The City Government of Nuevo Laredo undertook the
task, by the Institute for Competitiveness and Foreign
Trade of Nuevo Laredo (ICCE) to present the “Socioeconomic Handbook of Nuevo Laredo
2017” where we proudly show the greatness of our city and underpinned its importance in
the national and international context.


This edition has the firm goal to keep encouraging the Competitiveness and Modernity
of Nuevo Laredo through information, statistics and knowledge aimed to businessmen,
investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, students and for everyone that decides to use an
efficient tool for the geographic, economic and social analysis of this thriving border and
region.


With a well-defined course between society and government, we invite you to discover the
wealth and characteristics attributes of a region willing to welcome investment, reiterating
the commitment to assist as needed to establish more and better companies in the state.


Today more than ever, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, “Most Important Logistics Platform of
Latin America”, plays a fundamental role for the development of Mexico for its strategic
geographic location and for being the border of Mexico with United States with the most
attractions in terms of logistics, infrastructure, human capital, intensive use in Information
Technologies and Telecommunications.


I would like to share with you some of the statistics that show what we represent:

• Nuevo Laredo, has the highest activity of import and export of the country, gathering an
average of 20 % of the national total V.A.T.


• 40% of the commercial exchange between Mexico and United States is performed
through Nuevo Laredo and 75% of the imports from the country.

• 14,000 trucks cross daily between import and export along with a 1,800 loaded railway
wagons.


• Nuevo Laredo represents more than 52% of the commercial exchange, measured in
customs declarations, at the customs adjoined in the border of Mexico (10 border ports)
and the State of Texas.


In this transformation to Modernity, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas has the elements to
strengthen itself as a leader city; the synergy between the Society and City Government
will allow to secure our leadership, therefore I make an open invitation that as citizens
we keep participating with proposals and making decisions that will define the course
and integral development of Nuevo Laredo for the pride of Tamaulipas and Mexico.

This Socioeconomic Handbook of Nuevo Laredo 2017 is a publication that discloses
demographic, social and economic aspects of the City of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and the
Region.


The document includes the most recent information and statistics available, produced and
validated by the departments and institutions of the public and private sectors seeking
homogeneity, interest, knowledge and easy comprehension of the available data that show
the advantages and strengths of our city in the national and international context.


This reference tool for businessmen, investors, entrepreneurs, academics, researchers,
students and society in general, without a doubt, allow us to have a greater vision to plan,
make better decisions and actions that contribute to increase our Competitiveness rate.


The cooperation and coordination with several institutions, which in a co-responsible and
regular manner provide the statistics that they generate to this Institute for Competitiveness
and Foreign Trade, made possible the elaboration of this reference tool; therefore, the ICCE

In recent years the academic, political and economic fields have taken great interest in the
study and development of the issue of Competitiveness, now considered as one of the most
solid strategies to meet the challenges and demands that the globalization imposes on the
market, particularly in International Trade.


In this important transformation that Nuevo Laredo is living, where the socioeconomic
indicators have had a historic surge in public works, economic development, social
development as well as in the transparency and management of public finance among
other actions, have encourage trust and investment.


The Modernity and Competitiveness require committed participation of every sector due
that they are central elements for development and in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas are not
the exception, currently to adopt them is not a solution, nowadays is a need in both the

The Socioeconomic Handbook of Nuevo Laredo 2017, provides to businessmen, investors,
academics and citizens in general timely, quantitative and objective information
on different commercial sectors of Nuevo Laredo; becoming a mandatory reference
document. There is no doubt that the Institute for Competitiveness and Foreign Trade
has done an excellent work, highlighting the importance of the Nuevo Laredo-Laredo
region for foreign trade within the international economic context.

140 years ago the first American consul, Thomas Gilgan arrived to Nuevo Laredo, and
since then the governments of both countries have worked to keep strengthening the
relationship. Prove of this is the construction of the new General Consulate, deepening
the American presence in Tamaulipas and Coahuila, as well as their bonds with the region.


This project represents an investment of almost 155 millions of dollars, the commitment
of the United States Government with Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and Coahuila, to
collaborate during the following decades. It is a building designed with the environment
on mind, since it will incorporate several sustainable features, such as efficient lighting,
water saving plumbing accessories, rainwater harvesting, among others; for which it has
been honored by the Green Construction Board of the United States LEED®


The 7 building campus will be located in a 5.6 acre site and has more than 14,300 m2
of construction, just south of the center of Nuevo Laredo in Paseo Colon Avenue. It will
include an office building, new additional windows for visa interviews in our Consulate
Section, a residence of the United States Marines Security Guard, additional parking
areas. The completion of this project is foreseen for late 2017.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a macroeconomic magnitude that expresses the
monetary value of the production of goods and services of final demand of a country or
region during a determined period (normally a year).


The Manufacturing Industry represents 37% of the economic activity of Nuevo Laredo,

Indicators of the Urban Competitiveness Rate 2016


Nuevo Laredo is acknowledged by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) as one
of the cities with greatest progress in Competitiveness in Mexico. Nuevo Laredo moved 19
positions in the general ranking between 2012 and 2014 from 60 to 41.

Indicators of the City Budget Information Rate (IIPM) 2016


In this City Management 2016-2018, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, has made a commitment
with Competitiveness therefore we signed a collaboration agreement with IMCO being
one of the few cities in national territory to establish this commitment. Nuevo Laredo
heads toward the consolidation in Public Finance as a transparent city that fulfills with
the government accountability and provides the best practices in income and expense
issues, therefore gives it confidence and credibility on a national and international level.


At the end of 2016 the current administration achieved an increase of 10 percentile points
in its fulfillment level, registering a 69% of fulfillment and placing above the national
media (33%) of 453 evaluated cities.


During the period of 2013-2016 there was a growth of 41 percentile points, such as is
indicated in the following graph.
