There are so many stigmas around it. Thanks to the younger generation nowadays, people tend to be aware of mental issues and it results in finding solutions to overcome mental illness. People should consider this because prioritizing mental health is a right, not a choice. So, one should not be afraid or ashamed of this. As undergraduates, of course, you have assignments stress, examination stress and at the same time you have relationship problems. You may also encounter hostile situations with your family, friends and your lecturers as well. As a result, “Staying mentally healthy means being a productive individual, having a balanced and healthy life. But, it is a fact that is neglected in society.”
5. Anxiety is considered a common aspect. How do you define anxiety? Does it lead to depression? Anxiety is fear which is built with regard to the future. The longer it lingers in your system, your body starts to have interest in it. Then you start to get anxious about everything. And yes, it has the possibility of leading you to depression and it affects your daily life too. Nonetheless, anxiety can be addressed through medications and therapies, which involve replacing anxiety-provoking thoughts with more constructive ones. 6. What is your definition for depression and what are the causes for depression? In fact, depression is a misunderstood word. It can simply be defined as feeling low. At the same time, people need a drastic change in their behaviour. There are many symptoms of depression. Some key symptoms may include lack of interest in daily activities, lack of self-worth and existing of suicidal thoughts for more than two weeks consistently within someone. For your next question, yes, there are many causes for depression. Childhood traumas, negligence, drastic changes in life and long term drug use are some of them. Most importantly, not getting proper treatments for depression can lead to self-harm and may even compel people to commit suicide. 7. Are there specific levels of depression when it comes to seeking medical assistance? Yeah, there are different kinds of depression such as mild to moderate depression. The way depression affects is different from body to body. Someone might get rid of it very quickly whereas some might not. It depends on their support system. 8. What are the other mental issues that we should be mindful of in order to lead a healthy life? Well, other than depression, long term stress and anxiety come to the front. Additionally, there are some specific phobias such as fear of public speaking and social phobia. They actually affect a person’s social life. In addition, some people go through Bipolar Disorder and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) due to many reasons. Further, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can happen if someone witnesses a shocking incident, road accident and also due to some childhood traumas. There are individuals who self-diagnose assuming that they might be having those health issues by searching it right away from the Internet. However, it is always better to consult a clinical psychologist for these conditions. 05
Interviewed by: Leo Pabasara Ilukpitiya Leo Navodya Dhananjani Scripted by: Leo Maleesha Wijesinghe 06 9. How should we practice mindfulness? It is quite easy. Nowadays we tend to multitask in our daily lives, but sometimes, we forget to pay attention to one thing. When we do an activity, it needs our attention. Mindfulness is focusing on one thing at one time and it is easy. By setting aside a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, thoughts, and sensations, you can cultivate a greater awareness of the present moment. Mindfulness encourages acceptance of whatever arises, whether it's pleasant or unpleasant, and allows you to respond to situations with clarity and calmness. Through regular practice, you can develop a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you, leading to increased peace of mind and overall well-being. 10. Is there any message that you would like to give to society? Taking care of your mental well-being is a personal responsibility that should not be stigmatized. People should not be ashamed of mental issues as the saying goes that even healers need to heal. Embracing self-acceptance and validating your emotions are essential aspects of well-being. Seeking help and support don't indicate weakness. In fact, opening up can break the stigma surrounding mental health. Additionally, it's advisable not to remain in environments where respect is lacking. Maintaining self-respect is quite important. Besides, I would recommend you to make a happiness jar. Before you go to bed, write something that brings you happiness. I believe it is very healthy and would bring you happiness with peace. Being worried about your past and being anxious about your future make you forget to live in the moment. Rather, embrace yourself by being grateful for every tiny blessing and positive aspect in your life. These can be some key elements in promoting a healthier attitude in ourselves. “Embrace yourself by being grateful for every tiny blessing and positive aspect in your life.”

