Blue Lagoon: ideal for beginners and for experi- enced divers; it’s a great place to observe some corals, seahorse, shoals of sardines and other kinds of seafloor. It can be reached both from beach and the bay and from as areas slightly further away, with depths between 20 and 30 meters.

Passeios nos Mangues
No estuário do rio Malanza, Sul da ilha de S. Tomé, encontra-se a maior reserva de mangues do Arqui- pélago. É um verdadeiro santuário ecológico, rico em fauna que habita estes tipos de ecossistemas. Galinha-de-água, pato marinho, garça-real, ma- çarico-das-rochas e até macacos podem ser obser- vados a alimentar-se de frutos tropicais no meio da frondosa vegetação. Habitualmente são orga- nizados passeios em canoas que ligam a costa ao interior, passando por entre os tufos de abundante vegetação. Fabuloso para fotografar e filmar.
Tours in the Mangroves
The estuary of the river Malanza, on the South of the island of São Tome is home to the largest mangrove reserve of the Archipelago. It is a true ecological sanctuary, rich in wildlife that inhabits these types of ecosystems. Moorhens, sea ducks, grey herons, sandpipers and even monkeys can be observed feeding themselves on tropical fruits in the middle of lush vegetation. There are organized tours in canoes linking the coast to the interior of the island, traversing between lush vegetation tufts. This provides fabulous images for photogra- phy and film.

COMO SE DESLOCAR

Devido à irregularidade orográfica das ilhas e, por vezes, à falta de qualidade da rede rodoviária, a maneira mais fácil de visitar a ilha de São Tomé é de jipe, que pode alugar-se num dos estabe- lecimentos de rent-a-car existentes ou no hotel de
hospedagem. No interior da cidade de São Tomé, que é plana, recomenda-se a descoberta a pé ou recorrendo a bicicletas alugadas. Sugere-se que utilize um cadeado para bloquear a roda traseira sempre que se afaste do lugar onde deixe o veí- culo. Convém discutir o preço do aluguer. Tam- bém é possível usar táxi, veículos automóveis de cor amarela estacionados principalmente na praça junto ao Mercado Municipal, ou então moto-táxis. É comum partilhar táxis entre vários passageiros. Recomenda-se que seja negociada e estabelecida a tarifa sempre que o objectivo seja viajar para fora da cidade de São Tomé.
Due to the orographic irregularity of the islands and sometimes the lack of quality good road net- work, the easiest way to get around the island of São Tome is by jeep, which can be rented in one of the existing rent-a-car businesses or in the hos- ting Hotel. The islet of Cabras
If bathing in paradise scenarios are one of your per- ditions, prepare yourself for making difficult choic- es while visiting São Tome and Principe. Here’s an- other tip for you so as to make your choices more difficult: the islet of Cabras. It is located near the city of São Tomé, in fact it can be seen from there, and you may use a boat of a fisherman or the ser- vices of a specialized agency to take a short boat trip there. The islet of Cabras may not be more than a dock for fishing or a place that once sup- plied stone for construction in the capital, but it certainly is a place for unforgettable bathing, with the city of São Tome at one’s eyes.

Atraente é o cenário que caracteriza o interior das il- has de São Tomé e do Príncipe, particularmente nas regiões de altitude entre 200 e 1000 metros, onde se podem observar variadíssimas espécies de flores que crescem de forma espontânea graças ao clima chuvoso e às temperaturas mais baixas. Muitas das flores aqui observadas, tais como as orquídeas e a rosa de porcelana, são recordações de eleição para muitos visitantes. Por tudo isto é fundamental uma visita ao Jardim Botânico do Bom Sucesso, uma concentração rara de variedades de flora que atrai botânicos de todo o mundo.
Unique flowers
The scenery that characterizes the interior of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe is attractive, par- ticularly in the regions of altitude between 200 and 1000 meters, where one can observe many species of flowers that grow spontaneously thanks to the rainy weather and to lower temperatures. Many of the flowers, namely the orchids and the porcelain rose are memories privileged by many visitors. This is exactly why it is worth visiting the Botanical Garden of Bom Sucesso, a rare concentration of flora varie- ties that attracts botanists from around the world.

