REFLCETIVE WRITING

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

4.1 Application of knowledges, skills and experience in undertaking the task
(Knowledges gained)
During five (5) months of industrial training at Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam,

the organization has provided a lot of experienced and new knowledges about technology
adoption and development. The components are aligned with the objective of industrial
training which is to encourage students to apply the skills and knowledge gained at the
university that can benefit the organizations. Some of the subjects in university has
provides hands-on practice during the industrial setting.

Faculty of information management has come out with good course outline that is useful
for working environment. For example, the subject Basic Web Design and Content
Management (IMS456) is extremely useful while involved in developing a website
portfolio as one of the tasks in Maker Lab. Some web development basics are used to
better acquaint with web application task. All the theories learned at the university are
applied during a website planning, designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining of
the website. It also helps with the knowledge of web content management in creating an
informative website.

Besides that, one of the requirements of industrial training is to produce or conduct special
project that give benefit to the company. In order to fulfill this requirement, subject of
Designing Instruction for E-Learner (IMA 656) helped in the process of designing and
planning the content for e-learners. The content development task has been successfully
delivered and achieved the company needs.

About two months has been spent to learnt about 3D design and 3D printing. Knowledge-
based in Multimedia for Information Professionals (IMS 457) has been utilized in
producing variety design and 3D products. Adobe Software skills that were taught by the
lecture of the subject has been very beneficial during industrial training.

Also, new skills that are crucial to current industrial revolution were successfully adapted.
The training and facilitation available at Maker Lab help to identify and achieved personal
potential in 3D printing development which has been a current need. The engagement
through the use of technologies and 3D applications has altered the productivity for self-
directed study and revision.
Reflecting on experiences with 3D design software such as Tinkercad and Fusion 360 has

4.2 Personal thoughts and opinion
4.3

We all know that practical experience is the best, and internships give students

that hands-on experience they need. Within two months in Maker Lab before I was

assigned to work remotely from home, the time being has giving me the taste of real

working life before I graduated.

I am oftentimes blown away by the rapid prototyping of industrial products and design.
Before this, I only heard about 3D printing but never be able to see or executed any 3D
printing business. The opportunity to be a part of Maker Lab has giving me the full access
to learn and see myself how the 3D printings really works. The Maker Lab contains
thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment which I gained the chance to be able to use it
on daily work basis. I feel welcomed in Maker Lab as my supervisor put trust on me to
properly handle the lab’s facilities even when I am new to it.

Maker Lab UiTM has always embraced the concept of "everyone can learn" to all trainees
which in turn inspires me to do my best during this internship program. As a student of
information management with zero knowledge of 3D printing, the first month was a very
tough time for me. I need to learned 3D design skill quickly and efficiently to ensure
every task given has been successfully delivered. Now, I realized that nothing is
impossible to achieve success if we keep positive and focus on our goals.

My other opinion about Maker Lab UiTM is they practice knowledge sharing among

colleagues. In this company, trainees came from different academic background, and

other formal intern here are really expert in design. However, they have been so

generously to give me guidance and willingly to help whenever I have difficulties on my

work. They are not reluctant to pass along the knowledge to others within the

organization. I really amazed by the team spirit and morale showed among Maker Lab

team member.

41

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

Furthermore, my supervisor was a pleasantly easy to approach and to talk to. She always
provides the support and encouragement for me to go extending my own limits.
Sometimes, when I felt down and stress while carried out the tasks given, she always
gives me motivation and got to keep me focused. Besides that. all trainees in Maker Lab
UiTM are open to share their opinion and ideas in any aspect, anytime and anywhere.
Mostly at once a week, the Industrial Supervisor will hold a meeting with all trainees to
monitor the task given, having a discussion about workplace environment, and at this
time, trainees are also given the opportunity to complaint about anything, whether it is
work or personal matters.

In addition, a positive work environment is extremely important for the success and
productivity of any organization. Maker Lab UiTM is a one of organization who has
provided a positive work environment which tend to be reflected in my quality of work.
For examples, they created a positive workplace environment by encouraged all trainee
to take a quick break from their work such as do some stretching, go outside and get some
fresh air. Other than that, this company also provided a relaxing atmosphere with
comfortable furniture, good working equipment and clean working space.

Last but not least, I can rate Maker Lab UiTM as a company who has strong ambition to
achieve their goals. This company always came up with new ideas to produce something
that has a potential to increase the company's growth, and at the same times gives benefits
to others. In order to produce a good product, I was taught to identify the problems that
people faced and the output should be fulfil user needs. Without this element, the quality
of work may be vary as planned. Thereby, it is indirectly kept me focus, so that I can
completely dedicate to my work. I also able to express my creativity and encourage
myself to work harder to reach the high level of work performance.

4.3 Lesson learnt
4.4 Industrial training is a medium for student trainer being exposed to real nature of
work. It is good for students who has none of working experience to learn about working
environment. There has varieties of lesson learnt by the trainee during industrial training.

