YEARBOOK 23

THE CHOIR The choir has worked really hard this year, and cooperated impressively well as a team, across all year groups from Year 1 to Year 9. They have been actively involved in all aspects of singing, ranging from internal concerts for school events such as International Week, and Family Day. Christmas Extravaganza, and school assemblies. They have also performed in public, at external concerts at the British Embassy and the Four Seasons, and at a music festival at Metropolitan School. I am really proud that the choir is bringing positive feedback to our school in the community while developing their High-Performance Learning. 149

Counselling Secondary Leadership Team Jennifer Burnett Deputy Head of Secondary Pastoral and Safeguarding Paul Rowe Head of Secondary Philip Stainton Deputy Head of Secondary Academic & Admin Dear Parents, Students and the wider NCBIS community, It is with great pleasure that I present the yearbook for the 23/2022 academic year. In the pages has been a year full of the events that are synonymous with New Cairo British International School, events that bring us together, events that make our school a community. the array of stalls, the sharing of cultures from around the world and of course, the amazing food that was on offer. It was not just me that enjoyed the day with a Year 8 student telling me that, ‘International Day is my favourite day of school, I look forward to it every year!’. There were many other highlights, too many to list here; however, I am sure as you browse the yearbook, you will be able to relive each and every one through the pictures that were captured on each of those special occasions. I hope you enjoy looking back at the 23/2022 academic year, now and in the years to come. I sign off with a special mention to those that are leaving for pastures new and for the Year 13s, for whom year at New Cairo British International school. They say time flies when you’re having fun. My year with the amazing 7A stars has certainly gone by in a flash. With a pinch of kindness, a dash of humour, a ton of intelligence, and a boatload of character, these tenacious tigers have clawed their way through the challenges of secondary school. I’m sure that you will go on to do great things, and I, for one, am proud of every single one of you. 158

This year started with 19 year 7 students who were ready to face any challenges that were put in front of them. I was immensely proud of all of you when we went on our trip to Ain Sokhna. It was clear to see that many of you were visibility shaken while completing the high ropes course. Seeing you overcome your fears was a real sight to behold. Morning registration is never dull and I’ve really enjoyed some lively debates during life skills lessons. 160

We’ve had a great school year in 7C. They began the year wide-eyed and wet behind the ears with a whole new schooling experience ready to challenge them. New responsibilities and greater autonomy was granted and they have handled adversity very well. From locker buddies to school trips to the fierce competitions within and outside of the class, the comradery and friendships formed or strengthened have been great to witness, with a core group welcoming new students into the fold while sadly saying goodbye to others. We’ve particularly been proud of many 7C students dominating the Year 7 leaderboard for achievement points for most of the Fall Term, learning from mistakes and maintaining a positive attitude, strong representation in awards assemblies from many of you, thoughtful questions and discussions in Life Skills, the mature and responsible vibe in the group, the expert daily riddle solvers, and of course the tutor board. Some memories that will stay with me will be: the excitement of our first game of GeoGuessr, that absolute feast at our Christmas party and the logic games we played, your various costumes on non-uniform days, Yousef’s animated semi-weekly rants, Seif’s confusion and denial about Air being the best House, the Great Coin Flip of 2023, Jaeyul’s laundry service, and of course, I think speak for all of us here, Andrew’s dancing. Good luck in the future; go and grow up into fine adults, but please also stay the sweet kids you are deep down inside. 162

8A is a class full of kind, respectful and hardworking students who are always striving to better themselves in many ways. Our first task of the year was to create a theme board that represented each students’ personality. The students together chose the title of “Keeping up with the 8Ks”. The students had fun and the board looked amazing! Our next challenge was to make up the classroom door to present the best Christmas theme. We had students coming in at break and spending their own time to contribute in making the door. The highest achievement for the year must be the achievement points. Many of you have received a high number and I am very proud! I would like to thank you all for a wonderful year. It has been fantastic to see so many of you win achievement awards in your respective subjects. This is a true reflection of your hard work and dedication. I would like to thank you all for being such amazing students. It was a pleasure to have worked with you and it’s been lovely getting to know you all. I wish you all the best going into Year 9. 164

What a wonderful group of young people! 8B is full of friendly, enthusiastic individuals, and I feel so fortunate to have worked with them since September 2022. I have witnessed the majority of these young people grow in stature and confidence throughout Year Seven and onwards through Year Eight. Members of staff teaching the group around the school have not only commented on the increasing range of outstanding individuals in the class, but more importantly, the hard-working, enthusiastic and good-natured approach all these young people consistently show. Members of the group have taken part in Challenges Week residential visits, and they have participated fully in the ECA programme. The group takes a keen interest in discussions and debates in both tutor time and through the Life Skills programme. 8B has consistently been a high achieving tutor group in Year Eight, and individuals are regularly rewarded for the number of achievement points they attract from members of staff. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their support and enthusiasm throughout Year Eight, and I wish them a great Summer vacation before moving on to Year Nine in September. To the students that have already left the school or will be leaving at the end of the year, I wish them well and am confident they will continue to shine in their new schools. 166

