For the first time in Ukraine the specialists of this school have performed the
transplantations of heart, liver, kidney and pancreas. More than 500
transplantations have been performed there.
The first domestic endoprosthesis of the knee
joint named "Motor Sich EPK-1" was developed
at the ZSMU.
For the first time in Ukraine a special method
was developed to restore the natural shapes
and functions of the jaw with the help of
individualized jaw implants made of titanium
alloys, developed according to the parameters of the patient's computed
tomography performed before the operation.
The scientists of the
pharmaceutical school
have worked out more
than 10 preparations,
namely "Tiotriazolin",
"Tiocetam", "Tiodaron",
"Levotyl", "Amiotryl",
"Indotryl" and "Karbatryl".
They are widely used now
in many countries abroad.
In June 2020 Zaporizhzhia State Medical University received a certificate of
conformity of the quality management system with the requirements of
DSTU ISO 9001:2015 (ISO 9001:2015, IDT), registered in the Registry of

The University has its own scientific editions: "Zaporozhye Medical Journal",
the scientific practical journal "Pathology" and the collection of scientific
works "Actual Problems of Medical and Pharmaceutical Science". The first
two are included to scientific service "Web of Science".
Material and technical facilities are enriched with brand new equipment
for education and scientific work. And if the prestige of the
University arises from its own training facilities, it should be noted that ZSMU
has its own Medical Educational and Scientific Center "University Clinic",
where practical classes are held and medical care is provided.
The introduction of computer technologies into the teaching and studying
process, scientific research and management is one of the priority-driven
University's activities. 62 computer classrooms and almost 2000 PCs provide
education of students with academic curricula based on multimedia
technologies and test control in the main disciplines. There is a Centre of
Telemedicine and Distance Learning at the University which provides the
participation in international scientific videoconferences, organization of
distance refresher courses for University teaching staff on the EDX and
Moodle platforms, training of Pharmaceutical Faculty students of extramu-
ral form.
Unfortunately, due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, all educa-
tional institutions in the country were forced to switch from the usual class-
room training to distance mode of education. Despite such a force
majeure situation, ZSMU was ready for a new mode of work, because dis-
tance education technologies have been used at the University for over
15 years, and since 2016 one of the priorities of educational activities has
been the introduction of the concept of distance education. Recently,
more than 600 online courses in various fields of study have been created.
In addition, the developed ma-
terial and technical facilities, in-
frastructure of computer classes
and laboratories as well as the
readiness of the teaching staff to
work with IT technologies al-
lowed to carry out such a reform
without any difficulties. During
the quarantine period from March 2020 until the end of the academic
year, an information environment was created for each discipline, which
was supported by numerous cloud services. The chosen model of educa-
tion proved its effectiveness at the end of the academic year, when non-
graduate students successfully passed the summer session, and graduate
students were good at the final exams.
In addition, the Rector of the University decided to organize the prepara-
tory stage of the distance education for foreign applicants. During the
summer holidays, the university project "Distance Learning in the Foreign
Citizens Training Center" was implemented, which aimed to acquaint
entrants, in particular Moroccans, with the University in general and the
language of instruction in particular: the target audience was offered
photos and videos with useful information, introductory mini-online course
in the Ukrainian language, which could be registered and passed by
anyone. In total, more than a thousand participants were interested in the
project page.
In summer, 2020, distance classes were held for 680 Indian students with
professors from India. Thus, students were prepared to take exams at the
Medical Council of India. Teleconferences on various aspects of medicine
are also held with colleagues from European countries.
For conducting classes remotely in ZSMU, 25 classrooms were reorganized
into online lecture-rooms, provided with the latest devices and
equipment. And starting from the 2020-2021 academic year, both dis-
tance and classroom education has been introduced.
Currently, all the departments of the University are supplied with modern
devices and equipment. The University's local computer network is con-
stantly expanding and improving.
