Dina Abrahim
Dear Dina,
Your full name, Dina Esther, is remarkable: We could render
it: “hidden justice.” But there’s more to it than that. The name
Dina is really a feminine form of the word for judgment, justice.
This calls to mind the striking concept that, in the Torah, din
itself is associated with the feminine. Chessed, the counterpart to
din, is masculine. So, while chessed wants to give and to give, din
responds: there is a limit. Chessed is the initial spark of creativity.
The possibilities are boundless. Din responds: decide what you
will be; you can’t be everything. If you try to be/do everything,
you will be/do nothing. The process of actualizing potential
means making tough decisions. Those decisions kill all options
save one. Din is commitment, relationship. Being in a relation-
ship means that I can’t do everything that I want. I must take into account the other in the
relationship. Din means: “no freebies.” You get what you deserve, what you earn. At first
glance, din may seem harsh. But if you think about it, din gives us the opportunity to earn our
keep, to stand on our own two feet, to be responsible for who we are. Isn’t that the purpose of
our existence?
When is “justice” hidden? In many ways. But, when reflecting on your name, what I think
of is how the Shechina, the Divine attribute that is din, runs things in the background,
without drawing attention. It’s like, in order for the household to run, you need laundry. From
the perspective of kids, there’s a magical supply of socks that just appear in their drawers.
What they don’t know is that someone (a.k.a. Mom) behind the scenes is putting in a
tremendous amount of work, in order to make things happen. Hashem does this constantly
on a massive scale. Like how He maintains this solar-powered planet of ours with the delicate
balance of our impossibly complex ecosystem. He does it with grace and without fanfare.
Dina, you are highly intelligent (calculus comes to mind) and at the same time, you are
extremely practical. You are strongly independent, and you are strongly focused on helping
others. You get things done, from start to finish, putting in tremendous work and thought,
and you do so in a quiet way, in a way that others may not necessarily realize or appreciate.
My bracha to you is this: may you continue on, to fully actualize this powerful gift that you
have of “hidden justice,” to benefit your loved ones, your community, the Jewish people and
the whole world.
Mazel tov on your graduation!
Stay in touch!

Rivky Bursztyn
Dear Rivky,
Our senior year would have been so
different without you. You add so much
to our class. Every Tuesday you
reminded us all to smile, which made our
day a little brighter. Your energy is
contagious, no matter how tired we may
be. It’s hard to believe that we’ve only
known you for one year. Your fun and
energy always brightens things up, and
we can always depend on you to put a smile on our faces. In
class, you ask questions that make all of us think. You have
so much love for everyone, no matter who they are or
where they come from. You go out of your way to make
sure that everyone is included and that everyone is having
a good time. You’re always willing to take on something new
to help others, and you give everything your all. We are so
happy you joined our class. We can’t imagine what our year
would have looked like without you.
Love,
The Seniors
Chaya Leah Cohen
Dear Chaya Leah,
When you picked up your
belongings the other night, my first
thought was that it did not seem
that it was three plus years ago
that you came into our home as our
boarding daughter. Lately, I began
to think that it was more daughter
and less boarder. The room is empty, and I miss you
already. Chaya Leah, you have blossomed during
these years in so many ways. You are multi-talented
and multi-dimensional. Even more important than
seeing you utilize and develop your talents in art
and music is how you have used your talents to help
others, as in Production. You are a thinker who has
also grown in your thinking not only from the
books you love to read, but from your learning and
the role models that you have met. And you are a
searcher who is looking to find your own role in
our world and actualize your potential. Hopefully
on your journey you will make many stops in your
high school home.
Love, Mrs. Gibber
Chayala Finkelstein
Dear Chayala,
The Mishna in Pirkei Avos tells us: “He (Rabban Yochanan
Ben Zakai) told his student: ‘Go out and see what the best
path is to follow.’ Rabbi Eliezer said: ‘Look kindly upon what
another person has.’ Rabbi Yehoshua said: ‘Be a good friend.’
Rabbi Yosi said: ‘Be a good neighbor.’ Rabbi Shimon said: ‘Be
sure you understand the consequences of your actions.’ Rabbi
Elazar said: ‘Have a good heart.’ He (Rabban Yochanan Ben
Zakkai) said to them: ‘The words of Rabbi Elazar are the most
correct, because everything else you have mentioned is
included in having a good heart.’”
Chayala is a girl with a good heart. She deeply cares about her friends, her teachers and the
community around her. She is sensitive to others’ feelings and needs. She is loyal and
dedicated to her family, especially her sister Dassi, and her school.