Year 8C is a vibrant group of individuals who started off the year by winning the tutor board competition. They demonstrated both high levels of creativity and collaboration and reaped the rewards winning a pizza party. Mornings are spent puzzling over Mrs Burnett’s daily riddles to which it is often believed there are multiple answers and that the class’s answers are right and Mrs Burnett’s are only partially so. A talented, confident and unique group of students, year 8C enjoy being involved in all parts of the school and in this way have made their mark on the sports field, in the arts, in student council and within the classroom. We wish them all the best for year 9. 168

As guides to life at NCBIS, and more broadly Egypt, you have been without peers. The thoughtfulness shown, the care and attention, has been often humbling. The variety of characters within the group, the backgrounds and experiences, are tremendous. You are all growing, finding new limits and now starting to determine later directions for life as you go from KS3 to KS4. I wish you all the best for your futures and remember, the difference between who you are and who you want to be, is what you do. 174

It really has been an absolute joy to start each day with the 10A tutor group. Each student has their own individual qualities which make this group so special, while somehow bringing us all together. We have maintained an atmosphere of mutual respect and welcome each other every morning with a great deal of enthusiasm. It has therefore been a pleasure to be part of this wonderful tutor group this year and we will certainly all miss each other when the year is done. I am really looking forward to next year as we move onwards towards another successful year and some excellent IGCSE results. 176

I started the year with a class full of new faces. Having never taught any of you before I had the challenge of learning about you all. And what a learning experience it was. From the arguments, which were about everything, to trying to keepyou awake during Lifeskills lessons, at times it was a struggle but in the end we managed to get through the year unscathed (for the most part). It has been a pleasure having you as a tutor group and I am sure that you will go on to be a successful group of individuals in Year 11 and beyond. Good luck to you all!! 178

It has been a pleasure to get to know each of you, not just as members of 10C and the NCBIS community but as individuals who have shared your hopes, aspirations and sometimes very frank opinions with me over the last year. Your passion and personality shine through, and I have no doubt that each and every one of you will go on to thrive in the coming years whether that be as a doctor, lawyer, entrepreneur or sports star. However, first you have to navigate the most challenging year of your academic journey. This will no doubt present its challenges and require you all to show resilience and determination. Remain focused on your end goals and always believe in yourself. It was an honor to support you through year 10 and as you move into year 11 and beyond I hope you remember to ‘have a great day’ every day! 180

We can always count on Julia and Magd to start us off by battling who’s first to solve the daily riddle. They clearly made everyone jealous as someone new would jump in, trying to steal the title. Mornings flew by with Ammar freaking us out when arriving early, and Kenzi walking in late, pretending no one saw that. Saad’s continuous drawing attempts to zone out of Fahd and Laham’s daily discussions of cars, chickens and shady deals. I must give it to Aaron and his 99% success rate at using his phone undetected while calming Tommaso down who’s often displeased about something that he expresses to Sofia in Italian with everyone following the conversation with an absolute fascination with the melody across the room. But when things got ugly, we had Mazen and Abdel Rahman bringing balance back as they shut everyone up. Ms SaadAllah was the cherry on top who single-handedly managed three tutor forms and favoured us over the notoriously out-of-bounds 11B. YEAR 11A 181

CS - Year 11, I just wanted to start by saying how immensely proud of you all I am. It has been an absolute joy seeing you all grow into wonderful young people who deserve so much in life. If there is one thing this year group has taught me it is that I need to invest in a good pair of flat shoes! Don’t think I have ever run around so much. Nothing can take away the hard work and effort that you’ve all put into your education and hopefully will reap the rewards. I certainly hope that you all will travel and have lots of adventures in your future lives. Remember, Cairo is only a tiny portion of the world; make sure you get out there and put yourselves on the map. 182

Year 11B students have come a long way in this year – both academically and socially. Their growth and maturity is evident in every student, and we can only commend their progress. We are especially proud of how well they have prepared for their upcoming exams; Year 11 students always perform up to the best of their abilities when it comes to academic work. We hope that they use their results wisely and aim high in their future endeavours. We wish them all the best for their future – whether that be in school or beyond! Navigating the uncharted waters of adulthood can be difficult, but with guidance from your teachers, you’ll be on the right track. What a special and vibrant group you are. We truly loved every minute with you. You always put a smile on our faces no matter what and you are just the best start of the day. Having a mix of unique characters from the basketball player, to the one with the best smile and most uplifting “good morning!”, to the one with the most diplomatic Will Smith attitude, to the Earth house captain, to the kindest and purest soul, to the French expert, to the most composed boss, to the crazy yet calm “Ms. don’t worry” leader, to the “Hey queen” with the highest pitch laugh I have ever heard, to the most caring future leader helping everyone, and to the calmest and most kind-hearted soul. I will never forget your riddle reminders and your hilarious competitions solving it, and then saying “I said it first”. Your banter lights up our day as we enjoy watching the conversations that unfold that early in the morning. You completed your first IB year 12A, and I must say that you will be fantastic innovative future leaders because you have passion in everything you do! You are a group full of spirit and support to one another, and you are always eager to take up opportunities no matter what. You will always be a special memory for us - we are so excited to see what you will do next year, and later with the amazing career paths that await you. Stay happy, keep smiling, be there for eachother, and banter away! 188

