MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH KOLLEL
RABBI NAFTOLY BIER
LOOKING AHEAD
To say the least, we experienced a most unusual year that affected every
person. We also witnessed those who genuinely dedicated themselves to enable
all to gain their health, to continue education and to stay afloat economically.
But we have האמו. We had a chance to define ourselves by the singular bond
that Hashem has for every one of us. Not being able to define ourselves by the
medium of competition, comparison, fame, and validation from others; we
turned inwardly and recognized with clarity that we are here in this world
because the ו של עולם רבוwants us here. We were validated by knowing,
appreciating, and recognizing that we are never alone, for Hashem created
each one of us to do something unique for His world. Yes, we are beloved by
Him, all dear to Him, all necessary to make His world complete.
We were given an opportunity to appreciate our dear parents, spouses and
children, due to our being together in isolation. We have learned to appreciate
how הקדוש ברוך הואgifted each one of us with our dear families, focusing on
the positive.
It was a time of introspection. We had more time to evaluate our living
experience, our goals and aspirations, our sense of self, our accomplishments
and failures. Are we using the talents that Hashem gave us; can we do more,
more for myself, my family, for Klal Yisroel?
Klal Yisroel's survival is the biggest miracle of history, as testified both by for
example Rav Yaakov Emden זצ"לand להבדילby the philosopher, Pascal.
3
Our survival is not dependent on material wealth, land, or physical strength,
nor on intellectual wisdom or philosophy but rather on the greatest gift, the
Torah.
The Torah is a metaphysical, spiritual gift endowed to us by our Creator. It
transcends all that is natural; therefore, its guardians, we supersede all the
natural laws of history.
Being that the Torah is an anomaly to natural intellectual pursuits, for it's only
understood as a constant gift from Hashem, so too its impact on developing the
character of a Jew is beyond the normal laws of nature.
For more than three decades, the Kollel has brought the lifeline of our people,
the reason for our eternal existence to our beloved community with passion,
dedication, and love to all. Being that it is metaphysical, its impact is
immeasurable, it's shaping the lives of thousands incalculable. Today we
celebrate the embracing of dedication to Torah and Torah values by countless
thousands.
We thank all our partners and supporters in this valiant, vital work of supreme
importance to enable the continuity of the Jewish people in its true,
unadulterated form.
From Massachusetts to Oregon, from Florida to California, from Baltimore to
Denver, from Detroit to Dallas, from Eretz Yisroel to South Africa, there is
wonderful inspiring growth as a consequence of the Kollel.
Yes, it's been a most difficult year. We have been in גלותnow for almost two
thousand years. We have survived for our values, which are disseminated by
the Torah are eternal, genuine, proven, incontrovertible, absolute, decisive,
edifying, and invigorating.
As we celebrate Hashem's beneficence in allowing us to promulgate His Torah,
to affect the lives of thousands directly and indirectly, we can analyze the world
from a different angle. Yes, the times are uncertain, but Hashem wants us to
eternalize His gift of Torah, to enable all to participate in His treasure.
Through our dedication to Torah study and its dissemination, we are creating
a metaphysical dimension of transcendence from what is around us. In a year of
negativity we can focus on the positive, and create positivity.
Let us pray that we merit the advent of the time when all of the world will
embrace Hashem and His Torah.

MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH KOLLEL:
RABBI ZALMAN LEFF
We are presently living in unprecedented times. There is no one throughout
our universe who has not been affected adversely because of the coronavirus.
Death, sickness, loss of livelihood, stress, and the inability to conduct ourselves
to travel and interact freely are just some of the calamities that this virus has
brought about. Unfortunately, we don't have prophets to understand the
message of Hashem why this is happening, but it is clear that it warrants
personal introspection into our daily lives for improvement.
The Yerushalmi tells us that Hashem sometimes overlooks the cardinal sins
of incest, idolatry, and murder, but does not overlook the sin of not studying
Torah. Rabbi Simcha Zissel of Kelm explains that without Torah study, we are
spiritually compromised and are susceptible to misfortune, G-d forbid. Let us
rededicate ourselves and our families to the study of Torah and support of
Torah institutions to merit Hashem's Divine Intervention.
Boruch Hashem the learning at the Kollel continues even in these difficult
times. Due to your kind support, the Kollel Rabbis are thriving in their
personal learning and teaching to others. I thank you for your generosity and
encourage you to involve yourself with one of our Zoom classes or phone
chavrusas. Please email me at the Kollel.
May Hashem have mercy on Klal Yisroel and we should share simchos in
good health together.