In addition, on the basis of the ZSMU library students have access to the
database "eBook Clinical Collection" provided by EBSCO Host - a data-
base specially designed for medical universities, clinics, biomedical librar-
ies and which contains more than 2900 selected books of high profession-
al level in Medicine, Nursing, Health, and General Practice, and the USMLE
Test Database Information System from MtdIQ Learning, which allows stu-
dents to use American Test Databases to prepare for KROK, the Interna-
tional Medical Exam.
The library receives free access to the EBSCO database, Web of Science
and Scopus. Students have access to the full-text resources of the Springer
Link portal - Springer magazines (1997-2020) and Springer e-books (2017).
In total, ZSMU has at its disposal 400 portable USB-media, which contain
multimedia courses from 16 general theoretical and clinical disciplines,
prepared by specialists of the publishing house "Elsevier". At the same time,
eight separate electronic multimedia courses in various medical disciplines
have been created. At the same time, ZSMU has access to a high-quality
educational resource from the British Medical Journal - BMJ Learning,
which includes hundreds of accredited, peer-reviewed training modules
that contain text, video and audio materials.
It is worth noting
that simulation
training classes
were created and
equipped with
modern simulators
at the University
departments.
In addition, at the
end of 2018, a new
modern training
center was created
at ZSMU — the Interdepartmental Training Center — which allows to
increase the efficiency and quality of student training. This is a high-tech
center equipped with advanced equipment, modern dummies,
interactive panels, simulators and other training facilities for over
UAH 22 million, thanks to which it is possible to fully reconstruct real clinical
cases and situations in real-time. The Training center consists of several
departments that are similar to the real hospital department.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is equipped as a delivery
room. Noelle is the main dummy of the room. It is a simulator of the birth
process that reconstructs the physiological and pathological course of
events, fetus location during the birth process. There is also a realistic ab-
dominal simulator with the help of that student, who could practice Leo-
pold's maneuvers. For students training also are used phantoms for prac-
ticing clinical exami-
nation of a lacteal
gland in normal and
pathological condi-
tions, and bimanual
gynecological ex-
amination. Such a
way students learn
how to cope with
challenges that they
will meet in further
professional life.
The Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology is equipped with
mannequins for children of all ages: from infants to adolescents, designed
to practice methods of physical examination in childhood and the
reproduction of emergencies in pediatric practice. The phantoms of
children's arms and legs available in this Department are intended for
testing the technique of
measuring blood
pressure, performing
injections and catheteri-
zation of peripheral
vessels. The Neonatology
Department borders on
the Department of
Obstetrics, which creates
realistic conditions for
multidisciplinary training.
The Resuscitation Depart-
ment was made for helping
students to master skills for
emergency help It is
equipped with realistic
dummies “Stat Manikin”,
Code Blue III Adult and
Simon. They all are aimed
at checking if students
learned well the helping
procedure for basic and
extended resuscitation. It also helps them to train actions procedure for
different accidents, and learn how to make a right and urgent decision in
stressful situations. With such equipment students could build up the pulse
at the central vein, take one's arterial blood pressure, conduct virtual
monitoring of patients' organs, conduct ECG recording, conduct defibrilla-
tion and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Students could re-try and
re-practice their skills at dummies and other equipment to be prepared for
the treatment of a real patient in practice.
The Inpatient Unit Simulating Department was designed for family
physicians training. At this department hi-fidelity dummies as Susie and
Trauma Man are used. The style of the department is maximally close to
the interior of the hospital ward. The dummies can complain, breathe,
cough, sweat, and cry. With such simulators, students can learn how to
diagnose a blue skin, how to determine pupillary reaction, how to
conduct auscultation of
the heart, lungs, and
abdomen, build up the
pulse at central vein, take
one's arterial blood
pressure, conduct virtual
monitoring of patients
organs, conduct ECG
recording, and mastering
emergency aid pro-
cedure.