A major highlight of my Egyptian adventure to date has been getting to know this amazing year 12 cohort. You are a truly impressive group of students and have made my induction into life in NCBIS a seamless and enjoyable one. An eclectic mix of future sports stars, leaders in industry and commerce I have no doubt, computer gaming geeks, science freaks, multilingual world travelers, more than a handful of Economics whizz kids and all-round great characters I have the pleasure of greeting me each and every morning. I am blessed with the group I have been entrusted with and I look forward to guiding them through their senior studies as best I can. Thank you for the daily laughs. Best wishes, Mr. Corrigan. 190

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what a wonderful experience it has been. As a new educator, coming into a school community can be a daunting experience, but from the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by the students in this group. Over the past few months, we have shared so many experiences together, from grappling with complex concepts in class to exploring the broader world through interesting life skill lessons. I have been continually impressed by the dedication and passion of this group, who have shown an unwavering commitment to their studies and a deep curiosity about the world around them. Of course, there have been challenges along the way. The demands of Year 12 can be intense, and there have been moments when it has been difficult to balance competing priorities. However, through it all, this group has remained focused, supportive, and determined to succeed. As a tutor teacher, participating in this journey has been an incredible privilege. I have watched as the students in this group have grown in confidence, developed their skills and knowledge, and begun to chart a path toward their future goals. It has been an honour to play a small role in this process, and I know that each one of these students has a bright future ahead of them. I want to thank the Year 12C group for allowing me to be part of their journey. It has been an incredible experience, and I will carry the memories of this time with me for years to come. I wish each and every one of these students all the best as they move forward, and I know that they will achieve great things in the years to come. 192

Well, Year 13, this is IT! The final stretch is done and you have almost concluded your NCBIS journey. I must say, it’s been a privilege for Miss Esraa and I to see you through the final year – or for some of you, the last few months. You don’t need us to tell you that Year 13 began life as two distinct entities and then, to paraphrase the words of that immortal collective of true feminist firebrands, The Spice Girls, “Two Became One”. I know Miss Mitchell would want to send you off with her best wishes, particularly those of you who began life on the Good Ship 13 LHM; we also want to wave you off with a spring in your step and wind in your sails. You will leave school with, we hope, some fond memories, life-altering experiences and long-standing friendships. For those of you going abroad to continue your educational development, enjoy the strangeness of it all – it will be an unforgettable few years. And those of you staying put in Egypt will have the bonus of loving your studies and being able to pop by to let us know how you’re getting on. You are a motley, but nevertheless talented and unique bunch, comprising former Head Students, social events organisers, football pundits, CAS legends, troubadours, sneaky gamers, serial absentees, borderline geniuses, deadline-dodgers and oddballs. But above all else you are our students and we know that when push comes to shove, you will all do your absolute best in the summer exams and will go on to enjoy success in all that you do in your lives. Don’t forget us when you get there!! 194

SECONDARY DEPARTMENTS 195

MATHS DEPARTMENT Mathematics is a subject that people have very specific ideas, feelings and attitudes about. In any social gathering, the word mathematics or mathematics teacher starts conversations of love and hate, achievements, and failure and many in between discussions. At NCBIS we want every student to finally, when they leave school, have a story of achievement. We in the Mathematics Department know that we can not all love mathematics and so we need to encourage our students to enjoy the mathematics lessons and all the small achievements during the year to finally accomplish the fulfillment of The only way to build a love for mathematics is to get to a point of understanding. . We want each and every student to get the “light bulb moments” and then give them the opportunity to apply this knowledge. Susan Wiid reaching their goal. 196

Science at NCBIS fosters the students’ natural curiosity in the physical world through scientific inquiry and a knowledge rich curriculum that gradually builds the skills of scientific inquiry over the key stages. Over their time at NCBIS, students develop their scientific knowledge and understanding through practice, perseverance and being resilient. Their inquiring minds find creative solutions to the big questions that our teachers ask, and become confident in taking risks in applying their knowledge to unfamiliar situations. We aim to support our students in their understanding of the challenges facing our modern world, enabling them to evaluate news stories and ‘fake science’ so they are able to make informed decisions in the future. Science students learn to understand and apply complex ideas using metacognition, through strategy planning and self regulation. This develops their intellectual confidence as they can link ideas from across all their subjects and wider life experiences seeing the bigger picture and alternative perspectives. Students learn to display and analyse data with speed and accuracy, using precision to draw graphs and critical and logical thinking to reach conclusions based on the best evidence available. We are incredibly proud of our high performing students and the resilience that they show us on a daily basis in their questions, ideas, and the challenges they overcome.