O que resta da costa ocidental de São Tomé pratica- mente só é acessível pelo mar, em barcos de pesca- dores ou lanchas. Nesse caso, achamos mais prático fazer o passeio através de uma agência de viagens local para aqueles que pretendem conhecer o lado mais “selvagem” de São Tomé. E selvagem, aqui, nada tem de preconceito ou de perigoso, antes pelo contrário. Esta é a zona mais pura, mais intocada e onde o homem menos manda é o reino da floresta, do mato cerrado, dos coqueiros desalinhados e das tartarugas que aqui vêm desovar tranquilamente. E se as praias são bonitas: Jalé (onde existe uma ten- tativa de exploração turística com três bungalows), Xixi, Portinho, Baiã, enfim, uma parada de areais
que em que raramente se vislumbra os vestígios de um pé humano calcado na areia.

Existem razões para que os angolares, habitantes que se concentram sobretudo no Sudeste da ilha de São Tomé, sejam um grupo com características e expressões culturais muito próprias, incluindo o seu dialecto, o único do Arquipélago com origem genuinamente africana. Crê-se que os angolares são descendentes dos duzentos escravos proveni- entes de Angola que naufragaram nas Sete Pedras, um conjunto de rochas ao largo da costa, quando o navio que os transportava ali ficou despedaçado ainda nos primeiros tempos da colonização e da cul- tura da cana-de-açúcar, no século XVI. Os náufra- gos ergueram uma povoação no primeiro lugar que conseguiramalcançaremterrafirmeealisefixaram. Nem todos os investigadores da História são-to- mense concordam com esta interpretação, que par- te da ideia de que as ilhas eram desabitadas quando
aqui chegaram os navegadores portugueses João de Santarém e Pedro Escobar. Há historiadores que de- fendem que as ilhas eram habitadas pelos antepas- sados dos angolares quando os portugueses chega- ram em 1471. slaves from Angola who shipwrecked in Sete Pe- dras (Seven Stones), a set of rocks off the coast, as the vessel carrying them shattered in the early days of colonization and cultivation of cane of sugar, in the sixteenth century. The castaways settled at the first place they could set their foot on firm land. Not all researchers of the history of São Tome agree with this interpretation, which starts from the idea that the islands were uninhabited when the Por-
tuguese navigators João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar first arrived. Some historians argue that the islands were inhabited by the ancestors of the angolares when the Portuguese arrived in 1471. In any case it is a component of the people of São Tome marking the country and its culture, espe- cially in the region where the angolares are more concentrated that is called, in a significant way, São João dos Angolares.

Tchiloli é considerada a expressão cénica popular mais característica de São Tomé e Príncipe, um auto cuja interpretação e declamação faz parte das mais significativas festas do país.
A representação é uma adaptação da “Tragédia do Marquês de Mântua e do Imperador Carlos Mag- no”, atribuída a Baltazar Dias, conhecido como “o cego da ilha da Madeira”, herdeiro das tradições
dos jograis cegos medievais que andavam de feira em feira declamando as suas obras. O auto terá sido trazido pelos colonos portugueses, não sen- do conhecida em pormenor a data da introdução uma vez que a primeira edição impressa da peça é de 1664, quase 200 anos depois da chegada dos navegadores portugueses a São Tomé.
Na adaptação são-tomense o auto prolonga-se por cerca de cinco horas, no caso das representações menos longas, e é um desfile de um extenso grupo de atores, cerca de 30 sem contar com a banda de música, vestidos para o efeito e caracterizados com máscaras. Ao longo dos tempos a “tragédia” original do cego madeirense foi incorporando el- ementos próprios da cultura africana e da realidade são-tomense emergindo como “Tchiloli”, uma mani- festação cultural única e cativante. O culto popular associado ao auto traduz-se também pelo facto de os papéis serem hereditários, cada ator representa o mesmo papel durante toda a vida “passando-o” depois a filhos ou parentes que escolher.
Tchiloli is considered the popular scenic expres- sion most characteristic of São Tome and Principe, a play interpreted and recited the most important festivals of the country.
The play is an adaptation of the “Tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua and Emperor Charlemagne”, attributed to Baltazar Dias, known as “the blind of Madeira Island”, heir to the traditions of medieval blind minstrels who went from fair to fair declaim- ing their works. The play would have been brought by the Portuguese settlers, but the date of its intro- duction is not known since the first printed edition of the play dates back to 1664, almost 200 years after the arrival of the Portuguese navigators to São Tome. In the São Tome adaptation, the play goes on for about five hours, for the shorter representa- tions, and there is a parade of a large group of ac- tors, about 30, without mentioning the music band, dressed and wearing masks for the purpose. Over time the original “tragedy” of the blind from Ma- deira incorporated elements of African culture and of the reality of São Tome, emerging as “Tchiloli”, a unique and captivating cultural event. The popular cult associated with the play also reflects the fact that the roles are hereditary, with each actor playing the same role throughout life and “passing it” to their children or relatives that he/she chooses.