In this ever-evolving world, the complexities of modern life bring various challenges that impact our mental well-being. This unspoken threat silently touches everyone, leading to long-term mental issues. Recognizing this critical need, we aimed at raising awareness of the significance of mental health and providing practical tools to get rid of those issues through the project “MindU 2.0” initiated by the Healthcare Avenue. The first phase of the project “MindU 2.0” emerged as a pillar of assistance for mental well-being, planned to unfold across three key phases. Each phase is tailored to address the unique challenges faced by different communities, covering universities, schools, and workplaces. The first phase, held on 19th December, featured an interactive session conducted by Dr. N.D.G.Gayantha, Senior Lecturer, Department of Psychology of the University of Kelaniya. This session targeted the undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya educating them on practical ways to manage stress during tough situations such as academic workload and exams. Moreover, 15 “ M i n d U 2 . 0 ” – F i r s t P h a s e Navigating minds through practicing stress management tools and mental health awareness sessions… we are grateful for the support received from “Kalana Mithuru Sewana” of the university, which further contributed to the success of this event. Furthermore, the initiative was completed successfully, with the enthusiastic participation of both Leos and non-Leos, making the project “MindU 2.0” a milestone in the
Penned by: Leo Navodya Dhananjani journey of the Healthcare Avenue. Hence, we express our heartiest gratitude to all who supported us in transforming the “MindU 2.0” project into a successful initiative. This was a collective journey towards a society where mental health is not just a topic of conversation but a fundamental aspect of our everyday lives. “MindU 2.0” is more than a project, t's a commitment to nurturing a community that stands strong in overcoming obstacles. As the Healthcare Avenue, we are here to provide our assistance in enhancing healthy minds and cultivating positive attitudes. Indeed, the real wealth is health. Let us guide our minds in the right direction. 16
Healthcare Highlights The fact that Healthcare Avenue reigns at the first place among the numerous avenues of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya can be mentioned with great pride and immense pleasure. Even from the name “Healthcare” it is evident that the Avenue is primarily focused on improving the community, addressing not only physical health but mental health as well. Healthcare Avenue continues to contribute to society by comprehending the value of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many projects successfully completed by the Avenue, some are still in the process. Among the projects done so far, “One Blood 2.0” and “MindU 2.0'' are vastly important as they were subjected to ceaseless appreciation. The focus of the project "MindU 2.0" is mental health, and as part of its first phase, the Organizing Committee collaborated with Dr. K.R.N. Harshani, Senior Lecturer in Psychology and the Director of "Kalana Mithuru Sevana" of the University of Kelaniya to hold an awareness session about the significance of mental health for undergraduates. Besides, the seminar series organized for the Ordinary Level students of Siddhartha Central College, Wellampitiya further highlighted the excellence of Healthcare Avenue in supporting the community. Besides, this magazine, "MindU 2.0", a Special Edition of Aurora, serves as the final part of the project "MindU 2.0" which showcases the significance of mental health in multiple ways. It also appreciates the talents of the creative souls who submitted their creative pieces of writing on mental health. (Leo Term 23/24) 17
There are still some important projects to be initiated such as “EcoAura 2.0” and a project for hospital renovation, representing Healthcare Avenue. While the Executive Board of the club gives the entire guidance, the Directors, the Leadership Body, the Organizing Committees and other members of the Avenue shoulder the responsibilities with their invaluable dedication for the projects by being their backbone. Thus, Healthcare Avenue consistently earns recognition for its excellence, demonstrated by the prestigious golden badge it proudly receives each month. 18 Penned by: Leo Maleesha Wijesinghe
Past Leo District President, Leo District 306B2 - Leoistic Year 17/18 Past President, Leo Club of University of Kelaniya Leoistic Year 15/16 He started the Leo journey as an inaugural member. He is one of the prominent leaders who has taken the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya to new heights and continues to play his role as a leader spreading positivity around the world. 19 THILAKARATHNE LeoPasan i t h INTERVIEw Mr. Pasan Thilakaratne is a social worker currently residing in Canada working with a non-profit organization called 'A Way Home Kamloops'.
