Dear TDC Families,
For our 25th anniversary celebration, I chose a recital theme that evoked the glamour and
ceremony that 25 years deserves. And the Winner is... celebrates the pomp and circumstance
of the Oscars, the Tonys, The Grammys, and other awards shows. Even Nobel Prize and literary
awards winners are represented in the show.
Our show theme may celebrate winners, but I want to emphasize to our students that a true
“win” is when they give it their all … and not at the expense of someone else. Part of a winning
performance is the harmony achieved in the teamwork. We need to remember to lift those
around us up, to cheer them on and support them. Because if each dancer does these things for
each other, everyone’s potential rises. Everyone has the capability to win.
I am lifted up daily by the incredible team of teachers and administrative staff here at The Dance
Corner, and I could not have built the business, culture and community that we have without
their support and dedication over the past 14 years. I am thankful to all of them and to Miss
Denise who chose me to carry on what she created. This truly has been the biggest and best
challenge of my life and I am grateful
that I get to do what I love every day.

Meet Our Instructors

CARRIE SMITH has been teaching dance throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts for over 25

years and is a qualified member of Dance Educators of America. Originally from Barnstable, MA, Carrie
began her dance training at the Cape Cod Conservatory. She graduated from Walnut Hill School for
the Arts in Natick, MA and earned her B.A. in dance performance and choreography from Connecticut
College, where she studied with such notable teachers as Peggy Lyman, Sara Rudner, Jaclyn Villamil,
David Dorfman, and Dan Waggoner. Carrie spent her college semester abroad studying modern dance
and Caribbean folk dance at the School of the National Dance Theatre of Jamaica. She has danced with
the National Youth Ballet and performed in world premiere choreography by Doug Nielsen and at the
American College Dance Festival. When she’s not at the studio Miss Carrie loves spending time with her
dogs Tippy and Hugo and her beloved Glen. Miss Carrie looks forward to sharing her love of dance with
the students of The Dance Corner for many years to come.

SAVANNA BODNAR is a lyrical/contemporary dancer who trained at The Dance Connection in East

Haven, CT. She has taught ballet, jazz and lyrical at Jump Dance Center in Pelham NY, Breaking Ground
Dance Center in Pleasantville NY, and The Dance Connection in East Haven. She holds her B.A. in History
from Manhattanville College.

During her time there she was a featured dancer for many original student pieces and also worked with
accomplished choreographers Nicholas Leichter, Arthur Fredrick, Doug Elkins, and Stacey Forsyth Mahan.
She competed as part of the US Showdance Team for 3 years, and took home a Silver Medal in the Adult
Group category in 2009.

KATIE BROWNE, a Connecticut native, has an extensive performing arts background including

Ballet, Tap and Modern dance, as well as stage experience as part of the ensemble for The Opera
Theater of Connecticut. Her training experience includes the José Limón Dance Company, Bill T. Jones/
Arnie Zane Dance Company, Elephant Jane Dance, Danny Buraczeski, Brian Jones, and Nicola Hawkins
Dance Company, as well as Master Classes with Joe Lanteri, Alan Onickel, Stephen Pier, Laurie Kanyok,
and Suzi Taylor. Kate studied Dance Performance and Studio Art at Rhode Island College, eventually
going on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with a minor in Studio Art/Painting. In addition
to her art, she currently works as a Registered Nurse, Certified Chair Yoga instructor, and Reiki Master/
Teacher at the VA Hospital.

BROOKE COTTER began her dance training at 3 years old studying a broad range of styles such as

Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip-hop, and Modern. From the age of 6, Brooke competed in
numerous competitions throughout New England with Caffery’s Dance and The Dance Corner Company.
She started choreographing her Tap solos at the age of 13, receiving many titles and awards such as
“Outstanding Choreography and Technique”. She continued to further her skills at Broadway Dance
Center, Steps on Broadway and DanceMasters.

