MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH KOLLEL
Rabbi Naftoly Bier
As we celebrate thirty-two years, we proudly look to the past and look forward
with much anticipation. With the Almighty's help, the Kollel has served as a
beacon of light to thousands who have availed themeselves of the opportunity
to enrich their Jewish heritage and knowledge. The human warmth and
compassion of the Kollel Rabbis is a theme articulated by many, it facilitating
personal journeys of each and every person on an individual basis.
In the beginning of Exodus, we read the episode of Moshe Rabbeinu and the
""סנה, the burning bush. Moshe Rabbeinu noticing a bush burning but
miraculously it was not being consumed by the if ire, edged closer to it to study
what was happening; then the Almighty revealed Himself to Moshe.
The Medrash asks, "Why didn't the Almighty appear to him without the need of
the episode of the burning bush?" Chazal metaphorically address the issue. If a
person is in a dark cave he cannot enter the outside sunlit world, but rather he
must first sensitize his eyes to varying degrees of light leading ultimately to the
bright sunlight.
Spiritual experiences are similar. To speak to G-d, to enable the soul to
accomplish spiritual development and connection necessitates a deliberate
process. Only then can the human being have a true, uplifting, meaningful and
eternal experience.
One's sojourn on earth is a life long classroom experience, one of searching for
the truths of life, developing an understanding of it and ultimately integrating
3
these truths into one's life-style. Torah is the vehicle, G-d 's gift, instructing us
how to recognize and realize one's human potential. But as the Medrash
teaches us, this process must be done deliberately, with much thought and
planning, focus and determination, in order to develop true human greatness.
The Kollel is a place which has enabled countless people to touch Judaism,
drink from its overflowing cup, enriching their lives. It is done at a deliberate
pace, enabling one to truly integrate Torah into their lives; be it a class in
Talmud, Chumash, Halachah or a heart-to-heart talk about one's goals and
aspirations, one's achievements and frustrations. In a world where success is
defined by externals, by competing in the realm of knowledge, wealth, beauty
and physical strength, the Kollel - due to Torah- stands diametrically opposite.
Here, as G-d teaches us, success is measured by the individual's realization of
their unique personal abilities and goals, not by competing with another's
accomplishments.
Our honorees, Dr. Shlomo and Mrs. Tamar Faintuch, Mr. Ashkon and Dr. Tara
Hedvat, and Mr. Sam and Mrs. Sarah Tarlin personify those who recognize
that their G-d given talents were endowed to them in order to merge them with
the community. On His stage we are all unique; our special singular abilities
define our specific mission of how we are to create a better world. Our
honorees encompass the community as part of their larger extended family,
dedicating all of their unique outstanding features and qualities to the larger
goal of creating an environment infused with Torah and personal growth for
all.

MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH KOLLEL
Rabbi Zalman Leff
One of the main vessels of the Mishkan is the Holy Ark-the Aron Hakodesh. It is
situated in the Holy of Holies-kodesh Hakodoshim-a place where no one is
allowed to enter, except the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur.
The Torah commands us to put rings on the Aron with poles through them in
order to carry the Aron when necessary. We are prohibited from ever removing
the poles from the rings, even when the Ark is stationary in the Kodesh
Hakodoshim. The lesson that we can learn from this mitzvah, says the saintly
Chofetz Chaim, is that the people who support Torah study in this world have a
partnership with the lomdei Torah-the Torah scholars. Their partnership is an
eternal bond-in this world and olom habo, the world to come.
Pirkei Avos alludes to this partnership:
"אם אין תורה אין קמח אם אין קמח אין תורה
“If there is no Torah there is no form of sustenance,
and without sustenance there is no Torah.”
The Medrash tells us that the Aron is listed as the first of the vessels of the
Mishkan, to teach us that everyone has an opportunity to have their
portion-their unique connection to our Holy Torah.
The Kollel affords individuals, young and old, men and women, beginner to
scholar, the opportunity to become lomdei Torah, studying Torah on their own
level and also machzeikei Torah, supporting Torah scholars. I invite you to
study at the Kollel or join one of our classes in the greater Boston area. Please
call me to arrange a shiur or chavrusa that fits your needs.
Tonight we recognize three special families who are dedicated to the Kollel. Mr.
5
and Mrs. Ashky Hedvat have opened their home for classes being taught by
various Kollel Rabbis. Ashky has been instrumental for securing mortgages to
purchase housing for our Kollel families.
Dr. and Mrs. Shlomo Faintuch have been long-time supporters of the Kollel.
Shlomo and his sons can frequently be seen in the bais medrash of the Kollel.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Tarlin moved to Brighton five years ago to become close to
the Kollel community. The Tarlins together with their children are fixtures of
the Kollel participating in its many programs.
These three families have inspired our community with their selfless ddication
to the Kollel and its ideals strengthening our community. We are indebted to
them for their support of the Kollel.
I thank all of you this evening for your continued support of the Kollel. Without
your help we wouldn’t be here!
May you all merit the bracha of ברוך אשר יקים את התורה הזאת
Blessed is the one who supports the Holy Torah.

establish a paradigm to emulate.
Ashky and Tara Hedvat
A constant warm, embracing smile is always conveyed to others, a
reflection of their praiseworthy desire to enhance the lives of others on
all levels; spiritual, financial, personal. True representatives of a life
mission to encourage all to collaborate as one extanded family; they
have made a remarkable, indelible impression on many.

