Ann Taylor and Jane Taylor were sisters and collaborator. They were poets and critics.
Their verse Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is one of the most popular verses among
children. Through the poem “The Foolish Fish” the Taylor sisters want to teach their
readers how awful it can be if the youngsters (people with poor judgments and less
experience of the world) do not listen to what their elders say. The young fish insists
to his mother to allow him go and have a bite at the worm hanging with the fishhook.
Mother fish tells him that a sharp hook was hiding underneath the worm and once he
tried to catch it , he would be hooked up and taken. To convince the young fish, she tells
him the story of the young trout who did not listen to its mother. The young trout went
trying the worm and lost its life in an unfortunate situation.

3 Read the poem ‘The Rivals’ and do the tasks given below.
The Rivals
I heard a bird at dawn
Singing sweetly on a tree,
That the dew was on the lawn,
And the wind was on the lea;
But I didn’t listen to him,
For he didn’t sing for me!
I didn’t listen to him,
For he didn’t sing for to me
That the dew was on the lawn
And the wind was on the lea!
I was singing at the time,
Just as prettily as he!
I was singing at the time,
Just as prettily as he!
I was singing at the time,
As prettily as he,
About the dew upon the lawn,
And the wind upon the lea!
So I didn’t listen to him,
As he sang upon the tree!

As stated in the specification grid a (mostly the other is a poem but it is not necessarily
so: there might be two passages as well) passage form grade IX English book is asked
in the examinations of class IX. It carries ten marks and consists of any three test items
out of:
a. Short answer questions b. True/False
c. Ordering d. Multiple choice
e. Cloze f. Fill in the space
g. Vocabulary or h. Matching
Seen reading texts may look familiar to the examinees because they are the ones they
have already practised in the class. But trying to solve the questions based on these
passages on the basis of your previous knowledge is sometimes risky. So whether seen
or unseen, it is necessary that you go through the passage there and then and only after
that you should try to attempt the questions. Reading carefully there and then will give
them new ideas that may be in line with the questions asked in the test papers. You
should remember the tips given under comprehension.
