ABOUT ME

PART I

If you head to a book sale, there will always
be a family that buys five boxes, dense with
books, like there won't be any other chance.
My family was like that. We have thousands
of books, stacked neatly on the shelves of the
beloved family library upstairs. We each
owned our own collection of favourite books,
kept in the selves of our respective rooms.
Every one of my siblings have written or
drawn comics or stories, each with different
and unique concepts. In other words, we were
(and still are) a book crazy family.

Because I grew up in a house without

gadgets, reading was my number one March 2019 - Hunting for bargains
pastime. I enjoyed imagining scenarios and

laughing when reading comics, and I loved

listening to my father's voice as he read to us

every night before bed, where I would dream

of storytime.

PART II

Like every child, I grew up thinking everyone
was like me. Though at the age of 7, I learned
that that wasn't exactly true. In fact, I
discovered that not many other children
shared my passion for books, or my
fascination with the characters I had met on
various pages. This was a disappointing
discovery on my part. Though I was
imaginative and somewhat opinionated for a
child my age, I was shy and found difficulty in
talking to the other kids. It didn't help that I
didn't have much in common with them.

August 2011 – Reading Time Luckily for me, I managed to make friends,
and managed to introduce them to some
awesome books I’d read, and our shared love
of these books cemented the friendship. The
satisfaction I gained from this small victory felt
amazing, and though it was nice enough that I
had friends to talk about books with, a little
seed was planted in my heart and I dreamed
of taking it just a step further.

ABOUT ME

PART III July 2020 – With my schoolfriends

My high school life was fun, my friends were
nice and we had a lot in common. However, a
few things had changed at home. My dad’s
health had taken a downturn. He was only 36
when he had to start dialysis from a
congenital condition that had gradually
worsened over time. By the time I was in
Form 3, my dad had to take a step back from
his high-flying career, and mum was now the
one with the stable income, and she
absolutely stepped up to fill my dad’s shoes.
Dad’s treatments also meant no more
travelling, and so our beloved family holidays
generally disappeared.

So our life became fairly routine, and high
school life felt like a total non-event. Then, my
father showed me an interesting post on
Facebook. It was about an international non-
profit organisation called "Little Free Library".
The concept was that people would have little
shelves along their streets, and anyone could
take a book anytime and could leave it at any
other little library. I loved this idea. I loved that
there were no restrictions, so many people
could enjoy their books and take their time.
And I loved how you could continue to share
the books with anyone you want.

Immediately, I decided: this was going to be
my high school project: #BangiBookSharing.

ABOUT ME

PART IV July 2019 – Our Little Free Library
design
Today, I've managed to establish two Little
Free Libraries in Bangi. The first one in front
of my home, and the second at my school.
Let me tell you it’s hard work! I have had to
learn how to design bookshelves, how to talk
to carpenters, how to persuade people to
sponsor the bookshelves and donate books,
and how to increase awareness for my cause
on social media. My dream is to turn the
whole of Bangi into one GIANT OPEN AIR
LIBRARY. I hope to have LFLBangi
bookshelves everywhere in Bangi, and that
one day Bangi will truly be a book sharing and
reading community.

November 2019 – My amazing #BangiBookSharing is now an active effort on
team my part to spread the love of reading among
the people of Bangi. The project has moved
along slowly but surely, and though the work
does feel overwhelming at times, I'm glad I
took up this challenge, otherwise I'd be too shy
to speak my mind.

I'm grateful to my parents as well as my
grandparents, aunts and uncles who have
supported the cause. I’m so glad to have my
friends and my teachers for their continuous
support. My siblings are especially helpful in
handling the library. My oldest sister Marsya,
who has been my best friend since the day I
was born, my younger sister Zahra, who helps
me organise and stamp the books, my creative
brother, Hatim, who is never short on
brilliance, and little Khayra (who can't actually
read).

COMMUNITY PROJECT

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY BANGI

I established Little Free Library Bangi
(LFLBangi) in November 2019 after my
PT3 exams. The plans for this community
project were laid in April 2019 but were
put on hold till I finished my PT3 exams.

With the support of my siblings, we
scoped out the location of the first library
and designed our pilot LFL. The design
had to be easily modified to suit different
locations in future. The first library was
located in front of my house in Seksyen 4
Tambahan Bandar Baru Bangi.

The simple idea was started to encourage
the sharing of books among the people of
Bangi, and at the same time encourage
the reading culture. We named this
concept #BangiBookSharing.

The Library Rules

There are no rules!

The books on the shelves of LFLBangi are
free to be borrowed by anyone!
–  No registrations
–  No memberships
–  No time limits
The borrowed books can be returned to any
LFL Bangi bookshelf, whenever the borrower
feels he no longer needs or enjoys the book.
Or the book can be passed on to someone
else who will enjoy the book.

LFL Bangi shelves would also always be open
to receiving book donations from anyone who
wants to support the #BangiBookSharing
movement.

COMMUNITY PROJECT

The LFL Bangi Dream

The Prophet teaches us that the best of
charity is when a man gains knowledge,
then he teaches it to his brother.

Our vision is to turn the whole of Bangi into
one GIANT OPEN AIR LIBRARY. We hope
to have LFLBangi bookshelves everywhere
in Bangi, and EVERYONE can just pick up
and return books at any of the available
bookshelves. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Building up Steam

In February 2020, my school Sekolah Jalan
Empat invited me to launch a LFLBangi
Bookshelf. I designed the bookshelf, and
started looking for sponsors to make it a reality.
Although the launch was delayed because of the
CoViD19 RMO, we successfully launched in
August 2020 at no cost to the school. I wrote to a
book rental business that was closing down, and
even managed to secure books from them for our
initial collection.

Since we began, my father’s friend who is the
owner of the Bangi KUMON centre took our
challenge and opened a LFL Bangi in Seksyen 15.

We have plans in the pipeline to launch 2 more
LFLBangi in the coming months, insyaAllah. And
we have so many enquiries from all over the
country including teachers from Terengganu and
Seremban, asking me how to start a similar
program in their own areas!

Although I sometimes feel like I’m in over my head
(it can get a bit overwhelming for a shy teen), I
feel so amazed that the simple act of sharing can
touch so many.

#BangiBookSharing.

47

COMMUNITY PROJECT

Putting Bangi on the Map!

Our small efforts have gotten a little attention.
I and my siblings did a social media marketing
blitz when we first launched, with the aim of:
•  Increasing awareness about the movement.
•  To encourage people to borrow books.
•  To encourage people to donate books.
Our Facebook page is at:
https://www.facebook.com/bangibooksharing
We engaged with more than 16,000 people on
Facebook within 3 weeks! And we’ve never lacked
for books being donated, Alhamdulillah.

Getting noticed

Our little #BangiBookSharing has been getting noticed online. A web writer
published a short article about us, and the Head of Little Free Library
International even mentioned us!
Whatever it is, I truly hope my beloved Bandar Baru Bangi grows this
movement, and one day, we can all can walk down any street in Bangi and pick
up a book to enjoy.