To start with, could you introduce yourself and share a bit about your Leo journey, especially as one of the Past Presidents of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya? 1. My name is Pasan Thilakarathne. I joined the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya as an inauguration member in the Leo Term 14/15. And then I gradually made my way through becoming a Director which resulted in me becoming the president of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya during the term 15/16. Then in the following year, I became the District Vice President and then the District President for Leo Term 17/18. When speaking of my Leo journey, we only had a minimum of 20 members back in 2014 in our charter days. When I became the Club President we were a group of 45 members. But at the end of my year as a president we reached 220 members, marking the highest growth of a Leo Club not only in the District but also in the Multiple. Becoming the largest in an active membership club was a huge achievement. So, talking about my Leo journey and my past presidentship, these are the highlights. Volunteering plays a vital role in one’s personal life in understanding the needs and values of the society. When we look at different aspects of society, we understand what issues need to be addressed. Finally, being able to solve issues such as hunger, poverty, educational disparity, and environmental problems that the government could not solve is a great achievement for volunteers and NGOs. 2. In your view, what role does volunteering play in creating a sense of community and making a positive impact on society? 20 “When you enter the corporate field, there is no room for mistakes. This is the only place where you can learn from your mistakes and do better as you move into your career field.” 20
21 3. What were the most memorable volunteer projects that you took part in, which had a significant impact on the community? I think I took part in nearly 300 projects in my whole Leo journey. Out of these projects, one of the most memorable projects was project “Sanhinda”. We carried out this project in Matale, choosing one of the rural schools in the area. Another memorable project was “Palama Yata Sinaha Ahuru” which was done during my District Presidentship. This was conducted, targeting Children's Day and it was held near the slums at Kelaniya bridge in Peliyagoda. Another memorable project was initiated for the differently abled at the School for Differently Abled in Kelaniya. We also celebrated Valentine's Day with the cleaning staff of the university and it was another remarkable project we witnessed. There was another project conducted in the Down South collaborating with the university’s Humane Society. So, these are the few of my favourite projects in my Leo journey. 4. During your tenure as the President of the Leo Club of University of Kelaniya, were there any significant challenges you encountered? There were many challenges, so I will narrow them down. Managing membership, particularly with limited resources in 2015 when popular mobile apps like WhatsApp were less prevalent, posed a significant challenge. Other major challenges included uniting all faculties, breaking down year and faculty barriers, addressing financial difficulties as a university club, and balancing club commitments with academic responsibilities. “When it comes to social services, we only have one language which is compassion.”
5. How has your experience with the Leo Club influenced your own personal growth and development? Volunteering with the Leo Club transformed me. I used to be a very fun-oriented and easy going character. But after becoming a President I started to build my leadership skills. I learned teamwork, empathy, time management and public speaking, and work ethics through my volunteering journey. There are further aspects like financial management, human resources management and project management which I developed. These are the facets you'll encounter as a volunteer which shape your character. 6. In your opinion, what are the key benefits of volunteering for an individual who is seeking a successful career? When you work in a co-operative society, managing the skills as an individual will help you shine among others. This is where you can learn from mistakes with support and guidance. In the corporate world, there's no room for mistakes. So, volunteering is a unique opportunity to grow before entering your career field. Talking about my personal experience, I first started working as a Project Co-ordinator at the German Cultural Institute. I had no background in Project Management or HR, but they hired me solely based on my experience as a Leo. 7. Could you shed some light on how volunteering is perceived in Western countries like Canada? Two years ago, I remember the President of the Lions Club was from Canada. So, Canada and other European countries have an important relationship with the Lions Club. As part of the Lions Club, the Leo Club also plays an important role. Being a member of a prestigious club like Leo Club and Lions Club will help you a lot because when you work in these countries, they understand how much effort and dedication you have put into the projects you have done in your country. 22