The Equator is one of São Tome and Principe at- tractions. It was the Portuguese admiral, scientist and air navigator Gago Coutinho who made the demarcation of the equator line, which passes

A Reserva Natural Obô
A Reserva Natural Obô foi criada em 2006 com o objectivo de proteger a riquíssima biodiversidade ex- istente no Arquipélago de São Tomé e Príncipe. Ocu- pa uma área de 295 quilómetros quadrados compreen- dendo as duas ilhas principais. O Parque Natural Obô é um santuário de fauna e flora onde podem ser observadas muitas espécies raras, algumas das quais

em vias de extinção. O elevado endemismo que se verifica na floresta são-tomense e a sua importância levou a que no ano de 1988 a comunidade cientí- fica internacional classificasse esta floresta como a segunda mais importante para a conservação da biodiversidade entre 75 florestas africanas. Localiza-se no interior de São Tomé e do Príncipe e caracteriza-se por ser uma floresta de altitude com precipitações permanentes, o que torna algumas das suas extensões de difícil acesso. É um local ide- al para o contacto com a biodiversidade existente nas ilhas. O período mais favorável para visitas é
durante a estação seca – no fim de Dezembro e Janeiro e de Junho a Setembro.
Natural Reserve Obô
Natural Reserve Obô was established in 2006 with the aim of protecting the rich biodiversity existing in the archipelago of São Tome and Principe. It oc- cupies an area of 295 square kilometers comprising the two main islands. The Obo Natural Park is a wildlife and flora sanctuary where many rare spe- cies can be observed, some of which are endan- gered. The high endemism that exists in the forest of São Tome, and its importance, led to the interna- tional scientific community to classify this forest in

1988 as the second most important for biodiversity conservation, among 75 African forests.
It’s located in the interior of São Tomé and Prín- cipe and is characterized by being a forest with permanent rainfall, which makes the access to some of its extensions difficult. It is an ideal place for contact with the existing biodiversity in the is- lands. The most favorable period to visit it is du- ring the dry season - at the end of December and January, and from June to September.

HOW TO GET THERE
Chega-se ao Príncipe de barco e de avião. A ilha dista cerca de 140 quilómetros de São Tomé, em direcção Nordeste. A companhia aérea de São Tomé e Príncipe disponibiliza quatro voos semanais entre as duas ilhas e cuja viagem demora cerca de 50 minutos. Se pretender deslocar-se de barco pode optar por travessia em embarcações de car- ga, que demoram oito horas, tendo horários e pe- riodicidade incerta. As obras de modernização do aeroporto e a construção do porto já terminaram, pelo que a ilha está acessível por aviões de muito maior capacidade e por embarcações com horários mais regulares e dedicadas a passageiros.

You get to the island of Principe by boat and by plane. The island is located around 140 kilometers from Sao Tome, heading northeast. The Sao Tome and Principe airline offers four weekly flights be- tween the two islands on a 50 minute-flight. If you want to go by boat you can choose to the cargo vessels, which take eight hours, with uncertain schedules and periodicity. The airport moderniza- tion works and the port construction have already ended, so the island is accessible by planes of much greater capacity and by vessels with more regular schedules and dedicated to passengers.

O tempo e as circunstâncias fizeram desta roça um museu rea- lista de uma época que marcou a História dos ter- ritórios que formam hoje a República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe. Reza ainda a História que foi também aqui, na Roça Sundy, que o cientista britânico Arthur Eddington comprovou a teoria da relatividade de Einstein. Deslocou-se expres- samente ao Príncipe para observar o eclipse to- tal do Sol de 29 de Maio de 1919 e fotografar o movimento das estrelas adjacentes (só possível em situação de eclipse, devido à penumbra criada).
