O pen. It was just amazing. Wow!”
5. Fans might think that shorter, faster players have a natural
advantage on a clay court, like here at River Oaks. You’re one of
the tallest players. Do you feel like the deck is stacked against you
on a clay court?
Querrey: “Not necessarily. Sometimes a clay court can play to a taller
player’s advantage. John Isner, Kevin Anderson, Milos Raonic and myself
may not do as well on clay as a hard court, but we’ve had some good
results on clay. The ball bounces higher on a clay court, and we like the
ball sitting up in a strike zone. And we have more time to hit the ball.
But the cons do outweigh the pros for a taller player. The game slows
down on clay, and it’s harder to put a ball away. As a tall guy,
I sometimes struggle to slide out to my right, things like that.”
6. Who was your tennis hero growing up?
Querrey: “I didn’t watch a lot of tennis growing up. When I was 13
or 14, that was when Andy Roddick started making a really big impact.
He wasn’t like a hero, but Roddick was the guy I liked to watch when
I was a teenager. He was the top American so he was my favorite
player.” (Note: add Andy Roddick to the list of Grand Slam champions
w ho Querrey has beaten.)
7. Fans may think tennis pros have nerves of steel. Do you get nervous
when you’ve got match point against Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray
at Wimbledon?
Querrey: “Maybe I do, probably without knowing it. The top 10 guys are
always getting their opponents’ best effort. When everything is working
for me, I feel that I have the game to beat those guys. The top players
don’t like playing aggressive baseliners. When we’re serving well and
seeing the ball clearly, we can be tough outs. As for
Novak, obviously he’s an incredible player. Yeah, I’ve beaten
him twice, but he’s beaten me seven or eight times. But I do
know it’s in me, if my game is clicking, I can beat him, and
that’s a good feeling going out there. Nerves are there, sure,
totally. It can happen at the strangest times. The most nervous I got
all of last year was match point in a doubles final in Vienna. I was
nervous playing Rafael Nadal in the final in Acapulco. But I wasn’t
nervous at match point playing Andy Murray at Wimbledon. It has to
do with many factors, like the match, the situation or how close the
score is.”
8. You hold one of the most obscure, curious records in tennis.
You once hit 10 aces in a row against your opponent in an ATP match,
the most since tennis began keeping that statistic. Were you hitting
135-mph rockets, was the other guy guessing wrong or what?
Tell me about it.
Querrey: “It was in 2007, in Indianapolis, the quarterfinals against James
Blake. He’s one of those returners who stands right at the baseline and
takes big cuts at the ball. He’s not drifting back and just trying to get the
ball in play. If you hit your spots against him, you can ace James a lot.
I just got in a groove that day. I was hitting my spots and James wasn’t
getting a good read on a few of them or he guessed wrong. I didn’t
realize how many aces I had in a row until after the match. (In case
you’re wondering, yes, Sam won the match.)
