POWADA-MAHARASHTRA-

pOWADA-history

The history of powada begins in the 17th
century. But in the Yadav era, prior to Shivaji’s
anointment, the devotional songs that were
sung in Gyaneshwari were also a form of
powada. The era of Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj (1630-1680) was the golden age of
powada. The classic powada emerged in this

period. Shahiri literature originated during the
rule of Shivaji Maharaj. The first powada, Afzal
Khanacha Vadh, (the killing of Afzal Khan) was
sung by Agnidas in 1659. This powada
describes the killing of Afzal Khan by Shivaji in
stirring words and finds mention in
Maharashtra’s gazette. Another important
powada was about the capture of Singhgarh
fort by Tanaji Malsure. It was first sung by
Tulsidas. Equally important is the powada
about Baji Pasalkar sung by Yamji Bhaskar.
There were many powadas centred on Shivaji
like Shivaji Avtari Purush, Shiv Pratigya,

POWADA-origin

he powada (Marathi: पोवाडा) is a genre of
Marathi poetry that was during the late 17th
century in India. Powada, which means ‘to
glorify’, is a traditional Marathi ballad that
traces its history to more than 750 years[1]
Powadas often glorified and celebrated deeds
of popular folk figures and leaders such as

Chhatrapati Shivaji and Tanaji Malusare, and
were also written to raise awareness on social
issues such as female foeticide, dowry and
corruption. Powadas were also used as a
medium to create an awareness during
Samyukta Maharashtra movement.[1]

Powada is also a genre of poetry popular in
Uttarakhand, specifically that glorifies
warriors. It is popular in Kumaun as well as
Garhwal regions of the state and is sung,
performed or narrated on various occasions. It
is also known as "Bhada"

POWADA-significance

During the Independence struggle, powadas
became an important tool to inspire and
motivate people to drive out the British from
India. Post-Independence, it became an
instrument of people's movement.” According
to him, powada played a significant role in
1956-57 during the Samyukta

Powada-artist

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule composed a Powada
on the greatness of Shivaji Maharaj. Mahatma
Phule used powada for spreading awareness
most of the hundreds.

Architectural design

 Ajanta Caves were built from the Basalt accumulated
in the form of igneous rocks. These rocks were
accumulated due to the volcanic eruptions occurred
long back.

 The workers carved the rock with proper planning as
cracks also occurred during the process. The workers
carved pillars, roofs, and idols out of the rocks.

 The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures
described as among the finest surviving examples of
ancient India art, particularly expressive paintings
emotions through gesture, pose and form.

Features

 The Ajanta Caves constitute ancient monasteries and
worship-halls of different Buddhist traditions carved into a
75-metre wall of rock.

 The caves also present paintings depicting the past lives and
rebirths of the Buddha, pictorial tales from Aryasura's
Jatakamala, and rock-cut sculptures of Buddhist deities.

 Most of the Ajanta paintings were done in the light of
torches, as caves used to be dark from inside.

 The colours used in the paintings were made of plants and
minerals and are vivid even after 1500 years.

Materials used for construction

 Materials used for construction of the Ajanta Caves were a
rough plaster of clay, cow dung, and rice husks were pressed
on to the rough cave walls.

 This was then coated with lime paste in order to create a
smooth working surface.

Significance

 The Ajanta cave arts are a window into the culture, society
and religiosity of the native population of India between the
2nd century BCE and 5th century CE.

 While the main purpose of the caves was to celebrate the
glory of Gautama Buddha's life and achievements, they also
provide an important insight into the Buddhist life and belief
system and the reflection of its values in art.

Architectural design

 Chittorgarh Fort has been made in the shape of a large fish and its
circumference is 13 km. The fort is built on the banks of Gambhri
River and a limestone bridge has to crossed in order to enter the
fort.

 The fort was built on the basis of Hindu architecture through ideas
like vaulted substructures belong to Muslim architecture.

Features

 It is a massive hilltop fort, which is a depiction of Rajput culture
and values. The fort of Chittor is regarded as one of the most
outstanding forts of the country and is indeed the ‘Pride of
Rajasthan State’

 It is also called as the “water fort” as it has 22 water bodies in
addition to towers, palaces and temples. It houses two
commemoration towers namely “Kirti Stambh” and “Vijay Stambh”
was built to honour the first Jain Tirthankar.

Materials used for construction

 It is made of limestone, covering the Gambhiri River. The fort
covers 65 historic structures, which include four palaces, 19 large
temples, 20 water bodies, 4 memorials and a few victory towers.

Significance

 Chittorgarh Fort is said to have been the capital of the Gahlot and
Sisodia kings who ruled Mewar between the eighth and the
sixteenth century. The Fort was named after Chittrangad Maurya.
The fort was attacked three times and every time it got saved by
the daring heroism of the Rajput warriors.
