Thomaz Bellucci after a tough week in Australia.

I got my bags in LA. They were all there. I re-check them and in the process the
tag rips off. They tried to staple it back on and in my head I’m thinking, ‘There’s
no way this is making it to Houston.’ One bag didn’t make it until the next
morning. My other bag actually missed that first LA flight but somehow came on
the next one. So I waited at the airport for a couple hours for my bag.
My flight was 6 a.m. from Brisbane. I finally got to the hotel in Houston around
6 p.m. I stayed up as much as I could. Went out to dinner and did some work to
try and keep the body as fresh as possible. Then finally went to sleep around 9:30
and slept a good 10 or 12 hours. I was just out.
The next day, we get over the courts and it was a downpour. It was kind of good
because I could take another day here and relax and adjust to the time. So it was
nice to have Tuesday kind of off and refresh the body. And then hit for about an
hour on Wednesday, which was my first time on clay since the French Open.
Then went out on Thursday, just teed it up and fired away.

It’s interesting when I play Jack. I think it looks kind of ugly in completely out of gas. I was just so happy at the same time and

Sunday defeats Thomaz Bellucci 6-4 4-6 7-6(5)
I was excited to be in a final, of course. I hadn’t made one in
the US. I’ve been to plenty of semis. To make one in Houston,
especially after the crazy week that we had in Australia and
coming back, and playing a guy that is very good on clay, very
comfortable on clay, and has all of his titles on clay, I knew
that he would probably feel more comfortable in the final
than I would.
Against Thomaz, I really served very poorly. I wasn’t playing
great. I started to get a little mentally unstable, more than
usual. I was struggling with that a bit. And was just trying to find
the answers to my game. I played well for most of the week, and
I was just kind of at a loss for words of why that day, of all days,
my game decided to, for about 45 minutes to an hour, decided
to kind of go by the wayside. That was definitely a more stressful
match for me. Being down a break in the third, I didn’t think that

Wayne BryanLangston Trophy
2017 Langston Trophy Recipient
The graceful trophy was first presented in 1957 by the insurance firm of Langham,
Langston and Burnett, in the memory of Ernest Langston. An international tennis figure, Mr. Langston
served as the general chairman of the River Oaks Tennis Tournament for eight years and his personal influence was
responsible for attracting the nation’s top-ranked player here.
To carry on the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in the fine tradition of sportsmanship personified by Ernest
Langston is an imposing challenge. It is towards this end that the winners of the trophy strive.