In memory of
HARAV NACHUM EISENSTEIN זצ"ל
In his seven years as Rosh Kollel, he inspired the community
with his selfless devotion to each and every individual,
caring for them as if they were his only friend. With
sensitivity, warmth, humility, compassion and an acute
understanding of every person, he inspired many to strive
and attain more spiritual lives.
With profound sensitivity and dedication Rav Nachum z”l
enabled the Kollel yungeleit to reach their potential,
exhorting each and every person to develop their unique
abilities.
A Talmid Chochom of great stature, he served as a sensitive
“posek”, taking into account the personal needs of every
individual.
Though it is close to twenty years since he left Boston, the
indelible impression he made on us all is an elevating and
wonderful memory.

In tribute to the memory of
RABBI SHRAGA FEIVEL COHEN Z"L
הרב שרגא פייוול כהן ז"ל
MRS. RUTH COHEN ע”ה
יא רחל בת יעקב צבי ע"המרת מע
Rabbi Shraga Feivel Cohen was one of those rare individuals who was
so devoted to Torah as a Talmid Chochom, a Melamed Torah, that in the
eyes of those who knew him, he came to personify Ahavas Torah.
Born in 1924 on the Lower East Side of New York, Reb Feivel attended
Yeshiva Rabbi Jacob Joseph and graduated from Mesivta Torah Vodaath.
He attended the first class of the Telshe Yeshiva and spent eight years
learning in Ner Yisroel in Baltimore, where he received Smicha from Harav
Hagaon R’ Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman zt”l. Rabbi Cohen then became a
Mashgiach at the Talmudic Academy in Baltimore and later continued in
Torah education as a Rebbe at RJJ for fifteen years.
After entering the business world, he relocated his family to Brookline,
Massachusetts, where he founded a successful insurance agency and was
active in communal affairs.
He and his wife Ruth raised four children. His two sons, Rabbi Zev and
Moshe, attended the Mesivta of Long Beach High School. Zev continued
in the Bais Medrash until he went to Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood,
where he spent eight years in Torah study and growth. With his wife
Michal and family, he moved to Chicago as a founding member of the
Chicago Community Kollel. He spent seven years there, and is now the Rav
of Congregation Adas Yeschurun in that community.
Moshe not only assumed responsibility for his father’s insurance agency
after Reb Feivel’s passing, but also is perpetuating his father’s dedication to
Torah as an active member of the Board of Directors of the Kollel of
Greater Boston.
Reb Feivel’s daughter Elaine also continues in her father’s ways, and is
both a true friend of the Kollel and active in her community. His youngest
daughter Judy, whose amazing strides and accomplishments in life brought
him much nachas, lives in Manhattan.
9
Rabbi Cohen, whose many responsibilities made great demands on his
day, always found the time to do a mitzvah or an act of chesed. People did
not have to ask him for favors. He had great intuition and he anticipated
needs. He truly gave of himself and never wanted or expected anything in
return.
Mrs. Cohen was woman of regality who conveyed generosity and caring
to all. A warm, caring and dedicated friend to all, she leaves behind a
wonderful family who follow in her footsteps. Her kindness and warmth are
a treasured remembrance to all.
Reb Feivel and his wife opened their hearts to all those who entered
their home. Their home was also open to people staying in Boston for
medical care. They showed their warmth not only to the sick, but to their
families as well. They cared for all their needs, whether it meant giving
their car, shopping, sending a meal to the hospital, or spending hours
talking to and consoling people in despair.
Today, Rabbi Shraga Feivel Cohen's memory is perpetuated by the
Kollel that carries his name. The sound of Torah that reverberates in the
Bais Medrash and the spirit of Torah that permeates the community are
ensuring the vitality and vibrancy of Boston's Jewish community. Our
sages taught, "Tzaddikim are greater in their death than in their lifetime."
The unwavering and beautiful that Reb Feivel didn't live to see became a
reality due largely to his sudden death. Though we all sorely miss him, we
take comfort in the eternal Torah learned at the Kollel, which actualizes his
biggest desire: a true and beautiful Makom Torah in Boston.
Reb Feivel lives on in the family that carries his work and ideals, and in
the Kollel that nears his name.
An equal partner in her dear husband, Phil's, aspirations and dedication
to Klal Yisroel, Ruth Cohen took much pride and everlasting interest in the
development of the Kollel of Greater Boston.