The Interdepartmental Training Center also includes the Emergency Medi-
cine Department. Students learn how to help injured people in extreme cir-
cumstances. Here we can see a simulator of a car in an accident. With
this simulator, further doctors train to evacuate injured people in the cor-
rect order, stop bleeding, immobilize a broken limb or spine, to anesthetize
patients and to calm relatives. The realistic environment of the room help
to prepare students for work under real circumstances.
Another advantage of
our Training Center is a
so-called 3D room that
reconstructs the
realistic atmosphere of
natural disaster,
catastrophe, tactical
operations. The room is
equipped with video
projection and audio
accompaniment that
create a sense of
presence at the epicenter of the fire, hurricane, earthquake, terrorist at-
tack and battlefield. To prepare students for a real situation we also
equipped this part of the Center with dummies with burns, gunshot
wounds, mine-blast traumas, and severed limbs.
The Functional Diagnostics Department is equipped with professional
medical machines used in real hospitals. Students work with such
equipment as ultrasound scanners Esaote MyLab 40 and CBit 8,
electroencephalograph Neurocom, Spirograph Spirolab III,
electrocardiographs Biomed BE600, combined daily ECG monitors and
device for arterial pressure monitoring Cardiosense AD. All these machines
are designed for conducting a wide range of examinations for adults and
children. We give our
students the oppor-
tunity to work with
real patients using
real medical equip-
ment. Thanks to that
they could gain
valuable clinical
experience even at
the pregraduate
stage of the study.
The Training Center is also supplied with a virtual patient simulator called
Body Interact. Body Interact can recreate a variety of scenarios from the
Clinic of Internal
Medicine, Pediat-
rics, Surgery,
Obstetrics, and
Emergency.
The technology al-
lows you to com-
municate with a
virtual patient,
perform a physical
examination or the
necessary labora-
tory and instrumental tests, establish a diagnosis and prescribe treatment,
choose the dosage of the drug based on the patient's body height and
weight. In this case, the clinical condition of the virtual patient changes
depending on the help provided. Therefore, students have a unique op-
portunity to understand the correctness of their actions and, after analyz-
ing the mistakes made, to draw conclusions for the future.
The separate departments of the Training Center are Dental Training Cen-
ter and Dental Training Class, which are equipped with modern dental
equipment and simulators.
At the Department of Anatomy and Operative Surgery, medical students
study using the Anatomage anatomical table. It is a 3D visualization sys-
tem that allows you to study in detail the human anatomy to the cellular
level.
Moreover, a specialized Training Center in Cosmetology, a Training
Pharmacy, as well as
several media centers
provide mastering
practical skills, abilities
and knowledge,
thanks to technology
based on realistic
modeling and simula-
tion of the clinical situ-
ation using modern
training equipment.
Simulation training promote professional and teamwork skills development.
The main goal of the Interdepartmental Training Center is to recreate a re-
al clinical environment and conditions for preparing students for profes-
sional routine.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, ZSMU introduced an automated control
system (ASU) of the educational process — the so-called "electronic
journal", which allowed to collect, analyze and receive online all the
information about each student.
To ensure the work of the ASU, the University has significantly updated all
the computer equipment, as each of the 61 departments has a separate
computer and other multifunctional devices for the purpose of keeping
this "electronic journal".
Since February 2017, parents have been able to find out the academic
performance of a particular student. The technical capabilities of the ASU
allowed to satisfy the request of the Student Council of ZSMU and create
another functionality in the Electronic Journal, which is used at the
University in order to monitor and analyze academic performance and
lecture attendance. Each student can view only their personal profile in
the journal.
The electronic journal operates in three languages — Ukrainian, Russian
and English, and is available at: http://asu.zsmu.zp.ua.
ZSMU actively cooperates with such international associations as
International Association for Medical Education (AMEE), Association of
Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), European Association for International
Education (EAIE), and is a member of many other international associa-
tions, e.g. European Pharmaceutical Students´ Association (EPSA),
