On Friday, March 13, we were informed of the decision that the school would be closing. In the busy days leading up to Pesach,
with so much uncertainty, the school administration jumped into action, preparing and distributing packets, scheduling and
planning conference calls, figuring out how things might work with insufficient phone lines, inadequate (or no) internet and not
enough computers. Parents, many of us teachers or essential workers, had the impossible task of becoming home educators and
trying to maintain everyone’s sanity. Little did we know that five months later, many of us would still be at home.
From the outset, in my role as technology advisor to the school, I advocated for a Chromebook-based solu#on, for my goal was
not only to meet the need of the day, but also establish a safe, sustainable pla orm for educa#onal technology in years to come,
all on a shoestring budget (a challenge amid na#onwide shortages). Working together with my business partner, Mr. Muataz Al
Mu2i, a true expert in K-12 internet safety and security, we built a prototype of a Chromebook-based solu#on, designed for safe
use even outside of the school network.
Some schools made the straightforward decision to stick to using phone calling or kosher Zoom devices. Others made the
decision to compromise on safety and security to minimize downtime, depending on the supervision of already overburdened
parents. Because of the Providence Hebrew Day School’s commitment to providing excellence in both Torah and General
Studies without compromise to our values, neither of these options was suitable.
Under the wise leadership of Rabbi Peretz Scheinerman, together with Mr. Pinny Berlin and Mr. Robert Schloss, we agreed on a
plan and obtained a psak to move forward.
I am grateful for having the opportunity to work with Rabbi Yehuda Leib Brown, who was deeply involved from the beginning
with planning, tes#ng, deployment, end-user support, and professional development. He is a true anav and eved HaShem. Rabbi
and Mrs. Brown must be the most valuable u#lity players in the field of Jewish educa#on.
I would like to acknowledge Mrs. Miriam Esther Weiner for her incredible work coordina#ng early remote learning programs;
Rabbi Aharon Lapin, for his help developing and tes#ng our internet safety policies; and my step-daughter, Morah Blimi, who
helped manage our remote learning portal. I am likewise grateful to those who financially supported these ini#a#ves and those
who generously donated to the successful matching campaign and the Amudim Dinner.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to support the children of Providence Hebrew Day School. While we enter the new school
year with continued uncertainty, I am confident that the efforts invested by all, iy”H, make for a far more successful year. This
was a true team effort, and I applaud the efforts of everyone involved.
I accept the honor of Volunteer of the Year on behalf of the extended PHDS Technology Team and in the merit of my role
models in chesed:
Rachmona litzlan, we lost many people close to us over the past months. My mentor of 28 years, R' Betzalel Reuven ben
Yehoshua Bertram, z”l, referred to himself as a simple egg man. He was a successful businessman, who was up before dawn to
daven and learn, treated everyone with dignity, raised his children to be mench’n with uncompromising Torah values, and
opened his doors to make my dear friends and me feel like part of his family. May his memory be a blessing and may he merit
from the goodness that he inspired in all who were close to him.
In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man. My father, Yeshaya ben Yechiel, a”h, exemplified this value. He acted with
honesty, integrity and respect, and always put his children first. When a friend or family member or the local rov needed help, he
was the first to be there. May his neshama con#nue to have an aliya, and may he con#nue to benefit from the good deeds of his
children and grandchildren.
In the Russian Jewish community, my mother, Myrna Winter, is famous for her chesed. For 30 years, I have heard countless sto-
ries of how my mother helped families arriving with nothing, giving them dignity and ensuring that every need was met. She
founded a kosher food pantry, distributed packages for Pesach, was responsible for countless bris’n, bar mitzvahs and chasunas,
and the chesed shel emes, ensuring a kosher burial, o8en with no funds available and o8en circumven#ng crema#on. She re#red
from her official role last month. May HKB”H bless her with a long, healthy life, nachas from her children, and con#nued
opportuni#es to do good in this world.
Acharon, acharon chaviv. I am grateful to my wife, Es and all of our children, for bringing peace to my life and making my house
into a home. Es , we are a team in every respect, and any honor I receive is only in your merit.
May HKB”H bring us all a refuah and a yeshua, and as we, iy”H, return to a semblance of normalcy, may it not be the old normal,
but rather an opportunity to appreciate our lives in a new way and connect with HaShem on a level that we could not have
previously imagined.
Thank you.

PHDS NEAT Nechama Liba
14 years ago (almost 15!), Hashem decided the world, our community, and our
family could no longer exist without you.
And you do like to add a different flair to everything!
Most people have 1 secular birthday and 1 Hebrew birthday, but you contrived to
arrive during bein hashmashos, so that you could claim 2 Hebrew birthdays!
Most people answer to their first names. Some prefer their middle names. Or
their first and middle names together. Some people go by a nickname. You’ve
played around with just about all of those, even going by Jelly the year you were
2. Many people currently call you NeLi, a composite of your first and middle names.
(Except Mrs. Uyttebroek.)
Most little kids respond to “got your nose” by asking for it back. You took one look
at your brother’s hand and said, “That’s not my nose, that’s t!” And yes, he was
holding his hand in the shape of a sign language (finger-spelled) t.
Most people don’t get to be the seventh child. They certainly don’t get to be the
seventh child and the middle child!
Most people do have a favorite color (purple), shape (heart) and animal
(penguins). Except, wait, our Nechama Liba “doesn’t play favorites.” That would
be too normal. Which must be why her 8th grade graduation fell during the least
normal year ever –- 2020.
NeLi, you’ve dealt extremely well with the abnormality of your 8th grade year.
Mazel tov on your graduation, and hatzlacha in NEAT. We know you’ll deal with
future adversity with grace as well, and hope that in the years to come, you’ll
