This year in 2IC we have set high expectations whilst having an extraordinary amount of fun! Trying our best to laugh and learn in near equal measure. We threw ourselves into our first topic, Healthy Bodies & Healthy Minds, with children working hard to come up with healthy eating routines, exercises, hygiene tips and mental health exercises to help advise our parents that joined us for the exhibition. Our Changing World topic helped us learn about changes we face such as using renewable energy and our three R’s to help tackle climate change as well as learning about courageous individuals who themselves changed the world by standing up for what they believed in such as Rosa Parks and Emmeline Pankhurst. Some highlights are also our phenomenal trip to Fagnoon as well as the hard work the children put into their Diwali Assembly! There are so many moments throughout this year that we should be proud of, but what I hope we all remember is how much our mistakes help us grow and just how much we indeed have grown in just one year! PRIMARY MENTORS Art Therapy Zoe and Eric Art Therapy Pastoral Time Race and Equality Hope Art Therapy Eric and friends at the remembrance bench for his father. Grandmas are special! 94 The role of a mentor is similar to a mix of a counsellor and life coach. We use talk therapy, art therapy, story telling, play and listening in our sessions with children. We work with the child to help them overcome worries and anxieties and to help them find solutions and a new path forward. The pastoral rooms in school are magical places, they are places children come to and they are not worried to express their feelings or thoughts - they are safe and healing spaces. Our role is to support children through all emotional phases that they may go through in life. This may include moving to another country and leaving their friends behind, or it may be they are the one left behind and friends have moved on. We also support children through periods of loss that can be more serious, such as divorce or bereavement. We also support them with mental health concerns. We work with families to ensure that children receive the correct support for their needs, either in school or at an outside agency. We support teachers with positive behaviour management and facilitate restorative sessions when needed. We also have children referred to us for self esteem and confidence issues.

With 17 representatives from Year 2-6 and the Dutch Stream, our NCBIS Student Council came together to do a fantastic job this year! The representatives met weekly throughout the year to discuss ideas and issues arising, and each member showed the commitment and creativity needed to fulfill our mission statement ‘To give students a voice about the decisions affecting the school, making sure it is the best place it can be; bring out the best in everyone’. The children’s first task was to introduce themselves to the school in assembly. They all spoke confidently in front of the school, sharing their goals and aims for the year ahead. Soon after, they started putting their plans into action. First up was the ‘Blue Bands of Brilliance’ award. The school council discussed ways to make this award more accessible to all, and the new structure proved successful, with more children now receiving the coveted blue bands than before. Not only that, but they were also on hand during every assembly to help Ms Seeley give out the awards. In October, the children planned their first event to help celebrate Halloween, which involved a costume competition and parade. They enjoyed planning the event and also had the experience of judging the costumes and announcing the winners. The children took their role very seriously; it was very important for them to be fair. They thought carefully about the effort behind each costume as well as its impact. In fact, they did such a good job that Mr Chesters called upon them again to judge both poetry and costumes during ‘Book Week’! In December, the children planned and organised their first charity initiative: the shoebox appeal. They appealed for donations to be made in the form of gifts packaged up in shoeboxes for boys and girls at the orphanage in Maadi. They made a promotional video about their appeal and spoke passionately about it during assembly. The donations came pouring in, and the gifts were gratefully received. For ‘Mental Health Week’, the children planned a fun disco for the children to enjoy. They created a playlist that had everybody dancing, and they also exercised their enterprise skills by collecting donations for the disco tickets. The proceeds from the tickets were allocated to buying some new mental health books for the library. More recently, the students were involved in the ‘Ramadan Bag’ Drive asking each year group to contribute items to make charity bags for the workers in our community – a token of our appreciation. The children created some fantastic posters to promote this amongst their peers. STUDENT COUNCIL Promoting Ramadan bags with some wonderful posters. Helping to pack the Ramadan bags.
