One can only imagine the how Edward must have felt leaving Port Nicholson. Wellington had come a remarkably long way since the day he and his small family had first arrived. What was once a strewn line of shops along a weathered waterfront now had transformed into booming metropolis. A family had been raised in this burgeoning city, a generation who were to identify themselves as New Zealanders. Once back in England Edward moved in with his sisters at the family house in Lagarie, Cheltenham. He only returned to Wellington on one occasion, in 1904. When Edward Pearce retired to England he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Mortgage & Agency Co. of N.Z. Ltd. He made one more visit to New Zealand, this was in 1904, when February of that year he took his place for the last time at a meeting of Directors of Levin & Co. 93 Edward Pearce sitting with his sisters outside their home Lagarie in Cheltenham. 195

Whatever drove this remarkable Scotsman to excel in everything he undertook in New Zealand, while maintaining such a large family, is unimaginable. He had at all times given ready and able assistance to enterprises and movements with the object of advancing the colony. He had exerted an influence on the mercantile growth of Wellington, the benefits of which would be difficult to over-estimate. On October 1922 came the news of the death of Edward Pearce; with more piety than precision, The Wellington Club committee minuted its sorrow at losing ‘the last surviving member among the founders of this club. In making this record, members of the committee recalling tradition and experience express their sincere admiration of the career of the one who at all times commanded the admiration and respect of his fellow members. Edward lived out his retirement with his sisters at Lagarie, Cheltenham. It is interesting to note his youngest sister of all, Christina, is buried along side Edward. 201
N.Z. TIMES 16 OCT 1922 OBITUARY Mr Edward Pearce A cable message has been received announcing the death at Chelthenham, England, of Mr Edward Pearce, in his 90th year. The late Mr Edward Pearce, who has resided in England for some time past, was for many years one of the most prominent citizens of Wellington, being especially well known in commercial circles. Mr Edward Pearce came to New Zealand in 1861. For over a quarter of a century he was in business as a merchant on his own account. In 1889, Mr Pearce and Messrs Levin and Co., seeing the many advantages to be gained by amalgamation, joined their firms. The partners were Mr W. H. Levin, Mr Edward Pearce, and Mr John Duncan. By the death of Mr W. H. Levin, in 1893, Mr Pearce became senior partner. In the old provincial days Mr Pearce was a member of the Provincial Executive during Dr. Featherston’s Administration, and in 1870 he was elected to represent the city in Parliament, which position he retained for about eight years. When the Wellington Harbour Board was constituted, Mr Pearce was one of its first members. As a member, and sometimes as chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr Pearce exerted an important influence upon the mercantile growth of Wellington. In the Chamber of Commerce, too, he did conspicuous work, both as a member and as chairman. For many years he was the local director of the National Bank, and for a time chairman of the New Zealand Directors of the National Mutual Life Assurance Association. For many years he commanded the New Zealand Regiment of Artillery, whose twelve batteries were distributed throughout the Dominion. In the connection, as in all other, he was highly esteemed. The late Mr Edward Pearce leaves three sons and two daughters to morn their loss, namely, Messrs George F. Pearce (managing director Levin and Co., Ltd.), Charles Pearce, and W. S. Pearce, also connected with the firm of Levin and Co., Mr Campbell Pearce, of Featherston; and two daughters, viz., Mrs E. R. Dowell, now residing in England, and Mrs H. D. Crawford, of Wellington. Edward Pearce's will can be found at the Alexander Turnbull Library. 202