8. Did your volunteering and past Leo activities have a positive impact on your migration and current employment? Definitely yes, because when we apply to universities, they tend to ask what extracurricular activities we did during our studies. You will be helped in such cases when you provide necessary documents, proving your active involvement in these clubs. As for my current job, I work as a social worker with a non-profit organization called “A Way Home Kamloops”. We provide housing to the homeless and to drug recovering youth. A Bachelors in Social Work is required to get such a job. Even though I don't have this specific degree, still my work experience and engagement in the Leo Club helped me find the job. 9. Finally, what is the piece of advice that you would like to give to the undergraduates who strive to build a future of their own? My first piece of advice is to allocate time to focus on developing your soft skills. Most importantly, language barriers should not be taken as barriers because when it comes to social services, we only have one language which is compassion. Being active in these clubs will help you navigate your language problems. Also, it does not matter if you are in a club or not, be a responsible citizen and try to make the society a better place. I will end my part with this quote “One simple act of kindness can create an endless ripple”. So, try to make a difference in society even with the smallest act. “As an undergraduate always allocate time to focus on developing your soft skills.” Interviewed by: Leo Pabasara Ilukpitiya Leo Himashi Gunasekara Scripted by: Leo Upani Geesari 23
24 T h e P h i l o s o p h i c a l T e a c h i n g s o f B u d d h i s m o n M e n t a l H e a l t h Buddhism is a non-theistic religion as well as a philosophy which developed in the Eastern world 2500 years ago as a teaching of the Lord Buddha. The central belief of Buddhism is reincarnation; it means the concept of people reborn after death till attaining enlightenment. The teachings of Buddhism with its emphasis on mindfulness, compassion, and self-awareness, offer valuable insights and practices that can positively impact mental health because there lies a strong interconnection between mind and body. This article will discuss the teachings of Buddhism about mental health. he concept of mindfulness Mindfulness, which is regarded as “Sati” in Pali, refers to being fully present and aware of one's thoughts, feelings and surroundings without judgment at the moment. It is an integral practice to attain Nirvana. Hence by practicing mindfulness, individuals can cultivate inner peace, reduce stress and anxiety and can improve their overall mental well-being. The concept of impermanence Buddhists believe that everything, including our own thoughts and emotions are impermanent, and nothing remains as it is forever. It helps to let go from the attachments without curtailing feelings and emotions which can harm one's mental strength. This understanding can help individuals navigate difficult emotions and follow the feeling of acceptance in life. The concept of compassion Compassion is regarded as an essential behavioural change to the path of enlightenment. As its main idea is a wish to free others from suffering, the practice of compassion for oneself and others can develop a greater sense of empathy, connection and emotional resilience. Therefore, the practice of compassion is beneficial for those struggling with conditions like depression and anxiety.
Meditation Meditation is a core practice in Buddhism. Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) are examples of Buddhistinspired mental health interventions. Meditation helps to let the mind be quiet and focus on the present moment. It results in reduction of rumination, improvement of concentration and cultivates a greater sense of clarity and peace of mind. “Samatha Bhavana” and “Vipassana” are two major meditation practices to promote mental health. It can be concluded that Buddhism offers a holistic perspective for understanding the mind and cultivating mental well-being. By incorporating Buddhist principles and practices such as mindfulness, the notion of impermanence, compassion and meditation in daily life, individuals can develop greater self-awareness, resilience, and emotional balance which ultimately lead to improved mental health. Buddhism, thus, significantly influences the enhancement of mental well-being. Penned by: Leo Thimasha Gunawardhana 25
A G l i m p s e i n t o M e n t a l H e a l t h i n C a t h o l i c i s m Religion is as old as mankind. A religion is a belief in a higher, unseen, controlling power. Any religion has an impact on the mental health of human beings. Catholicism is also one of the main religions in Sri Lanka and has compliance worldwide. Catholics hold beliefs such as regarding the oneness of God and the incarnation of Jesus Christ as the son of God. Catholics also believe that God’s design is marvellous and that there’s nothing He cannot do. Therefore, we need to remember that Christ is present in those who are sick, physically or mentally.. “I was sick, and you visited me.” (Matt 25:36) When God incarnated as Jesus, he healed the patients like lepers and raised the dead. Hence, Catholics also called Jesus a divine physician. So, why can’t we think that God helps His people to live in good mental health? Pope John Paul II once confirmed this when he said, “Well, Christ took all human suffering on himself, even mental illness.” With that, I can precisely state that a man who lives with God never falls down mentally. He or she can purely live in good mental health. Catholics can develop mental health by following ways. Prayer and meditation Catholicism emphasizes prayer and meditation as ways to connect with God and find inner peace. This may initially result in finding the best solutions for our mental health challenges. The regular practice of praying provides comfort and strength during difficult times. 26