Chayala has been my student and chessed girl since she joined the school in ninth grade. She
is responsible and sweet. Her calm and thoughtful nature and personality make her
someone with whom people want to become close. She thinks about what she wants to
accomplish and she works hard to accomplish it.
Chayala is also a mevakesh, a seeker. She is always asking and wanting to know what the
Torah is requiring her to do. She is not afraid to ask questions and will continue to ask until
she understands fully what she is supposed to do and why. And when there is no answer to
the why, she has learned that is okay as well. She is a baalas aliyah, learning and growing on a
Torah path.
I wish her continued growth and hatzlacha on the special path that she has begun here at
NEAT, as well as lots of fun and success in seminary.
We will miss Chayala greatly and hope to hear from her often.
Love, Mrs. Purec
Bina Leah Haldorsen
Dear Bina Leah
When I think of Bina Leah, I think of the possuk in Tehillim
that states, “Kol k'vudah bas melech p'nimah.” Bina Leah
carries herself in a quiet and dignified manner. She has an
innate sense of tznius. She is refined in her dress, her
speech, and her behavior.
Bina Leah is respec'ul and though'ul in her dealings with
others. She has a warm personality which she displays in
her various rela(onships. She is a devoted and sincere
friend, and acts with reverence towards adults. Addi(onally,
her caring personality comes to the fore when she lovingly cares for young children.
Bina Leah is a reliable ba'alas chesed. She happily agrees and o)en offers to help others
in a myriad of ways. She responsibly sees the chesed through to the end.
Bina Leah faces adversity with emunah and strength. She turns to Hashem in tefillah
and bravely faces her fears. Bina Leah strikes a good balance between having self-
confidence and seeking hadrachah. It has been truly inspiring to watch Bina Leah grow
through the challenges Hashem has placed before her.
For fear that one may get the impression that Bina Leah is a serious, no-nonsense kind
of girl, I will tell you that Bina Leah knows how to have fun, and she makes sure that
others have fun, too. On many occasions, she has used her photography talent to create
entertaining and inspiring slideshows. Addi(onally, Bina Leah (and Bri/ney) crea(vely
led G.O. this year, and everyone had a party!
Bina Leah, you should con(nue to develop the many talents and beau(ful middos with
which Hashem has blessed you. May you con(nue to grow and bring nachas to Hashem,
your family, and all of us at NEAT.
Love,
Mrs. Karp
Sara Liba Jacob
Dear Sara Liba,
Your first name, “Sara,” is usually translated as “princess.” But really,
it is the feminine word for officer, or “one who’s in charge.” I’ll get
back to that in a minute. But first let’s switch to discuss your second
name. The name “Liba” is related to the word לב, heart. The heart is
much more than the muscle that pumps blood. Everybody knows that
the heart is where the emotions are. The name Liba is also related to
one of the Hebrew words for lion: ( לביאsame letters as )ליבא. That
name for lion relates to the word לב, heart. What’s the connection?
Is a lion, like, emotional? Actually, in Torah, the idea of “heart” is
more than your emotions. In Torah, your heart is your center. It’s
where the emotions and the mind meet. It’s your “you.” So, a lion is
not only powerful, it’s noble. It radiates that power. It is what it is,
and it knows it, and that is why it is the “King of Beasts,” in charge. If you’re in charge of yourself, then
you can lead others.
Getting back to your first name, Sara Imainu’s original name was “Sarai,” which means more like “my
princess.” Then Hashem changed her name to "Sara,” just “princess.” Why’s that better? What’s the
difference? I didn’t see the following idea anywhere, but I’d suggest this: Sara’s name changed; she was
no longer a possession, no longer anybody’s personal “princess. She was in charge in a different way.
And we find that she reached a higher level of ru’ach hakodesh than even Avraham Avinu, her husband.
At one point, Hashem said to Avraham: “Whatever Sara says, do that.” Now, obviously, Sara Imeinu
wasn’t going about, ordering Avraham Avinu around. But in a certain way, she was in charge. When a
person is in charge of themselves, they are nobody’s “property.” Self-mastery is real mastery. The
most important one to be in charge of is ourselves.
Sara Liba, you are sweet and giving, and I have seen in you a significant depth of thought and emotion.
Something that you may not necessarily realize is that you have a certain poise, a certain way of
carrying yourself that communicates dignity, nobility. Deep within you, you have the nobility of the
lion. You have the core power of self-mastery. My bracha to you is that you should develop this gift to
fully actualize your self-awareness and self-mastery; radiate confidence and positivity; and be a source
of light to the lives of all who are privileged to know you.
Mazel tov on your graduation!
Keep in touch, Sara Liba.

