SCCF Recent Land Preservation
Before its 2020-21 fiscal year, SCCF had not had a significant increase in its preserved land
portfolio since the acquisition of the Bailey Homestead Preserve a decade ago. This past year
demonstrated that SCCF’s proud history as a land trust continues as approximately 84 acres were
donated or acquired in four significant locations.
Gretchen C. Valade Preserve Cape Coral Parcel Puschel Preserve

McGregor Acreage
Using the new Land Acquisition and Improvement Fund made
possible by a very generous anonymous donor, SCCF acquired
three parcels near the Sanibel Causeway tollbooth on McGregor
Boulevard. Totaling 25.25 acres, these parcels were important
acquisition targets because many of the adjacent lots are privately
owned and some development has already occurred. Mangrove
habitats reduce hurricane impacts and are invaluable for many
species of marine and terrestrial wildlife.

Sanibel Historical Museum and Vilage
Sanibel Historical Museum and Village was founded in 1984 with a mission to preserve and share
Sanibel history. The story of Sanibel is told from the Calusa and Spanish eras to the early pioneer
families who settled on the island in the 1800s. It tells of warriors, adventures, fishermen, farmers
and proprietors.
Nine historic buildings were moved from their original sites. Each building has been restored to its
original state. We also have a replica of a Packing House and a garage housing a 1927 Ford Model T truck.
Volunteer docents share the stories of Sanibel with almost 10,000 visitors a year. Join us as we follow the
footsteps of the past.

"Ding" Darling Wildlife Society
The "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society has established two annual photography contests. Jay
Norwood Darling, the Refuge's namesake, recognized the importance of art to convey
powerful messages about the importance of conservation and protecting our wildlife and habitats.
Wildlife and outdoor photography is a great way to educate visitors about the beauty of the
wildlife that calls the Refuge "home" in hopes to inspire future conservation
stewards. Oftentimes, visitors don't get a chance to see wildlife up-close, but
when photographers capture a beautiful photo, they create an invaluable
connection. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge offers beautiful scenery and
wildlife sighting opportunities for photographers of any level.
