Interchange Communicative English is an activity based English language
coursebook series that covers Primer A & B, and grades 1 through 8. This
series has been designed to ensure young learners’ success in learning
English in the EFL context.

Planned with young learners in mind, Interchange Communicative English
of graded readers provides engaging real world content that our
learners will want to study. The series meets all the practical language
needs of young learners, offering opportunities to practise all language
skills. Moreover, learners can boost their confidence using the activities
for comprehensive self-study of practical English, which in turn, support
personalised learning and give them an enriched learning experience.
Moreover, lively lessons relevant to learners’ lives and learning needs
with engaging topics, tasks and activities make learning enjoyable and
rewarding. We hope all teachers will enjoy reading these books as much
as we did. We know the students will!

In order to materialize our concepts, we took significant help from our
colleagues, students and different authors. We have tried to acknowledge
each of them at the same point where their contributions are helpful in
edifying the learning units. Similarly, texts from other sources have been
attributed to the original authors and publishers whenever possible and
are believed to fall within fair use provisions.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Chandreshwar Mishra for painstakingly
going through the entire series and making very valuable suggestions
for its improvement. Many thanks are due to both Guinness and Wonjala
Desktop teams who have shaped the books the way they are. We are also
indebted to the teachers who piloted the manuscript, and whose comments
and feedback were invaluable in finetuning the exercises according to the
learners’ levels. We would like to solicit further suggestions and feedback
from the teachers, students and other stakeholders using these coursebooks.

relaxed?
• Do you like reading poems?

Let’s Read

A. Here is a poem that describes a student's first day at school
and his or her newness and ignorance towards school. Think

about the title carefully. Without reading the poem what
does this mean to you? What could the poem be about?

B. Now read the following poem.

First Day at School
A millionbillionwillion miles from home

Waiting for the bell to go. (To go where?)
Why are they all so big, other children?

So noisy? So much at home they

Must have been born in uniform
Lived all their lives in playgrounds

Spent the years inventing games
That don't let me in. Games

That are rough, that swallow you up.

And the railings.

All around, the railings.
Are they to keep out wolves and monsters?

Things that carry off and eat children?

Things you don't take sweets from?

Interchange Communicative English 4 3

Perhaps they're to stop us getting out

FOR SAMPLE ONLY
Running away from the lessins. Lessin.
What does a lessin look like?

Sounds small and slimy.

They keep them in the glassrooms.
Whole rooms made out of glass. Imagine.

I wish I could remember my name
Mummy said it would come in useful.

Like wellies. When there's puddles.
Yellowwellies. I wish she was here.

I think my name is sewn on somewhere
Perhaps the teacher will read it for me.

Tea-cher. The one who makes the tea.

- Roger McGough

Meet the poet
Roger McGough (born on 9 November

1937) is one of the most popular British
poets. He was not interested in poems
when he was at school. However, he had
a Physics teacher who recited poetry

during Physics class. Since then, he started
enjoying poetry. When he became a
teacher in Liverpool, he himself recited the
poems to his students. He realized that

he was interested in poetry because his
students enjoyed them very much. That Roger McGough
shaped his career as a poet. Now, he has
written over 50 poetry books.

Let’s Read

You are going to read about a boy who never did his homework.
Read the story and find out if he really did not do his homework.
Who Did Patrick's Homework?

by Carol Moore
Patrick never did homework. "Too boring," he said. He played
baseball and basketball and Nintendo instead. His teachers told him,
"Patrick! Do your homework or you won't learn a thing." And it's true;

sometimes he did feel like a ding-a-ling.

But what could he do? He hated homework.

Then on St. Patrick's Day his cat was playing with a little doll and he

grabbed it away. To his surprise it wasn't a doll at all, but a man of the
tiniest size. He had a little wool shirt with old fashioned britches and
a high tall hat much like a witch's. He yelled, "Save me! Don't give me
back to that cat. I'll grant you a wish, I promise you that."

Patrick couldn't believe how lucky he was! Here was the answer to
all of his problems. So he said, "Only if you do all my homework 'til

16 Interchange Communicative English 4

FOR SAMPLE ONLY

the end of the semester, that's 35 days. If you do a good enough job,
I could even get A's."

The little man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper.

He kicked his legs and doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled
and pursed his lips, "Oh, am I cursed! But I'll do it."

And true to his word, that little elf began to do Patrick's homework.

Except there was one glitch. The elf didn't always know what to do
and he needed help. "Help me! Help me!" he'd say. And Patrick would
have to help -- in whatever way.

"I don't know this word," the elf squeaked while reading Patrick's

homework. "Get me a dictionary. No, what's even better. Look up the
word and sound it out by each letter."

When it came to math, Patrick was out of luck. "What are times
tables?" the elf shrieked. "We elves never need that. And addition

and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside me,
you simply must guide me."