As a graduate of NVCC, Cotter earned her degree in Visual and Performing arts, with a focus in Dance.
She choreographed and performed for the Terpsichorean Dance Club and Ensemble. Brooke is a dancer
for DFX Ent. where she performs at venues such as Foxwoods Resort Casino. She was also a featured
tap dancer in Shed! A Tap Show directed by Keith Leonhardt. Currently, she is a member of two dance
companies; Visceral Movement and The CT Tap Collaborative. Brooke enjoys sharing her passion for
dance as an Instructor and Choreographer around CT.

CHRISTINE FINCH was born and raised in Connecticut. She began dancing at the age of three.

At age ten, Christine began her preprofessional training at Eastern Connecticut Ballet, training in
ballet, pointe, modern dance, jazz and character dance. She attended several summer dance programs
including Boston Ballet’s Summer Dance Program and Ohio Dance Theater’s Summer Dance Program.
Christine continued her dance studies at Butler University where she took numerous courses in dance
and early childhood education and development.

She attended a week long seminar on Early Childhood Education and Development in Reggio Emilia,
Italy. Christine graduated from Butler University in May 2011 with a B.A. in Dance Pedagogy and has
been teaching dance at numerous dance studios in the Midwest and New England during and since
completing her degree. Just recently, Christine attended an Adaptive Dance workshop at Boston Ballet.
She is extremely passionate about working with differently-abled students and adults and is ecstatic
about sharing Adaptive Dance with the community.

CATHERINE FLORENTINE began dancing at The Dance Corner when she was two years old and

was a Dance Corner dancer for 15 years. She competed with both the TDC Company and the Mulkerin
School of Irish Dance and went to Ireland to perform Irish Step as an Emerald Dancer in 2011. Catherine
began her training in acrobatics with Naja Muller while at TDC and taught Acrobatics at Broadway
Kids and Company before coming back to The Dance Corner in 2017.  Catherine is a Tumbling Effect
certified instructor and continues to further her studies in acrobatics, tumbling, strength and flexibility
by attending workshops and professional training events whenever she can.  Catherine graduated
Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Connecticut College in New London, CT, with a B.A. in
Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology.  While at Conn she studied modern and ballet dance with
noteworthy choreographers Heidi Henderson, David Dorfman, and Derrick Yanford. Catherine plans on
attending Dental School in 2019.

Outside of The Dance Corner, she enjoys conducting research in a chemistry lab, working out, and studying to become a certified
personal trainer. Catherine couldn’t be more excited to be teaching at The Dance Corner while sharing her love and passion for
dance, tumbling, and acrobatics!

ELIZABETH FLORENTINE danced at The Dance Corner for 14 years, competing in with their jazz,

tap, lyrical, and production groups for seven years. Elizabeth has also been an Irish step dancer since she
was 7 years old and traveled to Ireland with the Mulkerin School of Irish Dancing in 2011 as a member of
their elite group, the Emerald Dancers.

Elizabeth recently graduated from Sacred Heart University in 2017 with a major in Social Work and a
minor in Dance. As a member of SHU’s Dance Company, Elizabeth studied under the direction of many
distinguished teachers including Kari Williams, Keith Leonhardt, and Christina Coleman. Elizabeth
graduated from Columbia University with her Masters in Social Work in May 2018 and is excited to be
back at The Dance Corner to share her love for dance with all of the students!!

SAMANTHA (WELCH) HERMANN started dancing at the age of 3 and competing at the age

of 7 at The Dance Connection in East Haven, CT, where she extensively trained in jazz, tap, ballet, and
lyrical. During this time, she participated in regional and national competitions all over the country
winning numerous awards and scholarships. She started teaching dance at the age of 12 and became a
staff member of The Dance Connection at the age of 16.

While earning her Bachelors Degree in Justice and Law Administration at Western Connecticut State
University, she was a member of the Dance Team in which she performed and choreographed routines
for the team. Samantha is very excited to be teaching dance again and is looking forward to sharing her
talents with students at The Dance Corner.