4.3.1 Technical
During the industrial training, the primary lesson that I learnt was the expertise or

skills required to complete tasks in the field nature of business of the organization itself
and their daily procedure that needs to be done. While I may have different academic
learning, I able to familiarize myself with new skills and able to adjust working style
according different workflows demands in the workplace. Also, my internships have
provided me a better understanding of my skill set and how can I used it to further my
career in the future. It also allows me to test the theories and absorb lessons that has help
the completion of all tasks and assignments.

4.3.2 Professionalism
In working environment, it is important to appear like a professional. To uphold

my professionalism and workplace etiquette, I have learned how to speak, behaved,
dressed, and maintained effective work habits in Maker Lab. For instance, I learned to
manage my emotions whether its frustration, irritation, worry or unhappiness. I keen to
react positively and productively on feedback to promote understanding and self-growth.
Most importantly, I learned to respect my surroundings and colleagues’ surrounding in
order to establish good relationships with people in the company.

43

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

4.3.3 Time Management
Internship has taught me to be better at time management while working. After I

acknowledges my purpose in Maker Lab, I used that as a foundation to begin finding
ways so I can contribute to the company. Many of my tasks were daily duties so I divided
time strategically in order to avoid become stressful with overloaded task. I learned to
make a list of every work assigned based on the deadline and how important they are.
This help me break down my work and how I should arrange the time spend on each task.
To some extent, I have extra time for other tasks and allow me to stay productive. Proper
scheduling of the tasks has helps me increase productivity and making sure my priorities
are in line with the company.

4.3.4 Self-Motivation
Doing internship not only help develop my professionalism, it also has

strengthened my self-motivation and initiative. Thriving in the emerging of technological
advances with Maker Lab in first place has been a daunting task as I need to work with
software and tools usually I not familiar with. Self-motivation is the key force that drives
me enough to keep learning new things and complete all the tasks and meets the company
deadlines. Overall, internships have taught me to push myself as the only way to move
forward, and there will be moment I would surprise myself with what I'll be able step up
to.

44

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

4.4 Limitation and Recommendation
4.5

Maker Lab were seen as a resource providing developments in educational
technology. These types of spaces empower students to see themselves as inventors,
builders and creators. In spite of that, there is still room for improvement that Maker Lab
can do for their users which can support the unit mission and vision.

4.4.1 Lack of Awareness Among Library Users
From my personal point of view, Maker Lab has offered a great facility to

students, faculty members, and staffers but they lack in getting community engagement
or awareness and use of library makerspaces. The reason could be assumed upon the
marketing strategies adopted by Maker Lab. I also noticed that the frequency of Maker
Lab visits is not encouraging. Although the space is open to everyone and visitors are
welcome to stop, I have watch students just passing by and sometimes hesitated to come
and see what’s inside.

Recommendation
In my suggestion, Maker Lab can put a signage on the window - a direct invitation

to "Come on in!" or signs that showcase a particular type of product offer. It also would
be helpful if library can place a freestanding banner by the entrance to attract observers'
attention. The highlight will help visitors to quickly recognize Maker Lab.

Another suggestion is that Maker Lab can use television area in the library to promote
Maker Lab awareness. In the past, previous interns at Maker Lab have work on a
corporate video for the lab. The video can be played on the screen television which can
increase users’ recognition on Maker Lab services and facilities. It is one of method to
use visual marketing and spread awareness.

45

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

4.4.2 Slow Marketing Strategies
Maker Lab also runs a store online to allow trainees to sell their 3D printed

designs. Every product listed on the site are custom made to order. Customers can
purchase any item online where it can be ship and they also make it available for pickup.
Otherwise, customers can create their own design and send it to Maker Lab to be printed.
On top of that, the existence of Maker Lab online store allows trainees finding a way to
store their projects, especially if they don't have their own online shop. Also, this platform
can be a great way for makers to use their skills to make some extra cash.

Despite the site featured interesting 3D printed products to the market, it would be such
a loss if the page failed to reach their potential customers. In my observation, the product
catalog is not updated frequently. It can be understood that keeping the website's content
updated and fresh is not an easy job to do as sometimes Maker Lab has dealt with
understaffing. Most new products are not advertised and people didn’t know they are
available. Any 3D printed product made that have potential deals would be ignored, or
otherwise useless without a proper marketing.

Recommendation
Thus, from my standpoint, Maker Lab should build a path to boost the visibility

of their busines. They can attract and acquire more local customers by using leading e-
commerce platform such as Shopee. It is a platform tailored for the region allowing the
seller to publish a product listing and make it visible to potential buyers. Furthermore,
the promotional tool on Shopee can help seller to attract more clicks on their products.
Also, in-store search in Shopee benefits sellers when customers search for any matching
product that meet their needs or desires. For example, Maker Lab has the ability to create
custom-ordered items such as characters biscuit mold cookie cutter. This cookie cutter
mold would actually increase a user demands especially in pastries market. Any designs

46

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

can be uploaded from a CAD model and printed in just a few hours. Nonetheless, Maker
Lab can deliver the positive effects of 3D printing accessibility to society and benefit the
trend of revolutionize the world of production.