Elves know nothing of human history; to them it's a mystery. So the
little elf, already a shouter, just got louder "Go to the library, I need

books. More and more books. And you can help me read them too."

Interchange Communicative English 4 17

As a matter of fact every day in every

way that little elf was a nag! Patrick
FOR SAMPLE ONLY
was working harder than ever and
was it a drag! He was staying up
nights, had never felt so weary, was
going to school with his eyes puffed

and bleary.

Finally the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. As for
homework, there was no more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the

back door.

Patrick got his A's; his classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled
and were full of praise. And his parents? They wondered what had
happened to Patrick. He was now the model kid. Cleaned his room,

did his chores, was cheerful, never rude, like he had developed a
whole new attitude.

You see, in the end Patrick still thought he'd made that tiny man do
all his homework. But I'll share a secret, just between you and me. It

wasn't the elf; Patrick had done it himself!

Let’s Write
FOR SAMPLE ONLY
A. Read the following opinion of a student about homework.

I don’t like homework. Nowadays teachers are giving homework even
during the holidays and I hate that very much. But I think there is a
reason for it. Homework is given so that we can remember whatever

we have learnt. Regular practice helps us remember what we have
read at school. But teachers have started to give too much homework.
We know too much of anything is bad. So homework should be given
with the idea of giving students a practice and not to overwork them.

B. What is your opinion on homework? Should homework be
given or banned? How much homework is okay for you? Now
write a short opinion paragraph on the same topic.

Let’s Connect

Now read the following draft essay on homework written by a
student.
Homework

One of the most difficult challenges that teachers and
parents are facing these days is getting children to do
their homework. Most children think that homework is
not useful and it is often boring. Yet, some believe that

homework is necessary. Whoever thinks in whatever
way, I think homework is good for students and that it Ashmita Puri
must be given regularly.

Homework is a learning activity, an assignment, a project which is a
part of school work that we should do at home. As we have different

subjects to study, we get homework of many subjects every day. I think
getting homework of two to three subjects is enough. Sometimes, we
get homework of many subjects on a single day. That’s too bad! We

will not get enough time to do the homework. Besides, we need to

26 Interchange Communicative English 4

play, watch TV and spend time with family members. So homework

must be given but in a balanced way.
FOR SAMPLE ONLY
I insist that homework must be given because it gives us practice.

We can practise the exercises learnt at school, we can revise the
lessons, and sometimes we learn something new. Homework makes
us independent learners. Moreover, if we regularly do the homework,

we won’t have to worry much about preparing for the exam.
On the other hand, we get a lot of homework daily which hampers our

rights (e.g. to have fun!). And if we cannot complete our homework
due to load-shedding, or personal problems, then we may be punished
by the teachers. But it is not that homework should not be given. Yes,it
should be given because it makes us revise our lessons and prepare for

the next class as some education experts say. But homework should
be given in a limit so that we will have spare time for other activities
as well. Again, I emphasize that homework must be a part of student
life.

Do you agree with Ashmita’s ideas about homework? What are
some similar ideas you share with Ashmita? Any differences?

Let’s Read

Read the following story.

The Way to School
Mary was seven years old. Her parents had recently moved to a
new town, and so Mary was going to a different school. It was a few

kilometers from the house which she now lived in with her parents,
but there was a school bus that went around picking up pupils every
morning and bringing them back to their homes every afternoon, and
as both of Mary’s parents had to go to work, she always went on this

bus. She had to be at a corner twenty meters from her door by half
past eight every day and the bus was usually on time, and never more
than a minute or two late.

Mary’s parents always set their alarm clock for six o’clock so that none
of them would be late. But one morning the alarm failed to go off,
and it was not until a quarter past eight that Mary’s mother suddenly

woke up, looked at the clock and said, “Whatever’s happened to that
clock?” and then hurried into Mary’s room. Mary was fast asleep, but

her mother woke her up and told her to get ready for school.

“I’m sorry, dear,” she said, “but you’ll have to wash and dress very
quickly, have an even quicker breakfast and then I’ll drive you to school
on my way to the office.”

“But how can you find the way, Mum?” Mary said, “You’ve been to

school only once.”
“Yes,” her mother answered, “but you’ve done the trip several times

now on the bus, so you can be my guide to get there, can’t you?”

“Oh, yes,” said Mary, “I suppose so.” She washed, and dressed, and
had a quick breakfast, and then they set off. Mary told her mother to
turn each time they came to a place she recognized. In this way she
made her mother drive round most of the town before they got to her

school. When they arrived, her mother saw that it was not really very
far from her house.

“Why ever did you make me go such a long way round, Mary, instead
of the most direct way?” her mother asked her.

“Well, Mum,” answered Mary, “it was because I didn’t know how else
to get here. That’s the way our bus always goes to pick up the other

children on the way to school."