In memory of
HaRav Nachum Eisenstein זצ"ל
In his seven years as Rosh Kollel, he inspired the community with his
selfless devotion to each and every individual, caring for them as if they
were his only friend. With sensitivity, warmth, humility, compassion
and an acute understanding of every person, he inspired many to strive
and attain more spiritual lives.
With profound sensitivity and dedication Rav Nachum z”l enabled the
Kollel yungeleit to reach their potential, exhorting each and every
person to develop their unique abilities.
A Talmid Chochom of great stature, he served as a sensitive “posek”,
taking into account the personal needs of every individual.
Though it is close to twenty years since he left Boston, the indelible
impression he made on us all is an elevating and wonderful memory.

In tribute to the memory of
Rabbi Shraga Feivel Cohen Z"L
הרב שרגא פייוול כהן ז"ל
Mrs. Ruth Cohen ע”ה
מרת מעניא רחל בת יעקב צבי ע"ה
Rabbi Shraga Feivel Cohen was one of those rare individuals who was so
devoted to Torah as a Talmid Chochom, a Melamed Torah, that in the eyes of
those who knew him, he came to personify Ahavas Torah.
Born in 1924 on the Lower East Side of New York, Reb Feivel attended
Yeshiva Rabbi Jacob Joseph and graduated from Mesivta Torah Vodaath. He
attended the first class of the Telshe Yeshiva and spent eight years learning in
Ner Yisroel in Baltimore, where he received Smicha from Harav Hagaon R’
Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman zt”l. Rabbi Cohen then became a Mashgiach at the
Talmudic Academy in Baltimore and later continued in Torah education as a
Rebbe at RJJ for fifteen years.
After entering the business world, he relocated his family to Brookline,
Massachusetts, where he founded a successful insurance agency and was active
in communal affairs.
He and his wife Ruth raised four children. His two sons, Rabbi Zev and
Moshe, attended the Mesivta of Long Beach High School. Zev continued in the
Bais Medrash until he went to Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, where he
spent eight years in Torah study and growth. With his wife Michal and family,
he moved to Chicago as a founding member of the Chicago Community Kollel.
He spent seven years there, and is now the Rav of Congregation Adas
Yeschurun in that community.
Moshe not only assumed responsibility for his father’s insurance agency after
Reb Feivel’s passing, but also is perpetuating his father’s dedication to Torah as
an active member of the Board of Directors of the Kollel of Greater Boston.
Reb Feivel’s daughter Elaine also continues in her father’s ways, and is both a
true friend of the Kollel and active in her community. His youngest daughter
Judy, whose amazing strides and accomplishments in life brought him much
nachas, lives in Manhattan.
Rabbi Cohen, whose many responsibilities made great demands on his day,
always found the time to do a mitzvah or an act of chesed. People did not have
11
to ask him for favors. He had great intuition and he anticipated needs. He
truly gave of himself and never wanted or expected anything in return.
Mrs. Cohen was woman of regality who conveyed generosity and caring to
all. A warm, caring and dedicated friend to all, she leaves behind a wonderful
family who follow in her footsteps. Her kindness and warmth are a treasured
remembrance to all.
Reb Feivel and his wife opened their hearts to all those who entered their
home. Their home was also open to people staying in Boston for medical care.
They showed their warmth not only to the sick, but to their families as well.
They cared for all their needs, whether it meant giving their car, shopping,
sending a meal to the hospital, or spending hours talking to and consoling
people in despair.
Today, Rabbi Shraga Feivel Cohen's memory is perpetuated by the Kollel that
carries his name. The sound of Torah that reverberates in the Bais Medrash and
the spirit of Torah that permeates the community are ensuring the vitality and
vibrancy of Boston's Jewish community. Our sages taught, "Tzaddikim are
greater in their death than in their lifetime." The unwavering and beautiful that
Reb Feivel didn't live to see became a reality due largely to his sudden death.
Though we all sorely miss him, we take comfort in the eternal Torah learned at
the Kollel, which actualizes his biggest desire: a true and beautiful Makom
Torah in Boston.
Reb Feivel lives on in the family that carries his work and ideals, and in the
Kollel that nears his name.
An equal partner in her dear husband, Phil's, aspirations and dedication to
Klal Yisroel, Ruth Cohen took much pride and everlasting interest in the
development of the Kollel of Greater Boston.

In memory of
Mr. Edward H. Selib ע”ה
Mr. Selib was a true pioneer. Though never having had the fortune of a
true Torah education, he recognized, after much deliberation, that the
only way to ensure the continuity of our people is through true Torah
education; undiluted in its rigor, integrity and dedication. In his
retirement years he actively pursued study, both at Kollel classes and at
the Evergreen program at Boston University. At Boston University, he
met Professor Marvin Fox ע”ה. Mesmerized by Prof. Fox’s clarity of
thought, his singular ability to convey the rich teachings of Torah and
his relentless, rigorous dedication to the Boston Kollel; Mr. Selib
magnanimously endowed a fund at the CJP to support two Torah
scholars to study Torah in Professor Fox’s memory. We all miss Eddie’s
warmth, candor, sensitivity and dedication, and his unquenchable
drive for truth and knowledge.
In his lifetime he established a paradigm of support for Torah
institutions; may this legacy be a source of much blessing to his
departed soul.