KATHARINE “K.T.” NELSON-HART began dancing at the relatively “late” age of thirteen.

She instantly fell in love with dance, and felt that it really rounded out her musical theatre interests.
Always needing something to keep her feel moving and her mind busy, KT agreed to attend an
audition for the competitive dance team at her home studio (Elite Dance Academy, Inc.) and was
immersed in dance classes ranging from ballet, pointe, modern, contemporary/lyrical, hip hop, tap, and
character dance. She was awarded a full scholarship to Southern Union State Community College, and
dove head first into not only choreography and stage work, but also performing arts education itself.
Soon after completing her AS, KT moved to Virginia Beach, where she danced with Lakewood Ballet
Company and Todd Rosenlieb Dance Ensemble while also performing with multiple theatre companies
to keep learning.  KT also began working for StarQuest Dance Competition, International, as well as
Impact Dance Adjudicators, as a competition judge and master teacher. KT holds a BFA in Dance and
Theatre Arts and her BS in Business Administration from SUNY Empire State College.

KELSEY PAFF began dancing with New Haven Ballet at the age of ten. Kelsey has participated in programs at Walnut Hill

School for the Arts, Boston Ballet, Nutmeg Conservatory, Saratoga Summer Dance Intensive, Eastern
Connecticut Ballet, and the Princeton Ballet School. Kelsey holds a B.A. from the College of the Holy
Cross where she received a double major in world literature and studio art, with a minor in architectural
studies. Kelsey has most recently taught at Eileen’s Academy of Dance in Pennsylvania and currently
teaches adult and preschool dance classes at the Neighborhood Music School.

Kelsey is looking forward to being back at The Dance Corner where she first started assistant teaching
as a high school student!

NICOLE PETERSON began her dance education at Gloria Jean’s Studio of Dance and competed

nationally with them before continuing her training at The Dancer’s Studio and Wendy’s School of
Dance. Nicole went on to study at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA and
performed in the SCAD Dance Theatre Company as a dance captain and choreographer. She finished
her degree at Central Connecticut State University, graduating with BFA in Theatre with a Dance
Concentration. At CCSU Nicole performed with DanCentral at the American College Dance Festival.

After graduating Nicole performed for several years with Clark Dance Theatre based in New Haven,
where she was a choreographer and dance captain. Nicole was also a member of the dance department
at the Westport Country Playhouse and an instructor at Body-N-Motion in Guilford. Nicole currently is
on the teaching staff at Choate Rosemary Hall for their Young Artists Program. When she’s not at TDC,
Nicole loves spending time with her son Sam, and her husband Chris.  Nicole is so happy to be a part of The Dance Corner team!

LINDA SURAVICH has been dancing since she was 5 years old. Her dance roots are based in

Connecticut, studying at Miss Diane’s School of Dance, Backstage Dance Center and The Dance Corner!
Linda trained in tap, jazz, and lyrical with The Dance Corner Company and competed in numerous
competitions throughout the state. Upon attending Salve Regina University, Linda began dancing
with SRU Dance, the University’s student run dance club. Linda has choreographed tap numbers for
SRU Dance for the Fall and Spring showcases during her sophomore, junior, and senior year at Salve.
She became SRU Dance’s Co-Captain during her senior year. Linda has also been a leading member of
the Let Loose Dance Troop at Salve. Let Loose provides opportunities for children with disabilities to
enjoy the power of dance and movement. Linda graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education and
is currently a local middle school teacher. She is thrilled to be back in the studio and a member of The
Dance Corner team once again!

STEP

(Student Teacher Education Program)

is The Dance Corner’s dance teacher training program. STEP team members
assist with class, learn leadership and mentoring skills and learn how to structure
and lead a dance class. We are training the next generation of teachers and leaders!