Many Catholic churches offer the service of pastoral counselling, which is provided by priests, deacons, or trained lay counsellors. Also, any person who is suffering from mentally bothersome problems can directly go to a church father and smoothly solve their issues and release their mental stresses with spiritual guidance. Further, there are community support groups in churches, and charitable works that also directly impact individuals’ mental health and wellbeing. There is an association called the “Association for Catholic Mental Health Ministers” (ACMHM), whose members help create a healing presence in the lives of those suffering from mental illness. Overall, Catholicism's broader principles emphasize care and support for individuals facing mental health challenges. Finally, I promise that life around God can never be let down by anyone, mentally or physically. Sacraments As Catholics, there are seven sacraments. These sacraments, such as Confession and the Eucharist, provide spiritual healing and renewal to those who attain them, and they may also have positive effects on mental well-being. E x p l o r i n g M e n t a l H e a l t h i n H i n d u i s m Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and it is essential to understand how different religions and belief systems approach this topic. In Hinduism, one of the oldest religions in the world, mental health is intricately connected to spiritual well-being and personal growth. This article aims to explore the concept of mental health in Hinduism, highlighting the various practices and teachings that promote psychological well-being and balance. The Mind-Body-Spirit Connection In Hinduism, the mind, body, and spirit are seen as interconnected aspects of the self. Mental health is not viewed in isolation but as part of a holistic approach to well-being. According to Hindu philosophy, a healthy mind is essential for spiritual growth and self-realization. Practices such as Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness are not only physical exercises but also tools for calming the mind and achieving mental clarity. Karma and Mental Health Central to Hindu belief is the concept of Karma, which suggests that our actions have consequences that shape our present and future experiences. Understanding Karma can have a profound impact on mental health, as it encourages individuals to take responsibility for their thoughts and actions. By practicing self-awareness and mindfulness, one can cultivate positive Karma and create a healthier mental state. The Role of Dharma Dharma, or one's duty and ethical responsibility, is another crucial concept in Hinduism that influences mental health. Living in alignment with one's Dharma is believed to bring inner peace and fulfillment. By following the principles of Dharma, individuals can cultivate a sense of purpose and direction, which are essential for mental well-being. 28
The Power of Bhakti Bhakti, or devotion to a higher power, is a significant aspect of Hinduism that can greatly impact mental health. By surrendering to a higher force and cultivating a deep sense of love and devotion, individuals can find solace and comfort in times of distress. Bhakti practices such as chanting, prayer, and worship can help alleviate stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of connection and unity with the divine. In conclusion, mental health in Hinduism is approached from a holistic perspective that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. By incorporating practices such as Yoga, meditation, Karma, Dharma, and Bhakti, individuals can cultivate a healthy and balanced mental state. Ultimately, the teachings of Hinduism offer valuable insights and tools for promoting mental well-being and inner peace in today's fast-paced world. Penned by: Leo Agisha Ahilan 29
I s l a m i c P e r s p e c t i v e o n M e n t a l H e a l t h In the discourse on mental health, exploring diverse cultural and religious perspectives is essential for a comprehensive understanding. In Islam, mental well-being is viewed through a lens that unites spiritual, psychological, and social dimensions. Islam provides a sense of purpose and emotional fulfillment through attachment to Allah, the Sole Creator of mankind. At Islam’s core is the concept of servitude, surrender, and submission to the Divine. And, in doing so, Muslims are, counterintuitively presented with the opportunity to attain true freedom and liberation from the shackles of this world. Islam's perspective on mental health is based on the idea of holistic well-being, which includes mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health. The Qur’an, Islam's holy book, emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and harmony in all aspects of life. Surah AlBaqarah (2:286) one of the chapters of the holy Qur’an, states, "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." This verse underscores the belief that challenges, including those related to mental health, can be overcome with faith, resilience, and support. One of the fundamental principles in Islam is the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Islam encourages individuals to reflect, contemplate, and seek guidance in navigating life's challenges, including those related to mental health. Prophetic traditions (Hadith) provide insights into coping strategies, emphasizing the power of prayer, patience, and seeking professional help when needed. Islam also emphasizes the significance of inner peace and tranquility. Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28) states, "Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and Salah (prayer) serve as spiritual practices that cultivate mindfulness, gratitude, and emotional regulation. Engaging in these rituals can provide solace and comfort at times of distress. Moreover, Islam promotes a culture of compassion, empathy, and community support. The concept of Ummah highlights the interconnectedness of believers and the importance of aiding those in need. Mosques and Islamic centers often serve as safe spaces where individuals can seek guidance, counselling, and support from knowledgeable community members. 30
In conclusion, Islam provides a comprehensive structure for understanding and addressing mental health challenges. By integrating spiritual, psychological, and social dimensions, Muslims can nurture resilience, seek support, and promote well-being both individually and within their communities.