Brittney Kushner
Dear Brittney
Brittney Simcha Kushner, with your first waltz into NEAT in ninth
grade the school has been a livelier, happier place. Your name is a
perfect description for you. כשמה כן היא. Full of smile and good
cheer, your enthusiasm is contagious. You seem to be in so many
places at once, leading G.O. activities, taking a huge role in the annu-
al Production each year, doing chessed or building a kesher with lo-
cal families. It is a marvel how you somehow find the time for school
work!
Your midah of simcha comes out even in your more serious side. You
take great pride in remembering what you had learned weeks, months and even years before. You
are an enthusiastic bat aliyah, constantly looking to apply your classes to real life. It is enjoyable to
watch your excitement when you discover a connection between topics you are learning in different
classes.
Despite being surrounded with friends, I have watched you go beyond your comfort zone to befriend
girls from different grades and backgrounds. With your sparkling smile and positive outlook, you try
to make every girl around you a friend.
You have snuck your way into the hearts of many Providence families, as you have given so much of
yourself to others. With the attention and care you give to the PHDS kids both in and out of school,
you have made them feel like a million dollars. You take notice of everyone and have a kind word and
a beautiful smile for each person. It is not surprising that the girls in elementary school fight over
who is your best friend, each girl claiming the title for themselves!
When you look back at your years in NEAT and think about all you have gained from your time here,
recognize that the community has also gained so much from you. Although NEAT will not be the
same without you, we are confident that you will take your wonderful traits and continue to bring joy
and happiness wherever life may take you. We hope you will keep in touch with those of us you left
behind and visit us every once in a while, bringing back your simcha and exuberance.
Love, Mrs. Bielory
Avigayil Lapin
Dear Avigayil,
Sometimes being in proximity with
someone has an effect on a person’s
mood or state of mind. When you
have been in class, Avigayil, it has
had a calming effect on me. You
possess the rare amalgam of two
midos that seem initially opposing -
menuchas hanefesh and spirit. I
think of the saying, “Still waters run deep.” You
present yourself as the true bas melech who possesses
internality and dignity in all situations. You are down-
to-earth and practical, but at the same time you are a
deep thinker. Both in class and socially, you are
engaging and friendly and fun, but your presence is
felt. You can speak your mind and stand up for your
balanced values with a determined hakpadah on
doing things right. You are always sensible and real,
but, nevertheless, simultaneously sensitive and
idealistic. Is it called balance, the shvil hazahav? Or
is its name Avigayil. I will certainly miss you.
Love, Mrs. Gibber
Chavi Saklad
Dear Chavi,
I think it is your friendly and warm
smile that you offer to those you meet
that is the window to your soul. It opens
up the recipient to your positivity, your
warmth, the eagerness and enthusiasm
with which you approach life and its
challenges. It is outward focused and
embracing. On a deeper level, it also reflects your
openness for new connections and new experiences, and
your deep desire to accept and grow. It is also the window
into your heart, from which friendship and chesed flows.
I have known you for many years, first as the friendly
young girl who accompanied her mother to shul regularly
and sat so quietly, absorbing. That girl is still a regular in
shul. For the past few years, I have known you in class. I
will really miss your energy and questions. You are
inquisitive, but more importantly you are receptive, and
you are always willing to accept daas Torah. You know that
I will miss you.
Love, Mrs. Gibber
Cheli Schochet
Dear Cheli,
I cannot imagine my classes without
your questions and comments. Always
stimulating, often insightful, just
sometimes from left-field, they are
always interesting and thought -
provoking. But what I will really miss is
the young woman who asks the ques-
tions and makes the comments – with
passion, excitement and a true yearning
to know and to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. And
of course your special smile. It is a pleasure to watch you in
class because you are so “alive” to learning and growing. I
have observed both in class and out of class that you are
devoted, caring and sensitive, and these midos are apparent
when you relate to family, friends and acquaintances. You
bring the same zest and energy to your after-school efforts
as well, and you make delicious meat roll and chocolate chip
cookies. My question, is when do you sleep? How do you
arrive in shul so early on Shabbos morning? There are two
of you - the deep Cheli and the very practical Cheli. This is a
winning combination!
Love, Mrs. Gibber
Shoshana Spitz
Dear Shosh,
Your two names, Shoshana and Rivka, are more
connected than you may realize. Rivka Imainu, the mother
of our na(on, the wife of Yitzchok Avinu, is described by
the Midrash with the passuk: “ כשושנה בין החוחים- like a
rose among the thornbushes.” This refers to Rivka
Imainu’s growing up in an environment steeped in
idol-worship, and nevertheless, remaining strong and
pure. Her emunah, faith, gave her strength.
