VICE-CHANCELLOR’S REVIEW

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S
REVIEW

One year ago, the world was anticipating
towards the end of the year 2020 in the hope
that the year 2021 would mark the beginning
of the post-pandemic recovery. Unfortunately,
the impact and effect of the year 2020 on the
world continued all through the year 2021. With
the positive cases rising rapidly, on May 10th, the
government had taken a bold decision to place
the whole of Malaysia under the Movement
Control Order (MCO 3.0). In accordance with the
MCO 3.0 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs),
and in line with the Ministry of Higher Education’s
(MOHE), UNITEN had to be physically closed
and to conduct online Teaching and Learning
(T&L). During these challenging times, UNITEN
has been part of the solution in addressing
urgent educational challenges associated with
the coronavirus pandemic while strengthening
our aspiration to be among the world’s top
energy universities by 2030. The uniqueness of
UNITEN lies within its workforce with unwavering
commitment in transforming this beloved
institution that will best serve human society. This
level of engagement would strengthen the spirit
of togetherness in charting a better and brighter
future for UNITEN.

TOWARDS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

TEACHING & LEARNING CENTRE

Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) continues to support teaching and learning (T&L)
excellence at the university by providing effective teaching and learning experience for
both the lecturers and the students. In line with this, TLC conducts ongoing professional
development courses to equip lecturers with necessary teaching skills - pedagogy, technology
and content knowledge as well as to empower them with up-to-date teaching innovations.

The ongoing pandemic challenges since COVID-19 hit the country in 2020 have significantly shifted the
T&L strategies into virtual learning. Despite the challenges of virtual learning, UNITEN has managed to
successfully endure fully virtual learning experiences for six consecutive semesters from March 2020 until
January 2022. The virtual learning implementation was conducted fully online with adequate supporting
educational tools and technology such as the Brighten Learning Management System (LMS) and Microsoft
Office 365. The main reason for a smooth transition into virtual learning was because Blended Learning
has been practiced at UNITEN since 2016. Blended Learning is defined as the integration between face-
to-face and online or virtual learning. It offers a unique experience that focuses on the learning that
takes place, rather than the technology that supports it. As part of the BOLD 2025 initiative to provide
T&L excellence, Blended Learning has been experienced and benefited by both the students and
lecturers since it was introduced. In 2021, UNITEN has successfully reached 81.33% of Blended Learning
implementation in most courses and 95.6% of lecturers have successfully achieved Blended Learning
Level 2 “Enhanced Learning”. Our lecturers continue to progress and strive to achieve a higher level of
BL implementation to offer a quality learning experience with TLC as the driving force.

As advancement in T&L, the 2021 International Conference on Advancing and Redesigning
Education (ICARE’21), an international virtual conference was organised by the Government-
Linked Universities (UNITEN, UTP, MMU and UniKL) on 22-24 November 2021. The objective of
ICARE’21 is to establish a collaboration opportunity and emphasise building relationships between
academics and industry. It is also to strengthen the research culture among educators and
researchers specifically in Teaching and Learning areas in the era of post and beyond COVID-19.

Alongside the quest for T&L excellence at the university, UNITEN lecturers aim to excel by showcasing
their best practices in T&L and teaching innovations in both national and international competitions too.
In 2021, 11 gold awards at the international level and 8 gold awards at the national level were acquired
by our esteemed lecturers in various teaching and academic innovation exhibitions and competitions.

TLC is delighted to be the best partner for academics in delivering quality teaching and learning
experience and will continue to support, promote, and enhance inclusive teaching and effective
pedagogical practices at the university.
