“Happy I Ams”

27th January 2017 (Inspired by the poem “Sad I Ams” by Trevor Millum)

I am
a coloring book
filled with creativity,
Showing others
how amazing the world can be,
Lots of colors
and curiousity.

I am
a box of crayons
still new and pristine,
A high quality sketchbook
so white and still clean,
Permission from mum
to cut up old magazines,
Everything perfect
for a crafts-crazy teen.

I am
a pair of Nike’s
worn for a run,
in the park
before out comes the sun,
The satisfaction
of exercises done.

I am
a comfortable beanbag
joy without measure,
A favourite novel
giving endless pleasure,
A hot cup of cocoa
with marshmallows like treasure,
No homework at all
a whole Sunday of leisure.

“Made in China”

12th May 2018

Men are made in China.
Made to look good, to catch the eye
Made a bit shallow and empty inside.
Made to capture attention as they go past,
Made to conceal how long they last.
Made to be something you can’t afford,
Made to be useless as soon as they’re bored.

“A Mother’s Lullaby”

26th April 2020

She covered her mouth and nose with her handkerchief. Her body felt so
hot, it hurt so much. She couldn’t feel anything but the heat, as if engulfing
her whole. Is this where she would die? Is this her end? One could not
think of a more unsatisfying ending, as Sarah was such an ambitious girl,
her dreams brimming with potential.

Sarah rose to her feet and slowly stumbled toward the wooden door, the
only exit. The metal doorknob was burning hot, but she endured the pain.
She had to get out. She pushed the door as hard as she could in her given
situation, but there was something heavy barricading the door from the
other side. It was no use. She was trapped.

Growing only weaker, she lay herself on the floor in the corner of the room,
furthest away from the source of heat. The smoke grew thicker yet, but
luckily the ventilator was open. They say that a blindfold can heighten ones
other senses, so Sarah shut her eyes tight. She heard the siren, blaring
through the night. She heard the sounds of people, scuttling around in
panic. She heard the radiocomms of the firefighters communicating over
their walkie-talkies. And she heard her mother.

Though she knew it was all in her head, Sarah still heard her. Her mother
was scolding her for being a first-grade idiot. Sarah smiled to herself, lost
in her thoughts. She started singing her mother’s lullaby. It was a song
unique to its own, because her mother wrote it herself before her passing.
She hummed the solemn tune until her consciousness faded away
completely.

When she came to, Sarah was at the hospital. According to the doctor’ she
had nearly died of smoke inhalation when a firefighter heard her lullaby
through the ventilating system. They quickly rushed to her aid, breaking
down the exit door. Sarah was surprised. She never expected rescue. She
laughed at the thought of her mother’s song as her savior. If it had not
been for that song, she’d have wound up dead. Looks like she’d have to
thank her mother once she was discharged. She was lucky to still be alive.

“The Advantages and disadvantages of giving homework to students”

26th June 2020

Schoolwork is important. It helps the students revise, and know their place in studies so they
may catch up if left behind. Every school teacher assigns schoolwork to their students. But
what about homework, the schoolwork that is expected to be done when the students are at
home? Is it necessary? Do they do more harm than help?

Of course, without question, homework is very advantageous in many ways. They help to fill in
the students’ free time. With this, the amount of time the students’ waste playing video games,
loitering in popular areas, smoking and doing drugs has decreased. The students will be forced
to fill their time doing their work and studying instead of these meaningless, harmful activities.
That is the more public opinion.

However, in my opinion, students who want to do these harmful activities probably don’t do
their work at all. Why do work when you can live life to the fullest? Instead, the good students,
the ones who actually pay attention to the teachers and study properly are given more and
more work. Unfortunately, too much expectation and responsibility may burden the students
and lead to stress.

Another said advantage of homework is that it gives the students a sense of responsibility. It
gives them a task to accomplish, and the student will set out to do so. This is of course very
useful in getting the students used to doing work, so they may get used to carrying out their job
s when they are older. This way, they will be able to carry out efficient work when they grow up
without any problems. This also teaches the students about the importance of deadlines.

However, teachers should be cautious about the setting of a deadline when assigning
homework to a child. They should keep in mind that the students have other work given by
other teachers, each with their own deadlines. If the workload becomes too much, the students
may not be able to finish on time and may be subjected to mental stress or severe depression.

But, homework also acts as revision. It helps the student to re-learn what they had been taught
before and helps the students to remember the lesson easily. Not to mention, as it is being
taught again, the students may find that it is easier to understand the lesson than before.
Homework also helps to set examples of how their lessons are implemented in daily life.

Homework can also help a student to learn to love a subject. If they find that they do well in a
particular subject, or take interest in what is being taught, then they may be able to choose thei
r ambition more clearly. This helps them to see what path they may take as they enter college,
and work towards their goal. In other words, it can produce a drive for the students to work
harder.

When all is said and done, I personally find that homework is still very much necessary in life.
The only disadvantages of homework are when there is too much of it. And that is why the
answer is quite simple, really. Teachers and students both should be more wary about the
workload being given. If a student feels it’s too much, they should calmly address the problem
with their teacher, and the teacher should support the students understandingly.