Some(mes, people think that emunah is for the weak. But
the truth is that emunah is a powerful source of strength. With it, a person can over-
come incredible challenges. This made me think of you, Shosh. You are strong and
you are pure. You may not realize it, because you are modest and humble. You may
also challenge what I’m saying, because you are very aware that you are not super-
human. Nevertheless, what I am saying about you is true: Like רבקה אמינו השושנה,
you are strong, and you are pure. I am totally serious when I say that you are an
inspira(on to me.
Shosh, you now stand on the edge of a new beginning. My bracha to you is this:
may you have emunah in yourself. I can almost hear you responding: “Now, wait a
second, Rabbi Lapin: emunah in myself? I can’t even li) a finger without help from
Hashem!” You’re right. We can’t do anything without Hashem, but Hashem doesn’t
just help you; He helps you by giving you the כחto succeed. Shosh, believe that
Hashem gives you the כחto succeed! Daven, not only that Hashem give you כח,
daven that Hashem give you the clarity to see that you are strong! You are stronger
than you believe. Believe in yourself, Shosh! Hashem will give you the !כח
( כי הוא הנותן לך כח!“ )דברים ח,“וזכרת את ה' אלוקיך
Mazel tov on your gradua(on!
Keep in touch – really!

Elka Taitelbaum
Dear Elka,
I am definitely missing our Thursday
nights when I have been the recipient of
your help, with the bonus that I get to
speak to you. From these Thursday nights I
have learned about your essential nature.
You are a true baalas chesed who operates
behind the scenes without fanfare or recognition, with
commitment and caring.Your many responsibilities during
Production were not always discernible to the viewer, but so
integral to the finished product. You are an enabler, self-
contained and reliable, very capable and efficient. You look at a
situation and determine with intelligence what that challenge
requires. And then you just do it.You are devoted to family,
friends and the community and it displays itself in many ways,
whether Mishmeres and studying with friends, or Bnos and
helping your family. You have taken ownership of the mission
that the Nefesh Hachaim calls the purpose of man: להועיל
אחריני. I am sure that you will carry this mission with you in the
future.

PROVIDENCE HEBREW DAY SCHOOL/
NEW ENGLAND ACADEMY OF TORAH
remembers its dear friends and lifelong supporters
Mr. Israel Yitzchak and Mrs. Ida Pearlman, a”h
Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Miriam Pearlman, a”h
Mr. Joshua Pearlman, a”h
Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Miriam Pearlman dedicated their lives to the support and well-being of the
school. Due to his business acumen, Mr. Pearlman fostered relationships with many donors who have
helped the school, though none could match his family’s unwavering financial support. Mrs. Pearlman
demonstrated selfless dedication to the support of the day school as she stood by her husband’s side,
and her hachnossas orchim was legendary.
Through the Pearlmans’ tireless efforts, institutions such as Providence Hebrew Day School/New
England Academy of Torah, New England Rabbinical College, and Providence Community Kollel
flourish today, and our Orthodox community is a model of excellence.
Mr. and Mrs. Pearlman were blessed with remarkable role models who inspired them to serve the Torah
community with dedication and love. We remember Mr. Israel Yitzchak Pearlman and Mrs. Ida
Pearlman, Tom’s parents, who always taught that anything in life that is worth having is worth fighting
for, and that success in life comes to those who are persistent. Israel Pearlman was known as a stern and
strict father, who could never be accused of being too permissive; however, their eleven children, Mrs. Alice
Mandel, Mrs. Anna Shabshelowitz, Mrs. Lila Delman*, Mrs. Adelle Curhan, Mrs. Elaine Baron*,
Mrs. Caroline Leighton, Mr. Benjamin Pearlman, Alan Pearlman, Esq., Thomas W. Pearlman, Esq.*, Marcus
J. Pearlman, Esq., and Mr. Leonard D. Pearlman, feel that his strictness and sternness only served to bring
out their inner strength of character, and for this they are forever grateful.
Mr. Israel Pearlman’s strength showed itself in his feelings toward the Day School, where even in the most
challenging times he stood as a tower of fortitude, encouraging his son, Tom, and his other children not to
shirk responsibility, to be strong, to do what they believed was best and to act as they thought was right. He
was continually impressed by the strength of character that the Day School implanted in its children, and
the religious and moral commitment that it imparted to its students. He often spoke to people about the
importance of a day school education and encouraged them to send their children to the school.
We also remember Mr. Joshua Pearlman, Tom and Miriam’s son, who filled his life with dedication and love
for family and Torah. It was his love for life, his goals, and his work that made his battle with illness so
courageous and dignified.
The Providence Jewish community will be forever grateful to the Pearlman family.