4.4.3 Internet Connection Problem
As the company are fully utilized system and technologies support in their daily

operations, any buffer or system failure will cause a major issue for each staff to perform
their tasks. Notably, the staff perform their task using the library shareable Wi-Fi. When
the maximum numbers of users reach to its limits, the connection are really poor. The
library is getting full visitors every day to used free Wi-Fi, thus, this make the problem
even worsen. When the Wi-Fi is slow, it affected all operation as of most of the task are
perform online, and there is no other network available.

Recommendation
As the solution for Internet connection problem or not functioning, the company

can install a private Wi-Fi at the premises. A handy and affordable wireless network is
enough to support the daily operation in Maker Lab since there is only total of four people
in the unit at one time. By doing this, the company able to reduce the data loss and reduce
delays on the daily procedures, notably, for the operation department.

47

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

4.4.4 Insufficient Workforce
In terms of workforce, currently the department is having a problem in employing

a new staff since the company nature of business is unique from another unit. It is a
struggle for the company to search for a person with a knowledge and experience in wine
to work with them. And sometimes the unit is not operating if no intern available there.

Recommendation
Employ and conduct training to fresh workers or employ internship scholar.

Conducting training to the new staff can solve this kind of problem and if the company
did not have enough budget to conducting a training, they also can employ an intern
student after he finished his internship training in the company, which can reduce the
expense of the company to conduct training for a new employee.

48

Industrial Training Report | Maker Lab UiTM Puncak Alam

CONCLUSION

The industrial training activities and tasks were mainly to enable a trainee acquire
skills and link the lesson theory to practice in the industry so as to meet the labor market
needs. Besides, trainee able to gain skills and knowledge through informal learning in
organization. Through this industrial training, trainee would understand on how the real
industry work. The company has taught a lot of new things in the industry in term of work
tasks, goods employee personality and how to handle the matters and come out with the
good decision to resolve the matters.

The industrial training can be an eye-opener to how the real industry was work. Through
what the experiences, it shows the practicum course manages to teach the student different
management skills, hard and soft skills that cannot be gained in classroom. Besides, it
also can help the student to make an improvement in terms of skills such as
communication skills, abilities to work under-stress skills, decision making skills, time
management skills, and self-esteem skills.

In conclusion, industrial training is beneficial to all students to get the real-life working
situations and learning besides of getting the theoretical and learning part. It allowed
students to gain experience working in an organization while studying in order to
complete the courses. The industrial experience allows students to learn in a variety of
ways. Besides that, industrial training gives added value aside from theoretical knowledge

Tinkercad and create cut-outs.

iii. I played around with primitive shapes and tried
to combined in different ways to build a more
complex shape.

12 February 2020 i. I made a bookpage holder as my first 3D model.

ii. I learned the skills on how to refine the model
shape with former intern’s help.

13 February 2020 i. I had completed my first 3D design model.

ii. Send my project images to Dr Azma for her
comment and recommendations.

14 February 2020 i. Former interns, Karim, gave sharing lessons on
how to use the Ultimaker Cura printer; I learned
to handle Ultimaker 2 Extended and Ultimaker
3 printer.

ii. I learned on how to change the printer inks,
how to navigate the machine.

iii. I learned how to save 3D STL file and adjust
them on printer.

iii. I learned how to print a file from the SD card. I
took the opportunity to do it myself and learned

66

on how to operate the machine with the help of
my fellow friends.

17 February 2020 i. I learned on how to adjust the printer plate;
before printing and after printing. I took off the
plate and cleaned it in proper ways and put in
back on the printer.

ii. Learn to troubleshoot the printer. Sometimes
the nozzle can be jammed and I’ve been taught
on how to fix it and how to handle other issues
that might be occur.

18 February 2020 i. I tried to print my 3D model to see the outcome.

ii. I had changed the filament to white colour
which I wanted my product to be.

iii. I had successfully printed the model using
Ultimaker 2 Extended. My bookpage holder
were printed out perfectly during my first trial.

19 February 2020 i. I continued to edit my Googlesite profile. I had
added my first 3D project on the site.

ii. I tried to print my bookpage holder using
different filaments colours and different weight
to experiment with the functionality.

20 February 2020 i. I helped my friend, Ain, to shoot my 3D printed
bookpage holder that will be uploaded in
MakerLab website; the item will be sold as
UITM merchandise.

ii. We had a workshop on Fushion360 software,
conducted by Mechanical Engineering intern,
Luqman.

67

iii. I learned on how to sketch a model on
workplane.

iv. Luqman showed us on how to model a
screwdriver in Fusion 360. I managed to learn
to use tools such as ‘Sketch Constraints,
Revolve, ‘Extrude’ and ‘Appearance’.

21 February 2020 i. I had learned on how to produce a 3D printed
lithophane; it is a 3D images that displayed with
a backlighting.

ii. Karim had taught me on how to adjust the
setting on the lithophane generator software to
get a perfect build lithophane.

iii. I had tranformed my own photo into a 3D
printed lithophane using an online software; I
used lithophanemaker.com to generate my
model.

24 February 2020 i. I was assigned by Dr. Azma to learn on basic
phyton.

ii. I had joined a phyton classroom online; the link
was given by Dr. Azma.

25 February 2020 i. I had printed out my 3D lithopane image using