IN MEMORY OF MY DEAR UNCLE, RAV YUDEL DOWEK, Z”L
By Chaim Naftali Dovek
Rabbi Yehuda Zev Dowek, or “Reb Yudel”, as he was commonly known,
was born in 1927 in the town of Poltusk, Poland, to his parents Avraham
and Esther Leah. They were G-d fearing people with tremendous mesirus
nefesh for Yiddishkeit. Their home was permeated with a love of Torah and
mitzvos.
In 1939, when the Nazis ym”s invaded Poland, the family fled to Bialystok,
Russia. One night when their mother was not home, they were rounded up
by the Russians, packed into freight trains and shipped off to Siberia, never
to see their mother again.
In 1941, the Polish citizens were granted freedom and they settled in
Kazakhstan, along with many other refugees. It was there that their father,
who would give his own food to his children, contracted dysentery and
passed away. Rav Yudel and his 3 siblings were now complete orphans.
When the war finally ended, with the help and encouragement of his
brother-in-law Rav Shlomo Margolis, z”l, Rav Yudel and his brother Reb
Ela traveled to Manchester, England to learn in the Yeshiva of Rav Yehuda
Zev Segal, zt”l. Although missing many crucial years of learning due to the
war and the adjustment of Yeshiva life not being easy, with special siyata
D’shmaya combined with diligence and determination, he began to see
progress in his learning and he eventually grew and matured into a Ben
Torah. Subsequently, he joined his sisters in America and enrolled in
Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and eventually continued on to Bais Medrash Elyon
under the guidance of Rav Reuvein Grozovsky. It was there that he learned
shechita in addition to the regular Yeshiva sedorim, and as an orphan with
no one to support him, he used this skill to earn a livelihood.
In 1956 he married his eishes chayil Chana Dear, who was one of the early
students of Bais Yaakov in Williamsburg, NY. They settled in Boston,
living near his sisters Rebbetzin Chava Margolis and Mrs. Ruth Plotnik.
At that time, there was only a handful of Bnei Torah, but his mind was set
on upholding the Degel of a Ben Yeshiva, although unpopular.
He worked at the local shlacht hoiz, and the Bostoner Rebbe zt”l would
11
only eat from his shechita. In addition, he was careful to drink only chalav
Yisroel and he would travel to NY every few weeks to bring back milk. He
would also go with the Rebbe to a farm to supervise the milking process in
order to have chalav Yisroel.
Their home was always open to numerous orchim who were in Boston,
especially college students and those who had come for medical treatments
in local hospitals, and they were cared for like family.
When his brother Reb Ela Dovek opened the Israel Book Shop, he helped
him for many years devoting all his energies to ensuring its efficiency and
he took great pride in its success. During all the years he worked, Rav
Yudel was kove’ah itim, spending most of his spare time learning.
He would give a Gemara shiur on Shabbos afternoon in Chai Odom, as well
as being the Baal Shacharis and Baal Tokeah for the Yamim Noraim.
In 1998 when the idea of a kollel was conceived, he was quick and eager to
enlist as one of the founders and dedicated time, money, and effort to help
in its establishment. He relentlessly pursued his vision of transforming
Boston into a true Makom Torah.
Upon reaching retirement age, he and his wife relocated to Lakewood, NJ
where he transformed into a “Yeshiva Bochur” once again. He arranged
many chavrusos and took upon himself to daven k’vasikin which he did
almost until the end of his life.
After his wife’s petirah, he was understandably heartbroken. But instead of
wallowing in his pain, he learned to cook and run a home in order to
remain independent. He did his own shopping and even hosted company
without any assistance until various health issues began taking their toll.
His soul returned to the Creator on the 20th of Elul 5780, and although he
is no longer with us, his legacy lives on reflected in his beautiful family of
children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and in the beautiful
edifice of Torah that we have today in the heart of our city, the Boston
Kollel.

In memory of
MR. EDWARD H. SELIB ע”ה
Mr. Selib was a true pioneer. Though never having had the
fortune of a true Torah education, he recognized, after much
deliberation, that the only way to ensure the continuity of
our people is through true Torah education; undiluted in its
rigor, integrity and dedication. In his retirement years he
actively pursued study, both at Kollel classes and at the
Evergreen program at Boston University. At Boston
University, he met Professor Marvin Fox ע”ה. Mesmerized
by Prof. Fox’s clarity of thought, his singular ability to
convey the rich teachings of Torah and his relentless,
rigorous dedication to the Boston Kollel;
Mr. Selib magnanimously endowed a fund
at the CJP to support two Torah scholars to study
Torah in Professor Fox’s memory.
We all miss Eddie’s warmth, candor, sensitivity
and dedication, and his unquenchable
drive for truth and knowledge.
In his lifetime he established a paradigm of support for
Torah institutions; may this legacy be a source of much
blessing to his departed soul.
