As part of an occasional feature, Andy Greeves Super SubSUB
takes at a look back at a match in which a
substitute has made a real impact for us. Today he SUPER
remembers Garry Brooke’s contribution in our 2-0
FA Cup fourth round victory over Hull City in 1981.
Our 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers in an FA
Cup third round replay at White Hart Lane on January
7, 1981 set up a home clash with then-Third Division
side Hull City in the next round.
The match against the Tigers on 24 January was
played amidst the backdrop of the old West Stand
at the Lane – which originally opened back in 1909 –
being demolished. The structure was being removed
to make way for a new 6,500-seater stand, featuring
72 executive boxes, which opened just over a year
later.
Despite only three of the four stands being open,
a healthy crowd of 37,523 packed into the ground for
the fourth round tie. They witnessed an exciting first
half in which Hull goalkeeper Tony Norman was in
inspired form.
In the opening exchanges, he made a fine save
– tipping a Garth Crooks effort from outside the
penalty area over the crossbar at full-stretch at the
Park Lane end of the ground. Norman also kept out
a close-range Crooks header from a pin-point Glenn
Hoddle cross. At the other end, Keith Edwards got
to a lofted pass from Brian Marwood before Barry
Daines but ended up putting his lob-shot over our
goalkeeper just wide of the far post from the edge of
the 18-yard-box.

Brooke also played a part in our second goal of
the afternoon, scored with a minute of normal time
remaining. His 30-yard pass found Steve Perryman
close to the right touchline, deep in Hull’s half of the
field. Our skipper found Crooks, who in turn teed-up
Archibald and he span and fired past Norman.
We went on to win the FA Cup during the
1980/81 season, beating Coventry City, Exeter
City and Wolverhampton Wanderers to reach the
tournament’s 100th final against Manchester City
on 9 May, 1981. Following a 1-1 draw after extra-
time in the original game, we returned to Wembley
Stadium five days later for the replay. A brace from
Ricky Villa and a further strike from Crooks sealed
our 3-2 victory.
Brooke featured as a substitute for Villa in the
final while he remained on the bench in the replay
during a career that saw him make 101 competitive
appearances for us between 1980 and 1985. Having
made his Spurs debut in our 3-2 home defeat to
West Bromwich Albion on 29 November, 1981, he
scored the first of his 18 goals in our colours with a
brace in a 4-4 draw with Southampton at White Hart
Lane on Boxing Day 1981.
Brooke was involved in a near fatal car crash in
February 1983 but recovered in time to feature in
four UEFA Cup matches during the 1983/84 season
as we went on to win the competition. He moved
to Norwich City during the summer of 1985, having
spent a period on loan with Swedish side GAIS while
with us.
Brooke later featured for Dutch side Groningen,
Wimbledon, Stoke City (loan), Brentford and
Reading, while he also turned out for non-league
clubs including Baldock Town, Colchester United,
Wivenhoe Town, St Albans City, Romford, Worthing,
Cornard United and Braintree Town towards the end
of his career.
After retiring from playing, Brooke ran a
sports shop and soccer school in Muswell Hill and
worked as a match reporter for the Professional
Footballers’ Association and Press Association. He
has regularly featured for our Spurs Legends side
over the years and was once a part of our Football in
the Community scheme.

For Gio though, there was a slow and
frustrating start to his time as a Spur. Having
signed for us on deadline day on a season-
long loan deal from Betis, the Argentine
international appeared in three of our first
four games but then suffered a hip injury while
on duty with La Albiceleste in the middle of
September.
Just as he was beginning to build up steam in
the Premier League, the setback saw him miss
eight games. However, since recovering from
that issue, he has missed only five games while
he has played in each of our last four outings.
And he admits now he is just focussing on what
is in front of him as he looks to continue his
development under Jose Mourinho.
“My injury cost my progress here a little when
I arrived,” Gio explained. “It particularly cost
me even more because I was coming to a new
club, to a new league, but now I am adapted to

Scorer of Middlesbrough’s opener when we visited the Riverside Stadium last week,
Ashley Fletcher is a much-travelled young forward with an impressive eye for goal. He
joined Manchester United as a 13-year-old, coming through the ranks at Old Trafford
ahead of a loan spell with Barnsley, for whom he scored nine goals. He then joined
West Ham on a permanent deal, with his only strike for the Hammers coming against
former employers Manchester United in the League Cup. He signed for Middlesbrough
for £6.5m in the summer of 2017, but then spent time on loan at Sunderland during
2018. Fletcher is also a former England Under-20 international, with two goals in three
games at that level.

TTRrue ColoursUECOLOURS We all have our favourites when
it comes to past Spurs kits and,
sometimes, they can evoke
memories of specific games,
moments and the players who wore
them. Continuing our series for the
2019/20 season, Billy Shaw chats to our players –
past and present – to find out what comes into their
minds when they look back at a selection of our
shirts from seasons gone by. Today, young centre-
back Japhet Tanganga is in the hot seat…
SPURS AWAY KIT,
2012/13
“To be honest, I could name a few players for this
blue one,” said Japhet, pointing to our away kit
from 2012/13.
“I was only young but obviously I watched Spurs
a lot and so I remember seeing Gareth Bale score
some goals in this kit. The one at Swansea maybe?
“Also Rafa van der Vaart pops into my head, even
though he’d probably have been coming to the end
of his time here.
“Scott Parker is another one – I just remember
this shirt along with the white home version
because of those players.”
The Swansea fixture Japhet is referring to was
our 2-1 win at the Liberty Stadium in March, 2013,
when Bale set up Jan Vertonghen to score and vice
versa for the second goal.
And our talented young defender clearly has a
precise memory as van der Vaart wore this navy
shirt, which featured blue chevrons running down
the back, in his penultimate appearance for the
Club away at Newcastle United in August, 2012,
before he moved back to German side Hamburg.
